Sometimes in life, we try and fail. Norm put his best foot forward and simply came up wanting. As a fan, I appreciate his efforts and wish him luck on the next chapter of his coaching career — or retirement.

Naeole and Gouveia are the only interim coaches that i think the players can rally around. I expect the team to play with pride the remainder of the season.

What I am not optimistic about is that the selection of the next head coach will be timely and to the fans’ liking. I hope the UH administration proves myself and the fans wrong — for once.

All right, then…a new beginning that is long overdue.

I have a feeling JJ will be the guy based on his past history of turning the program around and leading us to the highest Heights the program has ever seen..add to that his history with the Hawaii Bowl..I can see it happening I just hope this time around he realizes how important recruiting is…

UH needs a young and experienced head coach with current success and a winning record. There are many to choose from at the FCS (D-IAA) level who would be interested in UH and the challenges. The new coach has to be fanatical about recruiting. They also need to increase the salaries of the coordinators and assistants in order to attract quality coaches who are good teachers.

21. Knowing Matlin gave Ganot a chance when he probably wasn’t the best candidate, I def see Rolo being on top of his list at a cheaper price. I wouldn’t go that route but it seems likely. In that scenario, I do agree Abe would be kept and that would be excellent. Abe is going to be a good coach. Only current coach I know of hitting the recruiting scene hard even though it was likely chow was going to be fired at some point

16. The cupboard is bare. We got destroyed by Air Force back ups running simple dive up the middle over and over. Our WRs are bad. New coach is going to have to hit big on recruits right away. We have no D line besides KT who will be a senior. We have no Qbs being developed besides Zwahlen because we went the transfer route every year and failed to recruit high school Qbs.

I fully expect everyone who posted here (or anywhere, FTM) that the Former HC was the problem to now buy a ticket to watch the next home game.

It’s the most logical way to get general fans back interested and excited in the program. The general public won’t get excited for anyone else… Let’s bury the hatchet and play an exciting brand of football again with those two at the helm…

With the progression of FANTASY SPORTS in the past few years, Hawaii players would have INSTANT national recognition if we go back to a R&S type system… Has the game changed that much in the past 5 years when we had 3 top ten receivers in the nation in terms of statistics??? People on the East Coast would stay up very late to watch the outcomes of these games…

Chow recruited some talent on the offensive side with Ursua, Stubblefield, Collie, Zwahlen, Ewaliko, Bernard, Etc….And the defensive side has some as well.

We have a good base of players…Granted, a lot of them are still young players…but we have some good ones…unlike when Chow took over for Mac and their was nothing, except for maybe Davis (whose at Cal), Dew, Clarke and Yap.

I am already getting excited because I feel these young offensive players we have will fit into Coach Jones system and they will be used in the right way.

Didn’t June Jones have a role in Tom Mason becoming UH’s DC? I think that if June Jones were hired, again, he’d probably retain Mason.

No to Brady Hoke, no hoke-pokey. He took five years to turn around Ball State, although only one at San Diego St, but he stayed there only two years.

When Chow was hired, didn’t (former) AD Jim Donovan recommend someone else but was overridden? I’ll wait to see who applies before commenting on a preference. Just hoping the UH opening attracts a lot of candidates. Right now, I am a bit pessimistic because the many problems within the UH system may be a significant deterrent to attract a good field of candidates.

Well, there are 4 remaining games to play. It will be interesting to see what OC Don Bailey has up his sleeve for UNLV. No more questions about how much control he has over the offense. Seniors playing for pride. Underclassmen playing for now and next season, along with being evaluated by the new coaching staff. Assistants, perhaps, making an impression about possibly being retained by the new coach? Could UH go 4-0? Ikaika or Max (or even Beau Rielly) at QB?

Yup, Dino is not coming–he just improved to 6-2, and will be in the Big12 or even SEC, next year. If you wanted to be in the game, you will need to basically triple Chows base, and that’s not going to happen.

Just hope they have no more search committee members for the new coach who head hospitals, hotels, insurance companies, public service organizations, and other entities not tied to division I college athletics.

I hope it is not June Jones. I still remember him dumping us for SMU, then trying to dump SMU for ASU. The whole act about being torn about leaving only to find out the daggers were in hand a long time prior. The ONLY plus I see about hiring Jones is he might be willing to accept a salary close to that of his top assistants and be willing to mentor a coach for the future. Let us face it, Jones is not a young man and building long term is preferred. The other option is to review all applicants and select the one the AD feels offers the best chance at success. Genius concept.
No doubt Coach Chow had a lot on his plate on and off camera. When the dust settles, I think he will look back and appreciate the opportunity to be a DI head coach.

