Maybe the Mountain West likes UH after all.

First, a bye was scheduled after the four non-conference games and before the MW opener against Nevada.

Now, the Warriors will face New Mexico’s triple-option offense a week after defeating the only other MW team that runs a similar ground attack. The Warriors can still keep the notes from Saturday’s victory over Air Force .

UH’s victory over Air Force was significant because it showed the road isn’t such a scary β€” or un-winnable β€” place. And while it could be viewed as “luck” that a kicker who never misses missed a field-goal attempt as time expired in regulation, it also seems that there is luck, good fortunate, good mojo or whatever in every successful season.

The Warriors do not appear to have knockout power. But they are crafty fighters who have the potential to do enough good things. If anything, they have been relevant entertainment in October, and that hasn’t happened in long time.

Just got home(Chicago) after 7am flight. More excited about Warrior win than Cubs victory! Said it before so one more time. The early interception kept points off the board, the fumble recovery that lead to only 3 points, and the 2nd int shunted a drive…..this game should have been a 10 point victory nullifying the missed field goal storyline. Mark my words best is yet to come!!!

    Great Morning All!

Proof that the Air Force cannot effectively use a tank when it counts. 😈

Been saying it since the last HC, “I jus like feel like ‘get chance’.”

    Eh, guess what?

    Get chance!

    Maddog:
Oh, the missed FG was a better storyline.
Plus, it gave Brown-Kemp a chance to add two more TDs.

  6. Stephen Tsai October 23, 2016 7:27 am

Not sure how these things go, but my pick for player of the week is Malachi Mageo. He had 14 tackles, but more importantly, he was disruptive enough to force Romine to pitch early numerous times.

  7. Inyoface October 23, 2016 7:31 am

I hope oceanic can fix the broadcasting of UH games in the mainland. I’ve seen way more other MWC teams play than Hawaii.

  8. tongo October 23, 2016 7:50 am

#7 Agree. Can get other MWC teams but no UH games?

  9. Petey808 October 23, 2016 7:56 am

Great win by the Warriors! Hey did I miss something…. I didn’t hear Kalakaua timoteo’s name called. Is he ok?

  10. 808SEC October 23, 2016 8:12 am

Agree! Great win for the Warriors! Unfortunately, most people on the mainland don’t know about it, because they didn’t see it.

  11. Ohana Hawaii October 23, 2016 8:28 am

GO WARRIORS! I love what are doing this year!. My friends that works in a casino sports books said that? About ten people had put down $1,000 to 5,000 on Air Force to beat Hawaii over 15 point. I was laughing all day! . Don’t ever put Hawaii down this year or next year to come! .

  12. justsomeguy October 23, 2016 8:33 am

Does anyone know where I could perhaps watch a recorded version? I’ve been unable to watch the past few games live, as I live on the East coast. Any help appreciated.

  13. Ohana Hawaii October 23, 2016 8:35 am

WARNING! All you gamblers from Hawaii!. Because really seriously care when coming to Las Vegas now days!. In the pass three months they were shooting in the strip casino. On Friday they’re were a killing at Caesars Palace. I just want no one to get hurt here!. It been happening in all casino down on the strip .

  14. H-Man October 23, 2016 8:36 am

Malachi is a good pick for POW, but hard to overlook Kemp. As a group, the O-line had a good game on offense; the secondary on defense.

  15. Manoa Mist October 23, 2016 8:41 am

Is this where we get to ask Rolo questions? If so, I’d like to ask him if he’d make out with me? I’m not a gay man, and I wouldn’t give him any tongue, but I really feel like kissing him on the lips. It’s very difficult for even lifetime UH fans to support a stubborn, grumpy old man. It’s very easy to support a good guy, a guy who wants to recruit other good guys to play for your school. Be cool but kill ’em on the field. Love that. We support Rolo win or lose. But if he wins, well, that’s different. Give me that tongue Rolo.

  16. cocobean October 23, 2016 8:49 am

Talk about digging deep. The defense was on the field for 97 snaps at altitude no less and still gave their best effort on snaps 94, 95, 96 and 97.

  17. Imua808 October 23, 2016 9:12 am

Manoa Mist, WTH kind of gross question is that? You are a man who wants to make out with Rolo?

