Lakalaka on track to play

It appears running back Steven Lakalaka has been cleared to play in Saturday’s road game against San Diego State.

Lakalaka left the Wyoming game with what was termed concussion-like symptoms. But he reportedly passed baseline tests. He practiced this morning.

The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon.

I think that our team will be in a great state of mind and will play well. The big concern is to keep Ikaika standing upright and in the game, therefore I believe that we will be running the ball more utilizing our RBs along with short, quick developing pass plays to minimize his sack exposure. TE may play a larger role this game. Linebackers will have to play tough to stop their strong running game. I look forward to a exciting hard fought game ending with a WIN! Go Bows Go!

    Good morning everyone!

    Good news on Lakalaka!
This is going to be an interesting game…

  4. (Jesse)James October 16, 2014 10:14 am

Whoa…didn’t know the new post was up….LOL

    From previous post:

“I thought I read that Lakalaka was cleared to play for this game??? Or did I just imagine that. I think we’ll need to rotate him, St. Juste, and Vele just to mix things up. Vele is a big back that has the right attitude about securing the ball. I think the fumble was just an exchange problem.

Anyways, play smart, play hard, and play like a champion today!!!!”

  5. kawika49 October 16, 2014 10:15 am

BOOM Lakala BOOM, BOOM Lakala BOOM, BOOM Lakala BOOM. Good news.

  6. hatakeman October 16, 2014 10:21 am

This is good news. Just hope he is kept out ot the the game if symptoms reappear.

  7. A-House October 16, 2014 10:26 am

    Great news about Lakalaka!!!

Yet, caution should be used on who starts the game at RB – I would used Vele for power running and Saint Juste for “busting the outside”

Too soon for additional hits on the head – use Lakalaka sparingly to protect this young man from further damage(s).

  8. BTO October 16, 2014 10:27 am

I always thought St Juste was a legitimate big time back that did not get his opportunity. Florida produces such great RB’s and St. Juste has just beginning to hit his stride. He has that threat to break big plays and he can turn the corner on the perimeter that Hawaii has been lacking the last two years. He has proven he deserves at least 20-25 carries a game. I hope Wynn considers splitting the carries with Lakalaka. Also that small scatback 5-6 dude Pereese Joas impressed me also. Heck let them all carry the ball. Oregon State has used low to ground short backs for years with success.

  9. gobows October 16, 2014 10:35 am

    what happened to Kennedy?

  10. islandman October 16, 2014 10:51 am

Prudent policy would be to keep Lakalaka out, since he was banged up in the head in the last game.
Looks like Beau will be playing.

  11. letsgowarriors October 16, 2014 10:58 am

FYI, Benny Fonua started 2 games in 2012.

  12. Bryson October 16, 2014 11:12 am

I hope the medical staff has done their due diligence in protecting Lakalaka I was at the game and the play happened right in front of me and it was a pretty loud crash…

  13. HALEAKALA October 16, 2014 11:15 am

I hope that Lakalaka really is okay. Playing just one week after a big hit on the head does not seem right. We have some other good backs.

  14. 3-Prong October 16, 2014 11:29 am

    Is Ikaika ok. Practiced today?

  15. Andrew October 16, 2014 11:38 am

I really don’t see them using Lakalaka too much. Even if he is cleared to play, it’s not smart to play him right after having concussion-like symptoms. He’s key to the team and we all want to win, but a player’s health and well being trumps the game.

  16. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 11:47 am

Are they departing on the 2:10 flight to LAX? If they are, scheduled to arrive in LAX 10:10 p.m. Los Angeles time. Flight # If you are reading this in San Diego, maybe you can give us a count on the possible attendance for Saturday’s game.

What hotel are they staying in? Best Western Inn Hotel.
Roberts tour will be driving them around in a bus.
How many is on the trip? 64 players maximum.
Are they going to Disneyland or Knotts Berry Farm? When?
    $90/ticket
comment if you want, nothing to do with KIF. Why again? big deal?

  17. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 12:23 pm

17 times to Los Angeles since high school. Know about KIF, but live in O’ahu, Pearl City High School is where it was since. I’m not a travel agent. Just interested in who is going and why they choose to go with the UH football team. Important Travel information in San Diego from Hawai’i. Have a good trip and enjoy yourselves. Big deal?

  18. NotNasti October 16, 2014 12:42 pm

I was not aware that people in “red roof” had access to the internet.

  19. Darren October 16, 2014 1:01 pm

I like the old school UH cap that Coach Moses always wears.

Noticed Rod York was on the UH sideline…sharing a chuckle with Coach Chow during the game.

What role does Al Noga serve on the team? Vounteer coach? Interesting to see him on the sidelines…still looks seriously intimidating.

