Rolo wants answers

Yesterday, the blog requested questions about the Warriors. (The answers to many of the questions will be printed in tomorrow’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser.)

Nick Rolovich was helpful in provide answers. But, he added, “If they’re going to ask me, I’m going to ask them.”

So, Rolovich wants to know:

> “How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?”

> “Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?”

> “How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?”

> The NCAA allows UH to watch each high school team play only one game in the fall. Rolovich asked: “What’s the best strategy?” Do you attend games during UH’s bye week or do you wait for the playoffs (but risk missing a team that does not qualify for the postseason)?

    Pomai Hawaii 43 – Michigan 42

  2. haka August 30, 2016 10:52 am

I go to the games because Hawaii is my team…PERIOD!!!
    Go Warriors!
    ALWAYS!!!

  3. haka August 30, 2016 10:54 am

    Love the onside kick!
It would have worked if it was a little softer and a little more to the right. 🙂

  4. BigWave96744 August 30, 2016 10:55 am

“How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?” — Nah if it worked he is a genius.

“Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?” — Nah, the Green helmets are unique… But bring back the helmet stickers like when Coach played

“How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?” — Offense looks like it has the potential to light up the score board. Might be like the 2001 year when we scored just enough win massive shootouts

  5. haka August 30, 2016 10:57 am

    Thumbs neutral.
They are alright, but didn’t shock and awe!
    Go Warriors!

  6. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 30, 2016 10:58 am

Will we try a trick play where Woolsey looks to his Left against Michigan?

    1) Fired no. Withholding food and water for a day, yes.
    2) <3 the helmets.
    3) I can't be counted as part of the "more" since I'll never give up my season tickets.

  10. BigWave96744 August 30, 2016 11:07 am

BTW, anyone know if they did the Haka in front of the Aussies? If so the fans must have loved it

  11. Sangamon Keith August 30, 2016 11:08 am

    (1) Because I wouldn’t have done it … it was exactly the time to do it! Good call.

    (2) White helmets are the team’s decision … I love the dark green helmets and dark uniforms, but I’m not the team. You guys get to decide.

    (3) If I lived in Hawaii, I would be at every game. I live in Illinois and called a buddy who has extra tickets for the San Diego State game … good chance I’ll fly out to see the game! Also looking at San Jose State game … but I’m not made of money. My message … you’re on the right track!

  13. Down with... August 30, 2016 11:18 am

    Rolo…
-the onside was great, except we didn’t get it. But no hating for that…good try
-white helmets were nice. All Blacks much better (to me)
-I’m a season ticket holder…we always go…rain shine, win-lose-blow outs-Chow-Von Appon. But we really appreciate the effort shown this past weekend although stupid mistakes may have cost us a closer game. Clean it up, don’t get hurt this weekend and we should be good for conference play. Go Rolo and Go Warriros!!!

  14. Andrew August 30, 2016 11:20 am

    1. Was a good call with a not so good result. I liked the aggressiveness showing that the team is there to win.
    2. thumbs up
    3. I will be there regardless of result

  15. UH Fan For Life August 30, 2016 11:21 am

    (1) it was a gutsy call – keep ’em guessing! next time try da Muddle Huddle
    (2) I prefer the dark green helmets, but support whatever coach Rolo and the team likes best.
    (3) already got my season tickets with my wife and daughter (next generation of UH fans) and am joining my sister, brother-in-law and their son who also got their season tickets. My daughter and son are in the UH band, so most of our ohana will be cheering the bows to victory at Aloha Stadium.
Also respect Rolo’s disciplinary decisions – if the players want to be treated and trusted as adults, those who violate the rules need to accept the consequences of their actions.
    Go Bows!

  16. Bkhano August 30, 2016 11:22 am

    1) big olos with the on side I like

    2) white black green just no rainbows imho only for throw back games rainbows don’t put fear in our opponents eyes

    3) I’ll be there as long as I’m not at work 4 of 6 home games #Boom

  17. J-Dog August 30, 2016 11:23 am

    (1) I thought what better way to catch someone on an onside kick by doing it on the absolute first play of the college football season

    (2) White helmets look good. Hope the black jerseys make more appearances, and please let’s at least include the player’s last names on the black jerseys.

