Norm Chow fired

Norm Chow was “relieved of his duties” as head coach today, athletic director David Matlin announced today.

Chris Naeole will serve as interim head coach. Naeole, who coaches the offensive line, was promoted to associate head coach this past summer.

Mahalo Coach Chow for all your efforts. Please take care of your health and family.

  2. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 11:54 am

Thanks for your efforts, Coach Chow. Best of luck to Coach Naeole. They still have 4 games remaining and need to regroup.

  3. Bryson November 1, 2015 11:55 am

Okay now that Chow is gone let’s hope the UH makes a quick hire for recruiting sake…I think it would be great for recruits to know who’s coming in..Hopefully we will see a R-n-S or Spread Type offense that puts points on the board

  4. Bigwave96744 November 1, 2015 11:55 am

I can see this team going 4-0 to close the season.

  5. kev-1 November 1, 2015 11:55 am

Exhale … as desired and expected as this s day was, let’s be respectful of the situation.

The rest of the season is all about pride.

  6. Bigwave96744 November 1, 2015 11:56 am

I can also see other players getting more PT, ie Ewaliko

  7. J-FORCE November 1, 2015 11:56 am

Still bleed green and lets move on.

    Go Warriors!!

  8. Pete Jek November 1, 2015 11:58 am

Sometimes in life, we try and fail. Norm put his best foot forward and simply came up wanting. As a fan, I appreciate his efforts and wish him luck on the next chapter of his coaching career — or retirement.

Naeole and Gouveia are the only interim coaches that i think the players can rally around. I expect the team to play with pride the remainder of the season.

What I am not optimistic about is that the selection of the next head coach will be timely and to the fans’ liking. I hope the UH administration proves myself and the fans wrong — for once.

  9. Bryson November 1, 2015 12:00 pm

I guess we’ll really see who is calling plays offensively as well…should be an interesting last 4 games

  10. azwarrior22 November 1, 2015 12:04 pm

All right, then…a new beginning that is long overdue.

  11. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 12:04 pm

Let AD Dave Matlin handle the selection process and make the hire. Time is precious with recruiting. There will likely be 2 holdover coaches who will be on the new staff for some sense of continuity – Naeole, Eliminian, Gouveia? New coaches do like to bring in their “own” people, too, though. Locals need to understand this and not get all huhu if a particular former coach is not hired.

  12. Bryson November 1, 2015 12:08 pm

I have a feeling JJ will be the guy based on his past history of turning the program around and leading us to the highest Heights the program has ever seen..add to that his history with the Hawaii Bowl..I can see it happening I just hope this time around he realizes how important recruiting is…

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid November 1, 2015 12:09 pm

To everything, there is a season…

Mahalo to Coach Chow, best of luck to him and his ‘ohana. His years in Hawai’i will be just part of an extraordinary narrative for a football coach, mentor, leader and family man. He may not be the UH coach as of today, but tomorrow he will still be Norm Chow.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  14. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 12:12 pm

UH needs a young and experienced head coach with current success and a winning record. There are many to choose from at the FCS (D-IAA) level who would be interested in UH and the challenges. The new coach has to be fanatical about recruiting. They also need to increase the salaries of the coordinators and assistants in order to attract quality coaches who are good teachers.

  15. Come on, Man! November 1, 2015 12:13 pm

“There will likely be 2 holdover coaches who will be on the new staff for some sense of continuity – Naeole, Eliminian, Gouveia? ”

i would be surprised if any of them are retained. A new coach is gonna bring in his own people. I’m sure everyone on the staff is updating their resumes and sending them out.

  16. Anykine guy November 1, 2015 12:14 pm

    Mahalo Coach Chow

As far as recruiting, did we just lose Timoteo, and Milton? I surely hope not, keeping homegrown talent is what we need.

  17. kulawarrior November 1, 2015 12:14 pm

The cupboard is definitely not bare, but current recruiting has to be kept in the forefront moving ahead.
I’m on the side of new, young, proven energy being brought in.
As stated by many, that will require freeing up some money.
    That being said….
I would also be very excited by June Jones (3-year contract) as HC, with Nick Rolovich as OC / Head-Coach-in-Waiting.
Of course, would need an excellent, experienced DC with this group.

  18. Bugaz November 1, 2015 12:15 pm

Best of luck to whomever gets the privilege of choosing the next Warrior football head coach. I hope you all choose right…and hopefully there is a good pool of right applicants.

  19. Manoa Mist November 1, 2015 12:15 pm

Very well said thoughts on Chow in your last blog Stephen. I ain’t gonna kick a guy when he’s down. There is no try, only do. And there is no shame in failing. only shame in not trying. Norm Chow tried his best.
I’m just glad UH did something. The team had quit. And you couldn’t blame them really. Chow should have been let go last year. It’s like keeping a car you know is having one thing after the other go wrong with it. Fix one thing and another thing breaks. At some point you gotta buy new one.

  20. jmy November 1, 2015 12:18 pm

    18. Very well said!

  21. Pete Jek November 1, 2015 12:19 pm

We all appreciate what June Jones did for the program but it would be a mistake to hire him again. The game has changed since his tenure here and the run-and-shoot is no longer as advantageous as the past.

UH, the legislature, the fans — the whole State of Hawaii, really — need to put our money where our mouth is. We will NEVER get a quality head coach unless we substantially increase the salary to, at minimum, be on par with other mid majors. If we want to be big time, we have to spend big time. Period — no if’s, and’s, or but’s.

    We shall see…

  22. Dano November 1, 2015 12:20 pm

if rolo is hired, then elimimian will get to stay.

  23. oldtimer808 November 1, 2015 12:21 pm

#11 Old School Dave…I totally agree with you that AD Matlin should choose the new head coach. Having a committee to make the decision as in the past with non-football committee members is not the way to go. We need our AD to be decisive. JJ loves Hawaii and has recharged and waiting in the wings. JJ missed Hawaii while in Texas.

  24. 3-Prong November 1, 2015 12:26 pm

Mahalo and Aloha to Coach Chow. You always handled yourself with class and dignity.

  25. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 12:26 pm

    Hallelujah!! Norm is gone!!

But putting Naeole in charge might be the worst possible choice out of all the current coaches if the school actually cares to win games that are left on the schedule. Same coach that almost quit a bunch of times on the team. His coaching experience was a voluntary coach at iolani. Our o line has been not very good. He doesn’t embrace recruiting. Oh well. Start the hiring process for next HC.

    Brady Hoke!

  26. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 12:29 pm

    21. Knowing Matlin gave Ganot a chance when he probably wasn’t the best candidate, I def see Rolo being on top of his list at a cheaper price. I wouldn’t go that route but it seems likely. In that scenario, I do agree Abe would be kept and that would be excellent. Abe is going to be a good coach. Only current coach I know of hitting the recruiting scene hard even though it was likely chow was going to be fired at some point

  27. Tempmanoa November 1, 2015 12:32 pm

I opposed the selection of Chow before it was announced, then I supported him as a good choice, but that changed. I have been critical, but it is always tough to see a guy taken out of a job he obviously wanted. This was just a bad match for us and for him. All the best to him.

  28. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 12:32 pm

    16. The cupboard is bare. We got destroyed by Air Force back ups running simple dive up the middle over and over. Our WRs are bad. New coach is going to have to hit big on recruits right away. We have no D line besides KT who will be a senior. We have no Qbs being developed besides Zwahlen because we went the transfer route every year and failed to recruit high school Qbs.

  29. Makai November 1, 2015 12:34 pm

Now it’s going to be fun listening to rumors of who’s going to be the next head coach. JJ, Babers, Norwood, Miano, Jasper, Hoke, Ulbrich, Rolovich? Let the rumor mill begin!

  30. Akamai Okole November 1, 2015 12:34 pm

I fully expect everyone who posted here (or anywhere, FTM) that the Former HC was the problem to now buy a ticket to watch the next home game.

    Everyone….All together….

June Jones, June Jones, June Jones, June Jones, June Jones.

I am a betting man…and I bet you any much June Jones will be our new HC.

He may have baggage or rumors about him…but hey, what successful person doesn’t?

He is a proven winner….He lives in Hawaii….He wants to coach Hawaii…He, I am sure, knows that he can’t pass on every down…He knows Hawaii…He has a gimmick system…which is what we need as we can’t win straight up….Only Von Appen and now Chow couldn’t figure that out.

    June Jones….June Jones….June Jones.

Matlin get it done…and heal our wounds now.

  33. isles November 1, 2015 12:41 pm

let the lesson be learned if not relearned, dont be too soft on your guys. men need to be treated fierce and if you dont treat them fierce, you are not treating them as men.

  34. Akamai Okole November 1, 2015 12:46 pm

He, I am sure, knows that he can’t pass on every down…

Wait…which June Jones you talking about? 😆

  35. kvlogic November 1, 2015 12:49 pm

This program needs about $250 million just to get on the same level as the rest of the Mountain West schools. That’s not ever happening. FBS football has passed UH by and it’s not slowing down.
The only way out is to sell the land under the stadium, build modern facilities and commit. Short of that, give it up already. Develop a great men’s basketball program. The upside is higher with less investment.

  36. WarriorNY November 1, 2015 12:50 pm

June Jones and Rolo as OC/HC in waiting…

It’s the most logical way to get general fans back interested and excited in the program. The general public won’t get excited for anyone else… Let’s bury the hatchet and play an exciting brand of football again with those two at the helm…

ADDED BONUS! With the progression of FANTASY SPORTS in the past few years, Hawaii players would have INSTANT national recognition if we go back to a R&S type system… Has the game changed that much in the past 5 years when we had 3 top ten receivers in the nation in terms of statistics??? People on the East Coast would stay up very late to watch the outcomes of these games…

  37. greenthumb November 1, 2015 12:50 pm

Today is a day to reflect and regroup, and to thank Norm Chow for the parts of college coaching he was effective at. Things like unity and representing your school, and being a good student, and being a good person away from the field and out of the spotlight.

Tomorrow is the time for what’s next. Agree or disagree with some of Norm Chow’s choices, as ST and others have pointed out, he does care about the players and the school. In our haste to build up the program, it would make no sense — and be disrespectful to the players — to toss away everything Chow built as a foundation. Clear-eyed change, yes, where change makes sense. And that includes accountability about what comes next in terms of direction and the future coach. Please, no back room deals. They don’t help the players, the university or the fans.

  38. pokesquid November 1, 2015 12:51 pm

Jeezy….we are not that bare….We do have talent…They just need to be in the right system.

Chow recruited some talent on the offensive side with Ursua, Stubblefield, Collie, Zwahlen, Ewaliko, Bernard, Etc….And the defensive side has some as well.

We have a good base of players…Granted, a lot of them are still young players…but we have some good ones…unlike when Chow took over for Mac and their was nothing, except for maybe Davis (whose at Cal), Dew, Clarke and Yap.

I am already getting excited because I feel these young offensive players we have will fit into Coach Jones system and they will be used in the right way.

  39. Whats up November 1, 2015 12:52 pm

I like the thought of June Jones as head coach with Nick Rolovich as head coach in waiting as Offensive Coordinator.

I also like Dino Babers as head coach.

Either choice is very appealing and will have a younger Head Coach (Rolovich or Babers) to lead Hawaii for the future.

