Lempa is a candidate for Michigan job

Defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa is a candidate for a non-coaching job at Michigan.

Lempa met with Michigan officials this past weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Lempa and his wife own a home in Maryland. He became a grand-father this past fall.

Lempa had worked under Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown at Boston College for three seasons through 2015 and at Maryland in 2009 and 2010. Brown was hired at Michigan in 2016.

Lempa started his second stint as UH defensive coordinator this past season, helping the Rainbow Warriors to a 7-7 record, highlighted by the victory in the Hawaii Bowl. He previously ran UH’s defense for three seasons through 2002.

Good luck Coach Lempa. Sad to lose you.

  2. naks8 February 6, 2017 9:32 am

If the opportunity is there, gotta take it

  3. cocobean February 6, 2017 9:51 am

    Rich Ellerson.

  4. Bryson February 6, 2017 9:52 am

    I’m guessing it’s Tony Tuioti’s old job

  5. snaphook808 February 6, 2017 10:27 am

Cal Lee as DC then JJ becomes head coach at SLH.

  6. bowwar February 6, 2017 10:29 am

I liked Lempa, as he still had a youthful enthusiasm about him…I hope he stays, but it’s a better opportunity, then good luck to him. I liked Lempa for doing adjustments during the halftime and he did well considering the players he had. I hope Rolo has a good DC available on his rolo-dex.

  7. haka February 6, 2017 10:38 am

Lempa ain’t leav’in. He’s a coach. He don’t want no stink’in non-coaching position. C’mon Lemps. You’re a coach! So stay and coach and continue the building of pride rock. That’s what you came here for. You’re not done yet. You need to maintain the continuity. It’s why you came. Finish the job! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.
    #:)

  8. Duster February 6, 2017 10:39 am

I hope he stays. He’s onto something special here.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2017 10:47 am

    Stay Coach! Not pau yet!

  10. H-Man February 6, 2017 10:58 am

Money may be a factor here, so it looks like coaching continuity on defense still unsettled with Lampa probably departing. I wonder if Sean Duggan will remain at Hawaii?

  11. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2017 11:06 am

If UH were to lose somebody, I’m sure Duggan is safe.
He’s a good, young coach. And he’s also the defending Golden Apron champ.

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2017 11:09 am

But if you gotta go Coach Lempa, mahalo nui for all you’ve done for UH football! God be with you, where ever you and your family are.

  13. al February 6, 2017 11:16 am

Sounds like an opportunity to move closer to home and the new family. I wouldn’t blame him though he would be tough to replace. I’m glad that this announcement comes after signing day.

    Perhaps Abe deserves a shot.

  14. Jeezy33 February 6, 2017 11:27 am

    1. Celebrating too soon yesterday… Must have been a sick loss. Falcons had it in the bag.

  15. madeinhawaii February 6, 2017 11:27 am

I suppose he went up to interview for Tony Tuioti’s former job. Wish he’d stay, but it’s a lot closer to his home and family and would give him more opportunities to spend time with his new grandchild. Can only wish him the best.

  16. Jeezy33 February 6, 2017 11:28 am

Whoops wrong Dave.. Warrior Dave.. Not Vegas Dave

    Speaking of DCS

Brevard (D-III – NC): Sources tell FootballScoop that former NFL linebacker Kurt Gouveia has joined Bill Khayat’s staff as defensive coordinator. Following a 13 year playing career, Gouveia coached in NFL Europe and was most recently on Norm Chow’s staff at Hawaii.

Plenty of cheap housing in Michigan.
    Some neighborhoods ghost towns…
But also lots of snow and ice.
Stay here. You are great at half
    time adjustments.

  19. steve p February 6, 2017 11:52 am

Good God, can’t we keep anyone here? Lempa did a very good job for us….I really would like to see him stay. I’m sure Michigan is going to offer him a fortune and he’ll go for it…..

  20. madeinhawaii February 6, 2017 11:53 am

Now that Miano has been cleared of any misdoings. Should Lempa leave, think he would throw in his hat for the DC post?

  21. Derek February 6, 2017 12:01 pm

When you become a grandpa, one thing is you want to be around your grandkid(s). Life is too short. Family is everything. Whatever Coach Lempa wants to do, I wish him the best. Both times he’s worked here he definitely make an impact and improved the defense. These days, college football offenses are hard to stop. I think with an influx of better talent on the defensive side of the ball will improve the defense performance even more. The 2017 recruiting class did that with 5 DL and 13 overall on defense.

  22. Maddog50 February 6, 2017 12:05 pm

After so many years of being in the game Coach Lempa may be willing to entertain other opportunities. I do not read anything into this at all, you have to listen to pitches if they come looking for you-Lemps is a good man he will do what’s right-we gonna be okay. GoWarriors!!!!

