Spring competition

After two weeks, here are the most intriguing battles:

> Backup quarterback: Cole McDonald and Cole Brownholtz were criticized for a lackluster practice on Thursday, but they rebounded with strong outings yesterday when they were deemed “live” and free to be hit.

> Wideouts: Keelan Ewaliko and Ammon Barker have taken the majority of the reps with the No. 1s. But UH has given extensive looks to the young guys (Davine Tullis and Kumoku Noa), newcomer (Marcus Armstrong-Brown), veteran (Isaiah Bernard) and the enigma (Don’Yeh Patterson). Patterson, who had left the program in 2015 because of a family illness, auditioned at cornerback last year. He’s back at wideout, and he made a nice catch yesterday on a throw from … Rolo.

> Offensive tackle: Kingjames Taylor and Matt Norman are getting a lot of work — Taylor on the left side, Norman on the right — in the early competition to succeed right tackle RJ Hollis. If anything, the versatility in players at multiple positions will help in case of injuries.

> Defensive line: Zeno Choi and Viane Moala have been held out of contact drills. This is Ka‘aumoana Gifford’s chance to make an impact.

> Linebacker: Somehow Dany Mulanga and Russell Williams Jr. fell out of the rotation last year. But they’re back getting extensive playing time this spring — and delivering some of the biggest hits.

> Safeties: UH has a nice problem with Trayvon Henderson (who is being held out of contact drills this spring), Daniel Lewis and Keala Santiago all having starting experience. Kalen Hicks, who is recovering from a knee injury, should be ready for training camp.

> Kickers: The Warriors did not add a kicker this spring, leaving Alex Trifonivitch as the lone placekicker. The Warriors are expected to add another one this summer. For now, Trifonovitch, who is consistent from up to 50 yards, has a nice head start.

How is Kala performing? Seemed to make some strides last season. His toughness in high school reminded me of Greg Salas.

    #3 PJ2……now that is a great question.

My (wildly speculative and completely uninformed) guess:

He comes back for fall camp (assuming he enrolls at UH for fall semester). Otherwise why would a massively talented football player not have transferred to another school already (even FCS so as not to sit out a year)? So that’s my speculation and my hope. But I am sure others have information that is informed. My speculations are not. I am just being logical.

It would be such a waste if KT does not play again somewhere. What he did was wrong and deserved consequences. He has paid the price for his mistakes.

How Kalakaua Timoteo doing? I haven’t heard much about him lately. Hope he gets in the rotation.

So yes, what happened to Devan Stubblefield?
    Google only gives me this:
2015 (Freshman): Appeared in 12-of-13 games at wide receiver…started eight games, including the final seven contests on the slate…ranked second on the team in both receptions and yards, making 30 catches for 351 yards…led the team in receiving touchdowns with four…had a breakout game against UC Davis (Sept. 19), reeling in six catches for a career-best 108 yards, including his first career touchdown…also made a career-high eight receptions for 91 yards at Nevada (Oct. 24), becoming the first UH player to record two receiving touchdowns on the year…registered his second 100-yard game with 101 yards on three catches against San José State, including grabbing a deflected pass and racing a career-long77 yards for the third-quarter score.
Sounds like an all American candidate to me…

    Tsigh.
    From ST’s 02/19/17 story:
Wideouts Devan Stubblefield and Kalakaua Timoteo, safeties Daniel Lewis, Trayvon Henderson and Kalen Hicks, and defensive linemen Max Hendrie and Zeno Choi are among the players who are recovering from injuries and will not be involved in contact drills this spring. They are expected to be ready for training camp.

J R Hensley. He is backed up by Alesana Sunia.
