Lessons from Boise

In 2001, Bill Belichick started what would become a motivational trend. Following a loss, he led his players to a field, where he buried the ball from that game. It was a symbolic “funeral” to the recent past.

While the Warriors could find a lot to bury from this past weekend’s road trip, there are lessons to be learned from Boise, such as:

> Street life: Sure, we all sit around and make potato-themed comments — a popular T-shirt, after all, is “Darth Tater” — but a stroll in downtown Boise shows why it is appealing to college students (and recruits). There are restaurants and bars and clubs … and college students. There are street musicians who are talented. Even the homeless have to compete for handouts, each with more compelling — and funnier — cardboard signs. There are different ethnic restaurants, as well as popular food chains such as Five Guys and Chipotle. (Two UH football players asked if they could skip the steak-and-chicken buffet to eat at Chipotle.) Conclusion: Boise’s downtown, Wisconsin’s State Street and Columbus’ North Side are everything that University Avenue is not.

> Blast the past: Anyone else notice UH’s best marketing ideas involve resurrecting the past? Retro uniforms. Kelly green. White-Out, Green-Out, (Pick-a-color)-Out nights. Each week, UH should try to come up with a new promotion. In five games, Boise has worn five different uniform combos. UH is poor, but basic math shows that three sets of jerseys and pants can equate to nine uniform combinations. (Hah! I did learn something at Roosevelt.)

> Fit to a T: In the pre-iPhone days, a television show’s popularity was measured by selected viewers filling out a ratings book or a gadget attached to the TV. Viewership totals eventually included shows watched on DVR, laptops, phones tablets, and so forth. For too long, UH has been marketing game-day merchandise to people who, you know, actually go to a game. But like TV shows, many people watch UH football without actually attending the game. Those game-day T-shirts, such as “Let’s kick some Aztecs” or “We’re gonna perform a Lobo-tomy on New Mexico”? UH should sell/distribute them at bars or next to where people buy poke and beer. When big moments happen, people like to boast they were there. Now they can be “there” even if “there” was their neighbor’s garage in front of the 72-inch flat screen.

Did Bill Belichick deflate the ball before burying it?

    Re: No. 3
It still might be under litigation.
The owners want the players to share in half the cost of the ball.
The union is arguing that being buried for eternity is too harsh, and maybe it should be underground for only two games.
Roger Goodell is seeking video to determine if that ball was, in fact, the one used in the game.
    It’s a hot mess.

A good lesson to learn is to win no matter the odds. Lesson not learned in years.

It is too bad the University Avenue does not have a college town feel to it. Actually, in the past, the University area had more college type places than it does now. Back in the day one of the coaches bemoaned the lack of on or near campus life hurt recruiting– he said some of the best prospects have their parents visit and they would rather see more attractions on or close to campus to keep students out of Waikiki– especially after they stay in Waikiki on their visit.

All of the stuff you mentioned doesn’t have anything to do with the final score of that/a game.

The only lesson we learned from Boise is coaching matters.

Boise has been running pretty much the same systems (w/tweaks here and there) for the last 30 years with different coaches who was/is a part of past coaching staffs.

That is the only thing we should take out of Boise’s success.

    RE: Uniforms and marketing…

Why did UH get new home uniforms but not away uniforms? The ones that they wore at Wisconsin were last year’s. Why not a road uni to match the new design? We have seen how creative UA is with other schools. Why not UH?

  14. man eating apple October 5, 2015 8:38 am

Oh, after all these years now you want to start to monetize other aspects of the football experience? Pretty sure I’ve seen those ideas before, seeing as how I suggested them. Being on Hawaii Time means being behind the curve.

  15. man eating apple October 5, 2015 8:42 am

Don’t forget my idea to make a football museum at Aloha Stadium. Which includes showing highlights of local high school players, to build fan excitement over local kids. That would go a long way toward keeping kids here. This would take an investment in taping games (can go the no-budget way and just record on a smart phone) and editing, but the people who actually go through the whole trouble of watching a game at Aloha Stadium would definitely appreciate that. And like I said, local kids would notice the fervor they can inspire.

After rematching the Boise game for the 2nd time my grades for that game is easy… Hawaii F- and Boise A+

The offense has major issues against elite talent like Ohio State, Wisconsin and Boise State.