I think that Dino Baber’s DC, Kim McCloud will also move on with him to a Power-5 school when that happens, likely soon. McCloud who played at UH and coached at Kaiser High, has been with Babers from back at Baylor, Eastern Illinois, and now Bowling Green (6-2).

The next head coach needs to be able too recruit the local talent and keep them home, and not let them go too the Pac-12 and etc….
Or if the coach from Colorado, Mike Macintyre is dismissed maybe him?
He turned SJSU around quickly.

The least risk is to hire June Jones.

1) He may work for less, wanting to have his assistance paid more.

2) If not collecting state retirement he may need 2 more years which will increase his retirement benefit and not looking for another place to coach like a up and coming coach.

3) Knows the shortcoming of the UH system and can work with it.

4) Has a coaching pipeline that he can assemble that will understand Hawaii and the type of players willing to play here.

5) Will help again with national exposure. ESPN will cover the saga of June returning to Hawaii. Free publicity that right now an up and coming younger coach will not bring.

6) Players will play for him, a players coach and he knows how to motivate, although the motivation factor was lost at the Sugar Bowl due to he already had himself out the door to SMU. Blame the administration for this for not extending his contract before the start of his final year. That was another blunder.

7) May help rejuvenate donations sorely needed for the football program.

8) Bring an exciting brand of play back that will score points and increase next year’s season ticket purchases.

9) His goal will probably be to revive the program over 3-5 years with the idea of passing the torch to coaches that will maintain the continuity who will have the Hawaiian way of life in their hearts.

I remember when Norm first got the job and he was overwhelmed with the “non-coaching” part of the job (paper, paper, paper). He didn’t expect it and whoever comes in better have the experience of dealing with “da hui”, bench jockeys and naysayers.

Chow may have been an academian but definitely not HC material. Should never have been given five year deal.

I don’t feel sorry for his own demise, as it was he who has taken us to new lows, while never taking individual responsibility for any losses. His use of “we” may have been honorable in his mind, it is solely his duty to take responsibility for his errors in coaching, which he made much more than he should have been able to make.

Let’s face it, his release has long been overdue.

Beau Baldwin’s teams at FCS Eastern Washington have given fits to teams like UW, Oregon, and Oregon State. He’s a proven winner at that level, in the Big Sky, and has a National Championship to his credit. He was mentioned as a candidate for the Oregon State job last year. His offense would fit someone like an Ikaika Woolsey (see Vernon Adams, former EWU QB, now at Oregon). I think he earns something like $275,000 at EWU. Coaches like him are used to not having a lot at that level, but are creative, and can coach up their players. Interesting tidbit in that former UH head coach Dave Holmes came from EWU when they were in the NAIA in the late 60s.

The well connected are using their leverage to be on the seach committee as we speak. Nothing like a committee made up of CEO’s of a local engineering and, electric co. Throw in a law firm partner and make sure you have an Iolani and Punahou grad. Also make sure a Christian based religion, preferably Mormon is represented. Now were ready to pick a few candidates to present to the AD.

I don’t see 1 position of strength where we are stocked for the future besides safety and maybe LB. Trayvon Henderson and Daniel Lewis have 2 years left. Malachi Mageo and Solomom Matautia are just FR at LB. we are weak in the trenches ok both sides and weak at skill position. No Rbs, below average WRs, 1 QB. In comparison, during run n shoot era, we would be 6 deep at QB where our walk ons were better than our current qbs on scholarship. Moniz, Shane Austin, and Steele Jantz all walked on and are better than any of our qbs.

Wow, at 5:50 pm on yesterday’s post I hoped for “Chow relieved of his HC duties”. Great to hear that finally something of intelligence has come from Manoa athletics. If this was Maitlin’s call, I applaude him emphatically! This certainly does not ensure success but it is a move in the right direction for the rest of the season and optimistically next year. Next order of business is get the job opening posted ASAP to start the hiring process. Because of State hiring protocol, hiring coaches is always a lengthy process. Best to get on immediately.

Unfortunately, the best candidates won’t be available until the regular season ends because they are still working with their current teams. Granted, most coaching candidates have agents and there’s nothing slowing those guys down from getting the applications ready for their clients.