  23. BigWave96744 February 6, 2017 12:19 pm

    This guy would be awesome

Seattle Seahawks: Rocky Seto, the assistant head coach for defense on Pete Carroll’s staff the past two seasons, is leaving the staff to enter the ministry, according to the Seattle Times, who add that the team has confirmed the news. Seto has been a part of Carroll’s staff over 16 seasons, starting as USC from 2001-2009 where he held five different roles before joining Carroll in Seattle where he started as a quality control coach on defense before moving to assistant defensive backs, then defensive passing game coordinator, and finally to assistant head coach for defensive in 2015.

  24. kk808 February 6, 2017 12:40 pm

#18: Unfortunately, Hawaii will always be a stepping stone for those hoping to advance their careers.

  25. turfwar February 6, 2017 12:53 pm

All schools lose coaches. Hawaii is not alone. Even Alabama loses coaches every year. It’s the nature of the business.

  26. boolakanaka February 6, 2017 1:00 pm

Rocky was a seven figure assistant at Seattle, and has had numerous offers from both NFL and Top 20 collegiate programs.

  27. Old School Dave February 6, 2017 1:01 pm

I hope he stays, but Mahalo, Coach Lempa, regardless of you decide to do.
Former Nebraska DC (and UH assistant) Mark Banker?

  28. What??? February 6, 2017 1:51 pm

Another example of beating the dead horse – stop bringing up Miano’s name as a possible assistant. Sorry Boola, I know you will disagree.

  29. Warrior Dave February 6, 2017 1:54 pm

I just have to chuckle when people throw out coaching candidates from big schools. Like someone going to take a half million pay cut to Coach in Hawaii.

  30. captain ron February 6, 2017 2:12 pm

Blessings to you, Coach Lempa, in whatever you decide. Thank you for all you’ve done for the Warrior program.

And I’m betting Coach Rolo has already started receiving inquiries and applications for the position. The word is out he has a program on the rise!

Defend Pride Rock. Live Aloha, play Warrior!

  31. Aaron February 6, 2017 2:25 pm

One thing Rolo understands very well that the #1 qualification for anyone he hires onto his staff is that they have to really “want” to be here. He learned this the hard way the first time around as he was trying to balance out the staff and not seem like he was just hiring guys he knew from his time here and ended up losing his OC to BSU. This isn’t a job you take because you are trying to get rich. you take it because you want to be part of something.

With that said, I could see Elimimian being promoted and a DB coach with good recruiting credentials being hired…

  32. amela February 6, 2017 2:27 pm

Yeah forget about Miano he’s a good after the fact coach.

  33. AllG February 6, 2017 2:47 pm

Not sure how much he is making now but would love to see Jeff Ulbrich come back as DC. Would be his first DC job and the chance to coach for his alma matar and bring his wife home we might be able to get a discount on him.

  34. na alii pride February 6, 2017 3:28 pm

I hope Coach Lempa stays too, but if it’s a better situation for him, all the best to him. He did a great job this year, working with little depth and players that needed to learn how to win.

Good luck coach, whatever you decide we’ll all be happy for you.

  35. Inyoface February 6, 2017 3:54 pm

Should go back to a 3-4 defense.

  36. z February 6, 2017 4:05 pm

    Nooooo. Not Lempa. Please….

  37. haka February 6, 2017 4:10 pm

Search on for new coach…Coach Shoji retiring?
    Damn……

  38. SteveM February 6, 2017 4:22 pm

Hate to lose Coach Lempa, but he’s served Hawaii well twice. Good luck to him if he feels its time to migrate east.

In my spectator-only mind, there has been only 3 great defensive coordinators at UH– Larry Price, Bob Wagner, and Greg McMackin. Of those three, Rolo may have the home number of the last, but I suspect JJ would have to be on the caller ID for him to pick up the phone. But one can dream…

  39. j milo February 6, 2017 4:33 pm

I agree with amela…Miano has DC would be a step backwards. While coaching at UH, over 6 coaches were brought in to run the Defense. This should be a good indicator of the limits of his coaching capabilities. We need a seasoned DC with Hawaii ties.

  40. z February 6, 2017 4:37 pm

    And Shoji is retiring?

  41. BowBowl February 6, 2017 4:47 pm

How about Jeff Ulbrich for DC?

  42. z February 6, 2017 4:59 pm

I really liked coach Don Lindsey. I thought he was a really good DC too.

  43. oldtimer808 February 6, 2017 5:23 pm

“Defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa is a candidate for a non-coaching job at Michigan.” Well as far as I read according to ST, Lempa is just a candidate. I suspect with his age and wanting less responsibilities maybe the strong possibility of Lempa leaving appears strong. Until a decision is made, there is no need to worry. If he is hired by Michican, I wish him well.

  44. Buffoman February 6, 2017 5:23 pm

Tomey had a terrific defense coach before Wagner came on board. I believe he went to coach in the CFL.

  45. Bogey February 6, 2017 5:26 pm

We probably couldn’t afford Ulbrich. Bring in someone young, Rolo’s age, who can recruit.

  46. pakipark February 6, 2017 6:01 pm

Jeff Reinebold … DC. But I hope Keven Lempa stays.