    (3) The team’s performance last Saturday was enough to validate my decision to get season tickets after the last 4 boooring years of Chow ball. Finally the offense looks watchable again. I don’t buy tickets to watch our punter (although Harding made watching punts interesting)

  18. FatJeff August 30, 2016 11:29 am

    1) No problem on the onside kick, be unpredictable (BTW did the field conditions effect that play? Kicker appeared to slip on the turf on the next kick off).

    2) Thumbs down on the white helmets. Black on Black unis and the dark green helmet! That’s MY kind of retro.

    3) Going on year 30 of seasons tickets, we will be there do or die.

  19. NotNasti August 30, 2016 11:29 am

    1. No.
    2. Thumbs Up
    3. Going anyway.
    4. Use a disguise.

  20. DaveLetterMan August 30, 2016 11:35 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
    > good call. Might’ve worked if the kick bounced a little higher
    > like the white helmets for road games. Green for home.
    > would if my work schedule would allow it
    > bye week. A prospect might be found on a team with a losing record

  21. Wassup? August 30, 2016 11:38 am

#4- Thumbs up on the pride (rock)helmet stickers! Bring um back.

  22. blu808 August 30, 2016 11:42 am

I loved the onside kick. The result wasn’t ideal but it showed what the personality of this team will be.

Thumbs up on the white helmets but need to bring back the silver.

I would come out to the game because I support our states team regardless.

  23. mileHIwarrior August 30, 2016 11:43 am

“How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?” – Oh heck no! I loved the onside kick. We have nothing to lose and everything to prove. Take chances Coach!

“Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?” – Thumbs up but for away games. Gotta stick with the green for home games.

“How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?” – I go to the games anyway. When the boys come to Colorado of course.

The NCAA allows UH to watch each high school team play only one game in the fall. Rolovich asked: “What’s the best strategy?” Do you attend games during UH’s bye week or do you wait for the playoffs (but risk missing a team that does not qualify for the postseason)? – No matter. Go when you can any time you can.

  24. djmitcho August 30, 2016 11:47 am

I liked the inside attempt. What a way to start the season.

I like the white helmets when they are retro. With the uh rainbow or the old school menhune ones

As far as watching teams you go to the “big” games. Ranked teams vs each other and rivalry games

  25. letsgowarriors August 30, 2016 11:51 am

    1. not fired
    2. thumbs up
    3. hopefully more
    4. use bye week for bubble teams. UH season usually runs longer than HS season anyway, so scheduling might be a conflict once OIAs/states rolls around. we’re on the road every other week.

  26. H-Man August 30, 2016 11:53 am

    1. Onside kick. Great move, just poorly executed. The ball should have been kicked end over end and tumbling. Next time.
    2. I liked the white helmets. Just don’t like all-white. Another blogger said it’s a team decision and it should be. Anyway, who cares what color uniform the team wears as long as they put up Ws.
    3. I am a season ticket holder. But I went out this morning to purchase a single additional ticket for the Massachusetts game. My son is flying in to spend Thanksgiving in Hawaii and to see a Warrior game. He takes crap in the office for putting up Warrior paraphernalia in Duck country.
    4. Wait for postseason playoffs.

  27. Inyoface August 30, 2016 12:00 pm

Onside kick was iffy, the all white’s looked real good I thought, guys played well. I will be at the San Diego game and possibly Fresno and San Jose.

  28. Kazu August 30, 2016 12:09 pm

Not a football fan but that on side kick is one that everyone will remember how you started your first game as Head Coach. It would have worked too, how many people would expect something like that.
White Helmet of course that way you see all the colors of opposing team when they bang heads.
Good luck in Michigan, most of all have fun, and hope nobody gets suspended
    We’ll be watching.

  29. 925Warrior August 30, 2016 12:10 pm

    1) It was a fun play for the start of the game but poorly executed. There should have been a plan as to putting some spin and bounce on the ball and to the sides. Sanchez looked too afraid to dive for the ball. 2) Helmets are cool with little “H’s” on the side for sacks, interceptions, etc. 3) I’d go to the games because its a hell of a lot more exciting than the last four years and more classy than than the prior years. Way to go chief. BTW, hope you get into the QB competition with Harbaugh, that would be cool.

  30. Maddog50 August 30, 2016 12:13 pm

Onside kick fine-you knew the consequences either way-Dare to win! White helmets fine! The other item do what’s right for u and this team and staff. Go Warriors!!!!