I know it’s going to be next to impossible based on the competence level of the people running UH, but UH needs to announce the next coach before the December 14, 2015 through January 13, 2016 dead period. That way, the coach can try to assemble his staff during the dead period and not lose lose recruiting time.

For the folks that know the inside baseball, they realize the biggest problem with this position, is the institutional support, both from a monetray and mission level. To consider this job, without that consideration, is a fools errand…e.g. You need to have your eyes wide open with this job.

If I assume every verbal commit is binding, then Jordan Agasiva would be our starting RT right now. Lots of things happen that we don’t know about.

Yeah I get players quit. But we’ve been getting dominated. I don’t care what we did in our non conference schedule. Those teams have us vanilla looks. Colorado did run the ball on us. The D line that is the future has been getting smoked by New Mexico, Nevada, Sdsu, Boise, and Air Force. That’s what matters.

I look forward to seeing what our defense looks like next week. The time of possession for UH in the first quarter was 3.9 minutes and 4.4 minutes in the second quarter. The UH defense had to play almost 22 minutes in the first half alone.

UH needs to make Dec 14 a priority date for hiring he next coach.

Priority 2 would be to not consider aging career assistants with no relevant HC experience as candidates for the job.

UH went this route twice in a row with very poor results.

So, before anyone goes off and start scrambling for a new coach, we need to take a look at the house we have for the new coach to live and thrive in. If we don’t we’re gonna right back here three years from now kicking out another coach and looking for another one.

Before we start soliciting more money from the state and the general public, the powers that be need to really take a serious look at where and how they want the entire program to move forward. They need to establish a vision and set goals to attain and achieve. Simply hiring a new head coach and hoping for a miracle isn’t gonna cut it.

Matlin needs to take a good look at himself first and foremost. Will he be just another AD that maintains status quo like so many before him? Or will he have the balls to bust down doors and execute a vision that changes the programs course towards a prosperous future…

If he’s up to the challenge, Matlin needs to grow some bull headed Stan Sheriff balls and develop Governor Burns vision and take this fledging program to new heights.

Jeezy33, are you eligible to be a recruiter? You seem to be a good evaluator. Or, you can feed the information to a coach who can follow up. I agree, we need sorely help on the DL and OL, but we need a bunch of playmakers too. In short, we need everything. We need good evaluators for walk ons too.

Matlin has proved to me that he does not make good decisions. The three listed are a joke. Chow is better. At least he was a decent man.

I will say that Rich did a very solid job on the walk-on side of the program, where almost every year there were at least 2-3 starters coming from those ranks…

While I think the move was overdue, I wish Norm Chow the best. Sometimes things simply don’t work out.

Not too sure on Miano as HC. Only because he’s been out of the college coaching game for a while now.

I’d rather have a guy who’s been eating, drinking, and breathing game film and recruiting the past few years. I’m a little hesitant to give the keys to somebody who’s in the booth, doing camps, and other fun projects not named coaching.

We got what we wished for now its time for everyone to show their support for the rest of the season. Even teams like mine can turn it around and have a good season with the right guidance. Matlin take your time and make the right decision for all of our sakes. Can’t wait for Mondays sports animals for their reaction for this and now Gary D has to admit Raiders are better than Jets.

My hope for the rest of this season is that Naeole can drill home the fact to the non-seniors is that they need to continue to give full effort because the next coach will be watching the film, evaluating the returning scholarship players to see what he has to work with, and eventually determining if he needs to reallocate scholarships for his type of players, especially so if there will be a major offensive style change.

This is what we as fans have been waiting for. Now it’s time to regroup and finish out the season in a winning note. We have the talent, just need to put things together and play like Warriors!!

How can you say that JJ offense hasn’t worked since 2007; then say in the next paragraph that the only reason Rolo’s 2010 team was good was because he inherited JJ’s players? I’m a little confused…

Rolo tweaked the offense after JJ left, it wasn’t really JJ’s RnS. Fewer screens, shovel pass was seldomly used, less pre-snap motion. Those were the observable differences. The play calling flow didn’t have the same touch when Rolo was calling the plays, but I attribute that to Rolo being green as an OC.

JJ’s RnS looked awful the past couple years at SMU and surprisingly he never had any sustained success at QB. It was a revolving door at the #1 QB spot until Gilbert was there, but he underperformed much like Wittek has been for UH.

