“I want nine John Stocktons”

In building his nine-member coaching staff, Nick Rolovich has this goal:

“I want nine John Stockons,” Rolovich said, referring to the NBA career leader in assists. “I want the assist leaders. I want them to help get the recruits.”

Rolovich has been busy trying to finalize the hirings of the last three assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator, to his coaching staff.

In addition, he is looking to hire a recruiting coordinator to a non-coaching position.

The confirmations are expected this week, perhaps a couple by the end of this work day.

  3. azwarrior22 December 29, 2015 8:27 am

There’s a lot of chewy rolos in a roll for you, if you are choosy about what you chew, real milk chocolate and caramel too, a choo, choo, choo, choo, choo, choo, choo 🙂

  4. WarriorNY December 29, 2015 8:28 am

I wonder if it’s Lempa and Lelie and someone else….

  5. cappie the dog December 29, 2015 8:31 am

    Stockton, not Crotty.

When Utah played the Lakers at the Stan Sheriff Center, I got to see the other John.

  6. Warbow December 29, 2015 8:38 am

I say Rolo hires Jeezy as his recruiting coordinator.

  7. bowwar December 29, 2015 8:41 am

Getting Lempa as the DC would be a “safe” hire…I’m not sure if he’s gonna be as “dynamic” as a younger coach, but he will bring needed experience to the staff. I think the jury is still out on Lelie…Another name that has been getting some airplay is Devon Bess, but I don’t think that’s likely due to some of his personal issues.

  8. bowwar December 29, 2015 8:44 am

Recruiting coordinator will be a critical pick…I wonder if Miano or SunGod will be in the mix.

  9. A-joe December 29, 2015 8:54 am

What Rolo truly needs is 50,000 proactive, diehard, dedicated, bloodthursty, fans flooding Halawa who believe and demand nothing less than the commitment to winning National Championships.

  10. ponojr December 29, 2015 8:55 am

Malloe would have been a great get, but it’s hard to turn down the money when you have a family to provide for. Plus, he’s back at the school he graduated from.

  11. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2015 9:06 am

I think it’s going to be Lempa.
I don’t think it’s going to be Lelie.

  12. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2015 9:08 am

Keep an eye on Kevin Clune’s interview at Oregon State.
If he gets the DC job, it could create a wave that reaches the islands.
    Reference: Butterfly Effect.

  13. cheepono December 29, 2015 9:37 am

would the wave be more like big swells (good thing) or a devastating tsunami (bad thing)?

  14. al December 29, 2015 9:38 am

Hmmm.,.does a Clune move involve a member of the Aggies staff who may be headed home only to be diverted elsewhere or promoted?

  15. al December 29, 2015 9:38 am

    Ah…stay cluned.

    Good morning Tsaikos….

    Just waiting for the news…..

A-Joe, we should meet this weekend if can….I’ll text you soon….

  18. al December 29, 2015 9:41 am

We could use an assistant with Texas-Louisiana ties.
Won’t hurt to have another East coast presence.
    A Nevada-Utah guy I’d nice to have.
Another Cali or northwest stomper would be nice.

  19. cheepono December 29, 2015 9:43 am

been reading a lot of ST’s articles on KL from the old advertiser. very good reads. really miss those kinds of articles. content back then had a lot more depth in regards to schematics, play style, and overall football stuff. hopefully the muzzle chow placed on the media has been thrown away and burned and we can get back to that quality writing style.

Thanks for the scoops on Lempa yesterday al. My bad. Memory must be going. Rolo is right though. In college sports, it’s all about recruiting. You’ve got to get the players, or you stuck. You can put lipstick on a guy, but if he’s a pig, he still going be one pig. Just he going have lipstick on top of him.

  22. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2015 9:59 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

hooo…50,000 rabid fans in Halawa Stadium would definitley make a statement. Makes me wonder if the rust bucket could hold 50,000 rabid, rocking and rolling fans like before. me remembers sitting in the lodges and feeling the stadium do the “sway”. It was really amazing….memories of years gone by.

  23. Inyoface December 29, 2015 10:00 am

Would be good if AF can beat Cal and good for the MWC.

