Special duty

The Warriors closed today’s practice, presumably to work on some special-team strategies.

Alex Trifonovitch, who was recruited as a punter, is the lone placekicker on the spring roster. Stephen Yaffe, who was on the fall roster, departed before the start of the spring semester. The Warriors expect to add at least one more kicker this summer. There were no candidates at a planned walk-on tryout last month. That tryout was limited only to players already enrolled at UH.

Stan Gaudion, a multi-skilled athlete, and Trifonovitch will compete for the punter’s job. Gaudion was initially expected to delay enrolling at UH until this past January. But he joined during UH’s trip to Australia to have a one-season apprenticeship under kicker/punter Rigo Sanchez.

Stephen – How has the kicking and punting looked this Spring?

With his success at UH and contacts in Cali, maybe Sanchez can steer another P/PK to enroll at UH this summer.

The PK position is a very serious concern at this juncture…Trifonovitch doesn’t impress me with his leg strength. I think Gaudion will be “serviceable” as a punter, but we need a PK who can get touchbacks on his kick-offs and is accurate within 50 yards. I’d be surprised if we find one over the summer, but then again, that’s how we found Rigo.

Hey A-Okole, I like that coach’s on-side always kick strategy.
Also his intentional laterals (Rugby style). Hope Rolo watched
that video, too. I often wondered what happened to the Hook
and Lateral. Probably those who are out to destroy the enjoyment
of football in America snuck into the NCCA and outlawed it as
well as allowing teams to call for a fair catch on kickoffs…

As CoachParcells say about a draft prospect with some red flags, it’s May Day in Moscow. You can say that about getting the right placekicker. Rolo has to get an accurate kicker, it’s imperative. You are talking about maybe a difference of 3 games, maybe 4 that decides a kick winning or losing a game and that could mean a successful season or not.

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Evening!

off topic….just finished watching the WBC Championship game. USA v Puerto Rico…USA 8-0 Victory!
    M. Stroman, 6 innings of no hit shut out baseball. but…..the thing that gave me some chicken skin, after some of the USA team went around the stadium with our flag, the Puerto Rico team was still on the field giving the USA team an ovation. Many of them play major league baseball and they stood there for their team mates. Classy group of guys!

Rigoberto Sanchez is listed as the fourth best place-kicking prospect by CBSsports.com.

    As a punter, unranked.

Benjy Taylor versus Jamie Dixon is still a possibility.

Do you think Pittsburgh misses Dixon?

If the program goes into decline, they’re going to miss those early NCAA exits.

What kind of message are you sending to your bullpen?

I don’t trust you with a four run lead going into the ninth.

It’s more important that Patrick Martin pitches well against Big West foes than help open the floodgates in a non-conference game. If Hawaii was facing Oregon, sure, leave Hornung in.

San Jose State’s night is what Hawaii’s offense looked like since their last post-season appearance.

    Scattered singles.

I like having Fitchett and Poulssen at the bottom of the order.

This is what Coach Coolen would do. Putting a Shara Kleibenstein in the nine hole.

The Fitchett double gave me goosebumps.

This team can hit a little.