Tonight i would like to suggest to all God’s people who love this team to pray for them and to pray for the AD as he leads this search for a new coach because we know He is in control of all things no matter who the coach is.

Sure JJ will sell some tickets, but a lot has changed since he was here. Politics and leadership within the university are a lot worse now than when JJ was here.

UH and JJ would need to mend some serious wounds before they start talking again. As ST mentioned it’s not like JJ doesn’t have an ego.

I really don’t have any suggestions for next HC. Its a really complex problem with a lot of limiting factors.

Niumatololo is an interesting name I’ve heard, but I just don’t think a triple option offense has a high enough ceiling to contend for conference championships year in and year out even when things are going well.

Rich Miano, Nick Rolo “Revenge” Rolovich and of course JJ are potential candidates. Of course, lets not forget JJ was a complete disaster at SMU. Ok, an 85% disaster at SMU. Some people say JJ didn’t know how to recruit but he actually did. He picked up Colt Brennan and Devon Bess straight out of incarceration in Colorado and Cali respectively. A rock solid O and D line can be picked up right out of Halawa. Good coaches know this. Add a few Red Raiders at Kahuku and we’ll be back to another victory at the Sugar Bowl and undefeated season. Yeah baby!!! Oh…. wait…..

I was at the game running down our starters. We have a fairly young team on offense and a lot of returning experience on defense. Ursua heads a crop of red shirts that should be in the mix next year. The cupboard in my opinion is more full then the cupboard chow inherited.

I was disappointed Chow and Co. Didn’t make full use of all the ingredients they had available. They couldn’t figure out a way to get Ewaliko at least 4 touches a game on offense. Last night we handed off to our rbs only six times. they were asked to block the rest of the time. Disappointed they didn’t have draw,s, shovel passes, or short routes to make better use of them. The coaches would have been better off having someone like Vele in they’re place. A jack of all trades, primary a blocker who can occasionally run the ball or run routes. In my opinion it’s been a season long thing in keeping a short list of players who are writteninto the offensive game plan.

Chad Morris

Who cares that Morris is struggling in his first year at SMU, which was a complete mess when he arrived? He’s one of the best offensive minds in the game, the architect of Clemson’s high-powered attacks from 2011-2014. And he’s going to be an outstanding head coach. Plus, he knows the ACC terrain as well as the recruiting landscape in the Mid-Atlantic region. Morris is the guy who developed Tajh Boyd and helped get Deshaun Watson to Death Valley.

Like anything else, to be a winner in college football you have to have a good QB that makes plays and moves the chains and scores touchdowns. That’s #1. Then find solid players to complement the other positions. Graham, Wittek, Woolsey. Nope. Schroeder got better over time, but he was bad in the beginning and he got hurt too. Moniz did well, but he got hurt too. Colt was the best, Timmy was good. Jason Whieldon was pretty good. Tyler Graunke was good until he had some problems, Dan Robinson was good, Rolo came on after a slow start. Alexander was doing good until that gruesome injury. So we still have Woolsey, Reilly, and Zwahlen. At this point Wittek is not doing the job. Neither is Ikaika. Try Reilly to see what he can do. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t, but find out under fire. Save Zwahlen’s redshirt and hope Milton is still committed to UH. Look for 2 more HS QBs and maybe an established good JC QB ready to play.

My attempt to post about 5 hrs ago bout the relieving of duties was said to be under moderation. It was clean and last two words were Go Warriors. Don’t see it, wonder if I am on the embargo list, subject to censorship due to differences of opinion.

This is a sad day for the program. The record speaks for itself as did the game and the crowd last night. So now moving forward……I hope players get it that football is a game within a game. It is the players game from the internal standpoint and if you do not want to punish and dominate your opponent then I don’t really think you understand that part. This is not a shoving match and it really is about you doing your 1/11 each and every down and if you can inspire a teammate or two to do the same great. Football is for winners and leaders…..the alternative is the stark reality of losing. Be at UNLV and really there is no reason not to beat these guys at all-GO WARRIORS!!! You have a bright future as long as you understand the effort one must give to be a winner start to finish-

155… If I’m not mistaken all UH assistants are year by year contracts. It doesn’t really make sense to fire them unless they really did something stupid/unlawful/fake paperwork or lie about iPads.

160… That’s probably the best way to put JJ if he were to be the next coach. He’s not going to be coaching for the long term, good or bad.