  24. Duster December 29, 2015 10:52 am

#24, I actually hope that QB Goff continues to have a good game and Cal wins to all but ensure that he bolts for the NFL. I understand that a number of his WRs are seniors, which has to be a factor for Goff. Looking ahead, UH could be facing Cal at the right time in the season opener where they will have a new starting QB and less experienced WRs.

  25. turfwar December 29, 2015 11:26 am

Does Goff ever throw to the Davis kid who transferred from UH?

  26. turfwar December 29, 2015 11:28 am

Been watching the game on and off and haven’t seen any receptions yet by the former Warrior. And Cal throws the ball on almost every down.

  27. SteveM December 29, 2015 11:42 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #23
NorthShoreFan — doesn’t take much to make the stadium sway nowadays…even last season the loge swayed when there was a situation to cheer about, and the stadium a quarter full.

  28. bowwar December 29, 2015 12:24 pm

Recruiting is a key…I hope we’re able to salvage a bit this year and get a few recruits who can help us in 2016 from the JC ranks. No word on getting a good JC QB at mid-year…Hopefully, that’s still on the drawing board.

    Chip Kelly needs a job!

  37. Derek December 29, 2015 2:55 pm

49ers should fire Tomsula and hire Kelly. 49ers need offense.

  38. What??? December 29, 2015 3:01 pm

Duh, how do you hire someone who’s not interested???

  39. (Jesse)James December 29, 2015 3:23 pm

    LOL..Well, Chip Kelly is available…. 😛

  40. kahuna December 29, 2015 3:52 pm

#41 from the previous thread….I think the kid that walked on from the basketball team and became a MB for the vball team was Joshua Stanhiser. He was 6-10 but was skinny.

  41. ai-eee-soos December 29, 2015 4:09 pm

Chip Kelly ??? — should be the OC @ Tenn Titans.

    what you think ?

  42. Dano December 29, 2015 4:14 pm

Or Kelly perhaps might be the future head coach of the Titans after this season.

  43. ai-eee-soos December 29, 2015 4:52 pm

Chip Kelly – HC of Titans ? – hmmmm – he might tear down the Titans like he did the Eagles. He should be OC only.

  44. Maddog50 December 29, 2015 5:58 pm

    News?

  45. PONO December 29, 2015 7:38 pm

I hope Tata ends up on our staff. With all the drama at Kahuku with their administration and coaches he’d be better off at UH.

  46. el burro sabio December 29, 2015 7:48 pm

    Thanks Kahuna, that’s the guy.

  47. cheepono December 29, 2015 9:31 pm

    chad kauhaahaa?

  48. Paniolo December 29, 2015 9:51 pm

As for our Warrior football Defensive Coordinator, it’s going to be Lempa. How do I know? Stephen Tsai mention he thinks it Lempa. Tsai usually gets the inside news of things.
For Chip Kelly, he will be the Tennessee Titan next head coach. During this year’s NFL draft, Coach and general manager for the Eagles, Chip Kelly wanted Marcus Mariota badly that they offered their number one draft and a few players. As you know at Oregon, Marcus’s head football coach was Chip Kelly.

  49. 808warriorfan December 29, 2015 10:29 pm

Was watching that Cal vs Air Force game this morning … I sure hope Jared Goff turns pro … he’d kill our DB’s in Sydney if he returns … hey trivia fans did you know that Jared Goff and Nick Rolovich went to the same High School (Marin Catholic) …

  50. 808warriorfan December 29, 2015 10:32 pm

#46 “Pono” … no drama in “Red Raider Nation” as long as they are winning … the drama there only happens when they lose … I do think that Coach Tata would want to return to college coaching someday … I say this as an opinion as what young coach wouldn’t want to move up

  51. 808warriorfan December 29, 2015 10:40 pm

#9 … “A-Joe” … make that 49,999 ‘cuz this fan will be there … heck I endured the losses this year w/ Fresno State – AFA – San Jose State … how much worse can it get. Just want to see a team that won’t give up and fight till the end.

  52. 808warriorfan December 29, 2015 10:43 pm

Mr Tsai … regarding your comment in #12 “create a wave that could reach the islands” … please explain … I do agree the WR coach probably won’t be Ashley Lelei as he has no coaching background. Something in my “gut” tells me possibly Craig Stutzmann (Emory & Henry) or Tim Chang (formerly with Jackson State) .