Max Wittek- B For the most part Wittek is making the right reads, right throw and putting a catchable ball accurately to the WR’s. The WR/TE Corps is not going to get any faster speed wise, so they need to do some soul searching and toughen up and catch some balls in traffic, rip the ball out of the air while strongly pull in the ball while a defender draped all over them, since they lack elite speed and quickness running correctly read crisp routes will help get separation. Everyone knows proper footwork and technique equalizes most talent and the a breakdown in footwork and technique will doom a team.

Even, QB Woolsey threw some catchable passes that were dropped and lets not even mention the misreads and running wrong routes by the WR corp in the send half.

O line- C As a unit played average could be better.

All the WR’s and Tight Ends- F- The WR/TE need to work on getting separation and catching the ball and running the right routes!!!!! The drop passes that hit them right in the hands happen way to frequently with this WR/TE corp.

Running Backs- D+ Need to pick up the blitz and hold a block!

The defense got exposed by Boise State… the elite talent Boise State has showed… the Boise O line whipped the Hawaii D line in the trenches. The freshman QB Rypien had all day to throw the ball and the Boise RB had a pretty easy day running that ball.

D Line- D Couldn’t get much pressure on QB and got pushed around.

LB and Secondary- F- Got beat and Got beat down by Boise WR and TE Corps.

Special Teams B The punter got way to may reps because the WR/TE corps inability to catch a pass and run the right routes.

Coaching F- Norm Chow, Don Bailey and Thom Mason got out coached by the Boise State coaches.

The competition for the rest of the schedule gets a little easier but the Hawaii WR/TE corps could be the weakness that hands wins to opponents. But the penalties has got to stop, way to many penalties to keep or even change momentum in Hawaii favor.

Those retro Rainbow uniforms are not helping this season, Hawaii hasn’t won a game this season wearing those retro uniforms. Those uniforms just might be bad luck this season. Probably should save those retro Rainbow uniforms for games that Hawaii is favored by 20+ points.

  20. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 5, 2015 9:40 am

I continue to feel that Max gives us the best chance to win at that position. What’s telling is the WR who are obviously playing and/or being coached horrendously. Not to mention RB Harris who has the speed and ability to run well but can’t block for nothin’.

Bobby Curran was mentioning this morning that at practices the WR and TE were doing well, especially at catching balls. However this has obviously not translated under the lights. A simple case of our WR corps being made up of driving range pros perhaps?

I was disappointed with Stubz this weekend but I’m still holding on to hope that a coach, any coach, will light the fire under our receivers and coach them up.

One snap and clear. Time to regroup as a team and fan base.

My take on Boise is we ran into a perfect storm for disaster. A road weary team running on near empty going against a highly motivated team looking to make every remaining game on their schedule a statement game.

Hawaii fans know all about the physical pounding the schedule dealt us the weeks leading into this game. We should also realize that OSU and Wisconsin had different goals and motivation from Boise going into the game with us. The goals for the two Big 10ers are to win their division, win the league championship and to get into the National championship playoff or a New Years day bowl. We were just a small speed bump to achieve their goal.

Boise on the other hand has one simple goal – to get into a New Years day bowl. They already have one lost and their remaining schedule is against a relatively weak MWC. They only way to move up the polls is not just to beat but to romp everyone left on their schedule.

  27. Arcumfortis October 5, 2015 10:09 am

Ok….one snap and clear. I have spent my time being fed up and now would prefer to imagine more interesting things than more and more losses. We have a weak schedule coming up (although some of the team’s not as weak as they seemed eg. San Jose State and UNLV). And we play in a weak division of our conference. Would love to see us win this week and then parley our wins into winning the “west” division. And then the real fun……rematch with Boise for the conference championship. That would be great. Likely? At this time maybe not but also not completely pie in the sky. It would be great to give our players another crack at them.

