New rule impacts Warriors’ training camp

The NCAA Division I Council’s decision to eliminate multiple practices in one day could mean an earlier start to the Warriors’ training camp.

While ousting two-a-days, the NCAA still is allowing Division I teams 29 practices ahead of their season-opening game.

The Warriors are using a Hawaii exemption to open against UMass on Aug. 26, the so-called Week Zero. Counting backward from that day while giving Sundays off as the mandatory rest days, the Warriors’ fall camp projects to open on Monday, July 24.

That creates two conflicts. The bridge session — a two-course summer program that helps incoming freshmen get a jump on academics and acclimation — will have a week remaining on July 24.

Also, the Mountain West Media Days, an event in which the league trumpets its stars and coaches, are scheduled for July 25 and 26 in Las Vegas. It would be difficult for UH to justify either missing the event or not using all 29 available practice days. (Remember the heat Greg McMackin absorbed for not using all the practices for the 2010 Hawaii Bowl?)

There will be interesting decisions developing.

#2. I was optimistic when coach Mac was given the HC job. He brought a lot of experience and enthusiasm and sincerity to the job. I am not sure he ever grew into the CEO type capacity that a HC needs to develop. The last year or two seemed like the wheels were coming off the cart. But he was a good man. Like many of the good people who have served at UH I wish his leaving would have had a little more Aloha. When I compare the job Mac did and the atmosphere he created, as compared to his successor……well in retrospect he did ok. On he other hand, I think Rolo has the chance to grow into a great head coach. Only problem with that he will then attract poachers with fat wallets.

Yeah, I agree. Coach Mac was too casual for administration. I remember they were particularly irked when he would wear shorts and t-shirt when traveling. And he made that comment about “gays.” I think that was the final straw. He most certainly connected with the fans. He was a players’ coach, but now it’s Rolo-time, a time that has brought back fun. Work hard but don’t forget to have fun. Rolo sure does think outside of the box, His read-option offense is exciting and he has the QB that can run it.

Is there a rule that fall camp must be on consecutive days except for Sundays?

    RE: #3
    Arcumfortis — ditto!

As I recall, Coach McMackin left a half million $$$ on the table when he departed and accepted pay cuts along the way. Much integrity. Contrast this to a certain basketball coach…

Hmm….I wonder if UH could use less day but more hours per day to fit in the practices. IOW….instead of 29 days of 2 hour practices, UH could use 25 days with some days going 3 hours(2 hours hard with one hour light and devoted to special team).

UH should at least petition the NCAA for some kind of waiver….either to allow UH to start earlier due to week zero or let UH conduct longer practices certain days as long as they don’t go over 20 hours per week.

    #8 Kahuna,

Maybe UH should petition the NCAA for a waiver. I wouldn’t think we would get an answer in time for the 2017 season. Also, they probably wouldn’t want to do us any favors after the basketball rulings.

NCAA, are Morons! Just implement new rule for following season, so it may not this years schedule.

I believe you can still have two a days…the NCAA is banning holding “full-contact” practices twice in one day. Teams can still hold extra sessions, such as film study or walk-throughs, but the players can’t be in helmets or shoulder pads.

  12. 808SEC April 17, 2017 5:39 am

Two a days were being phased out here in the south anyway, both in College and High school, citing player safety…

Off topic: LSU (and Aranda) just landed Breiden Fehoko. Reportedly, he also considered Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss.

And former Clemson and Moanalua DT Scott Pagano is headed to Oregon.