I wouldn’t mind if UH took the opinion of being a “stepping stone” job. Meaning, go with in a younger coach, hopefully he does a good job and then let him move on to a bigger job once he gets to a point that UH can’t afford him. The only way UH could lose a coach like that to a big program is if he pulls a 1999 June Jones, which is unrealistic; or if he sets the program on a noticeable upward trend like how McElwain did at Colorado St., however, McElwain came from The SEC and was already on the radar of SEC schools before he left for CSU. So it’s unlikely this would be the scenario also.

If all goes well, UH would get 3-5 years of the “up-and-comer” and then the program (on the upswing) would be handed off to the next guy, which UH could afford to pay up to hire a known commodity if they play their contracts right (which we know they won’t).

“Either you’re in or out” please be “IN” Warriors and finish strong.

Hopefully all of the coaches put their best foot forward to assist Naeole as well.

FUHA if you recall Chow was put in the position of having decide which assistants stayed and which were out so many people unfairly faulted him for not keeping Rolo, Aranda, Miano and Cal, and still fault him for what shouldn’t have been his decision. I think that you would know that the head coach should be allowed to bring in whomever he chooses as his assistants.

Bring him in, bring back Rolo as a HC in waiting and absolutely bring back Miano for local recruiting, etc…

Ault went back to Nevada, Reilly back to Oregon State, it has been done before with success….

No Coughlin does not need to retire… He just has no players on his defense… He hired an OC that makes Eli play out of his mind. He hired a DC that’s great when he has players… Problem is… They don’t have ANY players on D… I thought Eli and the offense played brillantly but the defense just couldn’t get a stop… I feel like that’s a trend this year…

regarding this whole notion of “the run and shoot/JJ’s offense is dead and outdated because the spread era killed it,” i mean, where do people get this idea from? I don’t get it. if anything, RnS was supposed to be dead in the early 90s when people started to zone blitz but people are making like JJ’s version of the run and shoot has NEVER adapted to defensive counters and that all of a sudden, there’s some schematic issue that doesn’t allow it to be a viable passing offense on the college level (even though almost all offenses in college and NFL are using run and shoot concepts, like “choice,” “go,” “switch” etc).

But nobody ever identifies what these major schematic flaws that make the offense so outdated are and why JJ or some other coach running the offense can’t make adjustments in protection or route running, especially considering that the ENTIRE OFFENSE is predicated on adjusting pass patterns on the fly based on how the receivers and the quarterback is reading the coverage, versus the typical pre-packaged plays you see in today’s hurry up no huddle spread offenses, where you have a zone read, bubble screen, and some kind of slant or go route packaged together and the qb makes a very simple read and tries to pick the right option.

but if any of you guys have an answer to this question that’s not just “because UH lost to georgia in the sugar bowl and june jones left SMU,” I’m interested in hearing it.

JJ HC, Rolo heir apparent will be his first hire.
Im not sure about the NEV O stuff young Rolo picked up but Im sure JJ will run his own O.
He has a host of former players he can add to his staff plus retain a few from the current staff. This I can say, Miano will NOT be one. I believe as others that JJ wants to build a foundation for the FUTURE comprised of former UH ballers who have credentials. So, in effect, JJ wants to build a football program that is a continuum. Naturally, not all former players-turned-coach may be willing to accept positions bc the UH payout is less than competitive.
Still, the lure to return will be attractive for many.
I like all the reasoning #67 offered to hire JJ.
Here is another one I have not seen mentioned.
JJ has been in town since the start of high school play attending many games, often on the sidelines, at practices, scrimmages and games. Not recruiting (of course), but still, has had a great view of many of the top ballers in the State of Hawaii. Many of these players have made verbals…and we know how that can swing. Hawaii has had its share going the other way, including a few heart breakers for JJ. For a Hawaii HS player to be part of a what can be a historic turn-a-round there can be no ceiling for passion and loyalty to STATE that his hire would generate.
Look, Im not an inside guy but this script is too spectacular to pass off as coincidental. It makes too much sense. And, importantly, this story– the 8-mile line that JJ has walked since departing to pay his dues… Yes, he is coming back, this time to stay. This time to build an everlasting program. This time to pass off a legacy, not for himself, but rather, for the STATE he loves, its people and children-he adores and for the former players he coached!

