Questions?

It’s a short week — the Warriors depart on Wednesday, a day earlier than usual for a road game — which means we’re going back to our Monday routine: Send us your UH football questions. We’ll post answers Wednesday on the Warrior Beat and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Nick Rolovich said we’ll work on a live chat, just like the old days, probably next week. But Rolovich will pose three questions tomorrow.

    Question for Coach:

Why does it appear that Paul Harris & Steven Lakalaka have more positive yardage per touch than Diocemy St. Juste?

Coach Rolovitz—why did the team give up on Saturday? This was homecoming against against a UNLV team that, earlier, got crushed by a team that we crushed.

Ah. I stand corrected by Anoddah Dave. He has the first question.

  8. Inyoface October 17, 2016 7:14 am

Why isn’t Lakalaka or Harris starting? I don’t get it.

  9. Cook 'Em October 17, 2016 7:35 am

No live blog please, coach. Save for next season. As much as we would love it, you’ve got so much on your plate already. Go Bows!

  10. palolo_2LA October 17, 2016 7:38 am

Coach, are we going to see other players get some playing time @ WR and Slot? Seems some players have had issues with catching the ball for the last few years.

  11. PONO October 17, 2016 7:45 am

    Coach,
Will you emphasize increasing team speed on defense in recruiting? Looks like we just can’t keep up with teams that have good speed at the skill positions.

  12. Ipu Man October 17, 2016 7:48 am

I’ve seen coaches make players who fumble or who can’t catch the ball,
carry a ball with them 24/7, to class, to bed, to practice, etc.
    Will you do that???

  13. Ipu Man October 17, 2016 7:50 am

If so, tweet out to all UH students, that if they see
any players on campus with a football, to sneak up
behind them, and try to hit the ball out of their hands.
    🙂 🙂 🙂

  14. H-Man October 17, 2016 8:20 am

The students showed up on Saturday. It was refreshing. Thanks to the students for helping make Saturday at Aloha Stadium a fun night.

  15. cheepono October 17, 2016 8:24 am

how does the coaching staff approach situations where verbally committed recruits publicly state they are still waiting and open to hear from “such and such school”?

  16. Inyoface October 17, 2016 8:41 am

Hawaii’s defense is much better when running a 3-4 in my opinion.

  17. George October 17, 2016 9:33 am

To the Coaches and the Team: You asked us to come out and support you and wear Green. We did that. You didn’t hold up your end of the deal. No excuses. All the teams are even. Shape Up!!

  18. RB October 17, 2016 9:41 am

Coach, what’s the status will Daniel Lewis? His he done playing for the season?

  19. Petey808 October 17, 2016 9:46 am

Coach Rolo, are we looking at changing up the uniforms/helmets? I remember recruits saying they really liked our black helmets and tapa on the pants. Seems like we’ve been wearing the same uniform all season.

  20. warriorsanddolphins October 17, 2016 10:06 am

    Coach Rolo,
Previous coaching staffs would always complain about recruits that only wanted to come to Hawaii for a vacation on their recruiting visit. Do you still see this happening?

  21. Boolakanaka October 17, 2016 10:06 am

    Headman,

You were, as most of us were also, discouraged by the game–that said, what elements of the game encouraged you??

  22. Bryson October 17, 2016 10:18 am

Wow the trolls are out in full force today, you would’ve thought we got blown out 41-0 with some of the comments..lol…I bet they’ve been waiting since the Arizona game to rear their ugly heads again…

  23. Derek October 17, 2016 10:38 am

Coach, I noticed that all the kick offs were short. Was that by design and what was the reason for that? Thanks.

  24. islandman October 17, 2016 10:40 am

Some people who want Harris or Lakalaka were the ones who wanted Saint Juste before ?