  40. z November 1, 2015 12:57 pm

Sad day today. I so much wanted coach Chow to succeed. But sometimes no can. My best to coach Chow. Take care and good luck.

  41. spartan01 November 1, 2015 12:58 pm

Tough time was had by all… May the young warriors find solace, in the hope of a new day. Imua

  42. kvlogic November 1, 2015 12:58 pm

Dino Babers already has a better job than this one. Get serious. June Jones? They just fired a guy who was basically retired. This should not be some pension plan for good old boys to relive their glory days. And please, no more local private school cronies this time

  43. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 12:59 pm

Hope does spring eternal. Everyone has their favorite candidate to replace Coach Chow. Hope they let the AD do his job and not meddle.

  44. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 1:02 pm

    37. I don’t care what system you run, if Stubblefield can’t catch and scared to get hit over the middle, he will not succeed regardless.

The cupboard is bare compared to other MW teams.

  45. mctruck November 1, 2015 1:03 pm

Neither the OC or DC has shown any improvements in their respective areas so if Naeole was named the interim HC it just goes to show there’s no confidence in those two coaches.
I think if JJ came on board those two current coaches might be saying goodbye.

  46. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 1:08 pm

Didn’t June Jones have a role in Tom Mason becoming UH’s DC? I think that if June Jones were hired, again, he’d probably retain Mason.

  47. HawaiiMongoose November 1, 2015 1:09 pm

I’d like to see Babers take over for Chow, but if he’s out of reach I’m with Old School Dave. Bring in a young and experienced head coach with current success and a winning record from the FCS level. Do NOT hire another career assistant with no proven ability to lead a program.

As for JJ, the collapse of SMU’s program prior to his firing doesn’t bode well for a return to UH. If he comes back it should be on a short-term deal with a built-in plan for succession.

  48. islandman November 1, 2015 1:10 pm

No to Brady Hoke, no hoke-pokey. He took five years to turn around Ball State, although only one at San Diego St, but he stayed there only two years.

  49. kahuna November 1, 2015 1:10 pm

I don’t thinkcupboard is bare either. This is where coaching comes in.
Air Force is the perfect example of coaching can overcome “average” talent. These cadet enrolled at AF to be cadets and not football players….yet they schooled us because they have smart coaches and players.

If UH and AF were to do skill tests like 40 times…bench…etc…..UH would probably come ahead in a lot of in a lot of these but we all know there is much more to football than speed and strength. There’s smart….coaching….and schemes.

I think we lack coaching big time and we don’t have the players to match the scheme. The new coach is going to have to be smart and adjust to the players we have and not ram his scheme down the players throats.

  50. H-Man November 1, 2015 1:11 pm

The cupboard is not bare. And Matlin does not make the hire decision. He makes a recommendation to the Board of Regent (I believe). When Chow was hired, didn’t (former) AD Jim Donovan recommend someone else but was overridden? I’ll wait to see who applies before commenting on a preference. Just hoping the UH opening attracts a lot of candidates. Right now, I am a bit pessimistic because the many problems within the UH system may be a significant deterrent to attract a good field of candidates.

  51. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 1:11 pm

    445. Mason is a jones guy so I have no idea what the prior poster is talking about. I don’t blame our awful D on Mason. It’s the players that can’t win at the line of scrimmage. Coaching staff failed to recruit defensive linemen and Chow even admitted it on the call the coach show. Our d line is getting blown up minus Kennedy. Shawleys issues only adds to it. When we were at full strength, Masons scheme worked well vs Ohio at, Colorado, and so on.

  52. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 1:14 pm

Well, there are 4 remaining games to play. It will be interesting to see what OC Don Bailey has up his sleeve for UNLV. No more questions about how much control he has over the offense. Seniors playing for pride. Underclassmen playing for now and next season, along with being evaluated by the new coaching staff. Assistants, perhaps, making an impression about possibly being retained by the new coach? Could UH go 4-0? Ikaika or Max (or even Beau Rielly) at QB?

  53. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 1:15 pm

To those, that think the cupboard isn’t bare, just watch out defensive line vs Air Force. We have one guy that can penetrate into the backfield. We lost Gener at Lb who is the one guy along with JGW and KT that was competing hard last night. What LBs are you guys excited about in the future? Our WRs are possibly the worst in the MW. We better pray Aaron Zwahlen is the real deal and John Ursua is better than any other wr on this teAm. Our O line is paper thin. Couldn’t get any movement on a small Air Force d

  54. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 1:15 pm

Yup, Dino is not coming–he just improved to 6-2, and will be in the Big12 or even SEC, next year. If you wanted to be in the game, you will need to basically triple Chows base, and that’s not going to happen.

  55. justsomeguy November 1, 2015 1:18 pm

It would be a terrible terrible idea to bring back June Jones to Hawaii football. He is not the motivator he once was, we saw that at SMU. Secondly, he puts VERY LITTLE effort into recruiting….which is precisely what Hawaii football needs right now.

Sadly, with college football and the Power 5 conferences being the cash cow they are UHM cannot afford the type of staff necessary to fulfill the expectations of the fans. Many of whom expect us to win 9 games a year with a budget of peanuts. Norm Chow did the best job at recruiting at UH in nearly 25 years. His offensive technique was unfortunately too antiquated to work today, and it failed.

Best of luck to whomever is next, I know all of us will love and support Hawaii football until the day we die. Imua Warriors.

  56. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 1:18 pm

Just hope they have no more search committee members for the new coach who head hospitals, hotels, insurance companies, public service organizations, and other entities not tied to division I college athletics.

  57. sfogate November 1, 2015 1:19 pm

Chow refused to change when change was needed. You can’t keep hoping for different results with the same actions. At the end of the day, winning or atleast scoring points matters in sports.

  58. kakaako kid November 1, 2015 1:24 pm

I hope it is not June Jones. I still remember him dumping us for SMU, then trying to dump SMU for ASU. The whole act about being torn about leaving only to find out the daggers were in hand a long time prior. The ONLY plus I see about hiring Jones is he might be willing to accept a salary close to that of his top assistants and be willing to mentor a coach for the future. Let us face it, Jones is not a young man and building long term is preferred. The other option is to review all applicants and select the one the AD feels offers the best chance at success. Genius concept.
No doubt Coach Chow had a lot on his plate on and off camera. When the dust settles, I think he will look back and appreciate the opportunity to be a DI head coach.

  59. NorthShoreFan November 1, 2015 1:26 pm

Hey now, blogsters got their wish.

imho, no sense retaining any of the coaches. aren’t they also responsible for the record? seems peeps just want to lobby for their favorites and not consider the body of work the coach has done.
Aside from the usual suspects for HC job, isn’t there any “real” possibilities the blog can suggest?
imho, clean house, everyone goes. all them responsible for the record. the only way you get this kind of results is because all coaches hasn’t been doing their jobs.

  60. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 1:28 pm

I think that Dino Baber’s DC, Kim McCloud will also move on with him to a Power-5 school when that happens, likely soon. McCloud who played at UH and coached at Kaiser High, has been with Babers from back at Baylor, Eastern Illinois, and now Bowling Green (6-2).

  61. kvlogic November 1, 2015 1:28 pm

Boolakanaka knows the score. The UH job is NOT a good one. The athletic facilities on campus, except the arena, are far below even FCS schools, the stadium is 20 miles from campus and it’s a rare loval parent who wants to send their blue-chip football playing son to this university. Buildings are substandard. The Regents meddle in everything and the boosters aren’t rich .. or if they are they’re not confident their money will be well spent.
I don’t envy Matlin trying to sell this job.

  62. ML Warrior November 1, 2015 1:29 pm

The next head coach needs to be able too recruit the local talent and keep them home, and not let them go too the Pac-12 and etc….
Or if the coach from Colorado, Mike Macintyre is dismissed maybe him?
    He turned SJSU around quickly.

  63. 808warriorfan November 1, 2015 1:29 pm

First of all I would personally like to thank Norm Chow for his efforts off the field, namely in the classroom. He did excel in that area but unfortunately not in the “W” column at the end of the game. As far as who the new HC will be … Dino Babers will end up w/ a big name program making a 7 digit salary before the decimal point. With what the UH budget can afford you’ll need an up and coming assistant w/ no prior HC experience but with a name the local fans can relate to … i.e. … “Rolo”, Kim McCloud (Dino’s DC), Ivin Jaspar but I’m not a fan of the triple option, Duane Akina although he probably makes more as a Stanford Assistant, Rich Miano (you know he’ll apply), or an out of work former HC willing to work for what UH can afford (JJ and whoever else). The new guy whoever he is has to be able to understand they type of talent we have and run a system best suited for them. I think that was Norm’s mistake; early on he ran an offense that we did not have the talent for and quite frankly I think the assistants he hired in his first year was a joke … a bunch of “yes men” … no disrespect to Tommy Lee but he lasted only one year and went back into retirement. Norm could have had brothers Ron and/or Cal but no !!! Hopefully our AD and those knucklehead BOR can get their act together and get a good HC in place in time for recruiting

  64. Not an Expert November 1, 2015 1:30 pm

The least risk is to hire June Jones.

    1) He may work for less, wanting to have his assistance paid more.

    2) If not collecting state retirement he may need 2 more years which will increase his retirement benefit and not looking for another place to coach like a up and coming coach.

    3) Knows the shortcoming of the UH system and can work with it.

    4) Has a coaching pipeline that he can assemble that will understand Hawaii and the type of players willing to play here.

    5) Will help again with national exposure. ESPN will cover the saga of June returning to Hawaii. Free publicity that right now an up and coming younger coach will not bring.

    6) Players will play for him, a players coach and he knows how to motivate, although the motivation factor was lost at the Sugar Bowl due to he already had himself out the door to SMU. Blame the administration for this for not extending his contract before the start of his final year. That was another blunder.

    7) May help rejuvenate donations sorely needed for the football program.

    8) Bring an exciting brand of play back that will score points and increase next year’s season ticket purchases.

    9) His goal will probably be to revive the program over 3-5 years with the idea of passing the torch to coaches that will maintain the continuity who will have the Hawaiian way of life in their hearts.

  65. 808warriorfan November 1, 2015 1:32 pm

Junior Ah You out there in Kahuku … maybe he can keep the Kahuku kids from going to the mainland with Cal Lee, Rod York, and Kale Ane as assistants … keep ’em all home …

  66. NorthShoreFan November 1, 2015 1:32 pm

I remember when Norm first got the job and he was overwhelmed with the “non-coaching” part of the job (paper, paper, paper). He didn’t expect it and whoever comes in better have the experience of dealing with “da hui”, bench jockeys and naysayers.
main thing we got 10,000 loyal supporters (last night’s count)..

  67. Not an Expert November 1, 2015 1:33 pm

Spelling error should be assistant and not assistance.

Anyway whomever feels there is another candidate for HC list what you think that person will bring to the players, the fans and the school.

Would like to here reasons for other candidates.

  68. IAM808fan November 1, 2015 1:36 pm

How many supporters were actually with us in the stands last night? I’m there for the men of the 808 and have been thru 0-12 as well as 12-1, even at the super dome.

Chow may have been an academian but definitely not HC material. Should never have been given five year deal.

I don’t feel sorry for his own demise, as it was he who has taken us to new lows, while never taking individual responsibility for any losses. His use of “we” may have been honorable in his mind, it is solely his duty to take responsibility for his errors in coaching, which he made much more than he should have been able to make.

