Should he play?

For Saturday’s Football Family Festivis — the annual spring fling — Nick Rolovich is considering suiting up and playing quarterback for a series in the full-contact scrimmage.

Should he?

100% yes Rolo should play…I would love to see that…

  2. SteveM March 14, 2017 12:50 pm

    Rolo should not play.
…but I would like to see it. 😉

  3. oneseason March 14, 2017 12:52 pm

As tempting as it may be for him to play, I would like to not have to worry about the coach leaving the game on a stretcher. Youth has it’s perks. Age has it’s perks. Best not tempt fate with a full contact event.

  4. Whitey March 14, 2017 12:54 pm

No,ego trip is not needed The warriors need a team, not someone to make them have doubts about their efforts and hard work. Are the warrior qbs that bad??

  5. Bowwar March 14, 2017 1:00 pm

No Red jersey if he does…Not a good reflection on his confidence with his QB corps

  6. Andrew March 14, 2017 1:03 pm

Only if it was part of an exhibition non contact part of the event. If thats case why not have some of the other coaches/ grad assistants go in as well.

  7. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2017 1:13 pm

Hmmm. Maybe it’s confidence in his receivers?

  8. Abunai March 14, 2017 1:33 pm

Maybe he’ll dance like Dabo Swinney did for Clemson….

  9. kaleo March 14, 2017 1:34 pm

Agree- its his ego that tripping. Rolo has done a lot of amazing things to turn this around, but be aware of the fine lines . . .

  10. kama krab March 14, 2017 1:47 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Ho easy gangie on all the hostility. I highly doubt this has anything to do with ego trip or lack of confidence in the QB Corps.

If you guys have been opening your eyes to the Rolo way, this is just another one of his ideas to promote his team and for me, I would say go for it braddah. Yes, he’s close to forty but I’m sure braddah still got some shimmy and shake. He definitely still get one arm.

I mean shucks I did the same thing when I was coaching both baseball and football. It’s actually a really good bonding exercise with the boys cause it makes you more believable and the kids trust in you that much more.

    Rolo would go.

Video please! It will go viral!
    ESPN…

  12. Arcumfortis March 14, 2017 2:00 pm

Terrible idea. Can’t believe it is a serious consideration. If he goes in and he’s good it distracts from his players. If he goes in and he’s terrible it distracts from his players. It’s like someone’s father taking the dance floor at a 21st birthday party.

  13. Ron March 14, 2017 2:08 pm

    Bad idea, no up side!

  14. Manoa Mist March 14, 2017 2:24 pm

Uh, no. I agree with Andrew, maybe a skills contest separate from the scrimmage. I love that Rolo thinks outside of the box, but no, him getting in there is not a good idea. Are our quarterbacks that bad that an old geezer has to get in there and show them how its done? Unless Rolo is lifting with the players, running with the players, dieting like the player, sacrificing like the players, then, uh, no, bad idea.

  15. H-Man March 14, 2017 2:24 pm

No. By playing, he makes a mockery of a serious scrimmage.

  16. SteveM March 14, 2017 2:32 pm

Hey kama krab — long time! I just sent an email to your yahoo account. If you don’t receive it or have changed your email addy in the last few years, please send me your new one.

  17. sfogate March 14, 2017 2:33 pm

Why not, but only if his side is made up of old time players/former scout team players and the other side is the current players. Play a few downs flag football style.
I think both sides would enjoy it, along with those on the sidelines watching.

  18. kama krab March 14, 2017 2:54 pm

Howzit braddah SteveM. Looooong time no see. Hows you and Peaches doing.
Anyway, yep same email addy. Got your email and going check um out when I get home. Miss seeing all the ole tymas. Hope all is well.

  19. Mytake March 14, 2017 3:41 pm

Suit him up. He needs a lesson in aging. His brain is saying he can still do it but his body will give him a reality check. If I was a D player I would drill him with 100% to tell him u can coach but u can’t play anymore.

  20. Sangamon Keith March 14, 2017 4:03 pm

Would love to see him play … but spring game is about developing the players. If the coaches think the players won’t gain much from game, then sure.

  21. Old School Dave March 14, 2017 4:32 pm

NO! Bad Idea! He going get HURT!!

I’ve seen too many guys in their 30s & 40s who’ve blown out an ACL or Achilles Tendon, just because they thought they could still “hang” with the young guys.

  22. Warrior Fan March 14, 2017 4:38 pm

No. He should continue to focus on being the best HC he can be. Motivate and get the best out of each player that steps on the field. Go Warriors!

  23. islandman March 14, 2017 5:04 pm

Flag football maybe like 16. said. But coach Wade tried to arm wrestle with one of his vb players about two years ago and came out with a broken arm. Now he walks his dog the last i heard, which is better.