  31. jeezy33 August 30, 2016 12:18 pm

    1. Not fired at all, but onside kick probably wasn’t the smartest move. 1st play of the season might be 1 time where an opponent is ready for it. Especially in a game where Cal knew Hawaii would treat like a bowl game pulling off a major upset. Juice was not worth the squeeze. On the other hand, if that means Rolo is going to be extra aggressive all season long, then I’m in. 1 surprise onside kick per game.

    2. White Helmets are fire. keep it.

    3. Season tickets so I’m going to game regardless. But This team at least is exciting to watch on offense. Chow’s offense was so boring that fans couldn’t tolerate watching the team play.

  32. jeezy33 August 30, 2016 12:19 pm

    4. Depends. Attend the game where you can scout a player going up against someone of good competition. No point watching a potential recruit go up against a slouch.

  33. SteveM August 30, 2016 12:22 pm

    My answers to Rolo:

    1) Onside kick inspired me. Kudos for trying.
    2) White helmets for road and “retro” games. Dark green for all others.
    3) A few others perhaps. As a season ticket holder, I’m going.
    4) Do the usual suspects during the playoffs and check out the others during bye week. You should have a clearer picture of which teams are in both categories by the 3rd week in September.

  34. greenthumb August 30, 2016 12:33 pm

    1. Liked the gutsiness of the onside kick and agree with others that if you are showing us you’re not afraid to be unconventional, then it was the way to go.
    2. Bring back the attaboy stickers. Please?
    3. I sure hope attendance numbers go up. (And I hope the stadium gets more fan-friendly; a large part of that is beyond your control, but it needs saying.)
    4. Is it possible to scope out the schedules to the point that you folks can choose to go to the game that’s the most challenging matchup for at least most of the players? I’d think it would be valuable to see in realtime how players adjust to adversity and how they respond to coaching adjustments. By this I mean looking at what their receptiveness is to their coaches, as well as whether they are able to execute in-game adjustments. The second part seems coachable, the first part seems to be more a character and innate ability.

  35. UHAlum72 August 30, 2016 12:34 pm

    I went to all 18 straight losses so why wouldn’t I go….

  36. Bryson August 30, 2016 12:35 pm

How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?” I loved it way to put a stamp on the beginning of the Rolo era

    > “Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?” I liked the White Helmets,Hopefully we can get a matte green or black for a home game

    > “How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?”I was there all through the Chow era,I will definetly be there for the Rolo era

Great Job. To the team just a gotta correct the few miscues and this team will surprise people,Great job to the Coaches for creating a enviroment of bortherhood, alot of players were afraid to say it at the time but I sense alot of them are happy with the coaching change

  37. al August 30, 2016 12:37 pm

I love that “go for broke” mentality of the onside kick. What were the odds that the point man did not automatically peel back for the return. Rigo needed to practice his “fake kick” a bit more. He slowed down a step too soon. So, nah, we”ll keep you around Rolo. Lol

  38. al August 30, 2016 12:38 pm

The all white was cool to see. The helmets are a keeper.

  39. Aaron August 30, 2016 12:39 pm

    1. Loved the onside kick. I feel like win or lose, this season is going to be fun.
    2. White helmets on the road are great. I thought they looked really sharp.
    3. I honestly don’t think the cal game will cause much of a bump in attendance if we don’t exceed expectations against Michigan. The first real opportunity to get people into the stadium is by playing well against Arizona. The bye week will make us lose some momentum, but if we can get a win there we can expect at least 35,000 on 10/1 for Nevada.
    4. Lots of OIA teams will get a chance to play in the state tournaments, so maybe catch the best ILH match-ups you can during the bye week.

  40. al August 30, 2016 12:42 pm

Been going to UH games since I was 8 years old. Not going to stop now. Although last year I did miss 2-3 games.

  41. diamonds808 August 30, 2016 12:43 pm

    1. – not fired – gotta try something different “element of surprise!”
    2. White was ok – maybe too much white with the uniforms.
    3. YES! trying to get to some home games but DEFINITELY going to SDSU game!
    4. go to games as time permits, bye week, etc. my question is: does “watching” each team mean “in person” or can they watch OC sports if they can’t be there live?

