School in session for Warrior freshmen

Today is the first day of college for 14 first-year Warriors.

They are enrolled in UH’s so-called “bridge” program — two three-credit classes that will enable the newcomers to acclimate to college life and earn a jump start in accumulating credits toward a degree.

Many of the other newcomers are enrolled in Summer Session II, which begins July 5.

Leo Koloamatangi is an example of a player benefitting from the bridge program and the ensuing summer sessions. Koloamatangi, who exited spring training as the No. 1 left guard, earned his bachelor’s degree in May, completing the work in four years.

do you have a list of players enrolled in the bridge session?

  2. Bryson June 27, 2016 8:15 am

Why the lack of coverage for the Hawaii staff who were apart of yesterday’s camp? From the article it seemed like only Michigan was involved

  3. NorthShoreFan June 27, 2016 9:00 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
The first step for our Student/Athlete Warriors. Hit the books like you going hit the ball carrier! This is what the program is all about. You represent your family off and on the field…..LIVE ALOHA….PLAY WARRIOR!

  4. H-Man June 27, 2016 11:45 am

Shucks, DE/OLB Demarco Artis (Florida) visited Hawaii; said he liked the campus and the coaching staff, then committed to Kentucky.

  5. A-House June 27, 2016 11:50 am

like so many others before and more after — kid took UH for a ride – a free ride to see Hawaii with little or no intention of making a commitment

  6. A-House June 27, 2016 12:01 pm

it’s a “crap” shoot hoping for an uninterrupted 6 hour and 45 minutes run at the table

    IMHO, it will neva hoppen

but, is there a hope that the next $3 will win you the mega buck or a mega, mega “lottery” — yep, just a hope blowing in the wind

I play the lottery to collect the tickets as a souvenir on trips taking me to states that allow the lottery – chance of winning – absolutely slim to NONE!!!!!!

  7. Paki Parker June 27, 2016 12:43 pm

Looks like Kennedy will not be playing for UH anymore per Andrew Lee the photographer on his Instagram

  8. DaveLetterMan June 27, 2016 12:44 pm

    Good day, Tsaikos!
    Josh Pacheco tweeted:
Sources tell @KITV4 that University of Hawaii will “permanently suspend” DL Kennedy Tulimaseali’i.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid June 27, 2016 12:46 pm

    Go scholars! Go athletes!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  10. DaveLetterMan June 27, 2016 12:52 pm

Now SA reporting that KT dismissed from team.
Best wishes to KT. Hope he gets anger mgt help and learns from this.

  11. What??? June 27, 2016 1:14 pm

NFL Supplemental draft is in a few weeks.

  12. Warrior Dave June 27, 2016 1:15 pm

Hope Kennedy can apply for reinstatement next year. I know he can appeal the initial decision.

Not sure what he’s feeling right now. Maybe he doesn’t want to play and just move on in life. Good luck in whatever you decide Kennedy.

  13. Boolakanaka June 27, 2016 1:16 pm

I was actually in the original bridge program–that is to say, I bridged going to school in 80s to almost the 90s. I get a call from both Schumaker (the athletic academic advisor) and the Deans office, something to this effect” hey, can you just graduate already, you have over 180 credits???!”

Seriously, congrats to our new guys!!

  14. Rodney June 27, 2016 1:28 pm

    What are KT opitions?
    Transfer?
    Enter pro s?

  15. 3-Prong June 27, 2016 1:57 pm

    ….and expelled. Too bad.

  16. Boolakanaka June 27, 2016 2:10 pm

Hmmmn, KT, has a pretty hard lesson handed to him very early in life. Let’s regroup, retool and become better from this….Does anyone know if he could play for a D3 program right away (this fall), assuming he can make a transfer, to say someplace like Linfield.

  17. SteveM June 27, 2016 2:36 pm

from ST’s story in the Star-Advertiser…
“We hope that Kennedy will continue his college education and work toward receiving his degree. He will always be a part of the Rainbow Warrior ʻohana and we hope that his recent troubles do not define his life,” Matlin said.

    Well said.
Good luck and best wishes for Kennedy Tulimasealii moving forward!

