Lempa resigns; Suiaunoa named defensive coordinator

Legi Suiaunoa, who coached the defensive line this past year, has been named the Warriors’ defensive coordinator.

Suiaunoa replaces Kevin Lempa, who resigned, presumably to become a non-coaching defensive analyst at Michigan. Lempa interviewed at Michigan the past weekend.

Suiaunoa will continue to coach the defensive tackles and nose tackles.

Mayur Chaudhari, the special teams coordinator, will coach the defensive ends.

Offensive coordinator Brian Smith also will coach the running backs and tight ends.

Mahalo Coach Lempa and Good Luck!

COACH LEGI!!! Rise and shine!! It’s your show now!

    I really like the hire.
    Mahalo Coach Lempa.
    Good luck to you.
    Go Legi!
    Go Warriors!

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Good luck to coach Lempa! Seems we lost a lot of talent to the big schools. Only says we do get our share of great sports minds here at UH.

Great start for the Wahine Softball season. Keep it going Wahines!
It would be great to have the football, basketball (m&w), baseball and volleyball (m&w) teams to make regular appearances at the Wahine Softball games. Great way for the general public to meet up with the Warrior athletes. We don’t always get to see them up close and talk with them, unless you like ST and get up early to attend practices.
The other thing…change the food peeps over there. Getting tired of hot dogs, chips, saimin, nachos, chili soda, water…did I just memorize the whole menu there?
Let L&L set up and offer their ono stuff.
    Anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS!

    Coach Legi…Bring da Katoosh!

  6. Old School Dave February 10, 2017 9:58 am

Congrats to Coach Suiaunoa!! Looking forward to seeing him put together the Warrior Defense.

    Mahalo, Coach Lempa.

Keep it going Coach Legi! Keep that train rollin!

  8. Maddog50 February 10, 2017 10:00 am

Stephen-at this point staff reduced by one, are we seeking someone to fill that role-

  9. DaveLetterMan February 10, 2017 10:02 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
    Good luck Coach Lempa.
Tata out at Kahuku. Headed to UH?

  10. shoichi February 10, 2017 10:02 am

Congrats to Legi. Good Luck Lempa with your move to Michigan.

There is currently a newly open position according to a job posting. Will be interesting who is given the assignment of replacing the Safeties coach which Lempa was given.

  11. hilorain February 10, 2017 10:08 am

Looks like the reorganization is a short term fix for Spring Ball. This would seem to allow Rolo to take his time in filling the vacant coaching position.

    Good luck to Coach Lempa.

    Congrats to Coach Legi!!

  12. Bigwave96744 February 10, 2017 10:12 am

ST, will they look into hiring a replacement coach, to fill Legi’s vacant spot?

Former Governor, Warrior and teammate of Rolo, Lance Samuseva would love to return to Manoa and assist Legi on the DLine.

    Probably even Tony Tuioti.

    Just inquiring

  13. z February 10, 2017 10:13 am

    Congrats coach Legi.

  14. bowwar February 10, 2017 10:14 am

Congratulations to Lempa and Legi…Opportunities gives rise to “hope”. Not knowing Legi’s background, has he ever functioned as a DC?? I like promoting from within, but DC is a very responsible position, so hopefully Legi has the background to be successful. That does open up an additional position and hopefully, they will fill it with someone with experience. I was thinking that Eliminian might become the new DC, but…I was mistaken. I’m not sure what the situation is with Tata, but it looks like they got rid of him at Kahuku. Let’s hope everything works out for the Warriors!

  15. Old School Dave February 10, 2017 10:16 am

UH Assistant job posted on UH Jobs site yesterday, in addition to the DC job posted earlier.

Coach Lempa will be earning the same amount in a non-coaching analyst position as he did at UH as DC ($200,000?). Less stress. Michigan’s coordinators both earn over $1 million. Yikes!!

  16. Bigwave96744 February 10, 2017 10:20 am

#9 or will Tata return to St Louis?

  17. DaveLetterMan February 10, 2017 10:26 am

    #16
Possible but I talked to one of the SLS coaches and was told that both Cal and Ron aren’t done yet. Unless something came up since then.

  18. Stephen Tsai February 10, 2017 10:37 am

Yep. They have to fill a spot.
The good thing is this doesn’t mess up the spring schedule too much. The players had been working toward Feb. 20 start to spring ball. Now it’ll start on Feb. 23.

  19. Ohana Hawaii February 10, 2017 10:39 am

Let’s see what the coaching staff do next year football season? Because it’s a weak football schedule! Two hard teams to beat is UCLA & BYU. The other years will be much better!. All of you remember that this not great football staff!. That went 7-7 not 9-3 June Jones first year with a great coaching staff!. 7-7 is not so bad!.