  21. bowwar October 16, 2014 1:12 pm

Safe travels Warriors!!! Stop the run in San Diego and we’ll have a chance in beating the Aztecs. The Aztecs have a young secondary, so there may be room to exploit them in play-action passes. Our OL has to be stout and give Woolsey time to pass. IMUA Warriors!

  22. Shoko October 16, 2014 1:34 pm

One thing about San Diego State is that they always seem to recruit excellent running backs. If the Warrior D can limit Pumphrey’s total yards under a 100 that would be very impressive. I just might have a year like Kapri Bibbs.

  23. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 2:05 pm

    Tiki’s to do list

    pass the ball.
    play better defense.
    extra effort on special teams.
    3rd down conversions 100%

To win the game vs. San Diego State on Saturday

  25. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 3:09 pm

NY Jets 6 New England Patriots 7 end of 1st. SF Giants 3 and St. Louis Cardinals 1. I don’t think communication will do good if Hawai’i is too banged up. Defensively, keep it under 20 points to give your team a chance to win.

  26. Boolakanaka October 16, 2014 3:11 pm

    18-notnasti –good one!!

  27. gobows October 16, 2014 3:13 pm

    23 tiki

they convert every 3rd down…harding wont be punting, hadden wont be kicking fg’s, and its a guarantee win…but nobody goes 100% on 3rd down.
    How about…
    no turnovers.
    dont give up long plays.
    score tds.
    break the road losing streak.

  28. st. anthony trojan October 16, 2014 3:30 pm

all teams are banged up at this point… some more then others…
just that replacements.. have to show their worth.. after all that practice..
and i am sure some ‘will rise to the top’ in this game…win or lose..
    but pray 4 the win..

    Hawaii…49
    others….17

  29. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 3:35 pm

I think they meant with us who are locally grown. They all need to work together. Doesn’t make sense to classify them as us, and then go ahead and put them in. They should just put in a player because he is better and not mean us. I am only for the better player playing. Us means nothing to me. With that in mind, I hope they follow tiki’s to do list.

  30. st. anthony trojan October 16, 2014 3:50 pm

    yea ‘go bows’
them long plays really hurt us bad.
is all the difference in losing 3… n winning those 3..

I hope the airplane cockpit didn’t forget that there is a hurricane Ana downgrade to storm Ana in the vicinity of Hawaiian waters. 2,256 miles to Los Angeles. They may run into some turbulence if the plane smashes head on to the storm. All screws on the airplane are in place, hopefully.

    #36. No.

  38. Tempmanoa October 16, 2014 4:58 pm

We are closely matched with SDSU. The have a better offense, but it is all run. They have a good defense. Our running game does not match SDSU’s, but we a better passing attack than they do. Therefore, we can play defense and keep running against them all game to a standoff or low scoring game like most of the Rice Game and end up losing. SDSU is likely to get the edge if we simply run since Rice has defense and very good running game. We need to use our passing game which is our strength against SDSU’s inexperienced secondary. That way we have a better margin over them and a chance to win– running has the danger of turning into a game like Rice, passing gets us more of a game like Wyoming.

  39. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 5:14 pm

Let me know when the team reaches LAX. They might have passed the storm in the Pacific Ocean by now. Lucky them. It’s a 5 hour flight. I’ll be waiting on their arrival in LAX, if nothing went wrong on the plane to LAX.

  40. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 5:49 pm

If you threaten me on the blog, it is useless. I’m still smarter. If it continues, there are lots of flight more to the mainland that can go wrong with their airplane. That’s the thought? Right?

  41. nutmegger October 16, 2014 6:09 pm

25′ – 40′ waves predicted for Big Island.

  42. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 6:28 pm

Hawaii News Now has the storm Ana about 100 miles south off Big Island. Giants beat Kolten Wong. Taylor is chicken to fly. And Ana threaten flights out/into Hawai’i. I felt the same way not needed was Tanaka, Chris. Not known where on the map they are still. Keep in touch.

  43. J.V. Sr. October 16, 2014 6:44 pm

So proud of this kid. Lakalaka has that old school mentality. If one limb is out of service, I still have the other three to work with. The bloodline flows strong just like his pop’s and uncles once did back in the days at Kaimuki, Kahuku, Castle and McKinley. If you can recall names like, Manu Lakalaka, Mosese & Sione Tupou, 1996 All-State 2-way athlete Mckinley’s LB/RB Solomon Lealao who is the younger, Brother of Steven’s Mother, Sarena. Her two older Brothers, Mungy & Henry played at Castle and later transfered to Mckinley High School from the mid-late 80’s. What a blessing it is to have a strong athletic family bloodline. Truly bleesed!

    Keep it going Lakalaka…….BOOM!!!

    GO BOWS!!!

  44. $ October 16, 2014 7:08 pm

Mosese Tupou had a body like Falaniko Noga. What does tiki808 think?