  42. UHSportsFan August 30, 2016 12:47 pm

    1. Did/do not want Rolovich fired. Onside kick was a gutsy thing to try. Kudos
    2. Not a fan of the white helmets
    3. I’d go if I could, sadly I don’t live close enough
    4. Read/watch the news and player stats, rack and stack the players against UH needs/highest priorities, then choose the teams to watch at the best time convenient for the scouts concentrating on the highlighted players, but keeping eyes open for any surprise talent

  43. al August 30, 2016 12:48 pm

As much as possible one team at a time vs watching two at once. Focus on the prime targets one school at a time, thus, showing how much “love” for them.
Attend as many “Friday night lights” on the eve of your game to show even more significance.

  44. shadow August 30, 2016 12:55 pm

    1) “How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?”
Not me – “No guts, no glory” (need speedier guys (than Rigo) to get to the ball though)

    2) “Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?”
Hate it – reminds me of practice days & too bland. (White helmet makes your head look big.)

    3) “How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?”
I am going anyway but if we win, (& stop doing frustrating things like fumbling, throwing interceptions, not going thru people on tackles, not throwing catchable balls to guys wide open, not kicking the ball into the endzone to stop kick returns, etc.), guarantee more people will go.

    4) The NCAA allows UH to watch each high school team play only one game in the fall. Rolovich asked: “What’s the best strategy?”
Rely on your “high school coaching network” to hear who should be seen to be believed & go to those games versus a strong opponent – no wait for only bye dates.

    > How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?
ALL OF US, INCLUDING THE AUSSIES

    > Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?
Thumbs up! Would love to see maybe gray helmets with the home jerseys, or at least change the dark green helmets to match the green on the jerseys.

    > How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?
Well, I’ll be at Michigan! But I won’t be at any other games since I can’t go. I’ll definitely go if they make the Hawaii Bowl.

    > The NCAA allows UH to watch each high school team play only one game in the fall. Rolovich asked: “What’s the best strategy?” Do you attend games during UH’s bye week or do you wait for the playoffs (but risk missing a team that does not qualify for the postseason)?
Well, since they extended the playoffs…yeah, wait till the state tournament(s).

  47. sfogate August 30, 2016 1:05 pm

    1. loved the onside kick. great way to start the game.
    2. white helmets look good with the white uniform. hope to see dark green with the home jerseys.
    3. have season tickets

no haka was done. I’ve heard that the team is working on doing a hala(?), a more Hawaiian style chant. personally I like the warrior face the haka gives.

  48. dopaco24 August 30, 2016 1:06 pm

    1: not fired
2: thumbs up. I would like to see a little different design. H logo on the left and the islands on the right side of the helmet. It would look great on the white helmets and maybe even a matte black one. I’m not so sure how well it would look on the green helmets, though.
3: On the mainland currently, but might make a road game if my schedule permits.

  49. Ipu Man August 30, 2016 1:09 pm

No fear onside kick—and no fear BIG schools.
Shock the nation and get “abalone” shell shine helmets…
Too poor to go to games and too old. If younger, no problem.
Scout ALL schools, ALL islands, whenever can.

  50. Markazulu August 30, 2016 1:09 pm

    1. No ways i can live with aggressive play calling sometimes things just dont go your way.
    2. I loved the white helmet but still prefer the ones we been using.
    3. Ive always followed the team no matter what just cant go to games because of work.
    4. Id say look for marquee
match ups. Maybe the schools not getting recognition might have a few hidden gems on them.

    Keep living aloha coach.

  51. Ganiks August 30, 2016 1:11 pm

“How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?”
Reminded me of Nolan Tokuda and the Leilehua Mules Football Team. It says you believe in your Defense, putting them in a tough position. Defense wins championships Coach!

“Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?”
For away games only. Try adding White face masks.

“How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?”
Season ticket holder for 30+ years. We’d be there if you guys lost by 70! Less traffic better for us Faithful!

The NCAA allows UH to watch each high school team play only one game in the fall. Rolovich asked: “What’s the best strategy?” Do you attend games during UH’s bye week or do you wait for the playoffs (but risk missing a team that does not qualify for the postseason)?
Wait for playoffs! It gives you an opportunity to look at some talents from the outer islands. Also, update your TWC account so you can watch XCAST to keep an eye on D2 talents.

  52. whitey August 30, 2016 1:17 pm

These questions asked by Coach Rolovich are good and fair, but to rate or grade this team on 1 game is not good. Will get a better feel of team and coaches after their 3rd game.

