Happy campers

drake

In deciding to set up camps, head coach Norm Chow set a goal: Make it affordable.

The $20-a-day fee covered the cost of a T-shirt, lunch, refreshments, insurance and facility rental.

The payoff came this past week when Lt. Col. Jason Drake — a father of five and a die-hard Warrior football fan — heard murmurs the Warrior coaches would be conducting a free clinic at Pearl Harbor on Friday. The thing is, he was moving that day to North Carolina ahead of his deployment to Afghanistan. That’s when he learned about this week’s youth camp for ages 5-12. With the low price, the man signed up his three kids, as well as a neighbor’s son.

Drake said he was blessed to watch them at the camp before leaving Hawaii.

When told of the story, Chow told camp director Chris Demarest to refund the camp fee.

* * * * *

The UH coaches indeed will be conducting a free clinic at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Friday afternoon.

* * * * *

No definite plans yet, but Chow said he would like to have a UH coaches’ clinic for women this fall. If it materializes, the UH coaches would be the instructors.

Congrats to Stretch for being named to Na Koa’s Board of Directors.

    Morning!

Chow = Nice guy. With acts of kindness such as that, Chow is sure to build up some good karma for the upcoming season. He should cash in that karma when they play da Trojans.

Just a thought, but is it wrong to ask Warrior fans on the East coast (who are up earlier) to scope the press and have a condensed version of whats going on in the sports world? MW, NYUH or WNY? 😉 Beats reading through the morning spam…

K-den, going for my morning run…

    Morning all,

Spam in that last blog post was crazy… Regarding NC’s live facebook chat today, when can we start submitting questions? I know ESPN usually gives about an hour prior to online chats to start submitting questions.

The Ravens have waived WR Rodney Bradley and ILB Cody Glenn, the team announced on Wednesday. Both positions are high in numbers which allowed the organization to make these moves. Bradley spent time on Baltimore’s practice squad in 2011. Glenn, who played with Indianapolis from 2009-2010, signed as a free agent earlier this offseason.

  29. kama krab June 13, 2012 6:25 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Coach Chow is a very blessed man and is just paying it forward like we were all taught as young people growing up on the aina. That’s how real locals do it.

  30. kama krab June 13, 2012 6:29 am

The Ravens announced a pair of roster moves this morning. The Ravens waived wide receiver Rodney Bradley, who spent time on the team’s practice squad last season, and veteran linebacker Cody Glenn.

Bradley, 23, signed with the Ravens as a rookie free agent last offseason. He has battled injuries this spring, which might have played a role in Bradley failing to distinguish himself in a crowded group of wide receivers.

  32. gigi-hawaii June 13, 2012 6:43 am

Liz: That’s too bad about Rodney Bradley. Good luck to him on his next endeavor.

  33. A-joe June 13, 2012 6:48 am

ST- Is Chow doing a women’s football clinic?

Congratulations, Na Koa, on your awesome edition!!

  34. Jon June 13, 2012 6:52 am

My 2 sons (ages 9 and 7) are going to the camp this week. They are having a blast! My older one went to all 4 of the camps put on by McMackin and the younger one went to 3 of them (he was only 3 the first year they had one).

The $60 is ridiculously cheap for 3 days. It would be worth it at a $250 price tag.

Thank you Coach Chow for keeping this youth program going!!

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid June 13, 2012 6:56 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Coach Chow is terrific.

    Congratulations to Stretch.

I just have to tell this story about the Man. I was at the Spring game at the Stadium and had problems navigating down the stairs (hopefully the spinal operation will take care of that!) and Stretch came over and helped me down and then walked me down the concourse to make sure I was OK. I will always remember his act of kindness.

Na Koa is lucky to have him on its board.

Sorry to hear about Bradley – hope he will catch on somewhere else.

This is kinda funny. Completely off topic, but I thought I should share…

David Stern and Jim Rome kinda get into it on the radio when Rome asks if the NBA Draft is fixed… Stern actually says at the end of the interview… “I gotta go and call someone important like Stephen A. Smith.”

    http://deadspin.com/5918141/david-stern-asked-jim-rome-have-you-stopped-beating-your-wife-yet-as-todays-interview-turned-ugly

  62. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 10:22 am

    Am I missing something?

  63. jm2375 (Infuse) June 13, 2012 10:22 am

So BSU is considering paying a “special six-figure fee to join the BWC. Only 6 figures? How about 8? With all the extra Big East money, they should be able to afford it.

  64. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 10:25 am

I wonder if UH gets a piece of BSU’s entry fee?

Don’t think it’s necessary to further punish Boise. I think the groveling is sufficient punishment.

  65. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 10:28 am

UH’s Internet speed is really fast.

I think I might do my bills here.

  66. Bulla June 13, 2012 10:34 am

  67. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 10:35 am

I still can’t figure out why, with all of the TV I watch, that I didn’t see Bulla’s commercial on earlier.