  18. Inyoface October 23, 2016 9:13 am

Or hopefully ESPN will start noticing and pick up more games for Hawaii.

  19. Inyoface October 23, 2016 9:16 am

  20. Letsgowarriors October 23, 2016 9:29 am

Who wears #90 on the team?

  21. Maddog50 October 23, 2016 10:26 am

#90 was Matt Norman he switched uniforms I think during the game. Did not see him on the field but may have been on special teams. I was too engrossed in the action to get all details.

  22. not Sean October 23, 2016 10:55 am

    Correct me if I’m wrong…
Ironic. I remember Jason Elam missing a walk off game winner field goal against Air Force during his career here. The ball went dead center and then tailed sharply to the right at the goalpost like it hit an invisible wall. We ended up losing that one. Or was it a tie?

  23. Bryson October 23, 2016 11:06 am

Hats off to the Warriors for continuing to fight through adversity…The Defense played nearly lights out yesterday and put us in enough positions to where if the offense managed to do their part we wouldn’t have gone to OT…The offense showed up in OT which was great but I’d like to see more consistent execution it seemed like we would get the ball.moving and then stall out…All in all the scary part is Hawai’i is yet to play a complete game in all 3 phases but when that does happen other teams better look out….

  24. M L Warrior October 23, 2016 11:13 am

#20 Matthew Norman is wearing #90 to be eligible on special teams play an on eligible down linemen for jumbo package, coaches request.

    #90

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Sun is up and getting hot. Trades are a blowing. Warriors faced some challenges and prevailed. Yes, it’s a Bootiful Day!
Next up the Lobos. What happened yesterday was yesterday. Time to get ready for this Saturday. Practice, focus, execute, be disciplined, BELIEVE and get the blood going.
New day, new game, new challenges…IMUA WARRIORS!

  26. warriorfan October 23, 2016 12:05 pm

#21, that was 1989, Elam missed a FG to win and we ending up in a tie with AF, that was the game Jamal Farmer rushed for something like 250 yards.

Great win boys, would have loved to see it but winning made the painful experience of listening to Bobby Curran a little more bearable (not really)

    Go Warriors.

  27. Maddog50 October 23, 2016 12:14 pm

With the recent dismissal at FSU there will be at least 2 more dismissals. As I recall Deyruter had a hefty paycheck that will be paid thru 2019. Whoever they go after I think this will play into funds available. Nobody wants to see anybody lose there position but it is the nature of the beast and coaches know it. Would not be surprised to see Bobby Hauck throw his hat in the ring as he currently is on SDSU staff. Always thought he was well above average as a Head Coach,

  28. Akamai Okole October 23, 2016 12:27 pm

According to the article, deRuyter gets $7M for the 2 years remaining on his contract.

    Das a lotta raisins!

  29. Akamai Okole October 23, 2016 12:28 pm

Not sure you would get much backing from Vegas for Hauck’s coaching ability

  30. Akamai Okole October 23, 2016 12:31 pm

    😳

Make that 5 yr contract worth $7.5M

    Remaining 2 yrs worth $3M?

    Still plenny garlic

  31. winning October 23, 2016 12:54 pm

UH matched up well on D. Plus it was a great game plan by Lemp. Stuz is also doing great-didnt think he could do it but has proven me wrong Once in awhile, UH doesn’t have to face 6′ 5″ 340 O lineman. It helps. Also we outmatched them on O line side and that helps. the rest of schedule we gotta outscore em! Hopefully, next year we can recruit big, fast and strong guys for D. GO DRU!! No picks and fumbles.

  32. z October 23, 2016 12:57 pm

A lot of big plays but I thought that Lakalaka’s TD was huge. In the redzone with time running down they gave him the ball 3 times. Air Force had those plays covered but it was pure determination by Steven that got us that TD. There was no hole. He did it on his own.

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid October 23, 2016 2:01 pm

The Warrior Renaissance has begun! You can see it returning ever more each week.

Are we all the way there yet? No. But Pride Rock is on the horizon and the Warriors are on the march.

A play for the ages – that last TD pass from Brown to Kemp to begin the second OT!

