Kemp: From backup to MVP

Marcus Kemp has come a long way since being Chris Gant’s backup who blocked the safety every other play as a freshman to becoming the 19th Warrior β€” and first since 2011 β€” to amass 1,000 receiving yards in a season. On Sunday night, he won the Alec Waterhouse Award as the Warriors’ most valuable player.

Congratulations to all University of Hawaii Warrior’s football players and their individual award.
Those that are returning next year, as a long time staunch Warrior football fan and supporter, I’d like to see you (returnees) start building yourself for next season. It is my hope that everyone (starters, potential starters for 2017) will start training together on the school campus (stay in Hawaii) and prepare for 2017. A team that sticks together will undoubtedly show that results at game time.
I really believe next season our 2017 Warrior football team will take their MWC division championship and be ranked in the top 25. Just about everyone on the Offensive side of the ball will be returning. Our Defensive side will undoubtedly be much improved. There will be no blow-outs against our Warriors in 2017.
This season our Warriors record should have read 8 wins and five losses. The New Mexico lobo and UNLV games at Aloha Stadium were lost in the closing minute of the game by fumbles with our Warriors a few points ahead on both games.
    Hana hou Warriors!!!!!

  7. H-Man November 28, 2016 8:49 am

By any standard, this was a successful season. Congratulations to all the Warriors !!! Now just waiting for an official announcement of Hawaii’s selection to the Hawaii Bowl.

  8. Maddog50 November 28, 2016 8:59 am

Cole Carter getting an award makes me want to think he is already in the mix as an outside lb/DL. Remember the early pics of a guy that looked out of shape when he joined. Some of the guys not on the depth chart now will be big surprises. Don’t think Kingjames Taylor played a down but was insurance so in effect a RS even though #2 at TKL. As far as the shot at Allen-he was by far the most productive offensive lineman and pretty sure the least penalized. I think the last game was an aberration even though I recall a holding penalty and a tripping penalty called on him in the same game-both were non calls if you watch what goes on regularly in the OL CFB ranks. Congrats to the winners especially Dejon Allen! GoWarriors!!!!

  9. PONO November 28, 2016 9:12 am

    Paniolo,
I like your enthusiasm but top 25 seems a little ambitious. We do return most of the offense but we lose RJ, Kemp, Paul Harris and Lakalaka. DSJ has not been able to stay healthy throughout a season, but Freddy Holly looks exciting. We also have Ulu-Perry joining the line which should be huge. I think we can replace RJ but I’m concerned about finding that power goaline back to score TDs like Lakalaka and a new go to receiver stepping up. Barker and Ewaliko are not the answer IMO.

  10. Derek November 28, 2016 9:29 am

What? No award after Fred Von Appen and Norm Chow! Von Appen read a lot of books or history buff, so you can have an award for the Book Worm award. As far as Chow, how about the best Asian UH player. Could be Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, etc. And how about the Down Under Award for the best Australian or New Zealand player on the team. Just thinking out of the box. Hehe!

Good luck to the coaches trying to get the recruits that we need for next year’s signing class.

If Tua Tagovailoa wants to start as a true freshman he should consider LSU. Alabama’s Jalen Hurts, a true freshman, is a bonafide Heisman Trophy Candidate. If Tua wants to sit, that’s okay, but I’m sure he wants to play. Wishing him well.

  11. NorthShoreFan November 28, 2016 9:46 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

BEEG MAHALO! to the coaching staff and WARRIORS who made this season exciting. Yes, there were a couple that got away but the coaches kept the team focused and competitive. Looking for a “different” team next season. It all starts now!. Get better Warriors and…IMUA!

  12. Rodney November 28, 2016 10:03 am

Con gears Dejon Allen Congrats to all Warriors!
    Thanks coach Chow and
all his recruits! In my opinion
    Tua will probably
    beat that freshman Qb!!!
Think about it Tua with that
O line and recievers and defense..Don’t doubt what that kid can do.Just watch and see.