  68. mctruck June 13, 2012 10:55 am

Watching discussion(s) on espnu regarding their favorite format for fb championship game to declare #1 team(champion). Watched it replay several times today and what jumps out at me is that the discussion seems to leave out the winner of the, Rose Bowl between the PAC12/BIG10 champion. Only because it doesn’t comply with the criteria of the, TOP FOUR, format; that issue of course being discuued by conference huncho’s in Chicago today..as well as the future(demise)of the BCS after,(2013) and AQ status issues.

  69. (Jesse) James June 13, 2012 10:56 am

A late good morning Tsaikos…..and good for Coach Chow to show such Aloha and generosity!!!

  70. (Jesse) James June 13, 2012 10:57 am

Awesome Stretch…Good job!!! Now we have a voice or two!!! LOL

  71. mctruck June 13, 2012 10:58 am

Can you say, Rose Bowl, irrelivant?…did I spell it right?

  72. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 11:01 am

If they don’t have at least an eight-team playoff, then it will be worse than the BCS system, especially if the SEC wants to claim more than one spot.

Not sure what’s going to become of all of those expanded conferences, too.

  78. HawaiiMongoose June 13, 2012 12:31 pm

ST, re #64, I agree there’s no benefit to making BSU grovel. However UH has to think strategically about what’s best for its long-term future.

The MWC and by extension UH will be hurt if the Big East can establish a permanent beachhead in the western U.S. That will prevent the MWC from obtaining the recruiting and exposure benefits that come with being the sole regional football competitor to the Pac 12.

Therefore anything UH can do to maximize the expense and inconvenience to BSU of being in the Big East is a good thing. That means blocking BSU from joining the Big West for non-football sports, or if that’s not possible, at least making the Broncos pay the highest possible ongoing membership premium. BSU will probably join the Big East anyhow, but making it very costly may convince the Broncos in the long run that the Big East experiment is a bad idea and they should return to the MWC.

So IMHO, UH should be polite about it, but firmly oppose admitting BSU to the Big West unless the Broncos are willing to pay a seven-figure annual fee. Like they say in The Godfather, it’s nothing personal, just business.

I dunno if I can do five. One question keeps running over and over: “DPK, what did that tree ever do to you?”

  85. WarriorMojo June 13, 2012 1:21 pm

Stretch and Powder Puff with Na Koa. Kazz, Pomai, Ralph etc. with softball. AHouse and the garden. Big Hilo with the bikes and ball machine. Tom Mui having his client designate UH as a beneficiary. I know I’m leaving out a ton of others, but just wanted to say that I’m really proud of the Tsaikos.

  86. mo808 June 13, 2012 1:24 pm

ST, lol at the cannoli and Godfather reference!

  87. Warrior Dave June 13, 2012 1:42 pm

Since UH becomes a member of MWC & BWC on 7/1, are they allowing us to even vote on the BSU matter regarding admittance?

Sorry ST, but I would vote no to BWC admittance. Must do everything possible to help the moneymaker, football.

BSU must be considering dropping out of the Big East to request a decision by July 1st.

  88. Buffoman June 13, 2012 1:43 pm

What if the Rose Bowl decided to make themselves more relevant by say creating their own play off system before the others get their acts off and running and being totally exculded, which seems to be what may be occurring with the SEC led charge. So, get the Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12 and MWC to participate in their own play off. Use the “other bowls to host the play off amongst the 4 conferences, seeding them accordingly and it would be okay to have the MWC be the “bastard child of lesser parents” always being the lowest seed. The 4 Conference champions would meet two weeks prior to the Rose Bowl. The Peach and Fiesta (for the sake of naming names) would each host the conference playoff and the winners would advance to the Rose.

I think that the Rose would attract sponsors and isn’t that the name of the game..for bowls..making money.

I’m that this is full of holes so punch away.

  89. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 1:54 pm

  91. HawaiiMongoose June 13, 2012 2:34 pm

I guess it will come down to whether Boise has the bucks to make an offer the Big West can’t refuse. LOL.

  92. 3-Prong June 13, 2012 3:09 pm

Warrior Dave, I’m with you. I vote no also. Nothing personal against Boise. Just a Business Decision in the best interest of the entire athletics departments financial future. If Boise can’t leave the MWC we stand a better chance at renegotiating a TV contract for the league. Six figures being dangled at Big West is nothing compared to a new TV deal for the MWC.

The good thing is I bought French bread, and left it in the car. It’s nice and warm now.

