Game week: Turnaround

In 2012, Tony Grimes was recruited to UH be a shut-down cornerback. But during the 2013 season — his senior year — he was shut down from football activities to focus on academics.

If Grimes was disappointed, he did not show it. Sure, he still chased the dream, training for UH’s pro day the past March. But he also attended classes. At the end of the spring semester, his grade-point average was 3.1.

Although his playing eligibility was exhausted , Grimes needed another year to earn a bachelor’s degree. Coach Norm Chow decided to extend Grimes’ scholarship. Grimes also has a part-time job.

When one door close, another …

Once again outstanding coverage in todays SA, thanks. Predictions and assessments abound for this Sat. Field position taking care of the ball and no big plays resulting in “easy” scores, will put the Warriors in position to play a great game. Seriously believe that the effort will be relentless on our side of the ball. So now it will be wait till Saturday!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    Pomai – UH 24-7

  26. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 7:26 am

Chopsuey, you make a very insightful point. In the last 10-12 years, Udub has transformed itself, and now is only behind Stanford (way behind) and USC (nipping at their heels) in the size of their endowment. So, at present, they are little under 2.5 billion.

So, for us bean counters, that is about 15 times the size of UHʻs piggy bank.

  27. letsgowarriors August 28, 2014 7:29 am

chow must really have a lid on things if 2 days before the season opener, your blog is about a DB that wasn’t even on the team last year.

  28. pollypicador August 28, 2014 7:51 am

I was watching the news last night of the Warriors practicing 11 on 11 drills.

All total the segment showed 2 offensive plays.

But those two offensive plays *unnecessarily*

gives out too much information to the opposition. (Trust me these

2 plays weren’t generic type plays).

Chow should limit what the media can telecast during his closed practices.

If past history tells Chow anything is that the former USC coach was quoted as saying (back in the 2010 home opener) that he learned from watching a news telecast that the Warriors were practicing in the pistol formation (which was valuable info to the HC).

On another note I was reading where UH ranked first at running 3.4 offensive

plays a minute last season. From watching last night news telecast (too) I would say the team will probably replicate that pace.

    Go Warriors!

Warriors make an opening game statement by pounding the Huskies.

    Warriors 42 Huskies 14

  31. A-House August 28, 2014 8:34 am

2 days – anticipation starting to build – all our little idiosyncrasies appear: twitching nose, tapping of the toe or foot, itchy ear, increase in BP, etc.

we all start thinking of what’s needed – food, cooler, clothes, drinks, tickets, etc.

TICKETS!!!!!!! yes, with your season tickets is a “coupon” for men’s VB or wahine BB – IF YOU WILL NOT USE, please bring to the tailgate or mail to me at 1164 Bishop Street #400, Hon, HI 96813.

kawika49 – have not received your coupon as of today.

  32. Tanks Ah! August 28, 2014 8:36 am

Pomai, my score for this week should read UW 38 Hawaii 10 instead of 10-10. Tanks Ah!

  33. Lawaia August 28, 2014 8:48 am

    Pomai,

    Na Koa Anuenue 37 – Huskies 24.

  34. cocobean August 28, 2014 8:53 am

There is so much suspense in a season opener. Everyone can speculate the outcome but won’t know it until the game is played. My hope is the outcome won’t be decided until the final minutes of the game. I want Hawaii to win for sure but I can’t honestly say I expect HI will win. Put me down as hopeful.

  35. Stephen Tsai August 28, 2014 8:54 am

Warriors just finished the final full practice of the week. After stretching, they had about an hour of drills. The past two days were strictly the first two units against the scouts.

  36. Stephen Tsai August 28, 2014 8:56 am

    Prolly picador
I don’t think you saw UH running 11 on 11 drills on news last night. Video is cut off after first 10 minutes of practice.

  37. RB August 28, 2014 9:01 am

    Congrats to Tony Grimes!!!!

  39. Ipu Man August 28, 2014 9:12 am

    UH 55 – UW 28
But I bet uw will try to run no huddle on memorized plays from the git go.

  40. Kifi August 28, 2014 9:12 am

I heard that there were three very handsome guys at practice this morning. Rich Miano, Kent Kafentzis, and our blog host. Looked like a GQ magazine photo shoot is what I heard.

  41. Kifi August 28, 2014 9:15 am

#35-Maybe it was 5 and half on 5 and a half and we were seeing double.

  42. cocobean August 28, 2014 9:16 am

pollyp. Surprised you didn’t pickup on all the “loose lips” made by the UH coaches starting with Norm saying they’re going to a spread w/3 wides. Or Wynn saying they’re going uptempo and Clune confirming by saying he likes the quick pace his D has to go up against in practice.

You can bank on it that Petersen and Chow have videos of each others Fall scrimmages.

  43. Kifi August 28, 2014 9:16 am

Gotta win the special teams phase.
    Gotta win the turnover battle.

  44. Kifi August 28, 2014 9:19 am

#42-Auwe, one of those no sh&t Sherlock moments. Stating the obvious again.

  45. cocobean August 28, 2014 9:20 am

Kifi. I think only the blog host is a card carrying, paid up member of the PMMU – Professional Male Models Union. The other two guys are just moonlighting amateurs.