Let’s face it, his release has long been overdue.

Now it’s up to those fans who criticize the loudest to get in the seats and show our team who we really sip port.

  69. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 1:37 pm

Stephen once mentioned that June Jones will never work for UH again, ever since they tried to collect salary paid to him after he bolted for SMU. Of course, that was a long time ago, but Stephen said that it still upsets him. I think Artie Wilson also mentioned that Jones has/had health issues that led to his quitting his SMU job after 2 games in 2014. Coaches need to be tireless workers and fanatical about recruiting, today (not to mention be able to use social media and technology to get to recruits). Recruiting is the life a blood of any program. No more games at Moscow or Las Cruses, anymore for UH.

  70. pokesquid November 1, 2015 1:44 pm

To those that think the cupboard is bare…well, I am not going to judge it based on this game against AF…A team, who btw, plays a style that almost every team is very concerned with facing…Plus, don’t forget the discipline they play with….I will say this, it was depressing watching our guys on defense get outplayed and demoralized…But, I understand that that is what happens when you play a Navy or a Air Force team that is good….They simply do what they do and are simply very good at it….They are very discipline…They are very tactical…And they are again simply bad-ass in what they do…

Yes we do have some shitty players on both sides of the ball…I agree with that…But I still think that we have a good handful of skilled players that needs to be in a Jones system type of offense and NOT in a Chow style of offense.

Zwahlen could be the answer…I am hoping he is…But I am also looking forward to seeing Mckenzie also…And please stop with all the, he is too small crap…I still remember that kid that was so skinny and small who played for Boise St as a Freshman and kicked Big Time ASS…Who knows Mckenzie Milton could be just like him, but with the ability to run and gun.

  71. NorthShoreFan November 1, 2015 1:45 pm

Lee brothers?…hey we’ve been there, done that. they made any difference?
looking for something cheap?…maybe Miano or somebody who don’t mind for $200,000 1st year then 2nd year, third year incentives. If we fire you mid season or contract, you get nothing. We no need on reason to fire you. You get halitosis or ugly Hawaiian print shirts is reason enough. W-L record main thing. No worry about grad rate or criminal records. That’s not football any ways right? We will provide soap for the showers and to wash hand after practice.

  72. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 1:46 pm

Beau Baldwin’s teams at FCS Eastern Washington have given fits to teams like UW, Oregon, and Oregon State. He’s a proven winner at that level, in the Big Sky, and has a National Championship to his credit. He was mentioned as a candidate for the Oregon State job last year. His offense would fit someone like an Ikaika Woolsey (see Vernon Adams, former EWU QB, now at Oregon). I think he earns something like $275,000 at EWU. Coaches like him are used to not having a lot at that level, but are creative, and can coach up their players. Interesting tidbit in that former UH head coach Dave Holmes came from EWU when they were in the NAIA in the late 60s.

#64 “Not an expert” … and bring in Timmy Chang as OC to groom him as a possible HC in the future ?????

  74. mytake November 1, 2015 1:52 pm

The well connected are using their leverage to be on the seach committee as we speak. Nothing like a committee made up of CEO’s of a local engineering and, electric co. Throw in a law firm partner and make sure you have an Iolani and Punahou grad. Also make sure a Christian based religion, preferably Mormon is represented. Now were ready to pick a few candidates to present to the AD.

  76. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 1:54 pm

    69. Air Force hardly even ran the option in the 2nd half. Hawaii couldn’t stop a simple fullback dive or off tackle run. We couldn’t stop the run vs Nevada either. When you don’t recruit defensive linemen, this is what happens.

And why are you assuming Milton is coming when he hasn’t signed anything yet and the coach who recruited him just got fired?

I don’t see 1 position of strength where we are stocked for the future besides safety and maybe LB. Trayvon Henderson and Daniel Lewis have 2 years left. Malachi Mageo and Solomom Matautia are just FR at LB. we are weak in the trenches ok both sides and weak at skill position. No Rbs, below average WRs, 1 QB. In comparison, during run n shoot era, we would be 6 deep at QB where our walk ons were better than our current qbs on scholarship. Moniz, Shane Austin, and Steele Jantz all walked on and are better than any of our qbs.

  77. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 2:03 pm

Jones, Miano, Rolovich, Akina……. here we go.

No denying that UH needs to recruit D-linemen of the “dominant” nature.

  78. Willie November 1, 2015 2:03 pm

Wow, at 5:50 pm on yesterday’s post I hoped for “Chow relieved of his HC duties”. Great to hear that finally something of intelligence has come from Manoa athletics. If this was Maitlin’s call, I applaude him emphatically! This certainly does not ensure success but it is a move in the right direction for the rest of the season and optimistically next year. Go Warriors!

  79. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 2:05 pm

Dino is 6-2 at Bowling Green, and will a HC at either the Big12 or SEC next year….

  80. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 2:05 pm

or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Desirable Qualifications
Successful Division I football coaching experience.
Demonstrated ability to coach and recruit the highly skilled student-athlete.
    Masters Degree

  81. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 2:07 pm

Hmmn, Kim McCloud, went to the same HS as my bestie, Vince Sides. Side note, he married a local gal (Kaiser) and might be a dark horse candidate,,,,

  82. HawaiiMongoose November 1, 2015 2:08 pm

Matlin should definitely be putting in a call to Beau Baldwin. He’s the kind of candidate UH should strongly consider.

  83. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 2:11 pm

Boola: Kim McCloud……. I like him as a candidate, but would he part with Dino, who’s likely moving on to a”big time” school? He’s also coached at places like Baylor, Idaho, Nevada.

  84. A-House November 1, 2015 2:21 pm

The only item of consequence now is allow the UHAD to interview/select the next HC!

no more committees who have failed miserably to select a coach – and the silent power brokers — stay out of this and concentrate on your own careers — your “input/decisions” have not been well for UH foot ball.

  85. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 2:22 pm

    76. Naeole passed on Micah Kapoi 2 years ago. He is now starting at Wisconsin. The top 2 DL in the state that I have watched are Bradlee Anae and Alema Kapoi. Don’t think Hawaii has offered either. Shows how incompetent this staff as a whole is.

  86. A-House November 1, 2015 2:23 pm

what does having a “masters degree” anything to do with being a college football coach?

    please, someone, enlighten me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  87. 808 November 1, 2015 2:28 pm

    #82 “A-House” … AMEN TO THAT !!!!!

  88. lawaia November 1, 2015 2:32 pm

Coach Norm Chow: Mahalo Nui Loa. You will always be a Son of Hawaii Nei. Imua Na Koa Anuenue.

  89. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 2:33 pm

Akina might be up for it, if they give him some flex ($$) on assistants…

  90. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 2:33 pm

Next order of business is get the job opening posted ASAP to start the hiring process. Because of State hiring protocol, hiring coaches is always a lengthy process. Best to get on immediately.

Unfortunately, the best candidates won’t be available until the regular season ends because they are still working with their current teams. Granted, most coaching candidates have agents and there’s nothing slowing those guys down from getting the applications ready for their clients.

I know it’s going to be next to impossible based on the competence level of the people running UH, but UH needs to announce the next coach before the December 14, 2015 through January 13, 2016 dead period. That way, the coach can try to assemble his staff during the dead period and not lose lose recruiting time.

  91. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 2:34 pm

Many HC jobs now consider a masters the terminal degree for the position.

  92. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 2:35 pm

  93. pokesquid November 1, 2015 2:36 pm

    75. You ever heard of just giving up?….Well that is what happens when a team blows you out…runs all over you and you can’t do shit to stop it….AF simply demoralized Hawaii and the kids, not all, just gave up…..That happens all the time….The only ones that seems to keep play hard was the seniors, as they know that this is their last year to play football….The younger players don’t care…All they know is that this is not the end for them…so they most times just give up trying….Again, it happens all the time….But to simply count it as lack of talent is not correct for everyone on the team.

Yeah Yeah Yeah, we all know about the lack of DL recruits….We ALL know about it, especially since we lost so much of our DL studs from last season…..But even with that fact, did we play well against Colorado, Ohio St and some what against Wisky?….Yeah, I think so.

Why are you assumming that Milton would still not come?….Do you think other players from Hawaii didn’t come to play for Hawaii after Mac got fired? or when Jones left?…I believe if the scholarship offer is still on the table for him he will commit….Why?…Just a feeling and what I heard that he wants to stay home near his family….Also, with him getting hurt this season…his offers may be only from Hawaii, if any.

DL needs help…OL needs help…LBs and DBs ok….WR we got a good young squad to develop with Collie, Ursua, Stubs, Ewaliko, Timoteo (if he comes), Torres.

As for Moniz…we got lucky with him (and btw he wasn’t playing in Chows system so it made a difference)….Still wonder if he even would of gotten his chance if the other 2 QBs ahead of him didn’t get hurt….Like I said we got lucky with him…Austin wasn’t that good when he was here….But he became better only now that he is older and Jantz…well I don’t agree.

Wittek is not good as advertised…Woosley is not a QB…Reilly who know, he is not given a chance to play….Zwahlen and Milton (for now) is who is am looking forward to and who I feel will help our team out in the future.

  94. graham November 1, 2015 2:36 pm

Anyone besides Junes Jones or Rich Miano. We need young blood that can recruit and excite the fan base. Ulbrich and Kalani Sitake would be awesome. Coach Stark would be great if he could get his life together. Coach Aranda would be a good hire.

  95. graham November 1, 2015 2:37 pm

I do have a lot for Chow. It didnt work out on the field but he ran a good clean program.

  96. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 2:44 pm

For the folks that know the inside baseball, they realize the biggest problem with this position, is the institutional support, both from a monetray and mission level. To consider this job, without that consideration, is a fools errand…e.g. You need to have your eyes wide open with this job.

  97. el burro sabio November 1, 2015 2:45 pm

Mr. A-House, it’s the same theory where at certain levels in the army, a colonel is in charge and not a sergeant even if the sergeant might actually be better at the job.

  98. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 2:45 pm

    89. Do you know what an assumption means? An assumption is you talking like Milton is on the team already. I’m not assuming anything until LOIs are signed. If I assume every verbal commit is binding, then Jordan Agasiva would be our starting RT right now. Lots of things happen that we don’t know about.

Yeah I get players quit. But we’ve been getting dominated. I don’t care what we did in our non conference schedule. Those teams have us vanilla looks. Colorado did run the ball on us. The D line that is the future has been getting smoked by New Mexico, Nevada, Sdsu, Boise, and Air Force. That’s what matters.

  99. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 2:50 pm

Candidates with local ties, that wil be given a look: Norwood (Tulsa DC), Robert Anae (BYU OC) and Akina (Stanford DB coach). Maybe, Adrian Klemm, (UCLA run coordinator /OL coach), he is on the rise as a coach, not sure he would leave Westwood and his 700k+ salary,,..

  100. seewhy November 1, 2015 2:53 pm

    RE: Jeezy33

So true. Nothing is for sure. Just look at those two Kahuku players last year. UH commits all the way until the week of signing. Just like you said, never count on a player until he is signed AND enrolled at the University.