  20. AKPhenom February 10, 2017 10:53 am

7-7 is not bad at all, we finally found a quarterback!

Regarding the upper bowl(s) being closed, as somebody whose college hockey team did the same thing, it improves the fan experience immensely. Closer to the action, actually feel like your in the crowd, the music and its bass makes you feel good. Ticket price should be adjusted, or get waived if you have to move down a level. This should be a good thing.

  21. kakaako kid February 10, 2017 11:00 am

Rock bands will come, and rock bands will go, but Pride Rock’s gonna go on forever!

  22. madeinhawaii February 10, 2017 11:01 am

Come April, they may need to fill another spot if the NCAA approves the 10th coaching position. What would the tenth position be for?

  23. BigWave96744 February 10, 2017 11:05 am

    Name you will probably hear:
    Rich Miano
    Vavae Tata
    Richard Torres..
    .
    .
    .
But what about former Rainbow Warrior Phil Austin?

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid February 10, 2017 11:26 am

Yo #20 – kakaako kid – love that post. True dat! Rolo has laid the foundation for the football culture at UH to do great things. I think this hire of Suianoa and the coaching shuffle is further proof of that. BTW – we must be related – mom was a Kakaako girl a long time ago, when it was a working class neighborhood. Mahalo for your post. You rock, kid! (sorry, I just had to use that line) 😆

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  25. H-Man February 10, 2017 11:27 am

This is a good move by coach Rolo to elevate coach Suiaunoa to DC. Congrats to Legi. On the other moves, I just think it is too much for Brian Smith to be OC and have the running backs and tight ends.

  26. Bryson February 10, 2017 12:09 pm

So will Mayur continue to coach special teams as well as DE’s? I thought our special teams improved towards the end of the season

  27. Mytake February 10, 2017 12:52 pm

Tata leaves Kahuku. 2 to 1 he comes to UH.

  28. pakipark February 10, 2017 1:39 pm

Thank you Kevin Lempa. Kinda wish you could have stayed one more year. Good that the DC was promoted in-house. Good for continuity. The promotion will also help Coach Suiaunoa recruit as he will see the whole picture on defense. As far as the assistant coach job opening ,,, current Graduate assistant Marc Moody

  29. AllG February 10, 2017 2:51 pm

Bring Tuioti back to coach the DLine!!! He is a good recruiter as well

  30. Ipu Man February 10, 2017 3:16 pm

Hope Lempa got the job for sure.
And congrats to coach Suiaunoa .
    New coaching position? Maybe
to teach how to grab the upcoming
    flag rule…

  31. turfwar February 10, 2017 4:16 pm

Legi being promoted to DC increases his pay which is deserving for what he accomplishes on the recruiting trail. Need to keep this guy for as long as possible. Wouldn’t be surprised if he has already received P5 offers.

  32. 8o8warriorfan February 10, 2017 5:49 pm

I’m in favor of trying to get Tony Tuioti as our nww DL Coach … #26 “Mytake” I’d like some “action” on your 2 to 1 wager … good luck Coach Lempa we’ll miss you …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  33. leron February 10, 2017 6:17 pm

#20 I’m listening to the Kinks because of you .

  34. Akamai Okole February 10, 2017 7:37 pm

    Great Evening All!

    Congratulations to Coach Suiaunoa!

    Mahalo and Aloha Coach Lempa.

  35. burro sabio February 10, 2017 9:32 pm

Doesn’t sound plausible that Tata was on the mainland looking for a job at UH. Also doesn’t seem plausible that Tuioti would recruit players to a hellhole then abandon them. But I’m just a donkey who can type so what do I know.

  36. oneseason February 11, 2017 6:04 am

It is great that Coach Rolovich is hiring and training a staff where promotion can come from within. I felt that was what Coach McMackin was doing with his staff, and think the success of his coaches shows the wisdom of such planning. While excessive turnover of staff would not be good, running a program that is know for training successful coaches seems like a good way to attract the best and the brightest.

  37. 808warriorfan February 11, 2017 8:04 am

    From CoachingSearch.com:

Hawaii: One name to watch for Hawaii’s open spot is Cal Poly defensive backs coach Jacob Yoro.

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … ‘GO BOWS !!!!!

  38. clyde February 11, 2017 8:20 am

808: Nice find. Yoro is in his mid-30s, with a good coaching resume. He’s a UH grad and former all-state linebacker at Saint Louis.