  28. jimmy the lock October 5, 2015 10:14 am

  32. Derek October 5, 2015 10:23 am

Ohio State, Wisky, and Boise all have very good defenses. But, to get shut out 3 straight on the road, come on now. We should have scored at Wisconsin, but Allen committed a personal foul on the 2 yard line that set the team back. Against Boise, we didn’t even penetrate the 35 yard line in Boise territory. Harsin called off the dogs after halftime. It could have scored 80 if they wanted to. At 55-0 that was embarrassing as it was. I think in the end, the weary road eventually caught up to the Rainbow Warriors and we were worn out. Plus, Boise St. is very innovative and they execute very well. They always have a new wrinkle or two for every team they play. They have done this for years. Sadly, we have been slow to react to their plays and their formations. The Broncos are definitely a top 25 team. But, should we feel not too bad that we lost on the road 55-0, while Boise beat Virginia in Virginia 56-14! Hawaii against Virginia should be a good game, hehe!

  33. Bigwave96744 October 5, 2015 10:24 am

Arcumfortis who are we to call any team on our schedule weak?

  34. Arcumfortis October 5, 2015 10:32 am

32…..don’t disagree…..no intent to disrespect anyone……our remaining schedule is weak based upon wins and losses of our upcoming competitors…..I am not saying that we are better than them. I do think we have a chance to win some games and even win our division. Would I be shocked it we lost most of our remaining games? Not at all. But, I think this is not probable. Much will be told this Saturday. If we show up and play and get the win then much is possible. It we drop another deuce on the field then not so much.

  35. Tempmanoa October 5, 2015 10:35 am

Since we are only going to be favored in three games and one of them is SDSU (based on computer models and “experts”), we need to win that one and the other two we are favored to win (Fresno and ULMonroe)– scary thing is that those games are really tossups like SDSU with us favored only by the 3 point advantage to a TD. Winning those three gets us to 5 wins. Then we need two upsets to be bowl eligible and have a winning season, including at least one upset on the road— tough, but mathematically possible. Upsets at New Mexico and at UNLV– tough places to play and teams we have a hard time with– would do it.

I remember a lot of us commented back in the day about how Billy Ray Stutzman was soft and didn’t have the guts and concentration to catch passes in traffic. He used to drop passes that hit him in the hands a lot, especially in the middle of the field. Then a couple weeks after reading about some of us commenting about his butter fingers and lack of toughness. Billy Ray Stutzman took it to heart by working of his craft and stepping up his game and proved to us he had great hands, toughness to catch the ball in traffic in the middle of the field and ran great routes. This WR/TE corps needs to work on there craft as route runners, catching passes and being fearless like Billy Ray did.

UH being a 3-point favorite doesn’t justify wearing retro uniforms that hasn’t aided in producing win or even a close competitive loss this season. Hawaii hasn’t beat San Diego State in MWC play at home or on the road. San Diego State offense and defense schemes are similar to Hawaii style of play and the SDSU coach staff is very good. So why risk jinx a game with in retro uniform that Hawaii hasn’t even won a game while wearing it this season.

Hopefully, Hawaii can get some home field calls from the refs that they didn’t get on the road at Ohio State, Wisconsin and Boise State. But they have to clean up the penalties the rest of the season to have a shot to win enough games to make it to a bowl game.

The rest of this schedule is not weak, but is not as tough as it is playing Ohio State, Wisconsin and Boise State on the road either. San Jose and UNLV are very good teams this season and are not going to be easy wins like I thought.

  45. Paniolo October 5, 2015 11:33 am

David Matlin, his boss (whoever that is) are turning deaf ear to the call by Hawaii fans that we need a new head football coach. Same talk for the last three years, regroup, back to the drawing board – IS NOT WORKING.

inyoface, too late to get Dino Babers. Hawaii had its chance, but selected Norm Chow instead. Dino Babers now on the fast track to a big time program and big $$$. Good luck to Dino.

Gotta find a way to have the stadium on or near campus… until then you will not have a college town or place similar to the ones Stephen is talking about. Campus life is pretty much dead… Of course that’s because most students don’t even live on campus.

  48. Boolakanaka October 5, 2015 11:53 am

Tru-dat, Hman. Dino gets 7/8 wins this season, he will be in the big 12 next year. Little birdies tell me that he has the attention of some SEC teams as well.

  49. sofaking_blk October 5, 2015 12:13 pm

There are a lot of good coaches out there besides Babers. Look at what Memphis HC is doing, their 5-0 this year, MEMPHIS! Maybe we should give him a call.