I’m sure I’m not alone in believing that we have not yet seen the best of the Warriors yet this season. While their progress and play gets stronger and stronger, exceeding the expectations of many, these guys will only get better.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Lane Kiffin ain’t gonna go to Fresno St to become a Head coach. As a OC at Alabama he already gets paid more then most MWC head coaches. He is already scheduled to make $2.1 million this year. Why leave to a mid major program to get paid less and harder to recruit the players you need.

  35. 808warriorfan October 23, 2016 3:08 pm

This team showed that it does have C-H-A-R-A-C-T-E-R … after that fiasco last week vs UNLV where they came out playing like the had the game won before it started, it seems they learned a valuable lesson in you can’t take your opponent lightly. Congrats to the entire team …

One thing I would personally like to see is when the team comes out of the tunnel at Aloha Stadium that ALL fans be in their seats cheering the team on. It seems at the opening kickoff at least 30-40% of the crown still isn’t in their seats … be nice if everyone was in the stands cheering …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  36. Shoko October 23, 2016 3:16 pm

Congrats to the Warriors on their HUUUGE win. I would have never thought it was possible at the beginning of the season, but I really do think the Warriors will be able to get back to the Hawaii Bowl after beating a team that was favored by 17 points. SDSU and Boise State should be worried.

  37. WarriorNY October 23, 2016 4:04 pm

Pretty cool fact—#14 (kemp) is now #14 in the nation in receiving yards!

  38. Warrior Dave October 23, 2016 4:17 pm

Smell that?? It’s the sweet smell of victory!!

Wasn’t a pretty game for 3 1/2 quarters. But the last 3 seconds of regulation and both OT’s were oscar worthy. Congrats players and coaches!! Lots more work to do so stay hungry and humble.

  39. Former UH Athlete October 23, 2016 4:20 pm

    Kiffin isn’t going to Fresno.

First, he makes as much as Deruyter as Alabama’s OC.

Second, Alabama will probably extend and give him a raise because he has modernized Alabama’s offense and now they are basically unstoppable.

Third, if Kiffin is inticed to take a HC job somewhere, he’s going to command at least $2M (bottom 1/3 power 5 HC money). Fresno won’t pay that much when they still owe Deruyter two more years (about $3M).

  40. cocobean October 23, 2016 4:40 pm

Be prepared. The team has to take the Boy Scout motto to heart for the rest of the season. They have to practice a bit harder and with a little more focus than they did the week before. They should feel good about themselves on how they battled through adversity this week. But they can’t let the feeling that they’ve arrived be a detraction on how they approach practice.

The lessons from the last two games should be every cliche they’ve heard about practice and improvement should ring true to them. I bet if you asked the team if there was any difference in attitude and focus on how they approached practice for the UNLV game and Air game they’d say there was. That’s the lesson for them.

  41. Akamai Okole October 23, 2016 4:46 pm

  42. oneseason October 23, 2016 5:00 pm

Last week’s loss was almost a win, and this week’s win was almost a loss. The Rainbow Warriors are at 4 wins and 4 losses, but it might easily be 5 – 3 or 3 – 5 with a few plays or calls going one way or the other way. The New Mexico State game could well be the same sort of situation. Regardless of the final outcome, this team looks like they will be worthy of playing in a bowl game.

  43. oldtimer808 October 23, 2016 5:19 pm

oneseason we are not playing New Mexico State. We’re playing the University of New Mexico. GO BOWS!!

    Seahawks-Cardinals game was pretty hilarious!

Anyway, the Lobos have yet to win a road game this season with the last one being at Boise State last season. If the Lobos aren’t underdogs going into Halawa, I know someone ready to take out a little home equity and bet big.

  46. cappie the dog October 23, 2016 6:57 pm

Today, I watched the rebroadcast of Hawaii/Air Force, in awe.

I know Hawaii beat Steve Mariucci’s Cal Golden Bears in the early-nineties, but I barely recall anything from that game.

Hawaii is lucky that the refs didn’t flag the DB on Air Force’s last drive after he pushed the receiver down, unnecessarily, on third down.

I would cry conspiracy had that happened. The Mountain West office must hate us. Why else would they send Hawaii to Boise after coming back from Madison?

So amazing what Coach Rolo has accomplished in such a short period of time.

I am actually going to win my 5 over/under bet.

