Where did our football team go?

j/k Go Bows!!! We’ll get the crap beat out of us this week but hopefully not hurt. Save it for conference play!

what’s the status of kennedy’s appeal to get reinstated?

what was the problem with mulanga’s paperwork that prevented him from going to Australia?

was there a field issue at ANZ stadium? noticed only our players were losing footing and slipping all game long.

Why does da media keep referring to Americans as black, white, Hispanic, or Asian when da rest of da world refers to us as Americans with no color reference. Shouldn’t da media be called a racist or hypocrites because that’s what they are. They call people racist when in fact, da media is da most vocal racist.

  8. RB August 29, 2016 1:26 pm

Aloha Stadium made the list. Stadium looks like an absolute junkyard, but that’s not the only reason it made it onto our list. You can also thank the fighting fans, who have got a bit of a rep for bad behaviour.

Clyde, previous post. Here is one with Webb throwing about 20 yds for a TD. No YAC. I thought there was another long one lofted up too.

The picture of Aloha Stadium on Sportingz.com is an old picture. There has been ongoing maintenance/restoration work over the past couple of years. The condition of Aloha Stadium today is not accurately reflected.

  11. tom-warriornation August 29, 2016 1:39 pm

Read that Cal make $1M for playing this game; and we got $300-400K. Why the big difference?

  12. azwarrior22 August 29, 2016 1:41 pm

While the Warriors will be decided underdogs, they still have to line up and play the game and you never know what may happen on game day. Wasn’t it Appalachian St. that beat Michigan a few years back?

I’m also not a believer in IW. He doesn’t have the “it” factor. Let’s see how long Rolo sticks with IW.

  13. H-Man August 29, 2016 1:58 pm

In Wahine volleyball the coaching staff was faced with a close setter competition between veteran Tayler Higgins and incoming freshman Norene Iosia. Over the course of the first two games of the season, both losses, the coaching staff elected to start the freshman Iosisa who has performed well. The Warriors’ football coaching staff faced a similar situation with a veteran returning quarterback and two incoming newbie quarterbacks that were graded so closely that it was difficult to name a starter. In the end the veteran quarterback graded the highest and started the first game against Cal. While the veteran had a decent game, it was obvious that there was much room for improvement in his passing game. The next game at Ann Arbor will be a monumental task and highly unlikely for the Warriors to deliver a win, so why not insert the next quarterback in the game. Will the head coach insert the “second” quarterback to see how he performs in a game situation?

What is the meaning of life? Why is the Earth round? Will DPK be coming to the Tgate??? LMAO

  15. SC August 29, 2016 2:09 pm

Can you let me know the status of Luke Clements? He was number 70 last year but I cannot find his name on the 2016 roster.

  16. clyde August 29, 2016 2:10 pm

H-Man: Respectfully, it’s almost a fair analogy except Iosia was an All-American as a freshman and junior, and was named the nation’s No. 1 setter as a senior. I like what I’ve seen from AZ and DB, but neither are in the same category as Iosia.

islandman: That was a nice pass from Webb, but how could he miss when the receiver was open by 10 yards and it wasn’t a very deep pass, either. BTW: On that play, they faked a screen and the receiver curled around the clutter (a defender and another receiver), and left (Henderson?) in the dust. It was beautifully designed, and no doubt set up by the numerous screen plays that preceded it.

    11. UH was supposed to get $750,000 plus “full the UH travel and accommodation costs for up to 200 people in the UH traveling party, which includes round-trip airfare, in-country transportation and up to six nights in a hotel. The university will also receive a twenty percent commission on the net revenue of any advertising, either through the stadium or domestic television.”

Haggar needs to keep his eye on the ball when catching.

  28. Ipu Man August 29, 2016 3:24 pm

Because it was a “home” game for Cal,
they had to bring in the goal posts and
lots of stuff (referees?) so they get more
    money…

  29. Ipu Man August 29, 2016 3:27 pm

What color pants will Hardball wear at the game?

  30. Ipu Man August 29, 2016 3:28 pm

So what unis will UH wear?

