Newcomers report today
The newcomers report to training camp today.
It is not as dramatic a procedure because most have completed medical examinations and were briefed on rules and code of conduct. The freshmen have been attending classes during the bridge session that began in July. Strength/conditioning coordinator Gary Beemer had the newcomers in separate offseason workout program.
As always, the freshmen will be allowed to compete for playing time. Red-shirt decisions won’t be discussed until the end of training camp.

Paul George’s gruesome injury reminds me of a similar one suffered by former UH wideout Rodney Bradley, who was on track to quite a career.

I always thought it would be cool to be a season-ticket holder.
I bought season tickets to Team Hawaii, a long-forgotten soccer team that played at Aloha Stadium. I think John Fink had something to do with that team.
And, I suppose, I technically was a season-ticket owner when I was at UH. They had a small student activities fee that allowed us entry with our student ID card or “pink slip.”
By the way, in the old days, student and faculty season tickets were included in tabulating season tickets. By that measure, UH should now be allowed to add 15,000 to its current total because all students are required to pay an athletic fee.
Well, tomorrow there will be a soft launch of our site. That should be quite an adventure.
I’ll keep everyone posted, but it appears the site will be called hawaiiwarriorworld, or something like that.

hope their parents and coaches have been pushing academics harder than athletics!
How about something like “Rainbowman” based after the old Japanese TV action hero that was shown here locally along with Kikaida and Kamen Rider? 🙂

The current generation of local high school players has sure grown. I can remember when a player who weighed in at 250 lbs. was considered “big” back in the day. Of course, you had a lot of guys in high school playing both ways (Ironman Football) back then, too.

if the athletic fee is raised to $100 per semester, this cost is greater than what I pay for “senior” status – being a graduate and supporter since 1959 I guess I can accept this newly found status!
I still believe that the community colleges should be allowed to purchase sports tickets based on an “athletic fee” as they are part of the UH-Manoa system
guess, same should be true for the California CC system – but, the D1 schools, don’t need that support as their alumnae and fans contribute enough to keep it afloat

Not into retro despite my years at UH…JJ was correct in establishing a new tradition of winning. Unfortunately, we still have folks thinking backwards…Keep it up & we’ll be back to DII again, as we were in the 60s.

Interesting to note that Utah State’s student athletic fee per semester is $135 for 12 – 18 credits. USU students voted in favor of the increase in 2012.

I’m sure if the students at Utah State lived in Hawaii they may have thought otherwise. I don’t know what the cost of living is in Utah but it’s definitely less than here.
Memory is kinda foggy, but I think the great Pele played here against Team Hawaii. Anyone can confirm/remember this?
There is a nice story in the Maui News about Michell Loewen from Lahainaluna. I remembered when he was in high school he was big but looked soft and kind of rotund. He graduated in 2011, walked on at Arkansas and today is a starter at defensive end and can also play TE. And at 6’6″, 280, he actually looks slim. He was given a scholarship in his sophomore year. He is the first player from the MIL to play in the SEC.

I think it’s great that construction is booming and that all of the roads are being fixed. Well, not sure I want them fixed all at the same time.
And, sure, we all figured it was politically motivated.
What bothers me is to have a commercial bragging about all the things that are being built. Instead of letting the work speak for itself, it’s basically saying: I fixed this. Vote for me.
Somebody needs to advise somebody that there are ways to receive credit without making it look like you want credit.

For many, the hardest part about a sit-in is to stand up again.
Since the subject of student activity fee was brought up, the highest student activity fee for a state school in D1 division is $1000/school-year administered by Rutgers University. I guess that may be partially the reason Rutgers joins the Big 10 this coming season. Rutgers fields 27 varsity teams. Most in the Big 10 is Ohio State which fields 37 varsity teams. Illinois, like Hawaii, fields 21 varsity teams.

#20 OSD … fees are one thing, but dollars out of pocket would be the bottom line. And UH undergraduate total tuition cost is almost twice that for Utah State.
UH Manoa resident general undergrad tuition is $4,920.00 + $390.00 for fees = $5,310 total (12+ credits) … undergraduates in architecture, business, dental hygienist, pre-engineering/engineering, and nursing have higher fees and pay $5,810 or $6,310 (nursing)
Utah State resident undergrad tuition is $2,726.83 + $464.84 for fees = $3,191.67 (12-18 credits)
The DII scenario makes less financial sense the current situation. In short, it would almost entirely shut down any chance for the generation of revenue. Further, there is no way schools Linfield and Cal Lutheran could afford such jaunts on an annual basis. If UH were in the lower 48, it might make for a better argument….
#49: Yes, good points. UH has a steep slope to climb compared to many other MWC schools. Interesting that Pac-12 member Utah’s student athletic fee is $85 per semester.
I think the whole UH system, should be audited, evaluated and maybe down sized. Student activity fees should be $100.00, per semester because you support your school and the curriculum. If you don’t like it, don’t enroll.
Many young folks look at me in disbelief when I tell them that I used to pay $240 per semester at UHM back in the day. Graces chicken katsu plate (no minis back then) was about $4.

