No decision yet on No. 1 QB

The Warriors do not have a No. 1 quarterback.

They have three.

The quarterback derby has been whittled to three, with junior-college transfer Cole Brownholtz working with the scout offense today.

That leaves the competition to Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen and Dru Brown.

Nick Rolovich has extended the deadline for naming a starting quarterback for the season opener against California in Australia.

Slotback Nic Tom will not play this season because of various injuries. But Tom will be part of the 105-player travel roster to Australia.

aloha everyone !! main thing is that rolo is not going to be like chow and stick with a QB that not play well on game night !! best luck rolo !!

  3. pakegolf August 17, 2016 11:16 am

May the best man win the job, and be good enough to keep it…(but the second or third man be ready to go)!

  4. 808warriorfan August 17, 2016 11:18 am

I have a funny feeling that “Rolo” is planning a heavy run game vs Cal to counter their “Air Raid” offense. Would make sense with a “stable”, if I could use that word, of RBs (Paul Harris, DSJ, Steven Lakalaka, Ryan Tuiasoa, Mel Davis, Kaiwi Chung @ H-back) that each brings a different element to the running game. Would also help in keeping the “D” off the field, and ease the team into the ’16 season … JMHO.

I’m also interested in how our DL will fare vs Cal’s OL as they got some “Big Bruddahs” up front. We’ll need to counter with execution, quickness, and technique to win that battle.

Also it’s looking as if Cole Brownholtz will be the #4 QB; does he have a redshirt year available … anyone know ?????

    TIME TO ROCK AND “ROLO”

I suspect there is more to this than we – or Cal – are meant to know. It is what it is and will be what it will. I have faith in the Rolo, his staff and the Warriors.

….soooo, I guess there is no Oceanic Special for season ticket holders on the away games? How many are not on free tv?

  10. madeinhawaii August 17, 2016 11:40 am

Cal’s defense was as bad as Hawaii’s last season. They were ranked #108 in defense while we were ranked #104. I feel good about Coach Lempa lifting that end of our team up somewhere closer to the middle of the pack. Offensively, both sides have new coaches and key players. Should be one heck of a game of skilled positions and play calling.

  11. H-Man August 17, 2016 11:47 am

ST, outside of the QB position, will Rolo release the 2/3-deep chart anytime soon? I am interested to see if any of the incoming freshmen such as Keala Santiago, Ikem Okeke, Jeremiah Pritchard, Kingjames Taylor, Kalakaua Timoteo, Davine Tullis. transfer Chris Posa, and RFr JR Hensley will be part of the rotation.

  13. Rodney August 17, 2016 12:26 pm

Cal D line got better through
    the PAC 12 grind.
    Let’s see what Rolo does
    with Chows recruits.
I expect an upset of Cal.
AZ as Qb and use that
    up tempo RPO offense.
Wish we were using Air Raid.
    Go Bows!!!

  14. Maddog50 August 17, 2016 12:34 pm

I too am curious but in no rush regarding Qb slot. Very interested in the two deep on the DL LB and OL. Want to see and hope to see guys like Norman Hensley in the mix. Most of the other players pretty sure I can figure them out. One thing for sure there is a lot more depth of higher quality at all if not most positions-the climb begins in about a week! Go Warriors! Those so you at Murphy’s tonite please share your thoughts-was in town about two years ago and dropped off a Southside Irish tee shirt for Murph!

As long as Coach Rolovich has the flexibility to change an ineffective QB mid-game, it doesn’t really matter who the starter is.

And on another note: ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF!!! AGAIN???

  23. RoyGBivs August 17, 2016 3:03 pm

    Just wanna win,baby!!!

  24. Akamai Okole August 17, 2016 3:11 pm

    Not getting it…

isn’t the hope that the HC (or the QB Coach) would be able to coach up QB1 and get him to be effective as opposed to yanking him?

  25. Akamai Okole August 17, 2016 3:12 pm

  26. 808warriorfan August 17, 2016 3:42 pm

Just got done listening to OC Brian Smith on 1420 AM w/ Gary Dickman. One question asked was whoever the starting QB is, should he falter, will the Coaches pull the plug and “next man in” … the answer was yes …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  27. Ipu Man August 17, 2016 5:04 pm

Hope they don’t wait the whole half to decide…
As long as he doesn’t go three and out more than
three times in row, maybe keep him in for a full
half. But I’d yank in the first quarter to see if
Rolo has some Rolo-type qbs who can rally the troops.
    πŸ™‚

  28. z August 17, 2016 5:59 pm

Coach Smith was on the radio. Still no starter at qb. They like all three. W,Z and B. Any of the three could play. Will not hesitate to switch qb if they think it is needed. Likes StJ and Harris at rb with Lakalaka the third back.