  53. PONO August 30, 2016 1:28 pm

    1. Fire ROLO, nah nah it was a calculated risk
    2. I love the white helmets, they are clean.
    3. I will go to more games because this team is more exciting.
    4. Go to any game that there is a good matchup so you can see how the perform against top competition whether its regular season or playoffs, no matter.

  54. WarriorNY August 30, 2016 1:31 pm

    1. Onside kick was great.
    2. White helmets –I’m not a fan…(can we ever go back to those all black unis with colt and co?)
    3. Enjoyed the aggressive offense. Even if we lose, it’ll be entertaining when I’m staying up till 4 am to finish the game…
    4. No clue.

  55. ALLAN August 30, 2016 1:37 pm

ROLO: NO ASK QUESTIONS; YOU TOO BUSY. IF YOU GOTTA ASK QUESTIONS, NO READ ANSWERS; TO MUCH UNECESSARY RUBBISH GOING CLUTTER YOUR MIND. MEK YOU NO TINK STRAIGHT.

  56. HILORAINS August 30, 2016 1:46 pm

    1. No
    2. I like the white helmets, save the dark green for when we use all black uni’s (special games)
    3. attending game no matter this year again
    4. maybe UH can host 2 HS games a week at TC Ching Field?????

  57. Manoa Mist August 30, 2016 1:51 pm

    Hey Coach Rolo!!
    1. Okay, loved the onside kick. Play to win the game, don’t play not to lose.
    2. I don’t care what helmets you wear, although I do like the dark green (black) ones.
    3. We ain’t going to no more games because of the Cal game. UH still the Gang That Can’t Shoot Straight, too many interceptions and fumbles. However, we did order Pay Per View this season just because Rolo is our coach and we want to support him.
    4. Do not wait until the playoffs to scout. Also think building relationships with our high school coaches is more important than scouting these games. If the kid can play, and these coaches are your brothers, they will tell you. You won’t have to go looking for them.
In our family, we were just happy we didn’t have to look at a yelling, pist off, grumpy old man on the sidelines anymore. We all love Rolo in fact we eating Rolos now and they should pass that candy out at UH home games.

  58. Former UH Athlete August 30, 2016 2:10 pm

    RE: Rolo’s Questions:
    1. Not me
    2. Thumbs up to the white helmets
    3. I go to games because I’m an alumni and former athlete at UH, but now have kids, so time available has been cut down.
    4. Best strategy… Attend games where you have the highest concentration of “gettable” targets. For the rest, watch games on posted by “others” on youtube/vimeo/or other streaming video site. (I don’t know how deep the NCAA monitors high school game viewing outside of in-person attendance).

  59. Shoko August 30, 2016 2:15 pm

I thought the onside kick, which already has low success rate, was unnecessary and by doing so you put the kicker, who is pulling triple duty this season, at risk for injury when he tried to recover the ball.

It’s the first game of a long season. Have to be smarter when putting a key player like Rigo unnecessarily in the line of fire.

  60. HawaiiMongoose August 30, 2016 2:24 pm

    1. The onside kick was great
    2. Not a fan of the white helmets; our best branding ever was the black uniforms with dark green helmets; still it’s the team call
    3. Have had season tickets for 22 years, would be there either way but really happy with how the guys played (except for the fumbles)
    4. Don’t wait for the playoffs

  61. Akamai Okole August 30, 2016 2:29 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

I’ll answer all 3 this way: See ya in the Big House!

  62. Akamai Okole August 30, 2016 2:31 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos….

Here’s my answers to Coach Rolo:

    Question 1 – Hell no…ballsy call…I loved it.

Question 2 – Gotta give it a thumbs sideways. I like the black helmet design (black is my favorite color and I feel it is more intimidating) but the white helmets were ok.

Question 3 – I go to the games because I’m a Warrior fan. Been a fan since I was a kid and went with my dad when Aloha Stadium was still open seating.

Question 4 – Is the rule watch them in person??? If it is, then I would watch the big boys in the playoffs….and maybe catch the other teams on OCSports during the regular season. Also, read this blog and see if names pop up for coaches to take a look at….some of those guys are on smaller, unseen teams but might be diamonds in the rough. 🙂

Condolences to the Dowis Ohana…Man, I remember watching him play.

  66. warrior99 August 30, 2016 2:53 pm

    Liked the onside kick call

White helmets are good, would prefer them mixed with color jerseys and pants rather than all white

    Will attend games

    Watch during playoffs

  67. Warrior Nation August 30, 2016 3:05 pm

Onside kick – great call! You show that you’re aggressive. That’s exciting football.