  101. Pete Jek November 1, 2015 2:58 pm

June Jones was great but we need someone younger with less baggage. And again, the run-and-shoot will no longer be as effective in today’s college football. Esp. not with this group of WR’s who are long, but neither quick nor fast. Aside from Ewaliko, there isn’t anyone who can legitimately run after the catch. And none of the receivers have proven to have reliable hands.

Rich Miano – nice guy who is loyal to the program but hasn’t had any legitimate coaching jobs at reputable schools since he was let go by Chow. It is questionable that he has a broad enough network to hire quality assistants and establish a solid recruiting effort outside of Hawaii.

Rolovich was very impressive as the OC under McMackin. His offense effectively transitioned from a pure run-and-shoot to incorporate more zone-read and spread concepts with Moniz at QB. Rolling would be a great hire – in 5 years. He’s still a little bit too young for the positin and, like Miano, hasn’t proven to be an effective recruiter.

Certainly, there must be more options than these…

  102. hitman November 1, 2015 3:00 pm

aloha everyone !! aloha coach chow thank for giving it your best shot !! to bad had to end this way !! hope your your family the very best !! and we all have back the football more so know and show them some love and show up for there home games !!player keep your heads up and play hard !! it will get better !! and coaches time to open up that play books and show us the fans what you got!! let see if peoples hands was tied? and time to play health player that want to play let see what we got !! time to get bo in the game !!

  103. H-Man November 1, 2015 3:02 pm

Hey, the job posting is now closed. So what’s up? Was it posted prematurely?

  104. oneseason November 1, 2015 3:02 pm

I look forward to seeing what our defense looks like next week. The time of possession for UH in the first quarter was 3.9 minutes and 4.4 minutes in the second quarter. The UH defense had to play almost 22 minutes in the first half alone.

  105. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 3:02 pm

    88. That’s good news.

  106. Kryon November 1, 2015 3:04 pm

Crazy fans, tricks r for kids. No way babers coming here. He is in a bigger market n conference. Big program coaches don’t come to Hawaii. We have nothing to offer. Only for their last hoorah would they come. Babers is young n eager for accomplishments. Scratch him from your xmas list.
Y r some still stuck in the past. JJ is out dated. Did u ever think Alabama would run a no huddle shot gun formation today back in 2007? No way. But now at times they do. Everyone is running some sort of face pace spread offense now. Defenses have adapted. JJ offense did nothing at smu. N he had a state of the art facility to help recruiting. Still he did nothing. Y r some so stubborn n set on him? Need to think more out of the box and move forward.
Rolo? No. What has he done? He still has alot to learn. Give him more time to develop n grow. Y does the next coach have to have a Hawaii tie? I’m sure we can find the hidden gem. Maybe someone like a Houston’s offensive coordinator? Idk, but please no JJ.

  107. kev-1 November 1, 2015 3:12 pm

I just sent in my application. I’ll let you guys know if I get an interview. If I’m gonna turn this program around, I’m going to need some good assistants.

    Any of you guys interested?

  108. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 3:12 pm

The AD I can only assume has already been working the phone with boosters….

  109. kimo browner November 1, 2015 3:13 pm

#36. Bingo! JJ and his heir apparent Rolo coming back to Manoa.
Expect things to change….for the better.

  110. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 3:19 pm

UH needs to make Dec 14 a priority date for hiring he next coach.

Priority 2 would be to not consider aging career assistants with no relevant HC experience as candidates for the job.

UH went this route twice in a row with very poor results.

  111. hitman November 1, 2015 3:21 pm

it’s time 4 jj bet he would win with this team!!this team is not bad at all !! just that player are hurt ,or playing hurt not 100% !! to much old school style of coaching starters cant lose there starting job !! time to but the best player on the field !! thanks max for giving it your best but we need to look at next trying to see if the qb s at game speed !! to me the best to max would be out of the shot gun !! right he is to slow in the proset !! if health maybe different story !!

  112. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 3:22 pm

And I think Rich would still need to get his masters….

  113. pokesquid November 1, 2015 3:25 pm

Anyways, no sense talking bad about the kids we got now….Lets just hope we get someone who can come in and get us back to respectability fast….cause 4 years of pain is not good.

  114. A-joe November 1, 2015 3:26 pm

So, before anyone goes off and start scrambling for a new coach, we need to take a look at the house we have for the new coach to live and thrive in. If we don’t we’re gonna right back here three years from now kicking out another coach and looking for another one.

Before we start soliciting more money from the state and the general public, the powers that be need to really take a serious look at where and how they want the entire program to move forward. They need to establish a vision and set goals to attain and achieve. Simply hiring a new head coach and hoping for a miracle isn’t gonna cut it.

Matlin needs to take a good look at himself first and foremost. Will he be just another AD that maintains status quo like so many before him? Or will he have the balls to bust down doors and execute a vision that changes the programs course towards a prosperous future…

If he’s up to the challenge, Matlin needs to grow some bull headed Stan Sheriff balls and develop Governor Burns vision and take this fledging program to new heights.

  115. Rodney November 1, 2015 3:31 pm

Thank coach chow it was tough goings
but you did things the correct way.
Student athletes were treated very well.
High marks for APR and GPA
My vote for new HC is the Kahuku
    High School coach .Vae Tata!!!

  116. Derek November 1, 2015 3:33 pm

Jeezy33, are you eligible to be a recruiter? You seem to be a good evaluator. Or, you can feed the information to a coach who can follow up. I agree, we need sorely help on the DL and OL, but we need a bunch of playmakers too. In short, we need everything. We need good evaluators for walk ons too.

  117. SteveM November 1, 2015 3:36 pm

I was extremely frustrated last night. Chow’s position was now untenable. If the cheesecake ever turned up in the Tsai-ko Guess-the-Score, I was gonna eat it…end of guesses. 👿

But since then, Chow has been relieved. I wish to put the Guess-the-score on hiatus (until our next win) since it would be mostly negative and I don’t think the players need so see how much they are predicted to lose by from half of their alleged fans. They just lost their head coach, so let’s give it some time. NO Guess-the-Score listing this week.

  118. George November 1, 2015 3:36 pm

Matlin has proved to me that he does not make good decisions. The three listed are a joke. Chow is better. At least he was a decent man.
Take care coach. You are better off without a job at at uh. Pity the next coach.

  119. Arcumfortis November 1, 2015 3:37 pm

I think Dave Matlin deserves recognition for his willingness to move authoritatively. I felt all along that a bowl appearance was the minimum requirement for our team and coach this year. When this bench mark was not met it was time to move and move quickly. Matlin did this in a timely fashion. Let’s hope his willingness to act assertively will translate into both an effective search for the next coach and some very sober discussion with upper campus about what we need to do to be successful.

It would be nice to think a new coach will change everything. It may well help but the institution and the state need to understand that more is needed to compete effectively. I hope our current circumstance can serve as a catalyst for a renewed and upgraded commitment. If not we will simply be mired in mediocrity for a longer period of time. If this is the outcome we would be better off recognizing that we don’t have the will or the means to compete and throw in the towel.

  120. st. anthony trojan November 1, 2015 3:42 pm

  122. Boolakanaka November 1, 2015 3:52 pm

I will say that Rich did a very solid job on the walk-on side of the program, where almost every year there were at least 2-3 starters coming from those ranks…

  123. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 3:59 pm

ENOUGH WITH THE JUNE JONES TALK!!!

Unless you’ve been in a coma the past couple of years JJ’s offense has not worked at SMU. The game has evolved since 2007 and other forms of the spread have proven more effective than the run-n-shoot. If you were paying attention, JJ actually ran the ball a lot more at SMU because he found a workhorse in Zach Line (multiple 1,000yd seasons; which never happened while JJ was at UH). As the spread has evolved, so have the strategies to defend the spread, which is why JJ’s r-n-s hasn’t been effective.

Regarding Rolo, he’s only been good if he inherits good players. The only really quality offensive player he’s brought in was Alex Green, but Green was under utilized at UH. At UH, Rolo inherited Salas, Pilares, and a few quality OLinemen. Once they graduated after 2010, the offense took a noticeable step back even with an experienced Moniz returning. While at Nevada, Rolo inherited a quality QB in Fajardo, a NFL TE in Virgil Green, and a killer run offense. As Chris Aults players have graduated, Nevada’s offense has become more finesse, and now it’s in rebuild mode since Fajardo graduated. Nevada has no quality wins this season. The offense was pretty hapless vs the good teams they’ve played.

  124. Duster November 1, 2015 3:59 pm

While I think the move was overdue, I wish Norm Chow the best. Sometimes things simply don’t work out.

  125. Don Weir November 1, 2015 4:00 pm

    #89 Pokesquid
#75. You ever heard of just giving up?

CBS had a shot of the coach’s box with about 3 minutes left. The view was quite telling about the Asst Coaches and their attitude up in the box!

Maddog50, Levi Stanley, Elroy Chong, Manny DeSoto, Tui Ala, Bill Letz, Charley Aiu, Simeon Alo, Aaron Ahu, Harold Stringert, just to name a few, went 100% until the final whistle.
I would expect UH coaches to do the same.

  126. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 4:02 pm

Not too sure on Miano as HC. Only because he’s been out of the college coaching game for a while now.

I’d rather have a guy who’s been eating, drinking, and breathing game film and recruiting the past few years. I’m a little hesitant to give the keys to somebody who’s in the booth, doing camps, and other fun projects not named coaching.

  127. Tempmanoa November 1, 2015 4:05 pm

June Jones would be my choice. His record speaks for itself and he is a proven rebuilder of programs. He did it here and at SMU. Talking to a lawyer in Dallas who is an SMU booster and alumni, June did well until his last three years as SMU stepped up its schedule to get into a P5 conference regularly scheduling the best teams in Texas– Texas A&M, Baylor, Houston, and TCU– without the ability to match the talent at these schools. Matlin knows June as the guy who brought his teams to the Hawaii bowl and won, blowing out the Mountain West champion in 2012.

  128. FearGod November 1, 2015 4:20 pm

what station will we tune in at 5pm? will it be khon, kitv or khnl

  129. Hoosier November 1, 2015 4:25 pm

How about Kevin Wilson, HC at Indiana? Great offense but no defense. And I doubt he will be back. On second thought, forget that suggestion. Just wishful thinking on my part that someone would Please take him. Hope UH can move things along in the hiring process.

  130. Raider Dogs November 1, 2015 4:29 pm

We got what we wished for now its time for everyone to show their support for the rest of the season. Even teams like mine can turn it around and have a good season with the right guidance. Matlin take your time and make the right decision for all of our sakes. Can’t wait for Mondays sports animals for their reaction for this and now Gary D has to admit Raiders are better than Jets.

  131. FearGod November 1, 2015 4:33 pm

If Rich Miano was Head Coach, I would like to see Chad Ikei be the strength and conditioning coach, the Offensive Coordinator be Adrian Klemm and the Defensive Coordinator be Jeff Ulbrich.
    But if cannot, cannot

  132. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 4:39 pm

My hope for the rest of this season is that Naeole can drill home the fact to the non-seniors is that they need to continue to give full effort because the next coach will be watching the film, evaluating the returning scholarship players to see what he has to work with, and eventually determining if he needs to reallocate scholarships for his type of players, especially so if there will be a major offensive style change.