  50. Whats up October 5, 2015 12:15 pm

To be fair to the WR Corps this season, the UH Wide Receivers coach is the former grad assistant Luke Matthews who resume isn’t exactly loaded with NFL or College Football Experience either. We remember Jordan Wynn who was also a grad assistant that was the QB coach and quasi offense coordinator and that didn’t lead to improved QB play, scoring points on offense and Wins last season.

This could be a pure coincidence that the issues Hawaii had on offense was QB play and WR’s the past couple seasons and the position coaches for QB was Jordan Wynn and still is for WR’s is Luke Matthews. Just saying the WR corps has been pretty lack luster the past couple of seasons and is still a issue this season as well. I not saying Wynn and Matthews are to young age wise to be position coaches but I am saying that they lack playing and coaching experience at the FBS (D-1) and NFL level to really teach, lead, plan, evaluate talent and recruit at the FBS level.

I have been commenting on how the WR’s Corps has been lackluster and didn’t even think to comment about how the WR coach is also lacking in experience and knowledge in coaching and as a football player in the NFL and limited experience at the FBS level at Utah.

Think about it for a second? Would you want your MD Surgical Cardiologist say to you. Sir or Ma’am, I need to perform open heart surgery on you, but I’ve only done this particular type surgery a few times by myself. Would you and your family feel comfortable with paying the money and proceeding with that limited experienced MD? Probably not? You would ask for a 2nd opinion or ask be referred to another Surgeon that’s really experienced in doing that type of open heart surgery.

Or your Surgeon has a reputation for not being that great and learned how to perform open heart surgery from another lack of experienced Surgeon in his past. The old student/rookie learning from another student/rookie scenario? Just food for thought why the WR corps has been lack luster the past couple seasons?

  51. A-House October 5, 2015 12:20 pm

I may complain/criticize a lot, but we still back the players especially Mrs Ahouse, Midori, and MasaBoy – me I get scolded all the time when I moan and groan/.

Yet, there is some sanity to my madness – upper campus sucks with lack of support – ok, they have other concerns, but don’t accept a free ride to Ohio State after you tell the BOR and Hawaii that the Cancellor’s Office will not make any additional contributions to sports – some econ major prof should tell the Pres and Chans just how much $$$ sports contribute to the bottom line – include the HVB who seem to reap all the spending $$$ and will not contribute to UHAD – yes, the Outrigger does by sponsoring classics and thank you.

Even if UH does win 7 games and goes to the Hawaii Bowl, Chow must go!! maybe, he will resign in 2015, UH appoints Bailey as acting HC/OC and see what all the hallabooh was about his “creative offense” – yea, yea you all will say where the $$ will come from – if thee is a will, there is a way ; or, is it that Chow has so many stout backers that UH will back away from fear of losing their support – what about all our support???

perhaps it happens at every school when hiring a football coach, but many mainland schools have no problem is “targeting” a coach and hiring him – keeping those big $$$ donors happy includes them deciding who becomes coach? if yes, how about they taking the “rap” for all the losses and dwindling $$$?

    yes, yes, monku monku!!!

  52. Boolakanaka October 5, 2015 12:20 pm

The local guy that might be open, and is qualified, is Duane Akina, at Stanford. Still the wizard of deebees, his young squad is playing well. If I’m not mistaken, no other position coach, specific to DBs, in the last 25 years has put more players in the NFL.

A rematch with Boise on a neutral field. If I were Chow I’d set that as the goal for the remaining games. Redemption and pay back is a powerful motivator. Playing in the MWC title game is redemption beating Boise would be the sweetest pay back. For Chow it’s Knute Rockne time.

I’d ask the team did we play our best game against Boise? Is Boise 55 pts better than us? Given the chance can we beat Boise on a neutral field? I’d answer no we didn’t play our best. No Boise is not 55 pts better than us. No we can;t beat Boise on a neutral field – not unless the coaches get better at preparing you and not unless everyone brings their A game every time you put your pads whether it’s practice or a game. Remember the Blue Field Massacre, remember it well.

Cannot complain about traveling as an excuse. Cal Bears went to Austin and Seattle in consecutive weeks; beat Texas and Washington to remain undefeated. They travel this week to Salt Lake City. Let’s see how they do against the leading Pac12 team, Utah. After that, they go back on the road to play UCLA. Granted it’s not that far, but still it’s an away game. Then it’s USC at home, then back on the road to Eugene to play the Ducks. That’s what I call P5 football.