#51 Economic realities are certainly tough on UH. But the situation is not helped by all these terminations for convenience. The $299,000 salary that the new tenured faculty member gets represents an extra $21 for each of the ~ 14,000 undergraduate students at UH Manoa.

Old School Dave — you’re kinda young yet. My UH tuition was $125, athletic book for all games was $15 or $20 (I forget), and I don’t remember Grace’s serving chicken katsu then. But prices were 65 cents per plate and 75 cents for a mixed.

It’s possible for UH to be a FCS football team like Cal Poly ? Or it could be like the Big West teams that have no football team, like Cal Irvine.
#58 SteveM … Since UH also paid a one time fee of $100,000, the savings is only $40,000 assuming the Chancellor position remains vacant for one year. That would be $2.85 per undergrad. Then again, if the search committee (needed to ensure hiring the best and the brightest) costs more than $40,000, there won’t even be a paper savings 🙂

#63 … that savings would only occur if the Manoa Chancellor job would remain unfilled for those 3 years. We were paying a Chancellor $439K each year. We will be paying a tenured professor $299K and a Chancellor ~$400K each year. That sure looks like a big cost increase to me.

You know you guys must be young to remember Rainbowman and Kikaida. In my days it was Sheriff Ken, Kinipopo and because I’m old I forget who else. Yes Kikaida came after my youthful days. I did support the UH football team in the late sixties when I got home from the service and sat on the wooden benches on the Mauka side of the Termite Palace to watch UH play Humbolt State, Redlands, local military teams etc.

I think Kikaida, Rainbowman, Kamenrider, Five Rangers and the like is making a comeback in Japan and gaining popularity with the younger generation. Last time I was there in the Akihabara District (electronics district) there were numerous stores that were selling action figures and other novelty items like a Kamenrider mouse for a computer, which I bought for my nephew that cost $55!

I remember when hamburgers were 25 cents, cheeseburgers 30 cents, french fries 15 cents and most of all hamburger meat had that beefy taste – not like the cardboard crap they sell today.
Hinshaw spent UH money like a drunken sailor in a ho house. She’s also as dizzy as they come.
In N Out hamburgers are $1.60. As much as I enjoy their burgers on my trips to the continent, I wonder if they could be successful in Hawaii with their limited menu? BTW, they have no such plans to come here. I gotta have my teri burger AND saimin.
Windward CC was $25 per semester for a full time student and Andy’s Drive-In had 5 cheeseburgers for a $1 on Friday nights. Why even go over the Pali in those days.
Yuki’s downtown…..nearby the Music Box…..across Timmy’s Gym……had great homemade burgers…..back in the 70’s.

I needed a economy car when I attended UH in the mid-70s, so I bought a new Datsun B210 4-cylinder that gave around 30 mpg. Cost new – $2,800 out the show room. Tuition was $20/credit-hour.
Rainbow Drive-in had $1.00 chili plates and $1.95 mix plates in the 70’s. When ST learned to drive gas was 40 cents a gallon.
Chunky’s Drive-In across from old Honolulu Stadium had inexpensive hamburgers, maybe for $ .25 ? FHB is now at that location.

Loved the intro to his college scoreboard — M – I – S – T – E – R, mister touchdown USA, da da da da , he can run pass and throw…. Those days no video except from the past week, just scores and some commentary. He also hosted a show called Biddy Boxing. I think all the matches were between kids under 12 and was run in conjunction with PAL.
Great for Samson Satele, he has been a solid starter for Miami,Oakland, & Indianapolis.

I talked with him, and he told me how beautiful Hawaii is. He played for Santos, and the city of Santos is similar to Hawaii, a city by Atlantic ocean with large cruise ships by the pier. I saw when he scored the 1000 goal, and it was a penalty shot against Vasco da Gama at the Maracanan stadium in Rio de Janeiro. It also was my last day in Brasil as I left to Hawaii, I believe it was the last day of 1969.