  29. Warrior Dave August 17, 2016 6:25 pm

Ian Schering on Kanoa’s show said Ikaika has not been able to throw a pass in practice since the scrimmage Saturday night.

Maybe that’s why an announcement has not been made. No sense name Ilaika if he can’t play against Cal.

  31. Long Time Supporter August 17, 2016 6:58 pm

I hope Rolo don’t select Woosely as the starter. He ain’t done crap for the last 2-3 years. You think he’s gonna deliver his senior year? Break somebody else in.

  32. z August 17, 2016 7:06 pm

Heard day before on the news that Ikaika was held out of throwing the ball. I asked here but no answer. Big secret. Hush, hush. More secure than Hillary’s email server.

  33. Captain Ron in Hawaii August 17, 2016 7:11 pm

Up from lurking – And all the way back to #4, 808warriorfan. Better Rock and Rolo than Lock and Lolo. Okay, back to lurking. Sorry about that.

  34. madeinhawaii August 17, 2016 7:14 pm

Looks like Ikaika has issues with his throwing shoulder. Hopefully it’ll get better before the weekend is over.

  36. kimo browner August 17, 2016 8:25 pm

more secure than crooked Hillary’s server doesnt say much for tight security. LOL.
Moreover, tight lips over a QB not throwing the ball in practice before the season starts is not good news for Ikaika supporters. ROLO got his shot when Timmy Chang went down before a game in far away Texas against SMU. Who knows.

  37. Inyoface August 17, 2016 8:49 pm

A lot of people talk about the depth at runningback but I think the receiving depth is extremely deep also.

  38. oneseason August 17, 2016 8:50 pm

No season tickets yet. Maybe tomorrow.

  40. H-Man August 17, 2016 11:22 pm

Today’s news, Rolo said all three QBs are good; just cannot decide/choose the starter. I’ve been biting my lip all day long. Why??? Rolo did say, when asked about a depth chart, that they are pretty much set on most positions and may release a chart “yeah, maybe today.” I think he knows who the starter is but we won’t know till the start of the game. Drama.

  41. Maddog50 August 18, 2016 5:43 am

Decision gonna come soon game notes with depth chart should be out by W/E

I like your score better πŸ™‚

  46. islandman August 18, 2016 7:39 am

DSJ and Harris co-# 1’s at running back, someone said OC Smith said so on radio yesterday. I couldn’t see Harris being no. 3 in the depth after what he showed last year.
Today’s SA states Brownholtz and Holly practiced with the scout team yesterday.

  47. 3-Prong August 18, 2016 7:52 am

Working on both sides of the Big Island today. What’s the New Kine omiyage for bring back? (Other than Peanut Bruddah Cookies)

Sooooo, are they bringing the entire team up to Aussieville?

  48. islandman August 18, 2016 8:13 am

Paper yesterday said “the whole squad” of 105 players is in travel party of 194.
” The bulk β€” 171β€” are players (105), coaches (14), football staff (10), medical staff (3), trainers (7), equipment staff (8), tutors (3), athletic administration (4), athletic staff (6) and cheerleading squad and coach (11), according to a list supplied to the Star-Advertiser.
While UH is required to bring cheerleaders to Sydney by contract, a band contingent, said to be 30-something strong, is paying its own way. β€œThey were very resourceful and started raising money as soon as the game was announced (in November),” Matlin said.
Matlin’s wife and seven spouses or family members of coaches will accompany the party per employment contracts that allow a family member to make one regular season and one postseason trip per year.”

  49. Coach DB August 18, 2016 9:19 am

Rolo doesn’t need to inform Cal of who he intends on starting at QB, make them prepare for all four. A coaches job is to put as much pressure on his opponent as possible! I think our DC is the right coach at the right time for a turnaround.

    PrideLOCK!!!

  50. NotNasti August 18, 2016 9:46 am

Re: Cal Depth Chart. Is that the same Ricky Walker III (former UH commit) buried at the bottom of the Cal depth chart?

  51. madeinhawaii August 18, 2016 9:48 am

Yep the same Ricky Walker… committed as a grey shirt.. which sadly isn’t binding on the athlete.

  52. H-Man August 18, 2016 10:31 am

Rodney, from previous thread re. OMG Cal Def huge…. Looking over the roster, link posted above, the size of the D players look about average. However, we don’t know how strong and quick they are. Maybe they can cause havoc on passing downs, but I give the advantage to our offense on running plays.