  133. Ipu Man November 1, 2015 4:40 pm

As for the hate June Jones crowd, who do you think
would bring excitement and ticket sales other than him?
    Hmmmmm?
    June Jones – Coach
    Mac Mackin – D- Coach
    Rolo – O Coach

  134. Tarheel warrior November 1, 2015 4:40 pm

This is what we as fans have been waiting for. Now it’s time to regroup and finish out the season in a winning note. We have the talent, just need to put things together and play like Warriors!!

  135. mytake November 1, 2015 4:45 pm

I hope the powers realize another bad hire can send the program into a death spiral.

  136. WarriorNY November 1, 2015 4:49 pm

    FUHA,
I haven’t been in a coma or living under a rock.

How can you say that JJ offense hasn’t worked since 2007; then say in the next paragraph that the only reason Rolo’s 2010 team was good was because he inherited JJ’s players? I’m a little confused…

The amount of kala will both open and close doors for the candidates…

  138. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 5:02 pm

    129.

Rolo tweaked the offense after JJ left, it wasn’t really JJ’s RnS. Fewer screens, shovel pass was seldomly used, less pre-snap motion. Those were the observable differences. The play calling flow didn’t have the same touch when Rolo was calling the plays, but I attribute that to Rolo being green as an OC.

JJ’s RnS looked awful the past couple years at SMU and surprisingly he never had any sustained success at QB. It was a revolving door at the #1 QB spot until Gilbert was there, but he underperformed much like Wittek has been for UH.

  139. WarriorNY November 1, 2015 5:05 pm

That being said, I would love to have Babers or Norwood or Ulbrich or Klemm (though I believe he was suspended twice for violations)…. But that’s just wishful thinking…

2009 SMU 8-5 (6-2 in conference) blowout win in Hawaii Bowl
2010 SMU 7-7 (6-2 in conference) lost in CUSA Champ game and lost in bowl
2011 SMU 8-5 (5-3 in conference) win in Bowl game
2012 SMU 7-6 (5-3 in conference) blowout win in Hawaii Bowl
    2013 SMU 5-7 (4-4 in conference) no bowl game…
    2014 he was 0-2 before resigning…

That really isn’t a bad record if you actually look at how many quality teams they played during that time…

  140. FearGod November 1, 2015 5:08 pm

Tonight i would like to suggest to all God’s people who love this team to pray for them and to pray for the AD as he leads this search for a new coach because we know He is in control of all things no matter who the coach is.

  142. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 5:10 pm

Sure JJ will sell some tickets, but a lot has changed since he was here. Politics and leadership within the university are a lot worse now than when JJ was here.

UH and JJ would need to mend some serious wounds before they start talking again. As ST mentioned it’s not like JJ doesn’t have an ego.

  143. cappie the dog November 1, 2015 5:11 pm

You’re not that old, Coach Chow.

    You’re a smart man.

    You’ll always find work.

I’m sorry you didn’t win more.

Thank you for not putting our program on probation.

  144. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 5:15 pm

I really don’t have any suggestions for next HC. Its a really complex problem with a lot of limiting factors.

Niumatololo is an interesting name I’ve heard, but I just don’t think a triple option offense has a high enough ceiling to contend for conference championships year in and year out even when things are going well.

  145. C-Pop November 1, 2015 5:23 pm

Bachelors Degree minimum “academic requirement” to be major college coach

  146. Rick Martinez November 1, 2015 5:24 pm

Rich Miano, Nick Rolo “Revenge” Rolovich and of course JJ are potential candidates. Of course, lets not forget JJ was a complete disaster at SMU. Ok, an 85% disaster at SMU. Some people say JJ didn’t know how to recruit but he actually did. He picked up Colt Brennan and Devon Bess straight out of incarceration in Colorado and Cali respectively. A rock solid O and D line can be picked up right out of Halawa. Good coaches know this. Add a few Red Raiders at Kahuku and we’ll be back to another victory at the Sugar Bowl and undefeated season. Yeah baby!!! Oh…. wait…..

  147. Rick Martinez November 1, 2015 5:28 pm

Let’s mention one more thing. I for one am tired of hearing “how hard” this team is working and “how hard” the coaches are working. It’s about results, not effort. I would prefer a team and coaches that gave minimal effort and actually won a game. We are supposed to “be teaching young men about life and preparing them for the real world.” Well, in the real world no one cares how “hard” you work. It’s 100% about results and politics. Learn the lesson, boys.

  148. cocobean November 1, 2015 5:29 pm

I was at the game running down our starters. We have a fairly young team on offense and a lot of returning experience on defense. Ursua heads a crop of red shirts that should be in the mix next year. The cupboard in my opinion is more full then the cupboard chow inherited.

I was disappointed Chow and Co. Didn’t make full use of all the ingredients they had available. They couldn’t figure out a way to get Ewaliko at least 4 touches a game on offense. Last night we handed off to our rbs only six times. they were asked to block the rest of the time. Disappointed they didn’t have draw,s, shovel passes, or short routes to make better use of them. The coaches would have been better off having someone like Vele in they’re place. A jack of all trades, primary a blocker who can occasionally run the ball or run routes. In my opinion it’s been a season long thing in keeping a short list of players who are writteninto the offensive game plan.

  151. Old School Dave November 1, 2015 5:37 pm

HNN already making it sound like it’ll be either Jones of Miano as the next head coach. So mainland candidates need not apply, according to Bobby Curran. It’s gotta be someone with “Hawaii Connections.” Very nearsighted, IMHO, not to mention limiting the list of potentially talented coaching candidates. Did Tomey and Wagner have local connections when they came here? Laura Beeman? Hope AD Dave Matlin looks at the candidates head coaching record and who is best suited to rebuild this program. Here we go, again.

  152. pokesquid November 1, 2015 5:37 pm

If not JJ for head coach…I like this guy and maybe we can steal him away from SMU.

    Chad Morris

Who cares that Morris is struggling in his first year at SMU, which was a complete mess when he arrived? He’s one of the best offensive minds in the game, the architect of Clemson’s high-powered attacks from 2011-2014. And he’s going to be an outstanding head coach. Plus, he knows the ACC terrain as well as the recruiting landscape in the Mid-Atlantic region. Morris is the guy who developed Tajh Boyd and helped get Deshaun Watson to Death Valley.

  153. cocobean November 1, 2015 5:39 pm

Jeezy. Kapoi was offered and verbally committed to UH. He pulled a Wade Keliilipi and decommitted when a power five school came late into the picture.

  154. Derek November 1, 2015 5:48 pm

Like anything else, to be a winner in college football you have to have a good QB that makes plays and moves the chains and scores touchdowns. That’s #1. Then find solid players to complement the other positions. Graham, Wittek, Woolsey. Nope. Schroeder got better over time, but he was bad in the beginning and he got hurt too. Moniz did well, but he got hurt too. Colt was the best, Timmy was good. Jason Whieldon was pretty good. Tyler Graunke was good until he had some problems, Dan Robinson was good, Rolo came on after a slow start. Alexander was doing good until that gruesome injury. So we still have Woolsey, Reilly, and Zwahlen. At this point Wittek is not doing the job. Neither is Ikaika. Try Reilly to see what he can do. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t, but find out under fire. Save Zwahlen’s redshirt and hope Milton is still committed to UH. Look for 2 more HS QBs and maybe an established good JC QB ready to play.

This is a sad day for the program. The record speaks for itself as did the game and the crowd last night. So now moving forward……I hope players get it that football is a game within a game. It is the players game from the internal standpoint and if you do not want to punish and dominate your opponent then I don’t really think you understand that part. This is not a shoving match and it really is about you doing your 1/11 each and every down and if you can inspire a teammate or two to do the same great. Football is for winners and leaders…..the alternative is the stark reality of losing. Be at UNLV and really there is no reason not to beat these guys at all-GO WARRIORS!!! You have a bright future as long as you understand the effort one must give to be a winner start to finish-

  161. Bryson November 1, 2015 6:01 pm

I’ll admit I wasn’t a fan of the JJ coming back rumors but the more I think about it the more I feel it’s what’s best for the program.

    Derek…

I agree…use Reilly….I still don’t understand why Chow or Bailey for that matter don’t use him…I mean, he redshirted last season…Try him out.

This is so frustrating as we all know Woosley is not the answer…I mean I like the kid but he is not a QB to build a team around.

Reilly from what I seen from videos is an exciting player that can run and pass…He is 6-6…He is a mature Freshman who is married…The kid is not shy as he is a performer who can sing and dance in front of a crowd…Some said from his HS videos he looks like Kapernick when he runs the ball….Heard ST say good things when he was practicing…He comes from a athletic family.

I mean what’s the problem?….Give the kid a chance and let’s see what he can do already….Woosley already had his many chances….Enough already.

Coach Naeole….please give Reilly a shot.

It’s way too early to be naming favorites to the job. I’m not going to make any predictions until we know who are in the final pool of candidates.

  172. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 6:48 pm

155… If I’m not mistaken all UH assistants are year by year contracts. It doesn’t really make sense to fire them unless they really did something stupid/unlawful/fake paperwork or lie about iPads.

  173. cocobean November 1, 2015 7:03 pm

Cal -70. JJ -62. Band aids at best. But maybe that’s the best we can afford at this time.

  174. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 7:20 pm

160… That’s probably the best way to put JJ if he were to be the next coach. He’s not going to be coaching for the long term, good or bad.

I wouldn’t mind if UH took the opinion of being a “stepping stone” job. Meaning, go with in a younger coach, hopefully he does a good job and then let him move on to a bigger job once he gets to a point that UH can’t afford him. The only way UH could lose a coach like that to a big program is if he pulls a 1999 June Jones, which is unrealistic; or if he sets the program on a noticeable upward trend like how McElwain did at Colorado St., however, McElwain came from The SEC and was already on the radar of SEC schools before he left for CSU. So it’s unlikely this would be the scenario also.

If all goes well, UH would get 3-5 years of the “up-and-comer” and then the program (on the upswing) would be handed off to the next guy, which UH could afford to pay up to hire a known commodity if they play their contracts right (which we know they won’t).

  175. Willie November 1, 2015 7:22 pm

  180. el burro sabio November 1, 2015 7:35 pm

FUHA if you recall Chow was put in the position of having decide which assistants stayed and which were out so many people unfairly faulted him for not keeping Rolo, Aranda, Miano and Cal, and still fault him for what shouldn’t have been his decision. I think that you would know that the head coach should be allowed to bring in whomever he chooses as his assistants.

  181. Come on, Man! November 1, 2015 7:38 pm

seewhy: otto klum also was coaching in an era when UH was known as The Fighting Deans, and played a schedule of the 8th Infantry Battalion, Honolulu Athletic Club, a few high schools, and so on. They weren’t even affiliated with the NCAA yet.

Former UH Athlete: “JJ’s RnS looked awful the past couple years at SMU and surprisingly he never had any sustained success at QB. It was a revolving door at the #1 QB spot until Gilbert was there, but he underperformed much like Wittek has been for UH.”

sorry. this is incorrect. SMU was mediocre and trending downward by the time JJ left (and then sharply fell off a cliff after he left), but it’s false that he never had any sustained success at SMU. there were a lot of issues leading to JJ leaving SMU and the subsequent collapse of the program, including the fact that he wanted to come back to hawaii. the arizona state fiasco, health issues, and the fact that his recruiting was very poor, but you can’t pin the decline to a simple schematic answer of “the run and shoot doesn’t work anymore.”

and his offense did evolve during his tenure at SMU, including looks out of the pistol formation as well as incorporating air raid concepts. let’s not pretend the modern spread offense popped into existence out of nowhere, nobody has ever seen it before and that people have all of a sudden magically figured out the run and shoot.

the modern spread offense has been around since the 1920s, but football is cyclical, and trends keep repeating themselves. i mean, if the current spread offense era figured out the spread passing offenses so well then why is the air raid still alive and kicking in 2015?