  13. A-House November 28, 2016 10:55 am

    Flying O:

wow, you get all worked up/caught up in a simple statement about running into a “stacked” defense

do I do all the things you said, HELL NO!!!!!!!!

but, I watch the offensive plays called and wonder why the OC does call “up-da-middle” against a stacked front 7 — what’s wrong with telling your opponent that you don’t run between tackles when it’s a stacked defense? then, call up-da-middle running plays

or, simply call other plays and when your opponent stacks the outside, call running plays between the tackles.

as Burro said, I would call a plan for a “tank regiment” to attack an infantry Division knowing what weapons they have and how they deploy their troops; yet have to be careful because infantrymen have shoulder fired anti-tank weapons

  14. A-House November 28, 2016 11:02 am

Naole going to visit the 6′ 7″ OL commit and solidify his commitment to UH? dats great!!!

believe he joins UH in January 2017 — has NCAA cleared him to practice? — hope UH does not encounter another delay like they did for the “rush DE” [ dang, I keep forgetting his name ].

with his speed and toughness — how about a MLB position for him? – 6′ 4″ with 4.5 speed and 245 #s.

  15. HawaiiMongoose November 28, 2016 11:20 am

What’s interesting to me is that Ito rather than McDonald or Holly or Ulu-Perry was named the top scout player for offense. Is that just because of his work ethic or are we likely to see Genta get some carries next season?

  16. keliandkawika November 28, 2016 11:23 am

Question: If Scott Frost leaves UCF for Oregon, what are the chances of Milton transferring to UH?

  17. Huh??? November 28, 2016 11:24 am

A-troll give it a rest already. Obviously you don’t know a thing about football. Go play with your tin soldiers.

No one has agreed with your opinions. In fact, you are probably losing a lot respect out here.

And you call yourself a supporter of the program?
I think by now that all of players and staff think very little of you.

    Get a life bull.

  18. BigWave96744 November 28, 2016 11:36 am

Next year I hope there is the Greg McMackin Award, given to the Toughest Mother on the team.

Early candidates would be Fred Ulu-Perry and a return of Kennedy Tulimasealii

How about the Coach Norm Chow “We Just Gotta Work Harder” Award?

  22. DaveLetterMan November 28, 2016 12:34 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!
Congrats to the seniors, the award winners and the whole team for their efforts this season.
    Go Warriors!! We going bowling!!

Nuff with the “up da middle” argument. Time to move on. Let the coaches coach and the players play. You can criticize the players, coaches, play calling, etc. but it gets old when it drags on. Say what you got to say and move on.

  23. Derek November 28, 2016 12:34 pm

My bad. I thought Cole Carter was black. Sorry about that. Hope Cole is a very good pass rusher and defensive end. Congratulations on his Scout Team Award. To win that award coaches must like his work ethic and play on the practice field and in scrimmages. Come On, Man. How many Carters that are athletes do you know are white. The only Carters I know are women, Linda Carter and Dixie Carter. I must be only thinking about Anthony Carter in basketball or Anthony Carter in football, or Dexter Carter (former Florida State/ex. 49ers RB), or Coach Carter (Samuel Jackson in the movie). Hehe! Have a great day.

  24. Aaron November 28, 2016 12:36 pm

Mongoose – I think the scout team award is for players who truly embody what it means to be a real scout team guy – a guy that comes to practice and makes everyone better, but may not ever get into the playing rotation. Guys like Ulu-Perry will have a chance to win those other awards like Offensive MVP. The scout team award may be the only chance to recognize a guy like Genta.

  25. Derek November 28, 2016 12:38 pm

I nominate the Coach Norm Chow award to Head Coach Nick Rolovich. He wins the award for “We’re Still Chasing Championships”.

  26. A-House November 28, 2016 12:42 pm

A-House: If you’re looking to buy Hawaii Bowl tickets, they’re running a Cyber Monday special: $20 end zone seats for $10 plus $1 ticket charge.

  29. markm November 28, 2016 1:29 pm

Is Tua a qualifier? what was his SAT/ACT scores, or his GPA?

  30. A-House November 28, 2016 1:34 pm

    Clyde:

    thank you for the information.

MasaBoy has a source for the $10 end zone tickets.

we are waiting for “official” announcement UH will be in the Hawaii Bowl.

last time we went, SMU just demolished Rolo and Nevada — SMU WRers just ran past Reno’s DBees — we were in the “blue” section, South end zone.

best I can recall, does not the Hawaii Bowl offer UH season ticket holders first if they want the same seats?

