QB Reilly transferring to Division II team

University of Hawaii quarterback Beau Reilly is transferring to Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Reilly, who is taking final exams this week, his wife and their 14-month-old son will be moving on Thursday. They were celebrated in an emotional church service on Sunday.

“I’m happy for him,” UH head coach Nick Rolovich said. “I think he’s going to get an opportunity to play.”

Reilly initially signed with Colorado State in 2011. But he went on a church mission, then transferred to UH in 2014. He redshirted that year, although he was considered the No. 2 quarterback at the end of that season. He also finished as the No. 2 quarterback in 2015 despite not playing in a game.

Reilly, Ikaika Woolsey, and Aaron Zwahlen were the only scholarship quarterbacks in spring training the past April. In training camp, Reilly was told he would not be in the quarterback rotation. But Rolovich kept Reilly with the top offense as a player/mentor.

“He was a good mentor for the younger quarterbacks,” Rolovich said. “He handled it in a real positive way.”

Zwahlen said Reilly is “a student of the game and a great teacher of the game.” Zwahlen added that Reilly was helpful “on the field and off the field. He taught me a lot about life.”

Slotback Dylan Collie and his wife live in the same apartment complex as the Reilly’s.

“He was one of the greatest teammates simply because he cared enough,” Collie said. “Even though he knew he wasn’t going to play, he still put in every single effort needed to mentally be there. He’s, hands down, one of the smartest guys when it comes to football. He’s got a very high IQ. His ability to be able to help the quarterbacks with just simply reading and understanding defenses, you can’t replace that. He’s going to be a phenomenal football coach one day. I love Beau, and I’m going to miss him like crazy.”

Well stated “Bryson” … Beau Reilly represented the State of Hawaii and The University in a way we can all be proud … I will keep an eye out on him for the ’17 season …
If I’m not mistaken, and someone correct me if I’m wrong, Texas A & M-Kingsville used to be knows as the Texas A & I Javelinas … the first game UH played at Aloha Stadium was against them and again someone correct me if I’m wrong they “killed” us …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

Beau, Aloha and fair sailing to you and your family.

  6. Derek December 12, 2016 10:42 am

People come and people go away. Along the way, they give it their all. All good people that touch this program in some fashion. The Beau Reilleys, and the Corey Neilsens, and others that committed to play at the Univ. of Hawaii that didn’t pan out as far as contributing more on the playing field are nonetheless terrific students and will be successful in life. Wishing them well in their futures.

  7. PONO December 12, 2016 10:56 am

    Good luck to Beau.

Wish the best for QB Reilly. Just remember, a qb named
Brett Farve was cut by his team and went on to be one of
    the greatest qbs ever.

  9. Abunai December 12, 2016 12:10 pm

Speaking of Farve. I wish Tua would stay home and play for the home team like he did. If Farve could do it at Southern Mississippi which is a mid major program he could certainly do that also. I’m not comparing them with talent just staying home and play. If you are good enough you’ll get noticed from NFL scouts. But that’s not going to happen.

  10. SteveM December 12, 2016 12:14 pm

    Best wishes for Beau Reilly!
Good luck and light up the Texas A&M scoreboard with your UH know-how!

Fondest Aloha and deepest Mahalo to Beau Riley. I remember watching his highlight reel before he got here and thinking what a great player he was.

Here’s wishing you and yours the best, Beau – hope we see you kicking okole in the near future! May the road rise to meet you!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
@#4 808 WarriorFan: You are correct. The Javelinas took UH to the wood shed and this was the first home game in the brand new Aloha Stadium! Larry Price was at a lost for words as Texas A&I had been a Div II national champions many times over.

  13. SteveM December 12, 2016 2:17 pm

    RE: #12
Annoddah Dave — I was at that game. There were many speeches on the field before the game and I noticed that everyone exalted the UH team playing in this inaugural game and no one acknowledged Texas A&I for being there except the religious speaker who mentioned them in a prayer. Don’t know if they felt slighted or not, but they played like pros and made their name known that night.

  14. Derek December 12, 2016 2:45 pm

Texas A&I, powerhouse in the lower divisions. Among others, former NFL players Larry Collins, RB and Johnny Barefield, LB. Outstanding triple option QB Richard Ritchie. He was a magician handling the ball. Ah, what times at Honolulu Stadium.

  15. islandman December 12, 2016 2:56 pm

June Jones was at Hawaii as a player in 1973 (Holmes ?) and 74 ( Larry Price), per the internet. I don’t remember him playing at all but the UH website says he lettered in 1974. He transferred to Portland State, NCAA Div II at the time and did very well there in 1975 and 1976.

  16. Brother Mike December 12, 2016 3:08 pm

Beau is a class act. He’ll do well wherever his journey ultimately takes him.

  17. NorthShoreFan December 12, 2016 3:16 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Yes, me and dad was in the stands for that game and it was…murder. My dad was very impressed with Texas A & I. We had a hard time following the ball. Didn’t know who had it! IRRC, the triple option was new to many and it was exciting to see it in motion.

Mahalo Beau and Wishing You much future success!

  18. Haleakala December 12, 2016 3:19 pm

    Best wishes Beau!

