Paterson promoted

Being a compliance officer is under-appreciated work.

UH showed its appreciation recently, promoting Amanda Paterson to assistant athletic director. AD David Matlin confirmed the move.

Paterson was born in Australia but raised in the UH system, first joining as a Rainbow Wahine soccer goalie and then ascending from student worker to compliance worker through years of hard work.

She will continue to oversee the compliance department.

Did Matlin create a “new” assistant athletic director’s position? vacant position now filled? on an organizational chart, where does she fit?

Who applied or was it strictly “in-house” hire?

Over seeing compliance does not translate to being “hands ‘n feet” into the nitty critty of compliance – are they not short handed in Compliance?

I do not know what he extra expense will be, but with a plus $4 million short fall for 2015-16 why create an extra expense? perhaps savings from one AD leaving will ease the blow to pony up the dulahs for Amanda?

BTW, who set the $$$ limit of $1.4 mil for hiring of football coaches? chancellor” BOR?

can that 3 mil be taken from those departments that do not profit but lose more $$$ than the athletic department..This might be wrong but…maybe like a loan the athletic department can repay that department after this successful season of wins
BOARD OF REGENTS TO ADJUST BUDGETS FOR ALL DEPARTMENTS..Opening available funds for Athletics
Going to GOV won’t do anything..he will only say it’s not his problem

  32. Frannyk December 21, 2015 3:14 pm

  33. H-Man December 21, 2015 3:47 pm

Ige just confirmed he does not support UH Athletics. I am totally baffled that Ige expects UH Athletics to be self-sustaining financially when ocean sports like boating has the full support of the state. Millions are spent on the operation and maintenance of the state’s many boat launches, piers, harbors, etc. , as well as the state park system. When was the last time users had to pay a fee in order that these facilities must be self-sustaining financially? Never. We need a governor like the former and late John A. Burns that really supported the University of Hawaii, both its academic and athletic endeavors. Somewhere along the way, our legislators have lost sight of the dream that Governor Burns envisioned for the University.

  34. AdmrVT December 21, 2015 3:55 pm

How many “departments” that offer these degrees are “self-sustaining” too? If it call comes down to the bottom line, there is a lot of stuff we can cut and downsize.

    http://www.kaleo.org/news/bill-aims-to-abolish-over-undergraduate-programs-at-uh/article_24b79b1e-ac28-11e4-b25f-f77ef65cea1b.html

Legislation was introduced on Jan. 26 to eliminate undergraduate-degree programs that graduate less than 10 students per year at the University of Hawai‘i.

If passed, HB555, introduced by Rep. Isaac Choy, could abolish approximately 33 undergraduate-degree programs — including 11 secondary education programs and four language programs.
“Because the university needs a lot of money, we need to economize,” Choy said. “Having these low-demand majors is costing money.”
Robert J. Littman, classics department chair in the department of Languages and Literature of Europe and Americas, said Choy’s bill would leave the university without accreditation. Within Littman’s department, all but one program would be abolished.

“Should a bill like this pass, it would clearly endanger the accreditation of the university,” Littman said. “Clearly, you cannot run an accredited university without these programs: without French, without German, without Russian, without classics and a whole host of other programs within the university.”

Choy, chairman of the state House committee on higher education, said it is the responsibility of university administration and the Board of Regents to determine what programs to keep and how many graduates are needed to keep or end a program.

Remove Littman like we did Chow. First things first right. Now remove members of the BOR. Elect members in favor of a newly constructed law. Is this America or the United Nations?

Our deposit is in with Panda Travel. Looking forward to seeing you again. Hope A House and his ohana, Mad Dog 50 and Chawan Cut decide to go too!

Like you said, I’m going to miss experiencing the Big House but we had such good memories of Sydney, it’s time to go back.

  44. Warrior Dave December 21, 2015 7:52 pm

Ige does not support UH being autonomous. It’s politics, especially when he said he would allow UH to go back under Legislature control in a minute.

UH Administration will continue to fund athletics “shortfall” because they know full well that the intercepting income from parking, signage, etc. into the general fund for other projects like the anicer Center. Same with funds for needed repairs. Money being spent elsewhere. Follow the money.

  45. 3-Prong December 21, 2015 8:20 pm

  46. 3-Prong December 21, 2015 8:27 pm

Warrior Dave, I don’t know what is worse, leaving decision making in Upper Campus’ hands or turning it back to the Governor’s Office and the likes of Mr “Line Item”Ige. (Apologies to all, I admit to voting for him). I hope uou are right Dave, about them continuing to fund shortfalls.

  47. cavewarrior December 21, 2015 9:51 pm

Choy wants to create a LAW to manage which UH degrees are offered! Insane! Choy and Leg and Gov need to stay away from micro managing UH. Gov can install a BOR group that supports his governance approach.

  48. Warrior Dave December 21, 2015 9:56 pm

3-Prong, it’ll be a great trip. The locals are so nice and the food is very good. Huge chinese population so get some great Chinese food if that’s your thing.

  55. cappie the dog December 22, 2015 8:03 am

Wouldn’t you rather have the post-season ban over and done with, Cocobean?

    Why next season?

So if Hawaii didn’t fire Arnold, Akana, and Benjy Taylor, we’d have penalties levied against us comparable to Southern Methodist?

    I did not expect a post-season ban.

Mark my words: Say goodbye to Issac Fleming.

If Bobbitt and Valdez have a redshirt year, I would use it next season.

Since Hawaii isn’t going anywhere, Coach Ganot should go the Dan Monson route and play a crazy non-conference schedule.

First world problem: My basketball team is on probation.

But I don’t live in Syria, so this sucks.

  56. kev-1 December 22, 2015 8:06 am

The sanctions seem pretty harsh considering the severity, or lack there of, of the violations. I think what we have here is a case of the NCAA making an example of a small school while they turn their heads away from the big boys.

  57. kev-1 December 22, 2015 8:09 am

It is kind of ironic to be discussing sanctions as a result of noncompliance of NCAA policies on the blog entry for the promotion of the compliance officer.

  58. kev-1 December 22, 2015 8:10 am

55 … yeah, I don’t understand the delayed postseason ban either.