  18. What??? June 27, 2016 3:29 pm

Where does it say he’s expelled?

  19. Arcumfortis June 27, 2016 3:54 pm

I have very mixed feelings about Kennedy being dismissed from the team. Not knowing the backstory or developments since the allegations were made it’s hard to come down firmly on a position. But my preference would be that the team does not abandon the player unless absolutely necessary. I would much prefer to see a way of remediation developed for Kennedy. There is nothing good about what he did. But this move seems a little too rigid and dogmatic for my liking. I would prefer that he be given an opportunity to reestablish his status as a player in good standing. Even if this meant sitting out a year to demonstrate an enduring pattern of behavior that was consistent with the expectations of a student athlete at the University of Hawaii. But again I don’t know the backstory and probably never will. For now I just feel bad for the young man and wish him well. I hope he learns from this and points his life in a productive direction.

Very well put. One is never to old or young to learn. I believe giving KT a second chance will pay huge dividends in his life and as a Warrior.

    Good news for a change:

  22. kev-1 June 27, 2016 4:28 pm

Wow. I’m not sure how I feel about UH dismissing KT from the team. Why would they have waited so long to do it? I am 100% behind a no tolerance rule for domestic violence, but that’s not what’s happening here. According to the code, no contest to a felony is the breaking point. The irony here is that the felony charge is for punching the dashboard an breaking equipment. The abuse charges were only misdemeanors. Strange world.

  23. Ron June 27, 2016 4:35 pm

Arcumfortis and DPK said it all. Let society and the Courts decide his fate and let the School and Team provide the support a young person needs grow and mature into a productive citizen. One year with Rollo and his staff would be worth a thousand counseling sessions.

  24. H-Man June 27, 2016 4:38 pm

Other good news; re Wahine VB Nikki Taylor…”The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team announced that Rainbow Wahine senior opposite Nikki Taylor has been selected as one of 12 athletes who will compete in the 2016 Pan American Cup scheduled to take place July 2-10 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.”

  25. Haleakala June 27, 2016 4:38 pm

Cole Brownholtz – He looks like a good one at qb.

How many quarterbacks has Rolovich recruited?

  26. Ipu Man June 27, 2016 5:21 pm

    God help KT.
    Rejected by his girlfriend.
    Rejected by his school.
Going to be hard to find a new girl friend…
    and job.

  27. Old School Dave June 27, 2016 5:53 pm

Kennedy has a redshirt year. Perhaps, a change of scenery would be a good thing for him (transfer to another school). Just thinking of what could benefit him down the road. Would love for him to be allowed back on the UH team after he proves himself worthy of a second change, but sometimes change and a new start can be a good thing, too. Best of luck to him, and I hope that the coaching staff is helping him get the help he needs, regardless. Definite life lesson.

  28. st. anthony trojan June 27, 2016 6:33 pm

me just wonder if there was a earthquake there at the quarry ?

“UH Athletics….. Summer Sports Camps For July & August”

    got this e mail…the subject line has changed…good job…

hope there is more changes on the way…

KT….is sad… but the man gave n left blood sweat n tears on the field for his school….I not think they should discard him…because he needs all the help he can get now…if appeal is available…then it should be tried after his case… n maybe like sum say…red-shirt n be accepted back with open arms by team mates, coaches n admin….

the school should not let him out to dry…hope there is sum behind the scenes work going on to get him reinstated… the correct way…this seems like the first step of that process…if the judge goes light on him n ask him to keep his nose clean… then the school should do so also with his appeal…what u think ??

    GO…GO… S & M…

  29. BigFan June 27, 2016 6:42 pm

Yeah, I echo Arcum’s comments. Maybe the student code needs clarifying or some changes.
    Wish KT the best.

  30. 3-Prong June 27, 2016 6:47 pm

“Any student-athlete convicted of or pleading guilty or no contest to a felony charge shall be permanently dismissed from the team.”

Did Green know that the Code of Conduct was so black and white? Kennedy did not have a chance because it was a felony and because he plead no contest. While that was probably the proper thing to do, if he wanted any chance at playing he should have fought it.

Boo: Genius! Linfield will take him!!! Go Cats.