You what Boise St, Ohio St, and Wisconsin all have in common?

    On campus stadiums.

Attending games at Aloha Stadium sucks. Thereʻs nothing for fans to do in the area to draw people to the stadium and there certainly are no options for fans to go after the game. There certainly are no quality food options nearby. Sorry, Ice Palace and McDonalds donʻt count.

  66. Former UH Athlete October 5, 2015 1:29 pm

    “You know what….”

sorry my proofreading sucks as bad as Aloha Stadium hot dogs.

  67. Former UH Athlete October 5, 2015 1:31 pm

61.. .No offense to Cal Bears, but Texas and Washington are both terrible right now.

But… Cal Bears probably aren’t getting shutout.

  68. BigFan October 5, 2015 1:33 pm

Boise St. has been a good program for many years starting before they moved up to D-1. It seems like the biggest difference is the support of the entire state. They have their legislature along with the administration committed to developing their program. Whereas we have neither. Fans????
They have been really consistent with their success while we have been hit or miss. If certain areas come together for us, we have a good year regardless of everyone not buying in. If those areas go south then we fall apart.

  69. Former UH Athlete October 5, 2015 1:34 pm

Wait… UH is favored over SDSU?

Based on what I’ve seen from these two teams, the +/- total should be in the 20’s

  70. Boolakanaka October 5, 2015 1:40 pm

A small digression– but watching the pregame of the Seattle game, and damn, Pete Carroll is one young looking 65 year old– and he can spin the rock still–impressive.

  71. warriorfan October 5, 2015 1:43 pm

Bad results on the field, and horrible attendance, need a change period!!!

  72. Andrew October 5, 2015 1:48 pm

UH is a commuter school. Thus why it’s understandable why it’s not a typical “college town”. Once classes are done, campus is a ghost town.

  73. hitmanhart October 5, 2015 1:54 pm

aloha everyone !! this week game is make it or break it game !! hope the the UH boy are up for it !! time to change that offence and run what works !! the type chow trying to run you need all 4 and 5 star players !! and we lucky if we got 3 stars player on the field !! that why wags & JJ offence put up big numbers !! all you need is speed and timming and fast moving qb !! right know that tightend is killing this offence

  74. cocobean October 5, 2015 2:03 pm

Andrew. I just assumed the MWC championship game was in Vegas. Come to find out the MWC champion is invited to the Vegas Bowl. I stand corrected. But I still believe the team goal should be a rematch with Boise.

  75. nutmegger October 5, 2015 2:08 pm

    #61 H-Man
Traveling may have an impact when you consider UH Football has already traveled 22,960 miles and the circumference of the earth is 24,900 miles. If you circled the earth in 4 weeks it might have an impact on performance.

  76. Andrew October 5, 2015 2:09 pm

    73.

of course. If it’s not in Hawaii, Vegas would be the next best place. I’m sure if there is a rematch, UH wouldn’t need any more motivation as revenge would certainly be on their mind. Hopefully by then the offense would have gotten back on track and gained momentum through the season.

  77. cocobean October 5, 2015 2:12 pm

We were told when Bailey came on board he wanted to run plays in 17 seconds or less. The team has not come close to that mark. Would it better at this point to huddle up, settle everyone down and get on the same page. They can always go up tempo after they get a chunk play.

One question I have is the QB allowed to audible out of the play the coaches call. We seem to be predictable especially when we call a pass.

  78. SteveM October 5, 2015 2:16 pm

    RE: #58
Old School Dave — ST wrote in today’s Star-Advertiser:

… He [Chow] announced that quarterback Max Wittek, running back Paul Harris, wideout Quinton Pedroza, free safety Marrell Jackson and linebacker Benetton Fonua exited during the game under doctors’ orders. Middle linebacker Julian Gener did not make the trip because of health issues.