    You’ve helped the Warriors.

    Perspective.
    Prayers for Coach Shoji.
    Much Aloha!

  21. Old School Dave December 12, 2016 4:24 pm

LB Rich Ellerson was the first Bow to make a tackle vs Texas A & I in the brand new Aloha Stadium. To Price’s credit, the team did rally to finish 6-5 in 75, including an upset of a then nationally ranked San Jose State team that had the likes of future NFLers Kim Bokamper and Rick Kane. Who can forget the post-game brawl with UOP and the PA Announcer frantically calling for the Kaimuki High band to play the National Anthem. Local High School bands used to make up the half-time shows at UH games back when.

    Best of luck to Beau.

  22. Old School Dave December 12, 2016 4:32 pm

Interesting factoid: Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was a GA on that 75 UOP team that brawled with UH. Carroll was an All-PCAA safety for the Tigers before that. Carroll also tried out for the WFL Hawaiians, but was cut.

  23. Old School Dave December 12, 2016 4:34 pm

Best wishes and a full recovery for Coach Shoji.

  24. DaveLetterMan December 12, 2016 5:15 pm

Prayers and well wishes for Coach Shoji.

  25. bowwar December 12, 2016 5:45 pm

Old School Dave…I was there at the UOP game and played for the UH Band…It was the UH band that was asked to play the National Anthem…The whole problem started before the game with the dispute between Chester Caddis (sp?), the UOP coach and Price…They definitely didn’t like each other. Actually, we the brawl started, several band members started to leave their seats to join the fray, before Dr. Lum told us to sit down and play the National Anthem…What a scene…Not sure, but it may have been the game that Blane Gaison broke his jaw…Lots of fights during the Price years….

  26. bowwar December 12, 2016 5:48 pm

Also remember the Rutgers game when their cheer leaders called out some of the endzone fans and out popped out a BIG Poly with blood in his eyes. Fortunately, former chief Keala was there along with others to prevent the guy from grabbing that cheerleader.

  27. wafan December 12, 2016 7:28 pm

    Aloha to Beau.

Much aloha to Coach Shoji. Prayers for a rapid and complete healing.

I was the first game . . . working the North Endzone tunnel.

    Congratulations to Amela! Yahoo!!!

Praying the cancer was diagnosed early, and that surgery/treatment will be 100 percent effective. He may not look the part, but I’m told Dave is a very competitve person. He’ll beat this with the support of family and friends. Stay strong, coach.

And aloha and mahalo to Beau and his family.

  29. NorthShoreFan December 12, 2016 8:17 pm

Healing Energy to Coach Shoji. One thing we don’t need to ask of him is to fight on. Coach is a fighter and tough competitor!

  30. winning December 12, 2016 8:18 pm

We got Hula WHooped in that one as the Hula T went down, which eventually sacked Coach Price down the road. Went to the Quarterback Club luncheon at the “Flamingo Chuckwagon” where LP lashed out at everyone for getting sacked as coach. Not a peep was heard in the room.

  31. cappie the dog December 12, 2016 8:49 pm

    Go Javelinas!

  32. 3-Prong December 12, 2016 8:53 pm

    …prayers for Coach Shoji.

In the words of Coach McMackin, you have to “Fight Like A Mother!”

  33. Inyoface December 12, 2016 9:35 pm

Good to see Hawaii in a bowl game after all these years that will get recognition from the casual fan and can build for next year.

  34. Old School Dave December 13, 2016 5:48 am

Bowwar: Thanks. Chester Caddas, the UOP coach was the one who said disparaging remarks about the UH program a couple of years earlier during the 73 season (?) after they beat UH, resulting in Casey Ortiz and Allen Brown quitting the team after that game. I think that Price’s teams also beat UOP at their house in 74. Caddas also had continued bachi at Aloha Stadium as the interim HC for Colorado State in 81 (after their coach got fired) when UH beat them something like 59-14.

  35. cappie the dog December 13, 2016 6:39 am

When I was a child, my uncle would give my father and I tickets to all the games featuring PCAA opponents. Automatic victories, right?

I remember a 9-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton.

    That was scary.

I haven’t thought about that acronym in years.

It only now occurs to me that when George Mason and Butler were on the verge of winning, what I thought, would be the first basketball title for a mid-major, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas already accomplished that feat.

I never thought of UNLV as a mid-major. I don’t think the term mid-major was really in vogue during the late-eighties and early-nineties.

  36. cappie the dog December 13, 2016 6:42 am

We’re all behind you, Coach Shoji.

  37. 808warriorfan December 13, 2016 7:12 am

Maybe Beau Reilly can return someday as a Grad Assistant after his playing days are over …..

A complete and speedy recovery for Coach Shoji … we’re all pulling for you

Someone posted that in the 70’s, our team had gold helmets–how about we return that tradition; think it would look awesome; and separate us from the other teams as “special”.

Is Nakoa & Rolo still doing a fund raising for new helmets; I haven’t heard a word about this.

  44. Andrew December 13, 2016 9:15 am

    43.

Sorry but it’s not so special when it’s the tradition of one of the most storied programs in the country, Notre Dame