White Helmets- Awesome!!! Please don’t go back to using that retro rainbow uniform. Just my opinion

Games – I would attend the games if I could but I’m in the mainland. I will however watch all games on TV. I haven’t done that all of last season!

Now, I ask if you coach , could you please go back to us being the Warriors. Take the Rainbow out of it..

    Go Warriors!

  68. z August 30, 2016 3:22 pm

No to firing. I have a feeling things will get better. Will always support the team.

  69. z August 30, 2016 3:23 pm

To coach. Just do what you gotta do!

  70. rebelwarrior August 30, 2016 3:24 pm

    1. Hell yah go for broke!
    2. White Helmet ok. Bring back Silver and Dark Green. Matte finish?
    3. All in.

  71. Hilo-Warrior August 30, 2016 3:31 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko’s,

On the kick: I was for that call. I did not expect it. I don’t think Cal expected it either. But like it was mentioned earlier, the kick was a little hard and give credit to the Cal player for being aware. And Coach, the thought of you being replaced never even crossed my mind. I believe in you. You and your staff got the team in a position to do things that we as fans have not seen in years. You are the man for the job and I like many other have faith in you. The onside kick was an aggressive call. We need more things like that to excite the players.

Helmet: I loved the white helmet. I don’t know about it being the only helmet. But I would love to see them as the road helmet. Or possibly mixed in the way that we used to have the silver helmet. If the white helmet goes on sale I would buy it.

Tickets: Unfortunately I live in San Antonio. So if I can make games on the Mainland I will. I want to make a trip for a home game. But that might have to wait until next season. But if I still lived in the Islands I would be a season ticket holder. I think you guys need to schedule a smack down of these UTSA Roadrunners. They think they could beat us. HA!

Anyway, Cal was a tough loss. Couple turnovers and the leaping call made the difference. Keep moving forward. The MWC better watch out. Roll has pride rock coming back.

    Go Warriors!!!

  72. obscure August 30, 2016 3:41 pm

White helmets would be better with white facemasks and w/o tribal stripe down the middle. Also, just use the dark green ones for practice, and get matte black helmets for games to go with black uniforms.

  73. pakipark August 30, 2016 3:42 pm

Onside kick. Okay, not a bad idea could have been executed better.

Win or lose, as long as the Warriors play tough to the end, I’ll go to the games. Don’t go to every game because not young like before. Still have season tickets and I go to the home conference games. Been going to games since Coach Dave Holmes days. Ah, the Old Stadium. Those were the days. Keep the white helmets. Holmes, Price, Tomey, Wagner, used white helmets. Bring back the home Kelly green tops and white rainbow striped pants. But keep the “H” on the helmet.
Bring back those small reward warrior helmet stickers. That’s all.

  74. pakipark August 30, 2016 3:47 pm

Wait, I think we had gold ? helmets at one time. My memory escapes me.

  75. Maui Boy August 30, 2016 3:52 pm

    1. No to onside. Not on the first play. minus 7 points as a result.
    2. No to white helmets. Not good for Marketing. Bland like Penn State.
    3. Offense looks more exciting. Will attend more games from Maui this year.

  76. greenthumb August 30, 2016 3:59 pm

    Intermission….

^^^anyone else notice the search box up there?^^^

  77. Abunai August 30, 2016 4:14 pm

1- thumbs up on onside kick

    2- white helmets are awesome

3- season ticket holder since 1997.

4- just show local talents da love and respect they deserve. They will follow great leadership.

  78. RainboWarrior August 30, 2016 4:16 pm

Throw more trick plays in there like when Michael Carter would throw the ball to one side and then they would throw it to him on the other.

I like the black helmets better but the white was nice!

Watch the junky teams during the bye and the good ones when playoff time.

  79. Tempmanoa August 30, 2016 4:22 pm

Here is how a famous coach explained an onside kick on the opening kickoff (cannot recall his name): Paraphrased: I knew that we would probably need an onside kick at some point to win or stay in this game. So I wanted to pick the best time for the onside and that would be sometime in the game well before we needed to kick one and what better time to not need an onside kick than the opening kickoff! There is one other good time that I would try, but I won’t tell you when that is.