I really hoped Chow would succeed but Matlin finally got the balls to make the right choice for the FB program. I wish Chow the best of luck. While JJ is the popular choice and I’m sure he would bring excitement back I’m not sure if he can sustain success without capable assistants. I’d be OK with bringing him back if it was on an interim basis and there was a coaching in waiting on the staff such as Rolo or McCloud. Regardless, I’ll be back at the stadium to see the new warriors.

The deed is done, I don’t need to say anything else about that except I wish him well in his next chapter. Time for all of us to move on to the next era of the mighty University of Hawaii football program’s re-rise to greatness.

Not sure if Cav could make it as a HC. Most high energy, super excitable guys like that flame out after a few years.

There’s only so much rah-rah high fives & headbutts guys can take before it gets tuned out. Only Pete Carroll has mastered that style, but, he has always had NFL caliber assistants surrounding him.

Like Naole’s no nonsense attitude and his concern about his fellow coaches. Let’s get a win at UNLV.

I think we are lucky to have Dave Matlin. He’s someone who gave up a lot to move here. No job lined up. Just a desire to a chance to live and sink his roots here. He parlayed a low rung job in the athletic department to head man of the Hawaii Bowl and Diamond Head Classic. In his position of head man he’s made executive decisions, nurtured a good working relationship with ESPN, and made contacts with many athletic departments as inviter and host.

I think he handled the Chow situation in the best possible manner. He didn’t give into the growing public sentiment for Chow’s head. He didn’t tip his hand prematurely. He took into consideration the players genuine affection for Chow and for the future of the assistants. He gave Chow the opportunity to turn things around. He acted quickly and respectfully once a losing season was insured. I liked that he set a short job posting period with the caveat they could roll the search process as needed.

Finally the point I wanted to make is I trust Matlin to make the right choice. I don’t think he is rubber stamp AD who will give into outside pressure. I think he’ll listen to everyone worth listening to but in the end he’ll put his job on the line a go with who he feels is the best candidate. He did it with the Ganot hire.

I remember an episode of Leahey and Leahey (before it was pau) where they interviewed JJ. They were asking him about coaching again, particularly in Hawaii. He, of course, was p/c and said “no, that would mean Norm’s not here anymore,” or something like that.

THEN, he dropped a little nugget that I found extremely interesting. He said that he would like to get back into coaching because he has some new ideas and new things he wanted to try. Anyone else catch that?

Just pointing this out for those of you that think JJ has nothing new to offer.

#221 … Ivan Maisel totally blasted UH with that comment, claiming that even Pete Carroll wouldn’t be able to win in Hawaii. Maybe he needs to do a bit more homework to realize that Hawaii has not been as bad as it has been under Chow for a long time. HE WON LESS THAN HIS PREDECESSORS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope DAVE ARANDA tosses his hat into the ring. His defensive unit loves playing for him and he utilizes an aggressive 3-4 defense; the type of attacking defense that Hawaii fans love. Today’s college game requires a coach with a lot of energy and commitment to game preparation which Aranda excels at. Problem is don’t know whether it’s worth it to him to leave the Big Ten and return to UH.

June totally rebuilt the program at SMU and was successful until his last two years there in 2013 and 2014 and he quit in 2015. His problems in 2013 and 2014 come from SMU’s increasing the level of competition to attempt to make a BCS bowl– it was like this year’s schedule for UH without the travel– playing the best teams in Texas–Baylor, TCU, Texas A&M, and Houston. As to criticism of JJ’s offense, it has been proven wrong by the recent success of offenses just like it– you can turn on college games and NFL games and see teams in formations without the tight end and only a running back to block and four wide receivers running either Air Raid or adjusting routes. June is a guy who has changed his offense to match talent– remember when June first came here he had one and two tight ends, the QB was under center a lot, and he was one of the first to employ the H Back or hybrid back– he changed the offense to fit our talent.

We need to bring in the best coach available, not the best coach with “Hawaii Ties” but the best coach PERIOD!!!!

Would hate to have the application tossed out of a young, successful FCS head coach, possibly a young “Urban Meyer type,” who’s intrigued with the challenge of coaching at UH, just because he has no “Hawaii Connection.” Here we go again. That’s why things don’t chance here.

Gary Dickman is competent.

Not, great, not horrible.

But the one thing I don’t like about his show is when a caller makes some comment, he’ll put them on the spot by saying that he borrowed the quote from one of the national radio programs.

I like Chris Hart’s schtick that he doesn’t do any preparation for the show.

This sort of irreverence reminds me of “The Dan LeBatard Show”.

