Power move: Aiea lineman set to join Warriors

Offensive lineman Ramsey Aviu’s project graduation was this: Lift weights.

Aviu, whose Aiea High graduation ceremony was a week ago, resumed training shortly after that as he prepared to join the Warriors this summer as a preferred walk-on.

Aviu, who is 6 feet 2 and 295 pounds, is capable of bench pressing 225 pounds 24 times.

At the Blue-Grey All-America regional combine in 2015, Aviu had the top weightlifting performance, benching 185 pounds 41 times. That mark surpassed efforts by Sean Auwae, a Kapolei High graduate heading to Vanderbilt, and Saint Louis’ Nate Herbig, who signed with Stanford.

Aviu also appeared to be mainland-bound when he agreed to a financial-aid package with Division II Minnesota-Crookston in February. But the pull of the islands, as well as UH’s Division I affiliation, led to Aviu’s decision to instead join the Warriors.

“I thought it was a good choice,” Aviu said. “I like their football program. I like being home in Hawaii, with the weather and the environment. And the family can see me (play), also.”

Aviu played tackle as an Aiea junior before moving to center in 2015. “I really loved that (move),” said Aviu, who is comfortable calling plays.

Aiea’s spread offense has many blocking elements similar to UH’s hybrid attack.

Aviu projects to compete at center or guard at UH.

In the meantime, Aviu is enjoying his favorite pastime.

“I’d say lifting is my biggest hobby,” Aviu said.

    Happy Memorial Day everyone.
Let us all remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Freedom!
For all those in our Military and Veterans, Thank You for your service!

Reading the link to potential recruits in Austrailia in yesterday’s post has me getting excited for the 1st UH Football game under Nick Rolovich in Austrailia.
I’ll be there in person to cheer on our Rainbow Warriors! Go Bows!

I used to live in Kapahulu in the early 1980s.
Walter’s Market was our version of 7-Eleven back in the day.
I remember there was a game room in the area where Safeway is now. I saw a bunch of people playing a poker machine. A couple days later, the place was raided, and the cops carried away the machines.
    Ah, memories.
OK, why the heck did I start drifting after seeing “Kapahulu”?

    Then again, you are ST.

  7. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2016 9:54 am

    OK, focus, focus.
There’s a lot of physical talent in Australia. But it might take some time to fully develop the football skills. The good thing is the way the Earth spins, and Australia’s summers are our winters. That enables prospects to join a semester earlier than American counterparts.

  9. warriorsanddolphins May 30, 2016 9:56 am

With good size and strength and eligibility, i wonder why he wasnt recruited by division one schools?

  10. Kapahulu May 30, 2016 9:57 am

    I remember Walter’s Market.
In later years, I think it became a Pizza Hut.
In the same building upsatairs back in the 60’s, used to have a slot car race track where we would have races. Those were some fun times.

  11. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2016 9:58 am

    Kapahulu:
How come Walter’s wasn’t owned by a guy named Walter?

  12. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2016 10:01 am

    Warriorsanddolphins:
    Not sure why, either.
But you look at a guy like Arona Amosa, who walked on at UH after not receiving D-1 offers. Maybe recruiters look for taller guys? But with the swarm of teams recruiting in Hawaii, it’s nice for UH to find walk-on talent.

Kapahulu back in the old days had a lot of Bakeries.

    Everyone knows about Leonard’s Bakery.

There were some others such as Snowflake Bakery in the area that had Sam Choy’s Diamond Head Restaurant and Hee Hing Chop Suey.
Snowflake Bakery moved to Aiea and became The Holsum Baking Company.

About a block Mauka and Diamond Head of Walter’s Market was Bill’s Bakery.

I think there may have also been another Bakery but I can’t remember the name.

Mahalos to all who served and are serving to protect our great nation.
    NSF, thanks!

How could I forget the biggest Bakery in Kapahulu was Love’s Bakery in the location that now has Kapahulu Safeway.

The Bakery smells very early in the morning would put a smile on your face.

I remember touring Love’s Bakery in Kapahulu during Grade School.
    That was impressive.

Cheeeeehuuuu– Another, in a long line of strong Aiea players. As I love to dip back into history, the strongest Aiea guys I know (and that’s saying a lot, guess it goes back to Pat Richardson to the Fonotis, Gaylord Kuamoo, Chucky Kaahanui, Brandon Rodd…etc) were the Aleaga boys, all except Ink (Pac 5, Udub, Saints) played for Aiea.

Anywho, Eddie and Vic, in their 40s were still lifting 600+, yes legit 600+, in the bench, now that is some strong soles!!!!!

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid May 30, 2016 11:13 am

    Happy Memorial Day, all!

    Welcome to the Warriors, Ramsey!

Boola – I can still lift 600 pounds – but I’d have to hire 6 guys to do it! 😆

  18. bg May 30, 2016 12:43 pm

Wishes for a memorable day to all. Read in the paper this morning where someone hoped this day would not be used to glorify war. I remember thinking that it is not a problem with veterans. I believe it would be very difficult to find a vet who does not hope that Memorial Day is day for remembering the devastation, pain, hardships, and tears that war carries in its backpack. Unfortunately, too often it takes someone, military or civilian, who has experienced war’s offerings to truly want for the end to mankind’s worst experiences.