If the coach announces it, then ST can report it. Besides those listed above, you saw many starters from game one looking flat. Were they ready to return to the field? Exchanging body blows with two Big 10 teams (both rated in the top 25) in two weeks cannot leave you in great shape–plus nursing your injuries waiting in airports for your connecting flights home must suck. In hindsight, maybe some of the $2.3 million payday should have been used for a charter flight back home after the second MMA match with Wisconsin. Get the players back home and in for treatment ASAP.

BTW, did you see my crazy idea of a charter 747 for UH in last nights blog? Most nonstop flights would be 10 hours max. All first class sleeper seats for the players. MEDEVAC and treatment facilities at the back of the plane. The AD, admin and BOR can have the existing first class/business seating as an incentive to approve this. Big $ boosters can ride in the upper deck for $5,000 r/t tickets to defray expenses. We can easily haul all the equipment and luggage in the stowage compartments.

  79. JustAsking October 5, 2015 2:16 pm

What is wrong with this picture: Two of our players asked to skip the TEAM steak and chicken buffet so that they could go on their own to eat burritos? I hope Coach Chow released them from the TEAM meal, as well as all future TEAM activities, including road trips. Inclusion on the travel squad is a huge honor, especially for UH, where we travel with less than the maximum to save money. And these two “team members” value a fast food burrito more than a team meal? Classic. Those players should transfer to a mainland school so that they can enjoy the exotic pleasures of Chipotle every day.

  81. cocobean October 5, 2015 2:22 pm

Andrew that’s the point of a rematch as a team goal. The team has to make huge strides to get a rematch. The coaches have little control over the physical shape the team is in terms of injuries and dings. What they have is control over the mental state of the team in terms of morale and effort to improve. To get better the mind has to believe it can then the body will follow.

Thanks, Steve M: I hope they can get those players back on the field, soon. I was afraid of having this UH team “kinda all buss up” after those 3 games. Hope the $2.3 million dollars was worth it. The psych of this team is also important at this time.

why doesn’t our football team practice at least once or twice under the lights at aloha stadium before games? wouldn’t this help the receivers get used to seeing the ball better in actual game conditions? we should have a home field advantage right

  91. Come on, man! October 5, 2015 5:12 pm

“Is Boise 55 pts better than us?”

    Clearly, yes.

“Given the chance can we beat Boise on a neutral field?”

    lol no.

also, i think some of you misunderstand what point spreads actually are. The spread isn’t necessarily which team is objectively better than the other and by how many points. The spread actually is the PUBLIC’S perception of the two teams, and it’s adjusted based on how many bets are being placed on both sides. Vegas is interested in having a more or less equal distribution of bets on both sides so that they can make money off the juice.

  92. z October 5, 2015 5:14 pm

    Aztecs win 24-17

  94. H-Man October 5, 2015 5:24 pm

Warriors probably don’t practice under the lights at Aloha Stadium because they would have to pay to have staff on duty and to turn on the lights. You know, we no mo money, and for sure, the State will never give UH Athletics a break. They no-mo aloha spirit.

  95. UH4eva October 5, 2015 5:24 pm

Fire Norm Chow please give us hope. And quit with the retro unis so ugly and out of date just like NC.

  96. Casual Observer October 5, 2015 5:29 pm

Last twobits about Boise. Is it the coaching? When Dan Hawkins and Chris Peterson were at Boise, they had phenomenal success and their style of play was the same as what we saw on Saturday. Yet when they were hired away to other significant, big budget programs (Colorado and Washington), they never realized the same success or style of play. A lot of factors goes into a consistent winning program but maybe a factor not mentioned enough is the player’s motivation to compete and win since players already put into so much commitment and effort.

  97. UH4eva October 5, 2015 5:30 pm

  99. z October 5, 2015 5:42 pm

I did not learn anything from Boise game. I watched them play before UH and came to one conclusion. Oh,oh! I could not come up with a score but I hoped. But then my hope went up in smoke. But I do feel that the season starts now. We still get chance.

    100. posts for today.

  101. H-Man October 5, 2015 6:41 pm

Former UH Athlete, I agree about Texas, but not Washington. The Huskies lost to Boise St at Boise 13-16. Close game. Now this is the team that beat the Warriors 55-0 when the score could have easily been 80+ points to “zero.” So this tells me the Huskies are good. Just how good? Won’t know until this Saturday when they play USC at the Coliseum.

