No relief in sight

The baseball ‘Bows have a unique problem. Their relief pitchers aren’t getting enough work.

That’s because their starters — this generation’s Four Aces — have been dominant this year.

The ‘Bows lost two-thirds of their three-pitcher rotation at the end of the 2016 season. Brendan Hornung was the lone holdover. And Hornung lived up to the No. 1 role in the first two series, befuddling hitters with his four-pitch repertoire, including a retro-era split-fingered fastball.

But Dominic DeMiero, Neil Uskali and Jackson Rees pitched well in the recent four-game trip, in which the ‘Bows went 3-1 and won the Dairy Queen Classic. To offset Minnesota’s heavy-lefty lineup, left-handed DeMiero pitched the first game of the trip. In the four games, the ‘Bows’ had a collective ERA of 1.64 and WHIP of 0.97. The starters pitched 32 of the 35 innings. Uskali and Rees pitched complete games. Of the three relief innings, one was mop-up duty. The ‘Bows were ahead 11-2 when Matt Richardson was summoned for the final three outs.

DeMiero missed a week of pre-season training because of medical procedure in Washington. Uskali lost 11 pounds from flu-like symptons three weeks before the season opener. And Rees, who struggled as a reliever in the opening series against North Carolina State, rebounded as a starter to win two consecutive games.

The ‘Bows returned from Minnesota today — well, all but coach Mike Trapasso, who is scouting a tournament on the West Coast. The ‘Bows resume workouts Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s opening game of a four-game series against Sacred Heart.

Is Kennedy Tulimasealii still enrolled as a student at UH Manoa? I saw the posts from papajoe2 and Arcumfortis from yesterday which made me curious. When I looked through the UHM student athlete handbook last year, there appeared to be an appeal procedure after suspension/dismissal from a team, but no mention of any ability to seek reinstatement. That seems to be a flaw in that a student in good academic standing should be able to try out for a sport or play – as a walk on. If he remained a good student, made restitution as required under the terms of his DANC plea, and there are assurances and/or safeguards in place so that he will not revert or engage in similar conduct again, why not allow him to petition for reinstatement?

Tinoisamoa, Bess, Brennan and Edwards benefitted from a second chance. There is nothing that requires that the second chance be at another school, is there?

#3 Duster, could not agree more. Personally I would hope some definitive info would surface, but for some strange reason I still think a return remote as it may seem will still occur. This situation has many dimensions but for him I hope it works out.

  5. madeinhawaii March 6, 2017 11:59 am

The rules that forced his “permanent” removal from the football team would have to be amended by upper campus. I don’t foresee that happening. Kennedy should have moved on to another school, if he hasn’t.

Here is something for more than the casual observer

Anybody have anything on the apparel deal?

Anybody have anything on the broadcast issues-i.e. Streaming or viewing home games for us mainland folks. I would hate to share what many of us had to do to view games! Herb thanks bruddah!

    School of Hard Knocks…

Congrats to the Baseball Bows winning the Dairy Queen.
    Season looks promising.
As for the basket ball Bows, looks like Woes
coming their way. They lost the last two games so how
    can they expect to win?

  9. Ipu Man March 6, 2017 12:09 pm

And thanks yesterday for you who clarified
the Devan Stubblefield situation. Rolo,s got
a fully loaded pistol under his belt. 🙂

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    DUSTER’s Comments on #3:

I cannot condone Kennedy’s past behavior but it would seem that he has paid the price for it and should be reinstated at UH

If not, he should transfer out to finish out his studies and play football elsewhere. He had the potential of going to the NFL/CFL and should not give that hope up.

Please send me a note with your latest address.
    Thanks

  12. turfwar March 6, 2017 1:19 pm

I too would love to see Kennedy back in a Warrior uniform but my guess is he is finishing his degree and will be immediately eligible at any school he chooses to transfer to by this summer.

Tom — my gmail address works, but it is “steveM.hnl”, not stevenm.hnl.

Tom Mui – I’m getting an error message when I send to your Hawaii rr com address. Do you have another email address?

Maddog50 – You’re welcome. Let’s hope they get it straightened out soon.

    Hiya!
Just wanted to drop in to see who’s here.
Got a call from the SA sales staff and figured out how to get resubscribed for a reasonable rate.
Looking forward to more PrideRock action!