  25. NorthShoreFan October 17, 2016 10:51 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Didn’t get to see or hear the game but from what I’m reading me thinks the game results wasn’t on Brown. Yes, the fumble might have led to the game winning FG but it was only one of many mistakes that led to the out come. A dropped pass here a missed tackle there and missed assignments, these all contribute to a bad day at the ball park.
These are correctable. The boyz played to win because nobody plays to lose. To some it seems they felt the effort or enthusiasm wasn’t there. I don’t know.
I’m encouraged by the points we do put up. Much better than the past few years….with a lot of the same players too.
Looking for a different result this week.
Keys…? defend option with discipline..need to stay in position to make plays. By land or air we need to defend man on man. I want to see only 200 total by the Falcons and 400+ by the Warriors!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  26. islandman October 17, 2016 10:57 am

    23. Bobby said something about that UH thinks that they can stop opposing teams within the 25 yard line on the kickoffs not into the end zone, which they did for the most part vs. UNLV. If the ball goes into the end zone for a touchback, the opponent gets the ball at the 25.

  27. NorthShoreFan October 17, 2016 10:59 am

When one of the backs reel off a good one then people all say he should be in more. St Juste runs well, then he should be the one…Hey let the coaching call the personnel. I don’t know enough about the players or the play that’s going to be run to make any judgement. To date, they’ve all contributed to the team.
We need to get mentally stronger and focused. Trust the coaches, trust the scheme and trust your abilities. Play with your hair on fire!

Seems to me that t-shirt company can move fast. Great job with getting or fans “in uniform” for the game. Might want to teach administration how you do it.

  28. Maddog50 October 17, 2016 11:02 am

    Kalen Hicks redshirt or play?

    JGW healed?

    Daniel Lewis-healed?

  30. hilorain October 17, 2016 11:43 am

Coach Rolo, do you get tired of reading questions that you answered in past weeks? I.E. livestreaming, uniforms, etc.

  31. H-Man October 17, 2016 11:47 am

I thought Paul Harris had a better night on Saturday than St Juste. Maybe St Juste will have a better night next time. Or Lakalaka. Just play the one showing the best results to put the team in a position to win.

  32. Jenny Tails October 17, 2016 12:21 pm

Was the team still only “hoping to win” against UNLV? or were they over-expecting to win (so that’s why they came out flat)?

  33. Jeezy33 October 17, 2016 12:26 pm

    Question.
Why doesn’t Kemp use his hands to make catches? And does Dru Brown purposely under throw the deep ball to Kemp so he can come back to the ball and make the basket catch which kemp is comfortable with ?

  34. clyde October 17, 2016 12:41 pm

Coach Rolo: On the final possession with 49 seconds remaining, why did the team opt for three consecutive 25-yard pass attempts rather than work underneath the coverage for the 40 yards needed to get into FG position? Were the deep passes dictated by UNLV’s defensive alignment or the result of the QB’s decision-making? Would you attack differently if faced with a similar situation in the future?

I think the answer to this is if you’re head coach at homecoming and the score is close, you’d (as coach) better be prepared to make some tough decisions/have some kind of plan when the score is close and you’re near the end of the game.

That and plmake sure your players aren’t asleep/know where they are and for what.

It’s Monday and many are still p o’d about this.

  37. LeikoReiko October 17, 2016 1:32 pm

Wish we could have celebrated a win on Saturday like they do in the Chinese Arena Football League!!! Hopefully we can this week at AirForce

  38. Akamai Okole October 17, 2016 1:45 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Rolo,

Saw your pre-game talk before San Jose St….awesome.

Was there some kind of redirect done prior to UNLV given the comments you made about pregame warmups?

  39. Akamai Okole October 17, 2016 1:52 pm

You didn’t hold up your end of the deal.

    👿

Mebbe time for re-evaluate wacchu tink “da deal” is?

28,000+ still in their seats up until the last 0:15 of the game. Why? Cause still “get chance”

I’m in it for the entertainment of watching CFB and go into it wanting to feel like “get chance” no mattah who Hawaii playing.

To those tryna enhance their lifestyles risking 6 to make 5, like buy one bridge? 😳 😆 😈

  40. Kris October 17, 2016 2:00 pm

Why did Coach Rolovich abandon the Run N Shoot?

  41. kapakahi October 17, 2016 2:11 pm

Are any official recruiting visits for mainland recruits to Hawaii being scheduled for any of the remaining UH home games (so that the prospective recruits can experience the home game environment first-hand)?…..and/or possibly even the year-end team banquet?