  31. Ipu Man November 28, 2016 1:43 pm

Bet Genta “Grunt” Ito won because he runs a lot like Humphrey.
He also bounces off defenders and changes directions on a dime.
And like that Japanese one-eyed good luck doll that doesn’t stay
down (because of its big round okole) he may be UH good luck charm
    next year. πŸ™‚

Aranda – story not confirmed yet. ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH.

One of the reasons LSU felt comfortable investing in Ed Orgeron is his recruiting prowess. Just a few days into his tenure as full-time coach, Orgeron has landed a huge commitment from his top immediate target.

Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has reportedly agreed to a new three-year deal to stay on Orgeron’s staff after one year at LSU, assuming the title of “associate head coach.” The specific terms are not known and the contract has not been signed, according to ESPN and The Advocate, but the news confirms Orgeron’s promise to LSU fans from his introductory press conference.

“We have some great coaches on our staff right now, led by Dave Aranda,” Orgeron told reporters on Saturday. “He is the best coordinator in football, and we plan on him being with us. I spoke to him this morning. We’re happy that Dave’s an LSU Tiger, I promise you that.”

Also, rumors have it that LSU trying to get Lame Kiffin.

  34. A-House November 28, 2016 2:21 pm

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to “bowl” we go — 12/24/2016 Aloha Stadium.

do current UH season ticket holders get “first dives” for their current seats like before?

  35. A-House November 28, 2016 2:26 pm

walking from Aiea Elementary on Saturday around 4:45 pm – noticed a rather wide-open lot, but it was full on the way out

spoke with a friend who says he pays $300 to Na Koa for the privilege to park on the “outer rim” – told him many empty spaces and seem like a waste if UH wanted to attract more fans to games

I was wrong — so surprised to see a full lot!! dats BEEG BUCKS!!!

  36. A-House November 28, 2016 2:29 pm

  38. Old School Dave November 28, 2016 4:31 pm

Congrats to the UH players and coaches. Gee, everyone looks all “Holo Holo Kine” dressed up at the banquet – nice thing about having it held at a hotel. Many smiling faces.

Oregon will likely fire their HC, Mark Helfrich, not officially announced, but a search has apparently begun. Helfrich has an $11 million buyout, though – ouch! I guess Uncle Phil can cover that? I wonder if Lane Kiffin is a candidate for the Ducks HC job? I also wonder if a certain prep QB from here may be wavering in his commitment?

  39. Boya_jr November 28, 2016 4:33 pm

So proud of the team and what it represents: Hawaii and UH.

  40. ai-eee-soos November 28, 2016 4:59 pm

#38. Yup, and LSU is supposed to be interested in Kiffin as OC.

And, yes I hope a certain prep QB from here may be wavering in his commitment.

    mo bettah stay home !!!

  41. Old School Dave November 28, 2016 6:04 pm

Just for the record, the Senior Walk was started in 1979 by Nelson Maeda (Kailua grad and former walk-on DB). Other seniors included Tom Tuinei, Al “Buzz” Preston, and the late Jerry Scanlon, which was the Bows first year in the original WAC. Maeda just wanted to walk around the stadium and take it all in one last time, as he told then HC Dick Tomey. The next season Blane Gaison and others in the 1980 class continued with the tradition.

  42. Old School Dave November 28, 2016 6:07 pm

BTW, UH beat a Mark Malone led Arizona State team in the 79 finale at Aloha Stadium (the year that Frank Kush got fired). I think that Nelson Maeda also had an interception. St Louis grad Wayne Apuna was a freshman starter at LB for the Sun Devils, but was booed after making several animated tackles vs UH.

  43. SailorBlue November 28, 2016 6:32 pm

Okay everybody. We’re all set for the Hawaii Bowl TGate. I stopped on the way home and reserved Cabana A (normal place). One more chance for good food, friends, fun and fuud. WAHOO! GO BOWS!

    Flying O:

wow, you get all worked up/caught up in a simple statement about running into a β€œstacked” defense”

I’m not getting worked up at all. I don’t know why you think I am. I’m just stating that the questions you’re asking and the pronouncements about what the team is doing are pretty technical (why isn’t play x called instead of play y? if the defense is stacking the LOS, then why aren’t coaches doing x,y, and z? is a change in coaching staff required?), which leads me to believe that you’re studying film.

If you’re not, then I have no idea what the basis of your argument is.

  50. winning November 28, 2016 8:43 pm

Problem with allegations against KT because it involves an offense of “moral turpitude”, and that is very bad!!