  45. A-House October 16, 2014 7:15 pm

my geography in rusty, but I believe that the Warriors are flying “away” and not into the storm – flight plan to LAX, why not straight to San Diego, takes the plane to the North-east pattern – Ana is moving North-west and 100 miles from the Big Island – the twain shall never meet!!!

did not Hawaiian have a direct flight into San Diego?

speaking of Hawaiian Airlines – with all the millions they collect for baggage fees, change of plans fees, and cancellations – why not give $5 million to UHAD to cover the “travel expense” of visiting MWC football teams? it’s our $$ that they keep and pay NO taxes.

1st qtr of 2014 or was it the 2nd qtr – they collected some $17,000,000.

  46. A-House October 16, 2014 7:20 pm

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…bootiful night.

    Great news about Lakalaka!

    Sly and the Family Stone….

    Stevies’ getting stronger

    He gonna take you higher…lol!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  49. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 8:33 pm

#6 Jake Rodriques 6-3 has to get pass Hawai’i, Nevada, Idaho, Boise State, Airforce, San Jose State to reach 9-3. I would think with Jake it he would be the deciding factor over Hawai’i. Guaranteed loss automatic and Hawai’i’s hopes are diminished. 70,561 seating and maybe not close for this match up. Did Hawai’i reach there yet? Favor is in San Diego’s territory and not Hawai’i to take. What’s happening, are they alive?

    Kids, don’t drink and blog

  51. pollypicador October 16, 2014 8:51 pm

As quick as I was to throw JI under the bus, I can also see that the player is contrite for his indiscretion. On Tuesday he offered this apology (which I respect):

“I apologize to my coaches and teammates, to my family, to the university and to our fans.” Iosefa said on Tuesday, “Coach Chow constantly reminds us that it’s a privilege to be a student-athlete here at the University of Hawaii.”

The repetition of “beating of a dead horse” needs to continue in regards to DUI.

    Don’t ever stop.

The best scenario is that maybe a blog reader read about JI’s ordeal and it helped that person in the future think twice about getting behind the wheel after drinking.

The next best scenario would have all the enablers that watched silently in the past (as their friend, classmate, team mate, patron) …speaks up in the future.

    It hurts.

    But it needs to heal.

The best JI can do now, and this should be his life’s work, is persuade others not to make the mistake that he did. This will make him grow as a better person.

    Apologies accepted.

  52. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 8:54 pm

I apologize for my opinions when I say KIF sucks. Jake Rodriques is continental. Hawai’i will have to over come him. “Flight Of The Phoenix” Kaua’i is too chicken …? They’ll need to fight smarter. Big deal on Hawaii News Now. Really?

  53. Waikapu October 16, 2014 9:07 pm

No apologies necessary tiki. It’s your world baby we just living in it. Be careful son (34) and (35) Dept. of Homeland Security going be knocking.

amazing how many are to lazy to look up details of Ana. within the 24 hrs Ana has hardly moved from 14 degree latitude and the barometric pressure Is rising, and wind speed is 60 mph or less. it don’t take a rocket scientist or government hysteria to look at what is happening with Ana. Tonight news says Ana will miss Hawaii, heck, if you had been following Ana, you probably could figure it out yourself. If you not sure of 14 degree latitude, look at the world map.

  55. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 9:25 pm

2 flights going to either BI or Maui or California in the last 2 1/2 hours. Building we live in is right next to a beacon in the outer marker close to Waikik area Ala Wai drainage area. What is happening HIA?

  56. Tiki808 October 16, 2014 9:41 pm

That’s because they’ll look like a programmer on a blog and for being ashamed. 5 flights in 2:40 hour/minutes. Hurricane or storm must be happening. Wow! Same deal every time. I’ll be here all night.

  57. kev-1 October 16, 2014 9:54 pm

Driving under the influence seems like such a cut and dry situation in which people would be so easily served to “just say no” and call for a ride. However, anyone who has ever had too much to drink and driven NEVER thinks that they can’t handle or can’t drive. That is the problem in itself.

There is no simple solution. Sorry. Just isn’t. The people that say “just call if you need a ride” either have never gone out for drinks with their car or just plain don’t drink.

I’m not saying that it makes it ok. I’m really not. I’m just saying if it were easy to make the decision to not drive when impaired by alcohol, people would never drink and drive. Especially when you’re young. The maturity to make those decisions comes with age.

I’m just thankful that he didn’t get into an accident and hurt himself or anyone else.

Do you mind telling the cockpits coming into HIA to fly higher than the buildings. Really low due to the storm expecting on O’ahu. 4th in 4 hours.

  64. Tiki808 October 17, 2014 12:04 am

70,561 seats in San Diego State Aztec stadium. Built in 1967 and upgraded recently 1985 to the amount. Really great program going in San Diego. Better than Hawai’i. They can afford to have it. I’ll be watching the game. Look for Jake Rodrigues 6-3 217ibs. to tear up the league. Still the front runners are them.