Nutmegger. I agree about the significant traveling and the toll it has taken on the Warriors. I would accept 49-7 as a reasonable score for the traveling and injuries, but 49-0 in the first half is inexcusable and unacceptable. Warriors need to get better. No excuses.

  102. oneseason October 5, 2015 7:09 pm

Husky Stadium is getting an underground rail station … $1.9 billion for 3.15 miles to connect Downtown Seattle to the campus with light rail. With a rail link at UH, maybe a near campus stadium could work … just need a few $ billion 🙂 … http://www.soundtransit.org/Projects-and-Plans/university-link-extension/Project-update-093015

  103. el burro sabio October 5, 2015 8:26 pm

Dino is going to be the next coach of Kentucky or Vanderbilt. We could never afford him here.

  104. cocobean October 5, 2015 8:28 pm

Just caught Chow’s interview on Inside Access. He’s trying to sell the team – “back to Boise in 9 weeks.”
Can we beat Boise in a rematch? Definitely a NO not right now. But a maybe if the team can improve enough to win their Division.

  105. Willie October 5, 2015 8:32 pm

#36 Bigwave, UNLV also played tough on the road at Northern Illinois and at Michigan. Scored a bunch against NI and a TD on a tough Wolverine D. IMO, Michigan better than Wisconsin.

The other so called projected win is supposed to be the SJSU Spartans. This team is getting better as the season goes on. Played very respectable at Auburn. Got a dynamic back in the mold of Marshall Faulk. If he stays healthy and plays against the Warriors, it will be a tough battle. Their QB is very mobile, got an above average arm and is pretty accurate.

  106. FCWarrior October 5, 2015 8:39 pm

Put in the reserves, I bet there are some playmakers that have not been tapped.

  107. Come on, Man! October 5, 2015 8:51 pm

“Definitely a NO not right now. But a maybe if the team can improve enough to win their Division.”

definitely a no right now. Unless Ikaika Woolsey/Max Wittek/whoever is going to play qb and the entire receiving corps starts playing like the second coming of colt brennan, davonne bess, grice-mullins, jason rivers, and CJ Hawthorne, then even if UH wins their division (and let’s be real: our division in MWC is pretty sad), it’ll still be a resounding no. especially up on the smurf turf of boise, where UH has never won before and which is more or less a graveyard for power 5 teams.

this team has major issues, and it has nothing to do with the traveling.

  108. Da Punchbowl Kid October 5, 2015 9:02 pm

Nice reading the comments today – they say it all. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Memba when the University Ave area had a Pizza Hut, Magoo’s Pizza, Moose McGillycuddy’s, Hot Lava Bar and a Theater? Or even Kuhio Grill? That was a fairly college town – like scene.

It seems like a logistical nightmare, but yeah, a small, on campus stadium such as JJ (among others) envisioned would be sweet. One with a built in promenade for small college town style businesses. Maybe the area below the freeway can be reimagined and redeveloped to accomplish such a thing.

Anywho, lets hope for a big improvement this week.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  109. cocobean October 5, 2015 9:11 pm

Most find it laughable that the coaches have set a team goal of back to Boise. I can follow their line of thinking. This is motivational ploy to rally the troops after a butt whipping loss. It’s a challenge to the team to improve one game at a time. Will the team respond and be championship worthy nine weeks from now. Who knows but we should get an idea after the SDSU game.
The only thing I’m sure of is we haven’t played our best and there’s a lot of room for improvement.

  110. Tempmanoa October 5, 2015 9:33 pm

If you watched the Boise game and saw the down to the details crispness, timing, and sound fundamentals, and playing together as something more than just 11 players with exactly as diagrammed execution– ask yourself how did this happen? Why aren’t we playing like Boise? Why are we sloppy and they are crisp?

  111. oneseason October 5, 2015 9:43 pm

#110 … because Coach Mac left the cupboards bare? 🙂

  112. winning October 5, 2015 9:58 pm

It would be naive to think that our HC would let his OC call all the shots. Its NC written all over this year’s O. Nothing has changed

  113. winning October 5, 2015 10:22 pm

If Wittek is out. SDSU 31 UH and IW 13. Why not look at the other QBs. Thot they had nice credits. IW is not the answer.