ST, thanks for putting the photo of Lt. Col. Drake and his kids. Such a nice story! And thank you, Lt. Col., for your service to our great country. The Drake keiki and hundreds of other kids can attend the UH Summer Camps for low fees thanks in part to the money raised by Nā Koa. And guess what? You can help out by attending the Nā Koa Football Camp Scholarship Dinner on Tuesday, June 26 at Honolulu Country Club. Individual tickets are available for $125 per person. Come and enjoy a great evening. The Tsaikos’ newest Nā Koa board member will be there. 🙂

RE: UH athletics and social media

Very good to see that UH is advantage of social media. This is where it’s at today. Everyone has a Facebook and or a Twitter. Recently Coach Beeman and Coach Wooley have taken to Twitter and other coaches are on Twitter as well.

Plus the advent of the smartphone makes access to social media much more easier and allows updates and news to be relayed to the public much faster.

What would be interesting is if UH could have UH related Twitter accounts for student-athletes to manage and UH would then push and push and market the hell out of following those accounts. UH would set up the Twitter account (separate from the student-athletes personal one) and they could post tweets one gameday or the week of a game. Basically having accounts that fans could follow and see tweets on a somewhat frequent basis. Other than paying for advertising time on TV, its free to manage and update.

    Example:

    @UHDGraves

Just arrived in LA. Time to #dowork #GOWARRIORS!

Something as simple as this just helps to get people excited and it gives them a real time update to where their favorite players are.

While some players already do this on their own Twitter accounts, they do enjoy the exclusiveness of having known individuals follow them on Twitter (i.e. friends, teammates, and family only). So with UH creating a separate account with a uniform Twitter name, that should alleviate any “stalkerness” as they would only Tweet UH athletic stuff on there and fans can tweet them back without flooding their personal Twitter accounts.

However one would have to explore any potential issues with NCAA regulations with regards to UH openly advertising and asking fans to “follow so-and-so” on Twitter.

Trending topics is also a very popular way to get word out on issues or events. Using the hashtag in a manner of a catchy phrase in relation to a UH event also helps. This is probably more useful for a younger generation

    Example:

    @UHhartongVB

The season is here! #letsgobows #nationalchampsintraining!!!

    Or

    @UHskuehuBB

New season, new coach, #newattitude #GOBOWS

For anyone unfamilar with using hashtags on twitter, the more popular the hashtag or common trending phrase the more people will see the entire tweet associated with it. If the hashtag is common enough, more people will see it even if they’re not following you or UH in general.

    Example:

    @Uhathletics

#MerryChristmas to everyone. Don’t forget UH vs ——- in the #ESPN Diamond Head Classic this Thursday!

Just think of how many people would be using “Merry Christmas” on Twitter that day.. Well, they will see your tweet. Free advertising!

*BTW none of those Twitter names or accounts exist. Just made them up.

Kevin must have read Mary Meeker’s presentation on the future of the internet

  118. Kevin June 13, 2012 5:33 pm

    Social Media is amazing.

To get your personal friends and world news, sports info, etc… all in one area. Pftttt… would be dumb not to take advantage of it.

It’s free and easy to access. Lots of misinformation out there, but as quickly as the internet advances, one must be equally as quick to catch all the BS info flying around. Lots of misinformaton on TV as well, but it only appears more legitimate because TV is all we had for generations and the internet info age only skyrocketed in the last 5 years.

Catch up or get left behind!

I have precious little time online and trust this blog for a lot of accurate and timely information! I don’t need to twitter. Am I alone?

fly fishing? …Must be some pretty small hooks you use… After you catch the fly, what do you do with it?

  124. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 8:05 pm

Never went fly fishing, but I did catch a bug a few times.

Just needed lots of fluids. Couldn’t figure out what to starve or what to feed, so I decided: Just eat.

  125. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2012 8:06 pm

What’s great is Demo’s speech that goes with the awarding of the shirt. Has something to do with be proud to be a Warrior. Stuff like that. OK, sounds hokey, but I did get chicken skin listening to it. Must be The Situation accent.

Time to rethink the birthday wishes.

People are 14 percent more likely to die on their birthday.

  127. 3-Prong June 13, 2012 8:24 pm

Madeinhawaii: Fishing humor. Love it. Fly fishing is fun. Did some in Oregon during the college years. Fun but pound for pound, trout can’t fight anything like a papio. But salmon, thats a different story. Pretty exciting fish to catch especially when they jump.

  128. krump1_AKA_protector June 13, 2012 8:27 pm

OK, but only if I can drive the boat– 200 HP engines should be enough.

But I’m gonna Faraoke all the way… 🙂

Hmmm.wonder if that was what Rasu had in mind? We were talking Lake Mead Tsai-ko boating next trip. Sigh. 😐

Hope you’re feeling better Slugger. No get sick!

Learned to fly fish for salmon and loved it! Then one day, something…might have been a king although I was fishing for reds, hit like a hammer and tore the rod right out of my hands. T’was an expensive outfit disappearing down the river!

  134. BG June 13, 2012 9:33 pm

    Good morning, gang!

    I miss Rasu Begasu, too.