  53. cappie the dog December 29, 2015 10:57 pm

    Was Tim Chang fired?

I typed in the key words Tim, Chang, Jackson State, and fired, and came up with nothing.

  54. kapakahi December 30, 2015 12:22 am

Just like UH, Jackson State hired a new Head Football Coach.

  55. Kifi December 30, 2015 12:28 am

    #12 – Jake Cookus???

  56. al December 30, 2015 12:37 am

51…the drama is with the Kahuku boys basketball team. The HC has been suspended.

  57. Kifi December 30, 2015 12:38 am

#12 – If Kevin Clune gets the OSU DC job. His last Dline coach Ikaika Malloe is now at Washington. The one he had at Utah State prior to that is Frank Maile who is now at Vanderbilt. Frank Maile got the job at Vandy after Vae Tata was let go. Perhaps Kevin Clune will go with Tata, or with someone that he is familiar with Lance Samuseva. If he were smart, he would go with Joe Seumalo who was the defensive line coach at OSU for nine years prior to the 2015 season.

  58. rundown808 December 30, 2015 12:38 am

Waikapu, you Crack me up. Lipstick on a pig? Classic. Funny visual but too the point. Lol. No matter how much you dress it up. Talent is talent. Whether coach or player. Choose wisely because the consequences will come back and haunt you. The best thing I commend Rolo about is he wants to be here. He knew the job was dangerous when he took it, he knows the odds working against him, but he came anyway. Best opportunity for him to make a difference not just professionally but personally. We gotta have more Nick Sabans. Not just a coach but a leader of men whose not just looking for great players but great men. With character. That is a true champion. Got to care about your players, your university, and your state. So to Rolo, compassion and humilty goes along way. Longevity is the key to success. I pray his success here at UH. He knows what’s at stake. I hope the university gives him all the support he needs to help the football program.

  59. Hilorain December 30, 2015 12:47 am

#12 could the wave ST is referring to apply to local recruiting?

  60. H-Man December 30, 2015 4:43 am

Slow. Things need to pick up.

  61. cappie the dog December 30, 2015 5:51 am

What do you get when you schedule a team like Mississippi Valley State?

You win, of course, but you also take a hit in the RPI.

You drop twenty-two places to #80.

A victory against the MEAC’s Howard will prompt another fall, probably ten to fifteen spots.

Out of NCAA at-large consideration; out of NIT at-large consideration.

UC-Irvine could have really helped out the Big West by beating Kansas.

Today, crazy Dan Monson has his team playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

  62. Old School Dave December 30, 2015 7:08 am

Lewis Powell at Utah (former UH D-line coach) could be another candidate for the OSU D-line job. Forgot that Powell played under Gary Andersen when they were both there as player and coach, respectively. Coaching can often be a matter of “who you know and worked with” in the past. Agree, that Joe Seumalo needs to be back coaching in the Pac-12. He is experienceed and did a good job as D-line coach at OSU. Too bad it came to his leaving Corvalis, with Chad Kauhaahaa coming over with Andersen’s staff from Wisonsin.

If Kevin Lemma is not named the DC, I wouldn’t be surprised or mind if Coach hires some hungry, “Young Gun, DC up from the FCS level.

  63. Old School Dave December 30, 2015 7:10 am

    Sorry, Kevin Lempa.

  64. airsumo December 30, 2015 7:22 am

How about Brian Cabral former CU lb coach and now at Indiana St. for DC and lb coach? I believe he is a good choice for DC because he has experience at the highest levels and a native son.

  65. letsgowarriors December 30, 2015 7:31 am

why wouldnt Clune just keep Chad as DL coach? they coached together at Weber and USU before.

  66. cheepono December 30, 2015 8:19 am

only speculating here but maybe chad aspires to be a dc and getting passed over with no consideration for the job could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. even without the pay raise, being dc at hawaii is still a promotion in duties over being strictly a position coach at osu. he seems the type with head coaching goals and the natural progression is to go from position coach to coordinator.