  42. kapakahi October 17, 2016 2:14 pm

With this year’s team being competitive in the MWC (when compared to the past 4 seasons), what noticeable differences (if any) have the assistant coaches noticed (since MWC conference games started) in the level of interest from local Hawaii HS prospects?……..as well as from prospective Cali HS prospects (especially those also being recruited by other MWC programs)?

  43. Dennis October 17, 2016 2:18 pm

Curious, why does the defense only relies on a four down linemen scheme? Other defensive schemes like five down linemen is best against the opponent’s running game by filling the gaps and covering sweeps, it promotes greater pass rush and gang tackling. The four down linemen scheme should be used as pass prevent situation it is weak against the run especially if the linebackers are out of position.
The defense may want to shift defensive looks like line up a four linemen set then shift to a five men set. As the late Dave Eldredge told me, football is a game of deceptions. We score they don’t!!!!

  44. J-Dog October 17, 2016 2:46 pm

    Coach Rolovich,

Any chance we bring back the on-field loudspeakers and use the “EO Na Toa E” chant music from 2006-07? It hyped up the defensive players and fans when we needed those crucial 3rd and 4th down stops. I believe Mike Post (theme music creator for Law and Order, SVU, etc.) gave the rights to the music to UH. That was chicken skin. Our defense could use any psychological advantage.

  45. haka October 17, 2016 2:50 pm

Coach, with Air Force and New Mexico posing the same defensive challenge this week and next, would it be okay if we fill Aloha Stadium and rock the house with pride for the rest of the season? #realfansbringthejuice

    Live Aloha!
    Cheer Warrior!

  46. whitey October 17, 2016 2:51 pm

How much time are your coaches spending on correcting tackling and pass catching

  47. Down with... October 17, 2016 3:05 pm

Not to be hard on a player but why is Damien still starting? He doesn’t poses any real speed, doesn’t wrap up well, is smaller than most div1 receivers nowadays so bounces off them when trying to tackle and hasn’t had any real turnover (aside from michigan)/pass break up/ etc. isn’t there better suited personel, maybe some freshman or sophs etc?

  48. football junkie October 17, 2016 3:11 pm

    Coach Rolo,

It was obvious that our D was getting tired as the game went on and it certainly affected it’s ability to stop the run. Is the drop off from 1’s to the 2’s so drastic that we can’t rotate more of the 2’s into the game? How much time is dedicated to the second team defensive personnel during practices? Is it enough for them to contribute productively in a game?

Keep doing what you’re doing. The season ticket holders and I believe in what you’re doing. For the last four years we have been cheering for “2 free tacos” at every home game. We certainly have much more to cheer about this year!

    Live Aloha, Play Warrior!

  49. Kapahulu Guy October 17, 2016 3:54 pm

I wonder if we will ever have the High school marching bands doing the half time shows again. Can you imagine the parents who would attend to see there child performing during halftime. This should help with ticket sales

  50. cocobean October 17, 2016 4:51 pm

While driving to the game my bro asked what I thought. I answered we should be alright as long as their helmets still fit from last week. The two previous games they prepared and played like underdogs with something to prove. I can’t say how the team practiced and prepared for UNLV but I can say they didn’t match the intensity and aggression UNLV played with.

The one good thing is this should be a lesson for them to learn. That there is no focus or intensity switch that they can turn on during the game. They have build on that in practice and have the focus and intensity needed to compete at their best the moment they step off the bus.

  51. Bogeywarrior October 17, 2016 4:52 pm

    Coach,
Why don’t we use back up OLine men for the DLine since we’re so thin at this position.

  52. Kapahulu Guy October 17, 2016 5:35 pm

    Question
Why don’t we bring back the High school marching bands for Half time shows. I think this would generate some ticket sales since the parents would like to see there kids perform

  53. Pride rock October 17, 2016 7:01 pm

Why aren’t we switching Paul Harris and Diocemy around. Harris is all down back vs Diocemy who looks like a good 3rd down man.

