Heated practices

A year ago, I was complaining to a friend that I couldn’t find my cell phone.

She said: “Aren’t you talking to me on your cell right now?”

So, yes, I’m old and forgetful, and really thought I filed a blog this morning when I didn’t.

Now, where are my glasses?

It it’s humid eight days from now, then the Warriors will be ready.

This morning’s practice was the muggiest of the year. But the Warriors were able to get extensive work against the scout teams.

Ikaika Woolsey, firmly established as the No. 2 quarterback, has had solid practices the past week.

Former UH DBs Ryan Mouton, Myron Newberry and Gerard Lewis visited this morning’s practice.

They’re in town for former teammate Jason Ferguson’s wedding.

Rich Miano, who was UH’s secondary coach, also was at practice as part of his prep work for OC Sports.

Jacob Patek and Keao Monteilh needed to be there to complete the reunion.

    Uno!

  2. NotNasti August 26, 2015 12:17 pm

Let’s hope for a muggy evening next Thursday. Lots of cramping Buffs.

  3. Shoko August 26, 2015 12:18 pm

I guess the Buffs coming in on Tuesday gives them the opportunity to do what every other non conference member does when traveling to the islands.

    Visit the Arizona Memorial.

  4. Trunks420 August 26, 2015 12:24 pm

Can Woosley Be our Starter and Max be the back up.

That way he can lead us into the big games and have Max during conference games

  5. PONO August 26, 2015 12:55 pm

Trunk, are you thinking the starting QB will get hurt and not make it to conference games?

  6. islandman August 26, 2015 12:55 pm

I was looking for my sunglasses, but they were on top of my cap.

  7. Willie August 26, 2015 12:59 pm

They all look to be in great shape. Ryan Mouton is so talented, too bad the injury bug got in the way of his career.

On another note Rutgers football suspends 5 players for half of this season due to a curfew violation. Warrior players cited for DUI got a bunch of time too. However the #1 Buckeyes only suspend 4 key players for the 2105 season opener against Virginia Tech for pretty serious reported incidents. I believe it was noted that academics and possibly pakalolo involved. I guess really different standards for big time programs when so much money to be made. Warriors are #2 on the list so they will be at full strength.

Kudos to Murphy and others for Pig Out thingy.
Heaven forbid, but it the Murph ever goes down
    does UH have a substitute(s)?

  9. Na Koa Mike August 26, 2015 1:24 pm

Don’t forget Murphy’s Annual Pigskin Pigout takes place tomorrow starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 each.

Enjoy an evening of food, drinks, and fun in a block-party gathering along Merchant Street in Downtown Honolulu. The highlight of the evening is, of course, the live auction featuring a variety of vacations and sports memorabilia. or more information, contact The Hawaii Bowl office at 523-3688 or Nā Koa Football Club at 956-4513.

  10. Trunks420 August 26, 2015 1:25 pm

Pono just thinking it be safe way to go.

Also couldn’t hurt to switch out between the two during big games

  11. H-Man August 26, 2015 1:25 pm

I guess Ikaika had one bad practice – the one I went to. So it’s great news if he played good this week at practice. It’s going to be a long, grueling season and he will be seeing a lot of game time. For that matter, all the 2s and 3s are going to have to contribute a lot for this to be a successful winning season.

  12. bowwar August 26, 2015 1:29 pm

#4: Max is familiar with playing on the “big stage” and won’t be intimidated by the hostile crowd and superior talent that he’s going to play against. He gives UH the best chance of winning against the better teams. I’m in favor of bringing up Zwhalen up quicker and recruit another QB next year along with Milton.

  13. nutmegger August 26, 2015 1:31 pm

    #2 NotNasti,
Tropical Storm/Hurricane Ignacio looks like it may be reaching Oahu on Sept 3rd.
Good chance of humidity if not rain, wind, etc.

  14. Shoko August 26, 2015 1:36 pm

Woolsey has one more year of eligibility and can regain the starting position. However, the present head coach is in a tenuous position given it’s recent struggles. It could be a totally different team next season.

  15. cocobean August 26, 2015 1:50 pm

One would hope Ikaika has improved over last year. Schroeder made a big improvement from his first to second year. So has a lot of QBs we’ve had – Moniz, Alexander ( before he got hurt), Colt, Rolo…

I feel confident he’ll be ready if he’s pressed into action for whatever reason. I have confidence Wittek has improved from the first time we saw him a couple of years ago. In a sense it’s his second go around also. They say experience is the best teacher I hope each has learned something from their first go around.

I woke up with two pairs of underwear on yesterday, ug.

  17. Shoko August 26, 2015 2:20 pm

I suppose there’s a chance of a repeat of Chow’s second year where Schroeder was the backup coming out of fall camp and became the starter that put up big numbers on offense. Hopefully, the defense won’t be the Achilles heal that was partly responsible for the 1-11 season.