  31. Ipu Man August 29, 2016 3:29 pm

    Should wear green
to blend in with the grass
    ala Boise State…

  32. Sangamon Keith August 29, 2016 3:36 pm

Why isn’t your coverage more thorough about UH football? You have three reporters/columnists who could provide a lot more detail about the team and that doesn’t come through to the average fan. There’s way too much discussion about the Athletic Department and the State high school organizations. Most sport section readers want more about players, games or coaching strategies … you should leave the controversies and organizational news to the City Desk and leave the Sports Desk to the sports and athletes themselves.

  33. islandman August 29, 2016 3:45 pm

What was the penalty called on Cal’s punt for. Bobby C and Veneri seem to think it was for jumping near the center or something. I thought it was for the UH player leaving his feet near the three Cal players blocking for the Cal punter ?

  34. z August 29, 2016 3:47 pm

When will they finish the rail work around the stadium? Looks to be heavier every time I pass there.

  35. NotNasti August 29, 2016 3:50 pm

  36. Luki August 29, 2016 3:51 pm

Any back story on last minute O-Line shuffle before game?

We going to see RB Davis get in this game?

When the game was out of reach, why no Zwahlen?

  37. tom August 29, 2016 3:54 pm

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

The Warrior World has always been more akin to people talking about this and that, not necessarily about football.
The sports section of the paper is more the nuts and bolts of what’s happening in the field

  38. shadow August 29, 2016 3:55 pm

Also curious about the latest on:
    Max Hendrie?
    Kennedy T?
    Luke Clements?

  39. C-Pop August 29, 2016 3:57 pm

Any chance Curran and Veneri broadcast team get replaced?

  40. (Jesse)James August 29, 2016 4:07 pm

    IslandMan.

In 2012, the NCAA approved a new rule about leaping and made it a personal foul. This new rule prohibiting players from leaping over blockers in an attempt to block a punt was first observed during the 2012 season. According to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel “receiving-team players trying to jump over a shield-blocking scheme has become popular for teams in punt formation. Receiving-team players try to defeat this scheme by rushing into the backfield to block a punt. In some cases, these players are contacted and end up flipping in the air and landing on their head or shoulders.

The Football Rules Committee raised concern about this type of action and proposed a rule similar to the leaping rule on place kicks that does not allow the receiving team to jump over blockers, unless the player jumps straight up or between two players.”

  41. clyde August 29, 2016 4:08 pm

islandman: Both Curran and Veneri admitted to not seeing the play in question, and it was pretty obvious from Veneri’s explanation on radio.

In 2012, the NCAA adopted a rule that said a player who leaps over the wall of blockers protecting the punter will incur a 15-yard penalty, much like how you can’t leap over the center on a place-kick. I think it’s OK to jump straight up or between two players. In the case of the Cal game, the UH player engaged the middle guy of the three-man shield.

Apparently, the rule is designed to protect the leaping player because too many times they get flipped over and land on their heads or shoulders.

So, yes, it’s in the rule book. Costly lesson for UH.

  42. clyde August 29, 2016 4:09 pm

    Oops.
    Sorry for the redundancy.

  43. (Jesse)James August 29, 2016 4:16 pm

    Specifically, Rule 9-1-11c :

“No defensive player who is inside the tackle box may try to block a punt by leaving his feet in an attempt to leap directly over an opponent.”

  44. islandman August 29, 2016 4:22 pm

So the game telecasters in Bristol,CT had a better perspective on this play than Curran and Veneri at the game.

  45. clyde August 29, 2016 4:30 pm

In Curran and Veneri’s defense, they’re watching the game live so it’s easy to miss something as innocuous as a punt play. On the other hand, the announcers in Bristol were privvy to numerous replays.

  46. islandman August 29, 2016 4:47 pm

Add special teams tackler to Rigo’s resume. Per an attendee at Na Koa luncheon today, Rigo made two tackles on kickoffs. But i see only one in the stats.

  47. z August 29, 2016 4:58 pm

When your kicker making tackles you have a problem.

  48. cocobean August 29, 2016 6:01 pm

The Cal game showed a lot of positives but it showed the team has a long way to go before they can be called a fundamentally sound, assignment disciplined and a team that won’t beat itself. The coaches can’t coach up size or speed but they can coach up the team in the other areas.