  47. Captain Ron February 6, 2017 6:51 pm

Suggestions for a new DC are fine, but it might be good to remember if any of us picked in advance the staff Rolo ended up hiring. And it all turned out pretty well. And we don’t have any idea who the candidates are. I choose to continue trusting his judgement.

  48. kalua pig February 6, 2017 7:28 pm

i hope he gets the job.aloha cuz.

  49. burro sabio February 6, 2017 8:08 pm

I hate when coaches leave because everyone starts pulling names out of their arse, without any regard to whether o not the current head coach has any kind of prior positive relationship with them.

  50. Old School Dave February 6, 2017 8:24 pm

DC job is on the UH job site. Deadline is next Monday, Feb 13.
Got a feeling that Coach Rolo will promote from within his staff.

    http://workatuh.hawaii.edu/Jobs/NAdvert/24485/3396178/1/postdate/desc

  51. hitmanhart February 6, 2017 8:26 pm

Rich Ellerson would be a great fit for hawaii only if coach Keven Lempa goes !!

  52. Abunai February 6, 2017 10:57 pm

    #51

I think Rich Ellerson is past his prime for coaching. The game evolved too much and I don’t think he can change. As much I respect him and his coaching of what he did I think we need new blood.

  53. Darren February 6, 2017 11:47 pm

Best wishes to Coach Lempa. Gonna miss his energy and enthusiasm out on the field. Noticed that he’s always teaching and he brings such a positive vibe to the field. Should be really interesting to see who Coach Rolo taps as the new DC.

  54. al February 6, 2017 11:59 pm

    Saying NO
    to Miano.

That guy is in the middle of that Kaiser HS fiasco that is about explode.

  55. Darren February 7, 2017 12:09 am

It’d be really nice to get a younger, high energy DC that will stay in the position for longer than 2 years (gotta stop the revolving door). Relentless recruiter is a must.

  56. Maddog50 February 7, 2017 5:55 am

If Coach Lempa is gone so be it. He did a great job with the roster as it stood. Would not be surprised at all if Coach Duggan made the giant leap to fill his role. Too new, too young you say? I think all along he was being taught and mentored by Lemps-Coach Rolovich will make sure he right call and fill it the right way. Get those tickets while you can, gonna be a great ride-“We were great once…………..great again!!!! GoWarriors!!!!!

  57. Ipu Man February 7, 2017 7:45 am

While it is nice to hire from within and/or a friend from afar,
Defense was UH weakness in far too many games. So hire
the BEST defensive genius out there, young or old, rich or
    poor…

  58. H-Man February 7, 2017 8:01 am

Dick Tomey = Defense. Plus, he bleeds green, Warrior Green.

  59. NorthShoreFan February 7, 2017 9:02 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

What a week! Coach Shoji, Coach Lempa, Coach Trapasso….growing pains?
Got openings for all the coaches here. Hope some apply so we can have “in house” people.

Maddog50…agree. Was hoping with all the great recruits we got we’d be seeing the kind of great D we were used to watching in the past. Don’t know why but I like watching a good offense but when the D show up and make plays, I go nutz!

  60. boolakanaka February 7, 2017 9:03 am

If Lempa does leave, look for Rolo to make a strong play for Ikaika Malloe, presently at Udub as their dline coach. Has great ties for recruiting in the NW, has been a DC three times as well as special teams coordinator. He is seasoned, but still in his early 40s, and fits the mode of a Rolo assistant.

    Ikaika, holumua back home!

  61. NorthShoreFan February 7, 2017 9:23 am

Great suggestion! Would Ikaika be willing to leave the area and facilities to come and make a name for himself here? Is there any coaches on the team who may be able to fill Coach Lempa’s position?

  62. ponojr February 7, 2017 9:33 am

    #60
Good Idea, but I don’t think UH can afford him anymore. Wasn’t he on Rolo’s original DC list before Lempa? I thought I read that somewhere.

  63. Old School Dave February 7, 2017 9:36 am

Interesting speculation. Continuity is important, IMHO. Eliminian? Suiaunoa?Dugan?

Wisconsin’s newly named DC has only a year of coaching and is 2 years removed from playing in the NFL.

  64. Old School Dave February 7, 2017 9:39 am

Could be wrong, but didn’t Rolo want to hire Ikaika Malloe from USU, until UW came into the pic ($280,000 salary as D-line coach)?

  65. boolakanaka February 7, 2017 9:47 am

Money will always be an issue for a seasoned coach. I’m not certain on Lempa’s salary here, but I am thinking it was between 170-low 200s (anyone able to confirm or dispute that??) Ikaika is making 280K, at present.

My guess, is that if UH could get in the low 200s (200-235K) , it would still be compelling…

  66. WarriorAZ February 7, 2017 10:05 am

Look for Rolo to at least interview Adam Boyd. He is currently a practicing attorney in Phoenix, but he has done stints at ASU and UCLA. It would be nice to have some Pac12 experience. He could also open up pipelines in AZ and SoCal.
