D-lineman to Warriors

Anthony Mermea, a defensive lineman from Vista Murrieta High, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors.

He was one of seven to visit the Warriors the past weekend.

He said he is 6-3, 305 pounds, and capable of running 40 yards in 5.1 seconds. He will compete at nose or 3-technique for the Warriors.

“I decided to go where it’s more like home, and Hawaii is like home,” Mermea said. “Anywhere I go, I’m going to be away from home. I’m going to have to deal with that. I’m going to have to grow up. I feel Hawaii has the closest tight-knit group, and the players buy in.”

As a famous man once noted: Your actions become your habits.

The second day of the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program was as demanding as the first. It’s 33 days away from the opening of spring training.

Great pics. Mahalo Stephen! Way to work, guys!!

Talk about a decimated program. EWU has now lost its head coach and WRs coach to Cal and its OC and RBs coach to Utah. Remains to be seen if these coaches can continue to have the success they had at the I-AA/FCS level.

They don’t give salt tablets anymore, like they use to back in the day. Blah, can still taste den buggahs!

Train hard, but hope none of our guys have to go through what three players did at U of Oregon. That was shameful, especially for a big time PAC 12 program where they have the best equipment and facilities. Sounds like they put winning ahead of players’ health and well being.

Hmm…noticed in the first picture that all the players are shoeless. Any reason for that? Mo betta put da shoes on in case somebody drop the barbell on your da feet.

#7 … “H-Man” … totally agree w/ you … If I were new Coach Taggart I’d ban these idiots, who have way too much time on their hands by blasting their teammates on Social Media, from posting stupid remarks like these … seems like they have degrees in Medicine in Undergrad School … at the end of the day the S & C Coach should have been able to, if he was qualified, to recognize the distress these players were in …..

Not liking it that Taufa’asau’s dad says that, “It’s just a verbal commitment”…..

#18 Times have changed. Giving someone your word does not carry the same weight of honor once did.

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid January 19, 2017 8:14 am

As a former undersized O-lineman and a now full figured Warrior fan, I love to see us getting big guys. Especially guys like Anthony! He’s big boy with a motor.

al – She wouldn’t have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam) !

  22. kahuna January 19, 2017 8:53 am

Rolo needs to find out if the dad is the meddling type. If he is….maybe its time to move on. It will be difficult to communicate one on one with the young man and find out about him if the dad always there speaking for him. If the dad is going to be the decision maker then Rolo going get an earful if things don’t go as planned.

If the kid make the decsion then its on the kid……that the way it should be. Meddling fathers does not always make the best decision for their kids.

    #19:
Sounds exactly like something a rival Coach would say to a recruit that had already given a verbal commit to another school.

  24. Andrew January 19, 2017 9:55 am

    20
Indeed. It’s funny how it’s the same with coaches too. And the very ones that go against their word are the ones that get upset at the student athletes when they do the same.

    22
Yeah it seems that there is a difference of opinion within the family on where he should/wants to go.

  25. mileHIwarrior January 19, 2017 10:26 am

The way I see this going is, if Wazzu offers during his visit, he’ll probably decommit from UH and take their offer.

  26. ai-eee-soos January 19, 2017 10:45 am

On another board, DL coach Joe Salavea who recruited Samoa, has left wazzu for Oregon. The post added this bit from a wazzu source:

Head coach Mike Leach and other members of the WSU staff felt that football players were being targeted by the Pullman police, making it harder to sell Salave’a’s vision of Pullman as a safe place for American Samoan football players to study and play the game.

I hope the Taufa’asau’s are aware of this situation.

  27. Stephen Tsai January 19, 2017 11:33 am

Taufa‘asau is not going to Washington State.
