Paredes named honorary captain

One of the most memorable UH plays was in 2010 when linebacker Corey Paredes chased down Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick to force a fumble and touchback.

Here’s the video: Paredes stops Kaepernick

UH head coach Nick Rolovich named Paredes as honorary captain for tomorrow’s game against Nevada.

“It was an honor when Rolo called me,” Paredes told the Warrior Beat. “I’m flattered.”

In that game, Paredes forced Kaepernick to lose two fumbles. Despite Kaepernick’s tall build and long strides, Paredes said, “You don’t really look at size when you’re on the field. You just keep going.”

Paredes was a defensive captain as a junior in 2010 and senior in 2011. He said he never made the decision on the coin toss. If asked to do it for this game, Paredes laughed and said, “I’m definitely not lucky, but I was told ‘tails never fails.'”

Paredes works for Par Hawaii Refinery, where he is used for welding, pipe fitting, boilermaking and operating a crane.

Paredes and his wife Liz have two daughters, ages 5 and 3.

Memorable play that saved the day!
    Go Warriors!

    Paredes is a perfect choice.

    GO BOWS!

Corey Paredes never gave up on any play, he had the heart of a champion. A good player to recognize.

  4. (Jesse)James September 30, 2016 8:14 am

Good morning Tsaikos….Cool to hear about Corey….

    Don’t forget about the T-gate tomorrow….we start around 9 a.m.

  5. (Jesse)James September 30, 2016 8:24 am

Yep…I remember that play. Kap was trying to Hollywood the touchdown and Corey made him pay…MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  6. NotNasti September 30, 2016 8:44 am

ST: Thanks for the link to the video. Noticed that Dick Tomey was doing the color commentary, and called the fumble and said with his “old eyes,” he thought the play should be reviewed. The play occurred on the opposite side of the press box, so his “old eyes” are probably old “eagle eyes.” He was a good coach, and a good color man too.

Great way to fire up the Defense. Be like Corey!

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    WHOOP DA WOOFIES!!

  8. Da Punchbowl Kid September 30, 2016 8:56 am

Noticed that the Leahey and Leahey show is on hiatus until January. UH football is not the same without their weekly comment.

    Hurry back, Pops and Kanoa!

  9. islandman September 30, 2016 9:10 am

Nevada hasn’t fumbled this season yet and has thrown only one INT.

  10. bowwar September 30, 2016 9:16 am

Corey is a typical Castle player…Small, but with a huge heart. I was at the game and Kapernick was trying to “showboat” into the end zone, but Corey didn’t give up and slapped the ball away…One of my most memorable Warrior moments. See everyone tomorrow at the game.

  11. haka September 30, 2016 9:20 am

Islandman, nice bachi! Factually subtle yet so smoooooth. 🙂

  12. NorthShoreFan September 30, 2016 9:48 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Yes, one of the memorable plays by a Warrior. Didn’t give up and changed the outcome of the game. Something we need to see more of!
To think he did this to CK back then. What a story to tell his kids and grand kids!
Like an old sage once stated…Make memories, Make memories!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  13. NorthShoreFan September 30, 2016 9:49 am

I’m thinking Corey will address the team too.

    GIVE EM HELL COREY!

  14. NorthShoreFan September 30, 2016 9:54 am

After further review, the ball carrier lost the ball before crossing the goal line. The ball went out of bounds in the end zone for a touch back. First down…. Hawaii!..something like dat?

That was the “Little General”, Ault?

  15. NorthShoreFan September 30, 2016 9:55 am

I think a famous announcer call CK a “freak of nature”…lanky, tall, has a great arm, can run like heck and likes to kneel a lot now days.

I guess I’m not using the correct Google search words.

Can I purchase individual football tickets at the Stan Sheriff Center?

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12/university-of-kansas/ku-basketball-photos-videos/article104314006.html To recognize today as the first day of college basketball practice thought I would share something I found on the basketball players dorm at Kansas U. The Jayhawks are at the lead for doing something like this but it’s good to see how the other half lives. I always thought the NCAA has a policy against athletes only dorms but that must have changed. It’s pretty ridiculous.

    Nevada 48 – 38 UH

  19. HawaiiMongoose September 30, 2016 1:23 pm

I look at that play as having saved UH football. It enabled the Warriors to upset Nevada, which in turn resulted in UH winning a co-share of the WAC championship and finishing the season ranked in the BCS top 25 (at 24th). Those accomplishments made the program attractive enough to land an MWC invitation as the WAC was collapsing. Without that invitation UH could have ended up like Idaho and New Mexico State, without a conference home and contemplating a drop down to the FCS level or complete elimination of football.

    Thank you Corey Paredes!

#6 – Times added so much with his experiences and anecdotes. My favorite was about the Nebraska game in 1982, where he said Remington and Stienkhuler were scratching at Nikos eyes so much that at the end of the game his face was bloody with scratches and he could barely see out of his eyes.