  54. A-House October 17, 2016 7:22 pm

simplistically, DC did not plan for the “option sweeps” or the players failed to execute especially the LBers who lost the ball carrier and went after the wrong person

why were they so out of position? not only against UNLV but other teams

notice how UNLV attacked UH middle with short passes and YAC? did UNLV coaching staff outwit UH? seems, from where I sat, very little “D” adjustments for UH

lack of discipline will demolish UH against Air Force – why do certain UH WRers not catch with their hands? reach out to catch the ball, secure, and tuck in immediately – soft hands – bring the ball in by bending the elbows!

  55. The Flying O October 17, 2016 7:25 pm

    “Inyoface October 17, 2016 at 8:41 am
Hawaii’s defense is much better when running a 3-4 in my opinion.”

I’m thinking it looks that way because Kevin Lempa is using Norm Chow era players who were recruited to play 3-4 hybrid. Give Lempa some time to get his own recruits on the team and the defense should improve dramatically.

  56. Ohana Hawaii October 17, 2016 7:54 pm

Here we go again! A other lost!. If they’re planning to play like last week!

  57. kapakahi October 17, 2016 8:18 pm

Being so undersized as a DE, what did the coaching staff see in Kaimana Padello (true frosh walk-on from Mililani HS) to convince everyone that he could contribute both on defense and special teams at this level?

  58. cocobean October 17, 2016 8:28 pm

I believe if the team can hold Air Force under 30 we have a good chance of winning. I thought the same thing about the last game. Our offense has put up 30 points plus in league games despite not playing anywhere near mistake free football.

What worries me a little is the future fly boys are coming off a loss in which they gave up a ton of yards on the ground. You can bet their coaches are cracking the whip in practice and burning the midnight oil dissecting every running play we have on film. You know, I know and our coaches know that whatever defensive game plan Air Force comes out with it’ll be geared to stop the running plays they’ve seen on film. The question is what are our coaches planning to do. Will they rely on our execution or depend calling the right run in the right situation or add something we have not shown before.

If you ask me. I hope this is one game where the plan is to throw to set up the run. I would script at least the first five plays to be passes.

  59. kapakahi October 17, 2016 8:30 pm

Obviously his induction into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame is a huge personal achievement and well-deserved honor for OL Coach Chris Naeole, but how do you see this also possibly benefitting UH with respect to recruiting efforts (especially with the local HS prospects)?

  60. SHK October 17, 2016 8:48 pm

People that watch pay per view at home see the replays of all controversial plays and all angles, but how come the people that go to the game do not get to see it on the jumbotron like the other major college teams? It discourages fans and the live game experience.. Thanks!

  61. Al October 17, 2016 9:01 pm

From what I saw, St. Juste and Harris rotated by possessions.

  62. 808 October 17, 2016 9:03 pm

3 – 4 (2 – 1) is a not bad start to the season. This is a lot better start than the previous 4 years.

Winning 4 out of the last 6 games would be great. Of course, if they win 3 out of the last 6 games., that would be a good start to turning around the football program. A 6 – 7 record looks realistic.

Of the remaining games -AF, New Mexico, San Diego State and Boise State, Fresno State, UMass, which games are winnable?

New Mexico, Fresno State, UMass looks like winnable games.

If Hawaii finishes 6-7, that would be a good start to the Rolo era.

  63. hitmanhart October 17, 2016 9:51 pm

coach rolo how closes are we to see a change at qb if dru keeps fumbling the ball? and maybe having him carry the football around school and having all the team mates try and get it away from him might help !! bottom line just hope its growing pains !! best luck this week !!

  64. burro sabio October 17, 2016 9:58 pm

    Tsigh, I give up.

  65. HawaiiMongoose October 17, 2016 10:26 pm

Coach Rolovich, what’s your approach to playing a game at altitude? Treat it as a non-factor and tell the players to ignore it? Acknowledge it’s an issue and plan on rotating players more frequently to try to keep them from getting too winded? Arrange for oxygen bottles on the sideline? Something else?

Mahalo and keep up the great work.

  66. z October 17, 2016 11:32 pm

I like Padello. We he is in he just makes plays.