  80. iceebear August 30, 2016 4:32 pm

My impression was that the kicker on the onside did not sell it well resulting in Cal knowing what was up. His approach to the ball was not like a normal kickoff, but looked odd and weak. This is basic special teams common sense to mask what you are doing. I bet the Cal players were saying to themselves, what was that?

  81. SailorBlue August 30, 2016 4:32 pm

    1. Onside kick. No fire Rolo. Like the thought process, unpredictability, and aggressiveness behind the call. Would have moved it to right after the 1st score though.

    2. Helmets. No matter, like them both.

    3. We’re season ticket holders. We go to all the games and stay to the very end no matter the score or the weather.

    4. No opinion. Go when is best for your schedule.

  82. Peskadot August 30, 2016 4:58 pm

    Chee my 1st post.

All balls on da insides kick. I liked the call.

All white, all black, all mean. No forget through in da green, and da rainbow one is killaz too.

I stay mainland DC so no can but when living at home I try go at least 3 games a season with my ohana. 5 people can get expensive. We like the good kin seats.

Scoring live, coaches, Power house teams, keep your line in da water bumbie u hanapaa

  83. kalua pig August 30, 2016 6:43 pm

what was the on side kick tactic?was it to kick it to the up man and hope for a bad bounce?

  84. Coach DB August 30, 2016 7:32 pm

Your job is to put pressure on the other team, you are rebuilding this team’s personnel and culture. Do your thing coach, ruffle feathers shake it up! Hell I’d rather burn out than rust out! Empty the freakin playbook Bruh!

Loved the WHITE Helmets, maybe if we start winning you’ll reward the team with some nice CHROME Helmets next season!

PS; We need more ‘SPEED’ (Code Word) at the RECEIVER positions JUCO TIME!

  85. oneseason August 30, 2016 7:44 pm

    1. You now have every opponent worried you might try something risky. That seems like a good thing.
    2. Thumbs up. Maybe add a Rainbow to the white helmets.
    3. We already have season tickets, but we won’t be tempted to leave at the end of the first half anymore.
    4. Go to the games with the best food and watch the rest on TV 🙂

  86. FearGod August 30, 2016 7:46 pm

How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?”
David A.K. Matlin would you be willing to give us your take on the kick 🙂

  87. A-House August 30, 2016 7:57 pm

#1: no to firing Coach for the onside kick to start the game – surprised, but delighted that he made the decision to go for it

#2: white unis ok, but would like to see the white “retros” with the flaming feet warrior on the helmet

#3: season ticket holder since 1969 — missed 4 years being in the Army

#4: scouting – agree to building a relationship with ALL coaches – allow them the margin to provide input into players – use the community for leads – there are many well informed people who would love to see more “local boys” stay home – gather all the information — analyze it — set out “options” on how to “scout” players on ALL islands – select the best option/execute plan — always get “feed back” to determine the success of the plan

  88. A-House August 30, 2016 7:59 pm

    bryson:

last chance for the tickets — call me — 592-5012

  89. laulauhead August 30, 2016 8:06 pm

    Rolo,

    Fired? Hellllll No!!

    White helmets are cherry!

I am a Warrior for life, bleed green. I will always support the team.

Ballers are ballers. It shouldn’t matter which game you decide to go, you’ll know if they will live aloha, play Warrior.

    Mahalos coach… #beatmichigan

  90. cappie the dog August 30, 2016 8:15 pm

I’m okay with the onside kick.
I’m okay with the white helmets.
I’m going to attend most of the home games.

The onside kick didn’t shock me.
Bringing in Coach Holtz shocked me.

  91. Boya_jr August 30, 2016 8:32 pm

I like the no fear approach. Keeps the opponents and fans guessing.

I like the white helmets better than the silver ones

My first UH football game I attended I was less than one years old. Now I live in the Bay Area so you’ll see me at the Reno and SJ road games for sure. Go Warriors!

  92. HanaBrada August 30, 2016 8:43 pm

    Howzit Coach Rolo,

Onside kick was great idea but poorly designed or executed. Kicked it straight to Cal player. Instead, practice bouncing it high enough in the air to allow our first man down the field to “takeout” the would-be receiver before he can grab the ball (it’s legal; seen it done in a college game before), allowing our next player(s) to win the ball.
Love the dark green helmets better.
Great job by the Oline & running backs, but what’s up with the weak floating snaps to the qb? Throws the rhythm off & wastes valuable time.
Need to improve the defensive backfield, tackling & special teams.
Despite the first game loss, I think you’ve got the team heading in the right direction with the right attitude. A definite improvement over the last regime. Keep up the good work, good luck with a great season.
    Go Warriors!