  21. Akamai Okole September 30, 2016 2:27 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    *burp*

    😳

  22. Akamai Okole September 30, 2016 2:28 pm

Quite apropos for Mr. Paredes to be brought back into the fold this weekend.

Never give up on a play…

Never give up on a game…

Never give up on your team…

  23. Akamai Okole September 30, 2016 2:41 pm

BTW, anyone else notice that the NPF (noise per fan) level was way better on the video?

Anyone else notice the size of the “beverage” cups? 🙄

  24. Akamai Okole September 30, 2016 2:49 pm

    You wen look, eh? 😆

  25. Maddog50 September 30, 2016 3:20 pm

Turning the corner for good tomorrow. Purdue which is well down the list in the Big 10 should have swamped Nevada big time-gotta get on them early and stay on them. Realize I’m in the minority but the defense can be a whole lot better with proper alignment and reading the play properly to take proper pursuit Angles. So if I’m predicting Warriors by 10

  26. Manoa Mist September 30, 2016 3:33 pm

Always thought that play epitomized UH football and Hawaii people in general. You might be up against someone bigger and faster, someone from the “great continent,” but never give up, hustle and play to the whistle. That play gave UH a share of the conference title if I remember correctly, under Mack. Cory: you one of our family’s UH heroes bro.

  27. Buffoman September 30, 2016 4:15 pm

In all the years of watching UH, I found it enjoyable watching Niko and Al Noga play. I would probably be safe to assume that opponents were aware and probably afraid of their restlessness pursuits. They never seemed to “take a play off”. Anther guy was John Woodcock. I would like to see that kind of “controlled mayhem” return to our defense.

  32. Inyoface September 30, 2016 6:15 pm

Chris Petersen might do well in the NFL.

  33. 808warriorfan September 30, 2016 6:25 pm

One thing I would like to say about Corey Paredes … he was too small to play D1 football … no one else (D1 schools if I’m not mistaken) gave him a chance except UH. He is the epitome of … H-E-A-R-T … and how bad you want it … I sure hope he’s able to give the team a speech before the game …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS

  34. eMpTy September 30, 2016 6:34 pm

ST. What happened to Cindy Luis? Is she one of the casualties you were talking about? She hasn’t been on the blog for a couple of days.

    BOOLAKANAKA #29

Sorry I missed the lunch. Hawaiian Tel was wiring out condo today with fiber optic cable just in time to switch over to Hawaiian Tel’s system – and not letting me watch the UH-Fullerton game – which is on Oceanic! 🙁

  37. Former UH Athlete September 30, 2016 10:34 pm

Welcome Washington to the elite group of FBS teams. They are legit.

Stanford moves to the group of 1-loss teams that can make the playoff if they win out.

  38. Former UH Athlete September 30, 2016 10:38 pm

When Chris Peterson was blasting the WAC/MW year after year, I always wondered how he’d do at a power 5 school with power 5 resources.

Well that question has been answered.

  39. LizKauai October 1, 2016 6:18 am

Found my tee from the 2010 game. Gonna wear it with pride today!
Good to hear about Corey Peredes! – let his spirit and work ethic infuse our team today!
    Go, Rainbow Warriors!

  40. seewhy October 1, 2016 6:26 am

    Go Bows!

Not surprised to read JGW will have his hand in the dirt tonite. Smart move!!!

  42. 3-Prong October 1, 2016 8:11 am

Something comforting about watching Paul Johnsons GT option offense…. Memories.

    Go Bows, beat da Pack.

  43. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2016 9:04 am

Not that it means much, but apparently Vegas thinks Dru Brown is worth a couple points vs the spread.

Early line was UH +6, but following DB being named starter, the line went to +3.5 to +4.

  44. A-House October 1, 2016 9:05 am

my honor to meet Boolakanaka at the cattle call yesterday!

good to see old friends — especially DPK as he no cum tailgate anymore!

  45. A-House October 1, 2016 9:08 am

BTW, anyone in the know know what’s holding back AZ from moving into # 2 or # 1 QB?

realize everyone has their limitations and capabilities — hoping the latter is stronger

perhaps, his feet are not as quick as a HS senior or just in the “dog house” — if Rolo not going use him, let him go to another program where he can play.

  46. AllG October 1, 2016 9:09 am

So glad to see Butler at starting safety. Gives us way more speed at the position. Going back to the Spring game thought he was one of the few play makers. Packer gave good effort but is way too slow and was a huge liability in coverage.

  47. NorthShoreFan October 1, 2016 9:22 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
    Smell da smoke..t-gate time!
Looks like the newbies are about ready to do their thang! Vets got to know, perform or keep the seats warm. Seems to me Coach Rolo got his plan in place. It’s your job to lose and some did lose it.
Going to be a tough game. WolfPack will challenge. Defend the outside. Punish receivers.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  48. Inyoface October 1, 2016 9:55 am

#44 How can he be #1? That makes no sense.