Off the philosophical soapbox and back to the blog… Welcome Ramsey Aviu! You are yet another candle of hope for the Warrior ohana. Yet another indication that the program is moving in the right direction when student-athletes like you choose to stay and defend the Rock. Congratulations Coach Rolo and your hard charging staff.

  19. Na Alii Pride May 30, 2016 12:52 pm

Boola – what year you grad? The ’82 team Na Alii team was the best I remember. Link, Olim, Sesepasara, Chucky, Mayo, Kaaukai, Kelii Moore. Memories!

DaveLetterMan…the Thanks go to you for supporting our Warriors!

    bg…well said!

Today and everyday we really need to reflect on the cost our nation pays for involvement in conflicts around the globe. What we hold dear is not free and there are many who had paid the bill for everything we have. Today we say a prayer and Thank them.

Kapahulu — thanks. Looks like you, A-House, and Warrior Dave are on the same flights and hotel.

Did you know your cousin will be cruising to Sydney from Honolulu a month later? The game is about 6 weeks before the mass cruise ship migrations for the down under spring/summer. 🙁

  27. ALLAN May 30, 2016 2:55 pm

IN 1967, MY TWIN 5-YR OLDS HAD ALWAYS HAD THE SNIFFLES, SO I WAS ALWAYS RUNNING OUT OF THE LARGE BOXES OF KLEENEX. IN THOSE DAYS, NOBODY BOUGHT STUFF IN LARGE QUANTITIES LIKE NOWADAYS.

ONE DAY, I SAW THAT REXALL DRUGSTORE, WHERE ZIPPY’S KAPAHULU IS NOW, WAS HAVING A SALE ON KLEENEX 400’s (THE LARGE BOX), 5 FOR $1.00, SO I WENT THERE AND SAW TWO CASES ON THE FLOOR THAT THEY HADN’T OPENED TO SET UP THEIR DISPLAY YET.

I BOUGHT ONE CASE OF ABOUT 48, AND THEY THOUGHT I WAS NUTS.

  28. Boolakanaka May 30, 2016 3:31 pm

Na Ali’i Pride…82 was loaded, but I gotta say, actually 81 was most flat out talented. You had David Fonot and Gaylord Kuamoo ( although he bagged to Radford his senior year) they both were two year starters at tackle at ASU and USC. Kosi started at Cal-Davis at center. Then I think both Herring and Eddie Aleaga also played D1. Big Bens brother older brother, Michael, could have gone to SC too, he was tearing it up at Pasadena CC, (I played against him) but he didn’t have the grades. You also had Joe Sniffemn, another big guy and Mervin Wong, who I think if he had stayed at QB would have been all west OIA, instead he transferred to Radford with Gaylord.

  29. z May 30, 2016 3:35 pm

Nice could use as a pohaku on the dline.

  30. 3-Prong May 30, 2016 3:40 pm

  33. Paniolo May 30, 2016 6:25 pm

Yup Cappie, I remember both located on Waialae Ave. Went to Walrich Drugs on the corner of Waialae & Koko Head Ave to buy all kind of snacks, candies and local kine stuff too. You’re dating me way back to the past. Fond memories of both.

  39. oldtimer808 May 30, 2016 11:52 pm

I submit this testimonial that the 1964 and 1965 Aiea Aliis before was correctly changed to the Na Alii were outstanding teams that came in at 8 wins and 1 lost second only to Kailua back in the day.

Good morning the Piggly Wiggly was not in Kapahulu but on Kalakaua in Waikiki. There was another Piggly Wiggly in Halawa in a wooden building and was torn down to make way for the freeway as lower Halawa housing was torn down.

  51. cappie the dog May 31, 2016 7:58 am

    Willie-

Walrich Drugs is where I started my baseball card collection. I remember buying 1981 Fleer Baseball Cards. I liked Fleer better than Topps because the back displayed minor league statistics. ‘Til this day, I can still recite Sid Fernandez’s minor league numbers. Man, he should have had a better career. I know he led the National League twice in Lowest Batting Average Allowed. Something like .217. Fifteen pounds lighter: Hall of Fame.

  52. tom May 31, 2016 9:17 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Old Age – but I think there was a Piggly Wiggly on Beretania Street near Makiki Street.

  53. snowmantoo May 31, 2016 9:31 am

You’re right, Tom, there was. My grandmother use to buy her Christmas trees there for her house on Pensecola St. That was a few weekends ago!

  54. A-House May 31, 2016 9:58 am

    for Warrior Dave and Maddog50:

“the New Year’s eve we did the town” [ Allstate sugar Bowl 2008 ]

“the day we tore the goal posts down” [ Michigan 2016 ]

“we will have these moments to remember”

“the quiet walks” [ leaving Aloha Stadium in 2015 ]

“the noisey fun” [ UH tailgate at Ohio State ]

    yes, many moments to remember!