  93. kev-1 August 30, 2016 9:07 pm

    1. Heck no should you be fired for the onside kick. I love the creativity.
    2. LOVE the white helmets. I am a big fan of variety and mixing it up. So I think we should have the dark green, white, matte black, gray, you name it. Oregon style.
    3. Enjoy what I saw on the field and think the mistakes are in the “correctable” category. For me, I would go regardless, but I can see it putting more in the seats.
    4. Go watch the teams that aren’t predicted to make the playoffs during the bye week and catch everyone else during the playoffs.

    RIGHT ON ROLO!!!!

  94. Bryson August 30, 2016 9:25 pm

Mr A-House I’ll give you a call in the morning about the tickets…Thank You

  95. seewhy August 30, 2016 9:25 pm

    1. Not fired.
    2. White on white is G.
    3. Will be there no matter the outcome.
    4. There’s always Xcast. But I’d say go with whatever works with your schedule.

  96. z August 30, 2016 10:48 pm

So Rolo asked Harbaugh for tape of scrimmage. No dice. So they saw us play in a game so there will be very few surprises for them. Chicken kaka. Why are they so afraid of the Warriors?

    Well they should be!

  97. NYUH August 30, 2016 11:21 pm

I wanted him fired after the second kick (just kidding) but noticed that the kicker slipped.

    White helmets. No, not really.

    Excited about the next game.

  98. hilosupaman August 31, 2016 12:22 am

    > “How many people wanted me fired after the onside kick?”
Making that call took cojones! On the first play of your HC career none the less. Calls like that are tough, but the fact that you had the cojones and speaks volumes of your confidence in your staff and players. Eddie would go!

    > “Thumbs up or thumbs down on the white helmets?”
I think the white helmets were awesome, kind of a storm trooper ish feel. I think overall the helmets are the best in football! I just wish the rest of the uniform had a similar design. Like the Nike ones. Any chance we go back to those or something similar? Since UA contract is up might be a good time.

    > “How many more people are going to go to a game because of the way our guys played?”
I would watch the games either way cause they are our guys! But I will say this, I am currently deployed for the year so I will miss the season. After that performance I will be watching regardless of what time the games come on here. After my year is up I get to move back to da aina! So I will be at many games next season!

    > The NCAA allows UH to watch each high school team play only one game in the fall. Rolovich asked: “What’s the best strategy?” Do you attend games during UH’s bye week or do you wait for the playoffs (but risk missing a team that does not qualify for the postseason)?
That’s a tough one cause you want to see them play under the bright lights. I’m assuming this means you can watch a team like St.Louis in the playoffs and if they just so happen played Kahuku and you already watched Kahuku during regular season this would be allowed? I guess my point is watch the smaller schools particularly ones that aren’t expected to be in playoffs during regular season and wait for playoffs for the powerhouse teams.

Overall, this is really cool of you Coach Rolo! I love what you are doing with the team and look forward to the rest of the season and the seasons to come! IMUA WARRIORS!

  99. hilosupaman August 31, 2016 12:26 am

Also, having streaming options for the games for those of us not on island or for my case, in country would be great!

  100. hitmanhart August 31, 2016 12:27 am

#1: no to firing Coach for the onside kick to start the game , should use it one more time after UH 2ND TD.
    2. Thumbs down, brite green would work !! and go back to the old way of putting sticker on them when they did good !!
3.did order again Pay Per View for 2016 season ( live on big island )
    4. rolo watch the 1st quater of high school game that way you 4 games per school !! lol

  101. S.peezy55 August 31, 2016 12:42 am

Whoa!! Kavapalu is a big dude, that’s a big catch by Rolo. Glad to have him on board.

  102. Raider Dogs August 31, 2016 1:00 am

Would have love to see it used at Michigan instead. I wished we used it against Ohio St last year. My thoughts when you play a team highly rated at their house on opening day on the opening kick off they are so fired up to run the kick off back that was the best time to use it. But I loved that you are willing to take a chance, but I wished you had saved it for Michigan instead. Helmets were good. I’m a season ticket holder and road warrior fan (went to both Ohio St and Australia games).