  114. rundown808 October 5, 2015 11:03 pm

Back to Boise? That’s all you got? That’s not a pep talk. That’s set up for failure. Proof is in the pudding. Outmatched and outplayed. Don’t put dodo on a stick and call it a corndog. Ain’t nobody stupid. Even Stevie Wonder can see the hot mess brewing. You can’t lead a team and make excuses. Stop with the pep talks, all the hype on players, or what you think the fans want to hear. Stop talking and start doing. Don’t want to hear it anymore.

What’s really going on? Some breakdown happened on the sideline and field. Lack of communication and confusion. Biggest eye opener. OC takes the fall for what happened. We may lack in areas on the field. However, what happened Sat. We got out coached. Bottom line. Somewhere along that sideline something got out of control. That’s like a ship with no sail.
Our WR cannot get seperation. Comes down to speed. They lack technique comes down to coaching. They lack technical skills comes down to training. Bottom line. Takes a talented coach in any position to work with what he’s got and make it work. To make the player go beyond their limits to produce and perform with pride. Starts before you even enter the game. You practice how you play. Dropping passes at practice? Players allowed to wear their uniforms the way the want. No knee pads, pants worn like shorts, shirts not tucked in, black face paint…. really? Set a higher standard. Raise the bar. You just went to OH. The champs. Did you not take notes? Football Pride to the highest level and degree. To gain respect you got to show it in everything you do.
So, if the coaches got a trump card. I suggest they use it. They need all the help they can get. Get out of jail card or skip a turn. Lol. Cmon man. We not only need skilled players but talented coaches. Let’s get it together coaches. Earn your keep. May not be much by comparison. But yall knew the job was dangerous when you took it. So this shouldn’t be about money. You got a job. Do it. Have some pride, put your heart in it, and what ever disagreements aside. That means you Chow. Make better choices and recruiting for the team.

  115. beans October 6, 2015 1:10 am

Ok. We took some lumps and would like to have done better in the 3 losses, BUT we also have 2 WINS. Now we push the restart button and go for it! This weeks game is a big one like the Colorado game was. We won that one. Now lets just come together and win this one. SUPPORT OUR TEAM AND COACHES. It’s OUR TEAM!

    Eggs from rooster #60……
    Retro uniforms bad luck……..
Why do we have to wear a uniform that we already wore last year?…….
    REALLY?

  118. oneseason October 6, 2015 7:21 am

UH needs to reimagine the Rainbow Warriors as Hawaii’s team … Free television coverage … Continue to keep season tickets affordable … Stop pushing luxury boxes if a new stadium is proposed … And work with the leg to bring in enough money to pay for the people to make it happen. The UH executive pay is said to have to be compatible to the mainland to get the best and the brightest. Athletics is a tiny piece of the pie, but it is an important public relations element IMO.

  119. MattyBoy October 6, 2015 8:15 am

It’ll be a happy day when ST’ blog headline reads “Chow Resigns. The Search For A New Head Coach Begins.” Until then, fire Chow. The worst HC to ever step foot on the UH campus.

  120. Ipu Man October 6, 2015 8:30 am

  122. Ipu Man October 6, 2015 8:38 am

I like the retro unis. The haka hasn’t helped either, but I like it, too.
And I don’t see much separation in the close zipped passes in other
teams who catch the ball, including the NFL.

  123. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 6, 2015 9:01 am

    FCWarrior,

You may have your wish come Saturday. Half the starters sound like they are not practicing today with injury. Harris, Ewaliko, Pedroza, Fonua, Witteck are all in shorts.

Hawaii a -3 favorite? Yeah, stay away from that bet.

  124. ML Warrior October 6, 2015 9:33 am

Game five is done and not soon enough. The tough part of the schedule is over, and now they need to focus on the more important part of it. The team is two and three, most of that are realist expected us to be here, the haters that thought we would be zero and five are still calling for Chow’s head. ENOUGH!!! This not the NFL, they are still in the hunt for the the division title and bowl appereance, you do not go out and fire your coach in the middle of the season, that is nuts! They need to get healthy, and focus on what needs work, make the necessary adjustments, simplify things, work on techniques, and get back to basics. Focus on what is in front of you, not the past. Do the work! Work harder than your opponent. Play all four quarters of the game and they will WIN!!!