  182. el burro sabio November 1, 2015 7:42 pm

Mr. A-House, one day we go lunch and I’ll explain it, too long to explain here.

Norm showed his A$$ and acted like a smug prick in his final press conference. GOOD RIDDANCE to a coach that was never up to the challenge. Needed to retire after USC.

  184. Bring back JJ now November 1, 2015 7:50 pm

QUIT WITH ALL THIS “NO MORE JJ TALK!!”

I can type in all caps too. If you look who can bring people back to the program ASAP, bring an excitement back to Aloha Stadium and energize the fan base and being a proven winner, well June Jones IS the answer. You talk about his time is passed? Everyone now runs the type of offense he brought to Hawaii, he is more on top of the game than Chow ever was. Bring him in, bring back Rolo as a HC in waiting and absolutely bring back Miano for local recruiting, etc…

Ault went back to Nevada, Reilly back to Oregon State, it has been done before with success….

Chow in almost 4 full years against all opponents- 10 total wins
JJ against just Power 5 teams- 9 wins

  185. Sonnyboy November 1, 2015 7:53 pm

There are two D1 coaches whom i think are ready to come home after very successful stints away, they are Robert Anae (BYU OC), Ken Niumatololo(Navy). They would keep all of our top local prospects home.

    Freakin’ Mets… Freakin’ Giants… Freakin’ Jets… Freakin’ Mets again…

    Sigh…. Sorry what a frustrating weekend…

  187. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 8:03 pm

167… Every new head coach has to make decisions on who to keep or not from the previous regime.

People in Hawaii have stronger feelings/opinions about fellow alumni/locally connected people than most other college athletic communities. Which explains why people were and still are miffed over which local coaches stay or go. Being from here or UH alumni should only be just a factor of developing an interest list. It should never be a qualifying requirement to the job.

Me, I just want the coach to run the program how he sees best. For Chow, he looked to the mainland mostly and it didn’t work. JJ had a mix of local and mainland. You have to look at the mainland because there’s only one college FB in the state of Hawaii.

Ultimately you might want to reassess the attractiveness of the UH job if a coach is being “pressured” into hiring people from Hawaii and not be allowed to hire whoever he wants for assistants.

Strategically, I thinks it’s smart to have some local connections on staff, but you have to be careful about putting pressure on a new coach to do it.

But I only worry about how many guys are “out”. Saturday’s performance was embarrassing except for big KT, JGW, and Gener. Those guys showed me they are true Warriors.

Hopefully, there are some guys buying back “in” now that Chow is out.

  191. WarriorNY November 1, 2015 8:18 pm

I feel like Chow’s offense has always been fit for the NFL. Not for a low-budget school without the physical attributes of their competitors…

What Hawaii needs is Creativity and uniqueness… We need a niche…

  192. WarriorNY November 1, 2015 8:24 pm

    FUHA,
No Coughlin does not need to retire… He just has no players on his defense… He hired an OC that makes Eli play out of his mind. He hired a DC that’s great when he has players… Problem is… They don’t have ANY players on D… I thought Eli and the offense played brillantly but the defense just couldn’t get a stop… I feel like that’s a trend this year…

  193. el burro sabio November 1, 2015 8:26 pm

FUHA, agree with your assessment, I just don’t want the new coach to be pressured to keep anyone.

  194. Come on, Man! November 1, 2015 8:28 pm

regarding this whole notion of “the run and shoot/JJ’s offense is dead and outdated because the spread era killed it,” i mean, where do people get this idea from? I don’t get it. if anything, RnS was supposed to be dead in the early 90s when people started to zone blitz but people are making like JJ’s version of the run and shoot has NEVER adapted to defensive counters and that all of a sudden, there’s some schematic issue that doesn’t allow it to be a viable passing offense on the college level (even though almost all offenses in college and NFL are using run and shoot concepts, like “choice,” “go,” “switch” etc).

But nobody ever identifies what these major schematic flaws that make the offense so outdated are and why JJ or some other coach running the offense can’t make adjustments in protection or route running, especially considering that the ENTIRE OFFENSE is predicated on adjusting pass patterns on the fly based on how the receivers and the quarterback is reading the coverage, versus the typical pre-packaged plays you see in today’s hurry up no huddle spread offenses, where you have a zone read, bubble screen, and some kind of slant or go route packaged together and the qb makes a very simple read and tries to pick the right option.

but if any of you guys have an answer to this question that’s not just “because UH lost to georgia in the sugar bowl and june jones left SMU,” I’m interested in hearing it.

  198. kimo browner November 1, 2015 8:41 pm

JJ HC, Rolo heir apparent will be his first hire.
Im not sure about the NEV O stuff young Rolo picked up but Im sure JJ will run his own O.
He has a host of former players he can add to his staff plus retain a few from the current staff. This I can say, Miano will NOT be one. I believe as others that JJ wants to build a foundation for the FUTURE comprised of former UH ballers who have credentials. So, in effect, JJ wants to build a football program that is a continuum. Naturally, not all former players-turned-coach may be willing to accept positions bc the UH payout is less than competitive.
Still, the lure to return will be attractive for many.
I like all the reasoning #67 offered to hire JJ.
Here is another one I have not seen mentioned.
JJ has been in town since the start of high school play attending many games, often on the sidelines, at practices, scrimmages and games. Not recruiting (of course), but still, has had a great view of many of the top ballers in the State of Hawaii. Many of these players have made verbals…and we know how that can swing. Hawaii has had its share going the other way, including a few heart breakers for JJ. For a Hawaii HS player to be part of a what can be a historic turn-a-round there can be no ceiling for passion and loyalty to STATE that his hire would generate.
Look, Im not an inside guy but this script is too spectacular to pass off as coincidental. It makes too much sense. And, importantly, this story– the 8-mile line that JJ has walked since departing to pay his dues… Yes, he is coming back, this time to stay. This time to build an everlasting program. This time to pass off a legacy, not for himself, but rather, for the STATE he loves, its people and children-he adores and for the former players he coached!

  199. Pete Jek November 1, 2015 8:47 pm

Let’s not make the same mistake USC made. They tried to bring back Pete Carroll-era coaches with Steve Sarkisian and they failed. June Jones was great, but won’t be nearly as successful in a second stint at UH. Defenses have evolved. Aside from the superpowers in the power conferences, most teams run up-tempo, no-huddle schemes with dual threat QB’s. June Jones doesn’t have a history with dual threat QB’s. UH needs a relatively young coach (think early to mid 50’s) with Hawaii ties.

“Let’s not make the same mistake USC made. They tried to bring back Pete Carroll-era coaches with Steve Sarkisian and they failed. ”

they failed because sark is a raging alcoholic dealing with some intense personal issues, not because they hired a coach from the carroll era.

“June Jones was great, but won’t be nearly as successful in a second stint at UH.”

    possibly.

    “Defenses have evolved. ”

be specific. how? what are defenses schematically doing that the june jones version of the run and shoot, and june jones as a coach, would be unable to counter?

  204. PONO November 1, 2015 8:58 pm

I really hoped Chow would succeed but Matlin finally got the balls to make the right choice for the FB program. I wish Chow the best of luck. While JJ is the popular choice and I’m sure he would bring excitement back I’m not sure if he can sustain success without capable assistants. I’d be OK with bringing him back if it was on an interim basis and there was a coaching in waiting on the staff such as Rolo or McCloud. Regardless, I’ll be back at the stadium to see the new warriors.

  205. jT November 1, 2015 9:03 pm

Is Mike Cavanaugh interested in becoming a head coach? He was popular with his o-line back in the day and was a player’s coach. He could have JJ run the offense.

The deed is done, I don’t need to say anything else about that except I wish him well in his next chapter. Time for all of us to move on to the next era of the mighty University of Hawaii football program’s re-rise to greatness.

  207. hitman November 1, 2015 9:05 pm

if the AD hires da right one of the top 3 from we might get all 3 of them coaching here next year !! pick da wrong guy and get only one !!

  208. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 1, 2015 9:06 pm

A friend had said that maybe George Lumpkin would be a legitimate candidate.

Me and said friend are no longer on talking terms after that exchange. But thoughts of the blog?

  209. cappie the dog November 1, 2015 9:18 pm

    171.

I was so shocked to see Harvey start the ninth.

    He’s not Nolan Ryan.

If Ryan says, “Leave me in,” you leave him in.

The last thing MLB needs is a short series.

The announcer made a big presumption that a NFL fan would switch over to baseball.

I was rooting for the Mets just for the fact that they’re a big market, and, great, I’m starting to parrot Colin Cowherd’s rhetoric.

  210. cappie the dog November 1, 2015 9:19 pm

    I meant 186.

  211. kimo browner November 1, 2015 9:24 pm

#182. There is more to building a winning program than you cite. Although Im having problems with your formula for O success and “defenses have evolved” arguments. Look, every week in college play I see passes thrown and caught in between the seams w the spread O. Unless you are talking about Norm Chow’s Offense. BTW, how great did Oregon look this year without Mariota? What I liked about JJs O is he didnt need 4-star athletes to make it work. Yet he sent a bunch to the pros and he won faster than Norm Chow could replace coaches he fired. If you can find your dream coach for $300,000 TO $400,000/yr and top assistants that will take 50% PAY CUTS IN THE MOST EXPENSIVE COST OF LIVING VENUE IN THE USA, SEND THEIR NAMES C/O TO UHAD.

  212. tom-warriornation November 1, 2015 9:26 pm

Since we are starting a new era in UH Football, can we start a new tradition of waving green towels on our road games? And of course, everyone wear green UH gear or anything green.

This great “visual effect” should pump up our players; and we all know that football is a very emotional game–especially if the game is very close in the 4th quarter. Let’s do this starting at UNLV everyone!!!

  213. 808 November 1, 2015 9:32 pm

    #195,
ESPN should get rid of the bozo Gary Dickman.. fan phones is a joke.. boycott that until they put josh pacheco there.. he is the only one with some kahones’
    ——————————————————-
Funny you say that. It always sounds like he always plays devil’s advocate to a position a caller takes.

Whenever a caller brings up a good point, he presents an opposite point of view. If UH kept Chow for a 5th year, he probably would agree with the decision made by UH even though if the fan base dwindles to under 10k.

  214. kimo browner November 1, 2015 9:33 pm

#212. great idea. You will stand out in contrast to all the empty seats.

  215. 808warriorfan November 1, 2015 9:41 pm

#213 … “808” … JOSH PACHECO … are you out of your XXXX-ing mind ??? That Colin Cowherd “wannabe” ??? The only time I don’t listen to 1420 AM is when that idiot is on the air …

  216. Jeezy33 November 1, 2015 9:44 pm

    153. That is not how it played out. That’s how the public thinks it played out but not true. Naeole isn’t even the coach that recruited Kapoi. It was Hawaii that stripped the scholarship and said you can grey shirt. Kapoi wanted to come to Hawaii even with the Wisconsin offer.