  24. jm2375 March 14, 2017 5:20 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

I’d like to see Rolo challenge his QBs to a skills challenge, but not take part in the scrimmage.

#22 – Wade broke his arm moving furniture in his house.

  25. Ipu Man March 14, 2017 5:31 pm

    Yes and No…
Yes, if they all suit up in those bubbles. 🙂
No, if real game situation. Give him pom-poms.
And he can be the cheer leader.

  26. pakipark March 14, 2017 5:44 pm

No, Coach Nick should not play..But, Shawn Withey-Allen still looks like he got some game.

  27. Derek March 14, 2017 6:32 pm

No. Who do you think he is, Tom Brady???

  28. joseph fukushima March 14, 2017 7:06 pm

Only if the D line coach can suit up. Show Rolo what real D men are.

  29. 808warriorfan March 14, 2017 7:16 pm

“ROCK & ROLO” … YEAH BABY … JUST DO IT !!!!!

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  30. amela March 14, 2017 7:33 pm

He’s kidding of course. I can see him getting some leg injuries or even a concussion.

  31. burro sabio March 14, 2017 8:05 pm

For those who keep wondering why Rolo doesn’t recruit this kid or that kid.

    http://footballscoop.com/news/12-recruiting-red-flags-according-college-coaches-across-country/

  32. Ajoe March 14, 2017 8:34 pm

No. Nothing good comes out of it. Let the kids play. Its their day.

  33. RoyGBivs March 14, 2017 8:48 pm

    Yes. Play’um. Just a series.

If everyone else is live, wat gives if you can’t hit the QB’s!?!
It’s one position out of 23+ and those positions have backups too.

You wanna find out who could make plays under game-like conditions, so be a better ball club and find out.

  34. oldtimer808 March 14, 2017 9:19 pm

Coaches coach and players play. You had your time Rolo now it’s your time to be a coach and coach up your players.

  35. HawaiiMongoose March 14, 2017 10:35 pm

I’m with Andrew and Manoa Mist. It would be fun to see Rolo participate in a skills contest with the team’s QBs, for example throwing long balls at a target down the field. But in live action during the scrimmage… not the best idea. Too many bad things can happen.

  36. RoyGBivs March 14, 2017 11:27 pm

    GOSH. I’M OLD!!!

Pardon my rant #33 – didn’t read it well – gotta go back to school.

Rolo do wah Rolo wants to do…..

  37. z March 15, 2017 12:39 am

Heard on radio that there is a huge gap between Brown and the other quarterbacks. Coach needs to fix that. Heard something about fumbling?

  38. Maddog50 March 15, 2017 4:36 am

Don’t have an opinion on Coach playing or not-Guess I would use the same thing I did in business-What are you trying to do? Is this the best way? What are pluses and minuses? What is a better alternative……..must be trying to accomplish something so is this the vehicle to that end-GoWarriors!!!!

  39. Maddog50 March 15, 2017 4:41 am

Nice article on Ryan Tuiasoa today….pertaining to my post a few days ago here is a young man making strides to contributing and making an impact, looking for more of this feel good stuff—Go gettem Ryan!!!!

  40. boolakanaka March 15, 2017 7:12 am

This reminds me of the story of Mike Akiu, who was removed from the NFL about 8-9 years, in his 30s, working at the UH athlete extension program, e.g. stevedore, and he heard that scouts were in town for recently graduated free agents. I think this was circa 95 or 96–anywho, Mike thought it would be fun to see if he still had some wheels.

Story goes, he cracked two low 4.4s in a row–in the 4.42 range, and despite his age and not having played since the late 80s, was offered an invite to two training camps. Lesson here???? You can never buy speed……

  41. A-House March 15, 2017 7:56 am

    Hi Kama Crab:

with all due respect, Rolo should not participate in any organinzed scrimmage

if he does well, I would feel poorly as a QB; if he does poorly, just makes a fool of himself

if QBs are not progressing as Rolo feels they should, I agree with Maddog50 line of reasoning – what’s wrong? consider/list all alternatives to correct? select best and proceed to implement

who is the UH QB coach?

  42. islandman March 15, 2017 7:57 am

Rolo said on Bobby’s show today, he probably won’t be playing in the scrimmage. Good, Charlie broke his arm a year ago moving furniture only. But Bobby said Rolo hit two HR’s in a softball game the other day.
McDonald is currently separating himself from the other Cole, per the coach.
Brian Smith said on Sports Animals that Mel Davis had to have surgery but is doing well in school.
Gov Ige will the coach of one of the scrimmage teams, per newspaper article.

  43. tommui March 15, 2017 8:18 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Be interesting if Rolo did play but I wouldn’t advise it!