  31. Boolakanaka June 27, 2016 7:00 pm

3 Prong, I was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe, get out of the limelight for a bit, get back to the joy of the game, plenty local bruddhas to support you, and still he will have ample scouts see him play in another D3 final.

I think you need to make a call….wink.

  32. burro sabio June 27, 2016 7:13 pm

3-prong, Kennedy and his attorney made the right call. The first priority is to clear his criminal record since later in life a felony conviction may disqualify him from certain employment. Secondly, he is eligible to play right away at over 100 FCS schools, he just has to find one that is willing to take him.

  33. 3-Prong June 27, 2016 7:23 pm

burro: Good point about the long term implications. Judge to rule in August about the deferral?

Eh Akamai, tell your boy to call the coach!

  34. HawaiiMongoose June 27, 2016 8:40 pm

I doubt Kennedy’s football career is over. I haven’t heard of any academic issues that would prevent him from transferring to play elsewhere. If he can get the charges deferred and eventually expunged and stays out of further trouble I expect he’ll find an FCS school or possibly even an FBS school willing to take a chance on him.

  35. oneseason June 27, 2016 9:28 pm

I don’t have the impression that Coach Rolo or AD Matlin acted rashly. I like that they didn’t do a lot of talking before making the decision public. It’s just very unfortunate for Mr. Tulimasealii.

  36. Hodad June 27, 2016 9:47 pm

Rolo and Matlin didn’t have a choice. It’s a rule. Plead guilty or no contest to a felony charge, you are gone. That’s the way it should be. He’ll never be back. BT W, he can never play for a SEC school because they recently passed a rule that you can’t accept a transfer who was kicked out because of a disciplinary issue. Doesn’t matter if it’s a felony or not or if you are later found not guilty in court.

  37. papaya June 28, 2016 5:09 am

Going by the “book”. Student conduct code needs a review or……Here comes another lawsuit UH will lose.

  38. OKC Painting June 28, 2016 5:59 am

Very exciting that these kids are starting their freshmen year!

  39. oneseason June 28, 2016 6:28 am

#37 … They did have the option of acting rashly earlier. And they may have had the option of deferring this until latter (per Mr. Green). Interpretation of the law seems pretty broad (at least if you have money and/or power) and not necessarily straight forward … consider the former Virginia Governor and the recent US Supreme Court decision regarding his conviction. http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/dismissed-warriors-drop-tulimasealii/

  40. NorthShoreFan June 28, 2016 7:58 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

UH has always been an institution that shoots it’s self in the foot. Whether it be construction projects or contracts for its employees. I get tired to hearing these problems almost weekly. This is supposed to be an institution of higher learning, I think.
Does KT deserve punishment? Yes. Does the punishment fit the crime, No. I’m really hopeful that KT can get back on track and get his palapala. Whether it be from UH or another institution. If he makes the NFL, it won’t be under the UH banner.
KT…focus and get things on track. You worked too hard to let this issue derail your dreams….IMUA!

  41. John Rambo June 28, 2016 8:29 am

let’s not sugarcoat it. Kennedy has a pretty decently sized rap sheet and it’s my understanding that he got his felony conviction AFTER the arrests for domestic violence while suspended from the team. The man has some serious issues going on that is deeper than football. Much respect to Rolo and the UH administration for enforcing behavioral guidelines and promoting a culture of discipline and doing the right thing. It’s no longer about the individual player but the team as a whole.

Best of luck to KT in the future. Hopefully he figures out what he needs to figure out to turn his life around.

  42. islandman June 28, 2016 8:47 am

    40. … The felony incident occurred before the first arrest.
” The criminal property damage charge stems from an incident that happened in March, before his first arrest, that was apparently just reported. HPD says Tulimasealii turned himself in and was booked just after 6 p.m.”
    http://khon2.com/2016/04/26/uh-football-star-arrested-again-accused-of-criminal-property-damage/

  43. WWF June 28, 2016 9:14 am

The criminal property damage incident, which was the felony charge, apparently happened in March, but was not reported until after his first arrest the following month?

Arrested for domestic abuse charges, with his ex-girlfriend exhibiting scratches from abuse from a 6′-1″ 285 pound DL? Scratches?