  217. 808 November 1, 2015 9:45 pm

Perhaps you should read my post again. I was referring to post 195 in regards to Gary Dickman.

  218. 808warriorfan November 1, 2015 9:49 pm

#196 … “neverlearn” … if you don’t like Hawaii why don’t you leave … The GOP is just as corrupt … Aloha means Good bye

  219. 808warriorfan November 1, 2015 9:51 pm

#191 … Warrior NY … I agree 100% … that’s why JJ was successful … now is that offense still viable is the question …

  220. Gobows November 1, 2015 9:54 pm

I wouldn’t want to be the one deciding on a new Coach. Make a wrong decision again and you’ll be the most hated person in Hawaii. Or you’ll be called a dumb dumb.

  221. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 9:56 pm

Interesting note written by I. Maisel (ESPN)

    3. In his firing Sunday by Hawaii, as with most of his coaching career, Norm Chow avoided the spotlight. But let’s pause in our praise of Frank Beamer and acknowledge Chow, one of the best position coaches of the last 40 years. Chow became known as an offensive guru at BYU under LaVell Edwards, and then at USC with Pete Carroll. He coached Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart in their Heisman seasons. When Chow finally became a rookie head coach at age 65, Hawaii offered him meager resources and not a lot of talent. He won 10 games, and I’m not sure that Carroll would have won more.

  222. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 10:01 pm

    205…

Not sure if Cav could make it as a HC. Most high energy, super excitable guys like that flame out after a few years.

There’s only so much rah-rah high fives & headbutts guys can take before it gets tuned out. Only Pete Carroll has mastered that style, but, he has always had NFL caliber assistants surrounding him.

  223. hitman November 1, 2015 10:04 pm

would be nice to see if could we the fans of UH FOOTBALL pack the aloha stadium for one of the last home game !!

  224. nomu November 1, 2015 10:06 pm

Like Naole’s no nonsense attitude and his concern about his fellow coaches. Let’s get a win at UNLV.

  225. Former UH Athlete November 1, 2015 10:07 pm

GD is the Skip Bayless of ESPN 1420. And that’s not a compliment, and he’s not good at it. Which is both sad and funny.

  226. cocobean November 1, 2015 10:10 pm

I think we are lucky to have Dave Matlin. He’s someone who gave up a lot to move here. No job lined up. Just a desire to a chance to live and sink his roots here. He parlayed a low rung job in the athletic department to head man of the Hawaii Bowl and Diamond Head Classic. In his position of head man he’s made executive decisions, nurtured a good working relationship with ESPN, and made contacts with many athletic departments as inviter and host.

I think he handled the Chow situation in the best possible manner. He didn’t give into the growing public sentiment for Chow’s head. He didn’t tip his hand prematurely. He took into consideration the players genuine affection for Chow and for the future of the assistants. He gave Chow the opportunity to turn things around. He acted quickly and respectfully once a losing season was insured. I liked that he set a short job posting period with the caveat they could roll the search process as needed.

Finally the point I wanted to make is I trust Matlin to make the right choice. I don’t think he is rubber stamp AD who will give into outside pressure. I think he’ll listen to everyone worth listening to but in the end he’ll put his job on the line a go with who he feels is the best candidate. He did it with the Ganot hire.

  227. 808 November 1, 2015 10:14 pm

#225, yes, I agree about GD of 1420 espn. That’s why when I read post #195, I had to laugh a little. The thing is, is that the best espn 1420 has to offer?

  228. kev-1 November 1, 2015 10:22 pm

I remember an episode of Leahey and Leahey (before it was pau) where they interviewed JJ. They were asking him about coaching again, particularly in Hawaii. He, of course, was p/c and said “no, that would mean Norm’s not here anymore,” or something like that.

THEN, he dropped a little nugget that I found extremely interesting. He said that he would like to get back into coaching because he has some new ideas and new things he wanted to try. Anyone else catch that?

Just pointing this out for those of you that think JJ has nothing new to offer.

  229. Paper Crane November 1, 2015 10:25 pm

So why not like it’s all over with the old school and like closing the books on this bitter sweet era;…like Coach Chow said it’s about them 65 players not him per say
and right,..whoever takes over it’s still about them 65 players;…good luck and god bless you and yours.

  230. kev-1 November 1, 2015 10:25 pm

#221 … Ivan Maisel totally blasted UH with that comment, claiming that even Pete Carroll wouldn’t be able to win in Hawaii. Maybe he needs to do a bit more homework to realize that Hawaii has not been as bad as it has been under Chow for a long time. HE WON LESS THAN HIS PREDECESSORS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enough with the BS already.

  231. DONT November 1, 2015 11:05 pm

Please NO JUNE JONES! He is aging like NORM CHOW and he had a losing record at SMU with Tom Mason. The proof is all in the record! Bring in someone NEW and refreshing!!!!

  232. obachan November 1, 2015 11:24 pm

I hope DAVE ARANDA tosses his hat into the ring. His defensive unit loves playing for him and he utilizes an aggressive 3-4 defense; the type of attacking defense that Hawaii fans love. Today’s college game requires a coach with a lot of energy and commitment to game preparation which Aranda excels at. Problem is don’t know whether it’s worth it to him to leave the Big Ten and return to UH.

  233. PIAA Doris November 2, 2015 1:34 am

So I was washing windows and I got a call from a coach on the east coast asking me if I knew the AD and did I have a number, he wanted to put in for the job. I asked what job …the only time I didn’t have my phone or computer in front of me, the Chow story came out. Then I got 6 more calls/texts from Pac12, MWC and others asking me if I knew the AD’s #. I do, but I did not give out his cell, I told them to check the UH website…unless they want to pay me as their agent, I’m not giving Daves # out to anyone! He wouldn’t be very happy “hi, this is Coach X, I got your number from Doris”. Not happening.

  234. Tempmanoa November 2, 2015 2:59 am

June totally rebuilt the program at SMU and was successful until his last two years there in 2013 and 2014 and he quit in 2015. His problems in 2013 and 2014 come from SMU’s increasing the level of competition to attempt to make a BCS bowl– it was like this year’s schedule for UH without the travel– playing the best teams in Texas–Baylor, TCU, Texas A&M, and Houston. As to criticism of JJ’s offense, it has been proven wrong by the recent success of offenses just like it– you can turn on college games and NFL games and see teams in formations without the tight end and only a running back to block and four wide receivers running either Air Raid or adjusting routes. June is a guy who has changed his offense to match talent– remember when June first came here he had one and two tight ends, the QB was under center a lot, and he was one of the first to employ the H Back or hybrid back– he changed the offense to fit our talent.

  235. Maddog50 November 2, 2015 4:16 am

All do the names being thrown out some are really interesting! I guess it boils down to who applys and what we intend to provide in terms of support. I realize that Dave M has a challenge but also realize he is a bright educated and succinct guy. He handled himself extremely well against that so-called tree of owls who tried to twist him up last week. He is gonna do the right thing. And again you have to be able to recruit and draw regionally raise money and engage the public. Better be good behind the mic. It takes a lot to be successful in this role and the last 3 put of 4 coaches at UH prove this-Coach Naoele had some interesting things to say regarding injured players. He’s saying there a difference between injured and hurt-I have suspected this all along regarding some guys not going and others going at all costs. It breeds discontent when you know a guy who is expected to play is really just finding an excuse not to. To summarize this is called bullshit! You are either a player or your not period. I think we have an awful lot of good ones and it will prove out over the next few weeks-by the way if the starting QB is not getting result by the end of a quarter or so and we seem headed down the same path time to switch brands-for my two cents I would like IW who played at NM to get more than a fair shot. If you intend torun Baileys offense to any degree you have to have a mobile/running Quarterback. Would love to see with 4 games left yes one more time Justin Vele! Go Warriors!!!!!

  236. sofaking_blk November 2, 2015 5:19 am

We need to bring in the best coach available, not the best coach with “Hawaii Ties” but the best coach PERIOD!!!!

  237. Buffoman November 2, 2015 5:32 am

Back to my question. If the Jones offense is so terrific and he was successful at his previous stop, why hasn’t his name come up in coaching vacancies since he left SMU? Didn’t he want the ASU job?

What if Coach Naeole is successful? Would he be considered?

  238. Old School Dave November 2, 2015 5:47 am

Would hate to have the application tossed out of a young, successful FCS head coach, possibly a young “Urban Meyer type,” who’s intrigued with the challenge of coaching at UH, just because he has no “Hawaii Connection.” Here we go again. That’s why things don’t chance here.

  239. Old School Dave November 2, 2015 5:55 am

That should be, “That’s why things don’t change here.” HNN, practically awarding the UH job to either Jones or Miano.

  240. cappie the dog November 2, 2015 5:57 am

    213.

    Gary Dickman is competent.

    Not, great, not horrible.

But the one thing I don’t like about his show is when a caller makes some comment, he’ll put them on the spot by saying that he borrowed the quote from one of the national radio programs.

I like Chris Hart’s schtick that he doesn’t do any preparation for the show.

This sort of irreverence reminds me of “The Dan LeBatard Show”.

Dan LeBatard gets so much vitriol from viewers and listeners, he had to explain the concept of his show last week.

“It’s a spoof,” he said, or in other words, it’s self-aware anarchy against the conventions of the format.

LeBatard once spent an entire segment on washing his face with the shampoo that trickles down from his hair.

I think “Sports Animals” is decent.

But yes, Josh Pacheco is talented, and has the potential to move to a bigger market if he so chooses.

I was in total awe when Artie Wilson had Willie Mays on his “On Point” show. He is so much more interesting as a radio host than a color commentator. I like that Thomas Louden is a regular caller. Louden was this former kindergartner’s idol on the courts, in the mean streets of Kaimuki.

Jeff Portnoy and Jackson Wheeler are my favorites(outside of Bobby Curran). They strike the same blend of humor, cynicism, and fandom that I carry when I go to all the games.

When Brandon Spearman misses a dunk by jamming the ball against the front of the rim from the baseline. You mourn the two points. But you also laugh hysterically to the irritation of the people sitting in front of you.

    C’mon, it’s only a game.

First world problem: My sports team isn’t doing well.

You laugh so you don’t cry.

  241. cappie the dog November 2, 2015 6:02 am

    235.

I second the notion of hiring the Eastern Washington head coach.

Do you think Chris Bohl would have been interested in the Hawaii vacancy had he not chosen Wyoming?

I was such a huge Bohl fan after I saw North Dakota State march down the field in a 17-play drive to go ahead of Kansas State and win.

I thought that was the second most impressive win for the FCS over a FBS school.

  242. oneseason November 2, 2015 6:09 am

Had the New Mexico and Nevada losses not occurred, it seems to me things could have turned out a lot worse for UH football. Those seemed like very winnable games, and winning even both of them would not have indicated to me that Coach Chow had turned the corner. With the easiest part of the season coming up, and had Chow been at 3-6 or 4-5, it would have been harder to justify making a coaching change.

  243. cappie the dog November 2, 2015 6:12 am

    No more Grantland.

    C’mon, Star-Advertiser.

Wesley Morris is out of a job.

Let’s boost up the art pages.

  244. cappie the dog November 2, 2015 6:14 am

    239.

If you take this idea one step further, you have yourself a conspiracy theory.

