No rest for UH coaches

A day after returning from the Australia/New Zealand series of camps, the UH coaches were back on the road to attend camps in Utah, Los Angeles, Oakland and Las Vegas this weekend.

Head coach Nick Rolovich empathized with defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa, who returned to Hawaii, “did his laundry,” and departed for the mainland.

Rolovich said the whirlwind tour Down Under was beneficial, calling it a “quality mission.” The Warriors were able to instruct athletes with various football experience. They also were able to plan logistic strategies for the season opener in Sydney.

Regarding the termite palace, who was the other familiar face who sold newspapers or something for many years ? He was once featured or mentioned in the newspaper but I can’t find it on the internet.

islandman, Howard’s brother, I believe, also worked at the old stadium, but his name slips my mind.

It’s hard for me to visualize a stadium where the park is now situated.

I really missed out. Aloha Stadium seems kind of antiseptic.

I do remember Old Rainbow Stadium. I remember thinking: Greg Oniate is god.
And I remember there was a saimin stand behind the metal death seats.

    No rest for the weary!

I’m thinking UH coaches must earn an obscene amount of frequent flier points with the amount of traveling they do every year. Although, it must take a toll on family life being away so often. I suppose being paid a six or seven-figure salary makes the sacrifice worth it.

Looking forward to seeing Buckner and his teammate, Armstead on the field this season.

I remember watching the movie WEST SIDE STORY a few years ago in my English class in high school and we had to write an essay. Ok the movie first came out in 1961 so shoots am I dating myself. Cappie the dog…..Honolulu Stadium was called the termite palace because of all the termites flying around during the termite season. The grandstand was on the ewa mauka side where the homeplate was located. Right field was makai and left field was diamond head and Chunky’s Drive Inn and center field was BowlADrome. Back in the day we had the Civic Auditorium on Beretania St not far from the Palace Theater.

  27. isleboy June 17, 2016 2:52 pm

Kaneohe Marines played UH back in the 50’s….who remembers the
Police Benefit All Star Football game…..police would sell tickets
for game as they cited you for speeding, moving violations….the more
tickets you bought…reduced cost of ticket. Ole Days of Hawaii…..LOL

Some lifelong Stadium memories include watching Charlie Wedemeyer play (never saw Herman) and he did things never before seen on a football field. His spin moves were ahead of his time. Saw him jump over a receiver from behind to intercept a pass. To this day I haven’t seen anything like it. The days before the ILH broke off made for some great games. Saw players like an aging Sonny Sixkiller light it up and OJ make that long kick off runback in the mud. Man he was fast. Loved the smell of cigars and an occasional pipe. The saimin under the stands was a halftime hilight. Just playing with other kids under the stands. Will forever be thankful to my dad for starting my lifelong love of local sports. And it started right there in the heart of Honolulu.

Andrew Ho’s grandfather(John Tsarnas) played against Herman Wedemeyer, in college and was on his all-star team that came to Hawaii in the 40’s so play a few games. Herman was also a long time family friend.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Continuing down the nostalgic road of the Honolulu Stadium. Remember seeing the likes of Whitey Ford, Stan Musial, and the Islanders. Of course, demolition derby and stock car racing as well as the 49th State Fair. One thing I remember was the introduction of the Amana Radar Range at the Fair. They passed out cut up hot dogs on toothpicks to demonstrate the “New Microwave Technology”! There was also the Japanese lady who sold peanuts at the Stadium and Sears. Story was that Morely Theaker of Sears nearly pulled Sears out of the initial Ala Moana complex if the shopping center did not allow the lady to sell her peanuts. There was also a story of a murder suicide involving her daughter. Come to find out this peanut lady was loaded, had owned an apartment building.

My memories of the Termite Palace… helped Troop 35 clean the stands Sunday morning after a Rainbow Football game and got free tickets for the next game. 30-40 troopers and parents came to work. Not sure if Charlie Ushijima and/or Masanori Okumura arranged the Clean-up.