  49. Akamai Okole August 29, 2016 6:03 pm

    Great Afternoon All?

  51. Inyoface August 29, 2016 6:36 pm

I liked the jumbo package resulting in a touchdown inside the 5, good to know we can do that. Forget Michigan running up the score I hope we don’t run up the score in them! Screw them!

  52. Rodney August 29, 2016 7:07 pm

Why is Isaiah Bernard not in
    the game?.

  53. Carl August 29, 2016 7:22 pm

Will Rolo reveal the new mascot, or announce he’s bringing back Villi, before the UT Martin game or will the new mascot, or Villi, be a surprise at Aloha Stadium?

  54. Turfwar August 29, 2016 7:23 pm

    Whatever happened to Faith Yanagi?

  55. Rodney August 29, 2016 7:36 pm

    What happen to the Pistol
    scheme?

  56. A-House August 29, 2016 7:56 pm

what was the reason(s) UH coaching staff did NOT play #2 and #3 QBs?

disappointed as I wanted to see both in game situations – practice isn’t the same even tho coaches try to simulate “game situations”.

1st – how do you create game situations when the opponent is bigger, stronger, faster than your players?

2nd – same as the 1st — did UH coaches get “fooled” with a new QB/WR combos that ran circles around UH secondary – was it play called or failure to account for superior opponent?

  57. kev-1 August 29, 2016 7:58 pm

Do you intend to answer any of the above questions?

Why do we know more about disciplined players on other teams, like Note Dame, FSU, etc. Than we do our own team?

  58. burro sabio August 29, 2016 8:09 pm

Why don’t people try to find answers on their own instead of asking?

  59. 808 August 29, 2016 8:32 pm

    Kaepernick?

Cut him if he becomes a distraction and start Gabbert until they can draft a QB. Since Harbaugh left SF, Kaepernick hasn’t been the same.

    —————————————

I hope next season Hawaii starts off with a more softer schedule where they can get some W’s going into conference play. Playing 3 power 5 conference teams in the first 4 games on the road is not a good way to get started. When Rolo gets his own recruits in, then maybe schedule 2 middle to lower end teams from power 5 conferences.

This could be a 1 – 3 start at best or an 0 – 4 start at worst. It would be tough if Hawaii always played teams like Michigan every year at the start of the year. Unless, they are doing it for the money to help their bottom line.

It would be difficult for them if they always start off with a brutal schedule and get beaten up before conference play.

  60. kev-1 August 29, 2016 8:43 pm

#58… People are asking questions because we were told to ask.

Today’s blog topic is probably a cruel joke.

  61. al August 29, 2016 8:46 pm

    808…

    2017 non conference schedule

SEP 2 (SAT) TBA VS WESTERN CAROLINA
    ALOHA STADIUM

    SEP 9 (SAT) TBA

    PASADENA, CALIF.

OCT 7 (SAT) TBA AT MASSACHUSETTS
    AMHERST, MASS.

NOV 25 (SAT) TBA VS BRIGHAM YOUNG
    AT ALOHA STADIUM

    PLUS one more non-conference game.

  62. islandman August 29, 2016 8:52 pm

    59. Next year, i see Western Carolina and UCLA at the start of the season on the schedule, then later UMass. and BYU.

  63. kev-1 August 29, 2016 8:57 pm

I have an answer … Kaepernick will not be the starter this year. More has changed about him than his weight. Bruddah’s looking a little off.

  64. 808 August 29, 2016 9:12 pm

#61, That schedule seems less daunting. There was a time UH was competitive with BYU. The 2001 game where Hawaii put up I think 72 on them and spoiled their perfect season was a nice game. With Rolo’s spread offense, maybe we can see more of those types of high scoring offense.

The first game was a nice start – 31 points. Only once Hawaii scored more than 31 points last year and that was against UC Davis (FCS). With the new offense, the horizon looks a lot more promising for Hawaii than the previous years.

Maybe Woolsey can do something special this year. Or, he could just revert back to the mean (~50%). We’ll see.

  65. burro sabio August 29, 2016 9:45 pm

Why do people ask question about stuff already answered in this blog or the pages of the SA?

  67. jm2375 August 29, 2016 11:32 pm