  245. Buffoman November 2, 2015 6:14 am

“235 I believe that to do the best for the student athlete and institution, the AD, has to consider all potential applicants and not limit himself. There are “favorite sons” who are interested, but to your point and my question a complete and unbiased vetting needs to be done to find who may be best. It may not be popular but leaders are not put in the position to win popularity contests. They are there to make hard decisions that are well thought through that best meets the mission of, in this case the institution.

  246. cappie the dog November 2, 2015 6:17 am

    Good luck, Coach Naeole.

  247. Warrior Fan November 2, 2015 6:30 am

I just hope we pick the best coach out there, not necessarily someone with Hawaii ties, but the best candidate. A coach who is up to the challenge to turn our program around. Maybe Maa Tanuvasa, who’s on Millilani’s coaching staff…. with also the head coach of Kahuku. Head coach at Kahuku coached with a lot of PAC-12 schools and well.. we all know about Maa Tanuvasa’s success in his career. I hope we don’t go back to the JJ/Miano/Rolo era.. those days are gone. we need to move forward, we need some coaches who can recruit, and I think with those 2 guys I mentioned, could possibly be good candidates to represent our team. also, hopefully we get rid of the Rainbow Warriors and go back to the Warriors, just my opinion. Regardless who we get, i’ll always support our team! Go Warriors!

  248. Come on, Man! November 2, 2015 6:40 am

“Back to my question. If the Jones offense is so terrific and he was successful at his previous stop, why hasn’t his name come up in coaching vacancies since he left SMU? Didn’t he want the ASU job?”

idk. there are a lot of reasons why a coach wouldn’t be considered a candidate for a head coaching position. maybe june jones isn’t actively searching for a job. maybe schools view him as a niche coach and the boosters and search commitees (because you guys know that UH isn’t the only school that uses a search committee to find a new coach, right?) has the same preconceived notions of the run and shoot being a gimmick/system oriented offense and JJ as being a good coach for a certain niche. maybe they see that june jones doesn’t hit the recruiting trail hard enough and they question whether he would have the energy and dedication for their team (because it’s not like june is a young man anymore).

maybe they don’t like the offense, stylistically. maybe people just don’t like him, period. there’s all kinds of reasons and most of them probably aren’t technical football related reasons.

  249. what the ? November 2, 2015 6:46 am

Naeole was the wrong choice, If there was anyone else on the staff that could have taken over they would have but he was all there was. He could not even make it through his first press conference without being censored twice. His idea of coaching is belittling and bullying his players. Did we all forget he was ready to quit on the team earlier this year? Was just going to walk away!!!
For all the losses on the field…Coach Chow was good to the players. Treated them right, just could not teach them to win.

  250. Hank November 2, 2015 6:56 am

    “The cupboard is bare…”

Sheez …. yeah, let’s stomp on them when they are down. I so totally disagree with this, and feel that we have enough talent to win out with adjustments that need to be made by the coaching staff. I think Naeole’s going to do just fine.

  251. 3-Prong November 2, 2015 6:57 am

According to BC this morning, Matlin to forego Selection Committee method of obtaining a recommended replacement. He will instead have a 4 Person advisory committee and he personally will select the new coach. Hallelujah!

Remember Dave, the name rhymes with Tune Tones… Don’t mess this up. hehe

  252. 3-Prong November 2, 2015 6:59 am

Hmmm. JJ as HC, Miano as DC, Rolo as OC. I have a dream!

  253. oldtimer808 November 2, 2015 7:00 am

Kimo Browner I may have not agreed with you many times but I do agree with you on bringing June Jones for another stint as our coach. He loves Hawaii and is not looking to go any where else. I believe he has recharged and excited to bring some new ideas to the table. I know there are fans who are not fans of JJ for leaving for SMU but you cannot discount his ability to coach. If UH wants to bring the fans back to Aloha Stadium than bringing back JJ would accomplish that task.

  254. el burro sabio November 2, 2015 7:02 am

FUHA this is what I was getting at last night. From ST’s story today:

But Chow’s tenure featured two staff overhauls. The protocol for firing a head coach is also to release the assistants. But when McMackin was let go, the assistants were retained, forcing Chow to fire coaches he had not hired. He retained only Tony Tuioti, then reassigned him from defensive line to linebackers.

  255. kakaako kid November 2, 2015 7:04 am

UH should hire The Other Guy. He seems to always be the fan favorite around here.

  256. oldtimer808 November 2, 2015 7:04 am

#248 good to hear about time good sense prevails.

  257. graham November 2, 2015 7:14 am

Rich Miano would not get a top high school head coaching job. The fact that people want him is a joke. What happens if Naeole does a good job. Any chance he will be considered? Bring in Timmy Chang to run to offense.

  258. Casual Observer November 2, 2015 7:14 am

Another frustrating loss leaving frustrated fans. This UH team was supposedly Chow’s best with talent and depth on both sides. Yet, the inability to perform offensively, not just to score, but to sustain drives is a big puzzler especially at mid season when offenses start to click with playing experience. Another big puzzler is why a coaching staff with so many years of experience and winning backgrounds is unable to win more often. And finally, so man fans wanted Chow to succeed as a local person, first asian head coach, etc., but it wasn’t meant to be.

  259. Buffoman November 2, 2015 7:23 am

Like “Cappie” and Hank, I’d like to see Chris successful. Wouldn’t it make discussion interesting if he was wildly successful in the remaining games and expressed an interest in being considered? Coach Naeole is a young unknown entity in the field. I’d like to be pleasantly surprised.

  260. Balko November 2, 2015 7:30 am

Got to wonder how bitter Rich Miano will be if he is passed over again in the head coach hiring.

  261. Maddog50 November 2, 2015 7:32 am

So here we go again with the money trap. It’s gonna cost this and gonna cost that-always one sided ignoring what UHFB does for the economy. Overall the AD pumps 60+ million annually into the system. Always thinking small with small thoughts.
Now here is something else-seems an awful lot of people wanted a coaching change. So we have an interim Coach, certainly an accomplished man, with local identity. Three home games left let’s see what sort of turnout we get for those dates. Win or lose Coach Naeole will get the most out of this roster-I can only be at UNLV but sure wish I could see the remaining 3. The program and the players have my support always and certainly now when needed the most! GO WARRIORS!!!!

  262. Shoko November 2, 2015 7:38 am

Interesting interview with Naeole. I think there might be some added entertainment value on the sideline the next four games. Just hope he remembers he can’t physically abuse his players if they make a mistake on the field.

  263. Dennis Halloran November 2, 2015 7:44 am

Thanks Norm for all your efforts. AD should make the next HC pick. That is his job

  264. Ipu Man November 2, 2015 7:44 am

Hope coach Naeole doesn’t make the mistake of being
more tough on his players more than before. The son
of King Solomon did that and failed miserably.
Just show the players some love…and that includes
the guys on the bench. Let them play and give their
hearts out. Go seniors! Go juniors! Go Sophomores!
    Go freshmen! Go Warriors!

  265. 3-Prong November 2, 2015 8:03 am

I have heard that the UH HC job is Miano’s “Dream Job” but I would guess that he would settle for the DC job under the right person. I heard he no longer has his longshoreman job that he left Kaiser for. His recruiting skills are well established.

  266. H-Man November 2, 2015 8:06 am

I thought a bachelor’s degree was the minimum requirement to be a head coach at the university. Len Sakata does not have his bachelor’s so did not qualify. Some people asked that administration waiver the requirement but was denied.

Former UH Athlete#172, you are correct. Assistant coaches are on 1-year contracts. You don’t fire them; you just don’t renew their contracts.

Regarding June Jones as the next coach, the manner in which he left SMU raises a red flag. And his explanation that he needed a break from coaching raises an even bigger red flag.

  267. Makai November 2, 2015 8:21 am

Man I keep getting in these debates in my own head about Rich Miano.

Pros: Ultimate Rainbow Warrior this guy bleeds green, NFL experience, great recruiter and development of talent, former warrior coach and knows how UH works.

Cons: no real coaching experience outside of Hawaii, reputation among high school coaches after Kaiser, been away from the college game for a few years, no HC experience besides interim title after Mac fired.

I don’t know if he’s ready. A few years away as a DC on the mainland might have helped his resume and cause.

  268. H-Man November 2, 2015 8:22 am

Old School Dave #151, I believe Curran’s comment was based on information that the salary for the next HC would not be higher than $400K. A salary higher than $400K requires BoR approval. It’s ploy to speed up the approval process which is a minimum of 24 days when the BoR is in the loop. There are other options to increase the head coaches salary. It’s just the official base will not be greater than the $400K.

  269. Daves Rearend November 2, 2015 8:29 am

I am the Norm Chow of media writers.

  270. mytake November 2, 2015 8:32 am

The big question is who are the 4 advisors to the AD. Is this a selection committee by a different name? Are they football people?

  271. Ipu Man November 2, 2015 8:37 am

Naming a young and upcoming person as UH coach would not
excite (sell tickets) fans. Maybe Matlin could hire himself at
zero salary and hire Jones as offensive coordinator and raise
the salaries of all the other coaches…

  272. FearGod November 2, 2015 8:38 am

So all the JJ haters would get Jones under a one year contract…

I like the young and up and coming selection. I believe Dick Tomey was a lb coach at UCLA when UH picked him. Even better to get a HC from a FCS school. JJ and Miano have their positives but, they also have their negatives.

So…who would you like as coach, ST?

  276. sofaking_blk November 2, 2015 8:48 am

    Beau Baldwin- HC, E. Washington
    Kindall Briles- OC, Baylor

Today’s college football demands being able to score a lot of points. Good, top tier teams are able to score 35 + points per game. Don’t have to be a Power 5 team. Look at Houston, Memphis, Western Kentucky, Boise St., Appalaccian St., Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Toledo, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, etc. When Hawaii beat Miami Ohio and Ben Roethlisberger, 53-52 now that is exciting. When Rolo threw 8 Tds that was exciting. Gotta score man. At least you got a chance.

I want an offensive coach for Head Coach. JJ has been watching and knows what works. He’s probably re-energized.

Hmmmn, a 4 person committee. This is my proposed 4 person committee:

Bob Wagner (it would be a nice olive branch from UH to him, and he has invaluable institutional knowledge)

Dave Shoji (no one has a longer tenure and knows more about the upper/lower campus politics than he)

San Moku ( he holds a tie to all former players as a starter in the 80s, and equally important, he holds a VP position at a university–HPU)

Carrie Okinaga (UH VP general counsel—you goin need her signature, one way or the other, at the end of the day).

There you have it, the dream team….lol

Hmmmn, a 4 person committee??? This is my proposed 4 person committee:

Bob Wagner (it would be a nice olive branch from UH-Manoa to him, and he has invaluable institutional knowledge)

Dave Shoji (no one has a longer tenure as a coach, or more success, and he knows more about the upper/lower campus politics than anyone else)

San Moku ( he holds a tie to all former players as a starter in the 80s, and equally important, he holds a VP position at a local university–HPU)

Carrie Okinaga (UH VP general counsel—you goin need her signature, one way or the other, at the end of the day, and we need a women’s touch).

There you go, the dream team….lol

If we are only willing to pay $400,000 or less for our next HC, I guarantee I will be renewing my season tickets and attending as many home and even away games as possible to enjoy the final years of Hawaii as a Division 1 program.