    Jared Leaf suffers a concussion.

Anyway, it looks like the only other West Division schools that are undecided on their starting quarterbacks in San Diego State and San Jose State. Can’t find any news whether New Mexico made a decision so I assume they are in the same boat.

    West:
San Diego State – Maxwell Smith (Tr) and Christian Chapman (Rf)
San Diego State – Joe Gray and Harry Potter (JC)
    Fresno State – Zack Greenlee
    Nevada – Tyler Stewart
    UNLV – Blake Decker

    Mountain:
    Boise State – Ryan Finley
    Wyoming – Cameron Coffman
New Mexico – Austin Apodaca and Lamar Jordan
    Colorado State – Nick Stevens
    Air Force – Nate Romine
    Utah State -Chuckie Keeton

  18. Shoko August 26, 2015 2:24 pm

Haha..Harry Potter. I mean Kenny Potter.

While both WR Haynes & OL Clements are from Blinn JC, JMHO that would still be nice if UH could increase recruiting efforts with the Texas JCs.

  27. Maddog50 August 26, 2015 4:16 pm

Reading a lot of really positive articles about the new buffs. I know one thing for sure nice stories good talk and high hopes don’t win games. The team that gives the best effort start start to finish does-I like the Warriors in this one-

  28. Bryson August 26, 2015 4:42 pm

I was at practice on Saturday watching 7 on 7 and Ikaika still looks like he takes to long to go through his reads and holds onto the ball to long

  29. Inyoface August 26, 2015 5:12 pm

That’s the problem with Ikaika, double pump action too much. He should be more comfortable with his instinct and whip it like a dart.

  30. oneseason August 26, 2015 5:50 pm

I would like to see the shuffle pass again. That made for some exciting plays.

  31. kahuna August 26, 2015 6:27 pm

Ikaika may be a solid #2 but it is only because BR is not physically not strong enough and Zwahlen is inexperienced.

Yes…Ikaika takes too long to make his reads. He also tend to make only two reads and then take off. I think if Ikaika comes in, Bailey will call a different game and call plays that would suit him. Not an ideal situation. You want your #2 to be able to do what you #1 can do so you can continue on the game plan but I don’t think so.

I saw a few rollouts and bootlegs during practices that Ikaika ran but I didn’t see too many from Wittek. Wittek stayed in the pocket and go thru all his reads much quicker than Woolsey.

  32. Inyoface August 26, 2015 7:04 pm

Reardon picked a couple losses I pick as wins. We’re going bowling this year!!! Chee!!!

  33. A-House August 26, 2015 7:45 pm

If Colorado takes the 11:30 am United flight direct to Honolulu they should arrive about 3:30 pm HST – gives them 2 days to acclimate.

Not a charter flight, but direct.

  34. Tempmanoa August 26, 2015 8:58 pm

From what I have seen Wittek and Woolsey are very close. Based on the spotty reported stats, the numbers are close especially when Max is getting twice as many snaps. But I think Max has more upside and will improve with some live games. That was the idea behind Graham, but when Graham got hurt a change had to be made. Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen. For example no point risking Max in a blowout game (for us or them).

  35. oneseason August 26, 2015 10:33 pm

A few apples and oranges, it seems, from Reardon today … “In 2011, Greg McMackin’s fourth and final season, UH went 6-7. If the Rainbow Warriors avoid injuries they will do better than that and make the Hawaii Bowl for the first time since 2010. But this is football; injuries are reality, and UH isn’t deep enough at most positions to overcome them.” … Since UH was just a few points away from a 9-4 season in 2010 due to no field goal capability for most of the season, that might be a better metric for what might happen, but won’t (at least according to DR). I want to see (and feel we must see) Chow lead UH to victories in 2015 against MWC opponents that end up with winning conference records.

  36. Maddog50 August 27, 2015 3:29 am

Story on Melvin Davis was really good. Hope he makes good on his promise every time he hits the field and the classroom. What a wonderful thing to have a big powers back that gives you the tough yards and has overall RB ability. I think OL’ Tom Mason brings a swarming cutting defense to the field next Thursday—this ain’t practice no more!!! Would really like to see some of the younger OL grow in leaps and bounds Wa’a Tupai and Eli …..Dejon will be solid as any and Leo K should vastly improve over a year ago as he put on more muscle and weight. Really want to see the tackles and depth there be stable…..we will see what RJ brings to the game……one week away and already order a new Polo from H Zone for my trips!!! Go Warriors!!!!

  37. Tofuzuke August 27, 2015 6:31 am

We should start Ikaika next week for the first 2 series and run the ball w/ DSJ and the a running QB. This will give Wittek time to settle and see how the defense set ups, den we open it up!!
    “Warriors come out to playyyyy!!!!!”