  67. Maddog50 October 18, 2016 4:59 am

Can you see some of the young players i.e. Padello, Pritchard, Okeke, et al having expanded roles in “situational” alignments. Reason being quickness speed and motor-

  68. Losing? October 18, 2016 5:56 am

Naole’s doing a great job but he has been around for 3 yrs. Lempa needs time, only 1 st year. the D had to learn all over again and not really his players. They ‘should make Brown carry a football tied to his upper body.

  69. Maddog50 October 18, 2016 6:42 am

Not a question-AF is a very winnable game once again if the effort and intensity mirror the two MW wins and then some, which they have. AF has beaten Abilene Christian which is 0-7, Georgia State has a losing record, Utah State is down and a marquee win over Navy. 7 players which include 6 starters on D are injured and questionable for this week. Of course this means nothing given the facts we are 16.5 dogs. There is a difference between effort and intensity. When they are combined and applied for 4 quarters this is a very winnable game. Gonna be there so I don’t need slingbox periscope or hangouts thanks goodness. Lets brings this home and get back on track. Go Warriors!!!

  70. Ipu Man October 18, 2016 7:05 am

Up we go into the wild blue yonder, or
    something like that (high altitude).
Let’s have a passing attack and cut
    down sacks. Go Bows 🙂

  71. Boolakanaka October 18, 2016 7:16 am

    Knock knock?

    Oswego!

    Oswego who??

Oswego into the wild blue yonder…..

    Buahahahah, I crack myself up!!

  72. kanak October 18, 2016 7:23 am

We’ve heard it the previous 3 weeks that if DB’s ball security doesn’t improve that changes may occur? Love the spark he’s provided and other team issues outside of him, but his ball security still an issue. What changes can/will be implemented?

  73. Ipu Man October 18, 2016 8:09 am

    Boolakanaka… 🙂

  74. Bryson October 18, 2016 8:47 am

What more can Dru do to work on not fumbling the ball? It seemed like on the play that he fumbled he had the ball tucked and the LB just made a play..

  75. Bryson October 18, 2016 9:02 am

What’s your take on recruits who commit to a school then say they are waiting on so and so to offer?

  76. cocobean October 18, 2016 9:32 am

Maddog50. You put into words – “There is a difference between effort and intensity.” succinctly what I’ve thought about our defense. That you can’t fault anyone on how hard they play but at times the intensity level is not consistent from player to player. A guy like Henderson brings it on every play but you can’t say that about the group as a whole. It’s fun to watch when the whole defense is fired up flying around trying to get a piece of the ball carrier.

  77. cocobean October 18, 2016 10:02 am

I can only recall Brown’s last three fumbles. They all happened when his back was to the defender. Twice the defender caught him from behind and once when he was scrambling and tried to reserve direction turning his back to the defender. If he sees the hit coming he secures the ball tightly or slides his problem seems to be he doesn’t have eyes in the back of his head.(sarcasm)

  78. Inyoface October 18, 2016 10:04 am

Seems like defensive coordinators will be telling the players if Dru is scrambling or nearly sacked, punch out the ball.

  79. (Jesse)James October 18, 2016 10:11 am

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Bryson #74. When I watched the replay of that fumble, it did appear to me as well that Dru had that ball tucked away but Tau caught him from behind and punched the ball out. It didn’t seem to me that he was holding the ball out like the previous 2 fumbles.

Although that turnover was bad, there were numerous other times where balls were dropped, assignments missed, etc. All correctable. UNLV just played a better game that day. Time to move on.

  80. Niko Noga Fan October 18, 2016 10:46 am

In this game, unline the previous two, our defense did not seem ready to go? They weren’t flying around making plays and instead looked unsure or confused. If this is true, any idea what or why?
Go get um at Air Force … then home to a crowd of 30k plus.

  81. Maddog50 October 18, 2016 10:59 am

Referring to effort and intensity……I have yet to see this team overall not give mostly great effort. That is to be applauded. The intensity level is tha added gritty defiant addition that comes from within. This team has the ability to find it and I’m confident they will-Warrior Will!!!!!!