Dan LeBatard gets so much vitriol from viewers and listeners, he had to explain the concept of his show last week.

“It’s a spoof,” he said, or in other words, it’s self-aware anarchy against the conventions of the format.

LeBatard once spent an entire segment on washing his face with the shampoo that trickles down from his hair.

I think “Sports Animals” is decent.

But yes, Josh Pacheco is talented, and has the potential to move to a bigger market if he so chooses.

I was in total awe when Artie Wilson had Willie Mays on his “On Point” show. He is so much more interesting as a radio host than a color commentator. I like that Thomas Louden is a regular caller. Louden was this former kindergartner’s idol on the courts, in the mean streets of Kaimuki.

Jeff Portnoy and Jackson Wheeler are my favorites(outside of Bobby Curran). They strike the same blend of humor, cynicism, and fandom that I carry when I go to all the games.

When Brandon Spearman misses a dunk by jamming the ball against the front of the rim from the baseline. You mourn the two points. But you also laugh hysterically to the irritation of the people sitting in front of you.

Had the New Mexico and Nevada losses not occurred, it seems to me things could have turned out a lot worse for UH football. Those seemed like very winnable games, and winning even both of them would not have indicated to me that Coach Chow had turned the corner. With the easiest part of the season coming up, and had Chow been at 3-6 or 4-5, it would have been harder to justify making a coaching change.

idk. there are a lot of reasons why a coach wouldn’t be considered a candidate for a head coaching position. maybe june jones isn’t actively searching for a job. maybe schools view him as a niche coach and the boosters and search commitees (because you guys know that UH isn’t the only school that uses a search committee to find a new coach, right?) has the same preconceived notions of the run and shoot being a gimmick/system oriented offense and JJ as being a good coach for a certain niche. maybe they see that june jones doesn’t hit the recruiting trail hard enough and they question whether he would have the energy and dedication for their team (because it’s not like june is a young man anymore).

maybe they don’t like the offense, stylistically. maybe people just don’t like him, period. there’s all kinds of reasons and most of them probably aren’t technical football related reasons.

Another frustrating loss leaving frustrated fans. This UH team was supposedly Chow’s best with talent and depth on both sides. Yet, the inability to perform offensively, not just to score, but to sustain drives is a big puzzler especially at mid season when offenses start to click with playing experience. Another big puzzler is why a coaching staff with so many years of experience and winning backgrounds is unable to win more often. And finally, so man fans wanted Chow to succeed as a local person, first asian head coach, etc., but it wasn’t meant to be.

Got to wonder how bitter Rich Miano will be if he is passed over again in the head coach hiring.

Interesting interview with Naeole. I think there might be some added entertainment value on the sideline the next four games. Just hope he remembers he can’t physically abuse his players if they make a mistake on the field.

I thought a bachelor’s degree was the minimum requirement to be a head coach at the university. Len Sakata does not have his bachelor’s so did not qualify. Some people asked that administration waiver the requirement but was denied.

Former UH Athlete#172, you are correct. Assistant coaches are on 1-year contracts. You don’t fire them; you just don’t renew their contracts.

Regarding June Jones as the next coach, the manner in which he left SMU raises a red flag. And his explanation that he needed a break from coaching raises an even bigger red flag.

Old School Dave #151, I believe Curran’s comment was based on information that the salary for the next HC would not be higher than $400K. A salary higher than $400K requires BoR approval. It’s ploy to speed up the approval process which is a minimum of 24 days when the BoR is in the loop. There are other options to increase the head coaches salary. It’s just the official base will not be greater than the $400K.

The big question is who are the 4 advisors to the AD. Is this a selection committee by a different name? Are they football people?

But all Israel and Judah loved David because he was so successful at leading his troops into battle.

I like the young and up and coming selection. I believe Dick Tomey was a lb coach at UCLA when UH picked him. Even better to get a HC from a FCS school. JJ and Miano have their positives but, they also have their negatives.

San Moku ( he holds a tie to all former players as a starter in the 80s, and equally important, he holds a VP position at a university–HPU)

Carrie Okinaga (UH VP general counsel—you goin need her signature, one way or the other, at the end of the day).

There you have it, the dream team….lol

If we are only willing to pay $400,000 or less for our next HC, I guarantee I will be renewing my season tickets and attending as many home and even away games as possible to enjoy the final years of Hawaii as a Division 1 program.