  47. hilosupaman October 23, 2016 7:05 pm

    #15 Manoa Mist

Twisted and hilarious post… Might be one of the few who find it funny but who cares

What a gutsy win by the Warriors, it has long been said that good teams wing the tough games. Started the season against great opponents, got okole kicked, fought back one some games, lose a hearbreaker at home that we should have won… then go on the road against a triple option (lets face it we haven’t done well vs the run) at altitude, 16 pt dogs, 2 OT and still fought for the W!

Rolo is changing the attitude, EXPECT TO WIN! IMUA WARRIORS!

  48. NorthShoreFan October 23, 2016 8:00 pm

Whoa…”AT&T merger with OTW may not do consumers any good”…wonder wat kine deal we goin get…”concern is that anything AT&T might do to make its broadband service stand out by tying it to Time Warner’s programs and films could hurt consumers overall.”
jus no mess wit my Warrior Football…jus make it mo betta.

NorthShoreFan: I’m pretty sure that Time Warner (bought by AT&T) and Time Warner Cable (bought earlier this year by Charter) are two different companies. So Oceanic is now owned by Charter, which is soon to be named Spectrum, or something like that. I know I was confused, too, when I saw the AT&T story.

Of course, it’s reportedly b/c of the new ownership that Oceanic stopped streaming UH football, and we know how anguish that has caused to those on this board.

  53. Na Alii Pride October 23, 2016 10:22 pm

#11 @Ohana Hawaii – So now you “love what are doing this year”? Last week, you said in your kindergarten style writing that UH should go FBS. You also said a whole lot of other unflattering things about UH (although I really shouldn’t say because I couldn’t make out what you were writing) and now you say “don’t ever put Hawaii down this year or next year to come”? Are you for real? You think people aren’t paying attention? Get your head out of your butt, or as you would say “get headed out of butt.”

  54. Na Alii Pride October 23, 2016 10:29 pm

#21, 27 – yes, 1989. Elam Missed for the win, but that was from 48 yards. The game ended in a tie. I remember being at that game. Me and,y friends all thought Wags got too conservative and should have tried to get a little closer. But I guess in the day, 48 was considered a chip shot for Elam. Ahh, memories!

  55. Inyoface October 23, 2016 10:40 pm

It seems like we never convert points in the first possession, I think Paul Harris gives us a better chance at scoring during that time.

  56. ai-eee-soos October 24, 2016 12:41 am

Fresno State ? alum Jeff Tedford for HC.

  57. Maddog50 October 24, 2016 4:03 am

Coupla tings-lost in the shuffle were reference to DB throwing from the 1 downfield to Kemp at the 25 or thirty on first down-the special teams were special and believe me the coverage was tenacious. Stood right there for the one KO that was returned and initial tackle was missed barely but the returner was swarmed. On the touch backs a Warrior wave awaited any return attempt-special teams were outstanding overall!

  58. letsgowarriors October 24, 2016 5:38 am

Maddog50 and M L Warrior, thanks for the info on #90. didnt see him in the game, but he looked pretty huge on the sidelines.

  59. cappie the dog October 24, 2016 5:41 am

    55.

Romine should have tried to gain yards when he centered the ball for the kicker. 31, or 30-yard attempt instead of 32? Game of inches, right?

  60. cappie the dog October 24, 2016 5:51 am

Georgia Southern’s kicker is Korean. He is perfect like Rigoberto Sanchez, along with two other PKs.

  61. Shoko October 24, 2016 6:03 am

I agree with Manoa Mist, though. If Rolo is willing, I’d like to go with Manoa Mist to meet Rolo and give him a make out session… and possibly more. πŸ˜‰

  62. Maddog50 October 24, 2016 6:45 am

For the record NM beat AF in the Cotton Bowl. AF racked up 280 in the air with volley shots to wide open receivers and 260 on the ground. AF D did not show up in first half yielding 35 first half points. To me NM is a cross between AF and UNLV and make most of their yards with options fly sweeps reverses and so on. They lost a starting tackle and a safety plus the option Qb are both nursing injuries. If the Warrior rev up the run game they will eat clock and pile up yards. The only thing that prey on “lobos” are larger packs of the same!!! How bout a pack of “Wild Warriors”? Show up with the same effort plus a notch up and Warriors notch a win! Go Warriors!!!!