  67. Maddog50 December 30, 2015 8:31 am

    Jonesin for some FB news

  68. Tempmanoa December 30, 2015 8:52 am

If Clune gets hired as DC, I agree that Chad may just stay at OSU. But Chad may also have a shot at DC for Utah State (besides Hawaii)– if he takes a sizable cut in pay. Chad has now coached at two P5 schools and with Anderson, Sitake, and Aranda giving him some great defensive teachers. Now or in the near future he is a guy on the way up. He would be a good get for us, but he would need to take a cut in pay. We could not match OSU– way higher than us– Utah State pays more than us but not the big difference with OSU.

  69. Kifi December 30, 2015 9:22 am

It appears that Tsai is hinting toward Kevin Lempa becoming the DC. I thought that Demarion Warren was signed, sealed, and delivered. Thought that Warren would have been a great choice.

  70. Kifi December 30, 2015 9:23 am

    My apologies. It’s Demario Warren.

FIRST TIME POSTER BUT HAVE BEEN READING COMMENTS FOR YEARS. HERE IS THE THING I FIND INTERESTING… DO YOU REALLY THINK SOMEONE WOULD LEAVE OREGON STATE TO COME TO HAWAII… GUYS THINK ABOUT IT. LOOK AT WHO ROLO IS HIRING NO ONE IS LEAVING A BIG TIME SCHOOL TO COME TO THE ISLAND TO COACH. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT HAWAII IS A TOUGH PLACE TO WORK. OUR BEST HOPE IS THAT ROLO CAN HIRE YOUNG COACHES THAT WILL WORK THERE BUTTS OFF THEN MOVE ON TO BETTER JOBS. IF YOU LOOK AT CHOWS FIRST STAFF…. THE YOUNG GUYS HE HIRED ALL LEFT ON THERE OWN TO BETTER JOBS… JONES WISCONSIN. POWELL UTAH. RAUSCHER DENVER BRONCOS… IF NORM HAD GIVEN THESE GUYS MORE FREEDOM WE WOULD BE SITTING IN A MUCH BETTER PLACE. YOU CAN ALL SIT THERE AND HOPE AND DREAM BUT IF YOU LOOK AT IT WE COULDNT EVEN GET BABERS AGENT ON THE PHONE TO TALK TO US. LET ALONE ANYONE FROM THE NAVY STAFF… HAWAII HAS A PROUD FOOTBALL COACHING TREE, AND ITS SAD THAT THEY ALL KNOW HOW BAD IT HAS GOTTEN.

  72. uhfan10 December 30, 2015 9:58 am

Just read abe reinhardt comitted is this true????

  73. Warrior Nation December 30, 2015 10:46 am

Well I guess Lempa is the new DC. Hoping Tata gets on the staff somewhere, he brings a lot of PAC 12 experience. Did anyone notice that Baylor ran an offense similar to Kahuku. Baylor had no QB, but had a good o line & RB’s and skilled players to run the rock just like Kahuku. Baylor coach looking like a genius now.

  76. Waikapu December 30, 2015 1:35 pm

Okay, out of left field, but okay Ipu Man. Hope you went back and got your order!
My friend, before he entered Salvation Army 10-step Alcoholics Program, used to be just wasted all the time. He’d drink Old English 400s warm in the can that he’d stash under his car seat. He was once so wasted he put the gas hose in his car at 7-11 filled the gas, then he forgot to take the line out. He drove off and yanked the whole line of the gas pump. The 7-11 guy came out and chased him down the street, the gas line still dangling from his car. Man, those were the days. A judge eventually sentenced him to like five months in jail because he had like five DUIs, and a couple times the cops did him a favor and threw his drugs away on the street. Anyways, after jail and the Salvation Army, he’s a regular dude now. Good for him, but not so good for telling funny stories anymore.

Rolo needs to get rolling with recruiting. The rest of the Mountain West has scooped up a bunch. Most have between 18 and 21 commits so far. Meanwhile, Hawaii was sitting on 5 commits, but now 6 with the addition of LB Abe Reinhardt.

Looks like securing the DC is difficult. Limited dollars makes it a challenge. That’s the nature of the landscape for most but a bit worse for UH.