  16. Bryson March 6, 2017 3:38 pm

Maybe those of us who want Kennedy to be reinstated should write a letter to the powers that be and see if that helps at all…

  17. M L Warrior March 6, 2017 3:57 pm

I am curious is what Coach Rolovich position on the Kennedy situation?

  18. Warbow March 6, 2017 4:05 pm

Just wondering if you all would feel the same if this was a player who had no playing time and wasn’t a possible all conference player.

  19. H-Man March 6, 2017 4:09 pm

Regarding Kennedy, IMO, the school will follow a course of action it would impart to any student for a similar domestic abuse situation in accordance with their rules of conduct. They just simply cannot make an exception for Kennedy because he is a star athlete. That would be sending the wrong message to the student body, especially the women, who would probably organize a protest against the administration. Not the kind of news you want to see on CNN, etc. UH administration will uphold Kennedy’s dismissal from the football team, if in fact an appeal has been filed for his reinstatement.

    Great Afternoon All!

I am curious is what Coach Rolovich position on the Kennedy situation?

Uhhh…looking forward to not getting phone calls about his players reaching into cars and slammin’ radios? or beefin’ with cops in the buff?

    Das it.

  21. islandman March 6, 2017 4:22 pm

Fitchett of Bows was the MVP of the Dairy Queen tournament and Uskali was named to the All-Tournament team.
    https://twitter.com/hashtag/HawaiiBSB?src=hash
Fitchett was also named BigWest Field Player of the Week.

  22. islandman March 6, 2017 4:36 pm

BaseBows also No. 58 in NCAA RPI ranking.

  23. Duster March 6, 2017 5:09 pm

Re: #19 H-Man, I know where you’re coming from. I am not so sure that Kennedy was the abuser, though. Was he? I seem to recall that he was a naked early morning yeller with scratches all over from the girlfriend who had a confrontation with HPD officers who responded, and he damaged the navigation in the girlfriend’s father’s SUV. The cost to repair the damage was reportedly in the neighborhood of $2,000. He reportedly was also taking steps to satisfy the restitution ordered by the Court as a part of his sentence and entered an anger management program if my recollection is correct.

As far as Kennedy having support for a second chance as a “star”, I think second chances should be available whether a star or not and depending on the circumstances. Now Joe Uglietto is a totally different story.

  24. kalua pig March 6, 2017 5:37 pm

    free kennedy.

  25. cappie the dog March 6, 2017 8:27 pm

Many years ago, I cried, “Free Ray Reed!”

A great one-year player like Noah Allen, but not by choice.

  26. cappie the dog March 6, 2017 8:32 pm

I hope somebody from the bullpen will emerge as Hawaii’s closer so that Jackson Rees can eat up a lot of innings as the long-reliever during the Big West season.

Hawaii was invited to that tournament because they were counted on to provide the other teams with a guaranteed win.

  27. islandman March 6, 2017 9:25 pm

cappie, do you remember another UCLA transfer, Marv Vitatoe, 1972-74 ? He played with Tom Henderson , Artie, etc. per UH info. But the UH Lettermen list has him for only 1973. He was a very good streak shooter. Maybe before your time.

  28. burro sabio March 6, 2017 9:35 pm

Rolovich would look like a hypocrite to speak out against domestic violence and then allow Kennedy back on the team. It’s not going to happen.

  29. burro sabio March 6, 2017 9:45 pm

Judge Mui, is abuse of a horse’s corpse a criminal offense?

  30. Ohana Hawaii March 6, 2017 11:49 pm

I love it! GO BOWS! I will be really seriously awesome! If Patrick Murphy were on the coaching staff. You really will see Hawaii in the college world series must all the time. Because of two good! I’m sorry! Two great coaches who really go out and recruit and teach the players!. The staff right now is not to bad!. I hope the boys take it easy with girls on Thursday to Sunday. Na! Joke!

    #6 Maddog 50 –

Totally agree! Does anyone have any information on these topics?

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    burro sabio #29

Depends on the horse – KT?

  33. A-House March 7, 2017 7:46 am

I believe Atty Green is the person who should look into KT’s possible reinstatement to UH football

would be great to see him in a UH uniform again

and, no second chances should be granted to all — happens every day in real life

what I dislike most is the professional sports who frequently give players 4 or 5 time chances for abuse of drugs — that’s not right!

  34. Rabbit ears March 7, 2017 7:48 am