  46. cocobean August 28, 2014 9:29 am

Kifi, you saying we got to beat Petersen at his own game? Special teams play has been one of the hallmarks of Petersen’s coaching philosophy. Forgot the year but BSU beat us here because of their special teams play. You are correct about winning those two phases.

  47. bowwar August 28, 2014 9:39 am

It’s “take no prisoners” time, either you “believe” or sit at the end of the bench. The Warriors WILL WIN this Saturday, as the Huskies will be a bit overconfident and expect to put it in cruise control…Hit ’em hard and make them feel like they’ve been in a game. That’s all the Aloha we need to give the Huskies.

    Imua Warriors!

  48. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 9:43 am

USC team in turmoil…another hiccup in the program: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/28/usc-rb-anthony-brown-couldnt-play-for-a-racist-quits-team/

  49. Wes'side Warrior August 28, 2014 9:55 am

    Morning, Gang!

Good to hear positive news for Grimes!

    Pomai, I think going be… UH 30 – 20 UW

    Have a great day, everyone!

  50. Andrew August 28, 2014 9:57 am

    45

I have a feeling too that especially if the game is close, Peterson is gonna pull some kind of play whether on special teams or offense in order to get the go-ahead score or to pull away. It’s gonna be key for the defense to recognize and stop that play when it happens in order for Hawaii to have a chance to pull it off.

  51. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 10:06 am

My sources tell me that the blog host was secretly a featured fire dancer at Tihatiʻs South Sea Spectacular, back in the day….

  52. cocobean August 28, 2014 10:06 am

boola. You can always expect good drama from Tinsel Town’s team.

  53. SteveM August 28, 2014 10:08 am

    Good morning everyone!

Congrats to everyone who found the blog this morning.
wafan’s right: Warrior World twilight zone.

Today’s blog entry shows that Chow is “putting his money (scholarship) where his mouth is” when he says he wants his players to graduate.

  54. cocobean August 28, 2014 10:14 am

boola. I heard that story too. Think after a while due to safety reasons he was the only dancer required to cover up. Had to wear board shorts and a tee shirt or they couldn’t get insurance coverage. Too may women lost control and rushed the stage when he performed shirtless wearing a lava lava. The insurance company deemed it an unacceptable safety risk.

  55. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 10:15 am

Coco…tru dat! That said, I still prefer them over the Irish…….

  56. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 10:19 am

Coco–the story I heard, is that risk managers from the mainland got involved, and even secured the consultation services of Lloyds of London, but even then the word on the street, was that the jewels were both too valuable and too large to adequately underwrite–they tried to even float a bond, but there was insufficient capital.

  57. haka August 28, 2014 10:23 am

    Well….ahem….Tsai’s matters!

  58. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 10:26 am

    haka…..you nailed it–!!!!! lolollololololololo

  59. cocobean August 28, 2014 10:28 am

boola. I will admit USC is my 2nd favorite football team. Growing up I was all about L A teams – Dodgers, Rams , Lakers and Trojans. The team I hated the most was ND, especially during the Parseghian Era.

  60. cocobean August 28, 2014 10:30 am

boola. thanks, now I know the rest of the story.

  61. boolakanaka August 28, 2014 10:35 am

Coco–true again, for all their top 10 recruiting classes, the marginal teams of the last 20 have been a continual source of fodder, especially since of my best friends is a huge ND fan–good fun teasing him!!!!

You Guys if the Game is Close beware Peterson loves to surprise you with “The Onside kick” that’s how Boise Got back into the game last year before we beat them.

Always get Be Ready During kickoffs Hawaii I have a feeling he plans on doing some Onside kick so Make them pay.
    Hawaii

  65. oldie August 28, 2014 12:04 pm

Thomas – Are we meeting tomorrow? Contact me at hoherb at yahoo dot com.
Otherwise, I’ll try to drop off on game day.

  66. Andrew August 28, 2014 12:05 pm

    64. Trunks420

Yes I agree. He is going to use some type of play like an onside or some other trick/unorthodox play to get the advantage if the game is close.

  67. Lurker #8 August 28, 2014 12:09 pm

    Pomai,
    UH 26
    UW 24

  68. kawika49 August 28, 2014 12:09 pm

Best way to beat the trip trick play, is penetration and disruption. That’s what she said.

  69. Tempmanoa August 28, 2014 12:11 pm

The expectation is Washington wins because of vastly superior talent– probably no one from our team could start or be a backup for UW (except Iosefa and Harding)– but effort, smarts, and consistency are important. And a few mistakes can negate superior talent. Hope for some breaks, effort and discipline to keep the game close to the end or an improved team over last year as a payoff.

Re-the news telecast of yesterdays practice

What I saw was W doing the read option play,2x, one to the left, one to the right…right behind the rt and lt. its a good play. it’s showed him carrying out his progressions very well. the newscast also showed a footage of W taking to the run in one of the games last year, also stating his stats of having run the ball for 73 yards

could this have been during individual drills? my imagination that it was 11 on 11? maybe. I just thought these type of plays should be hidden from the media. you can see different spacings, between center and QB and RB. I just it wasn’t something that should be put out there.

credit the hc, though, for closing the media after the first 1 0 minutes. thats smart.

do i think that the W hc has studied every angle there is to know? probably so.
    but you never know.

today’s thursday. this is coming along quick. 2 days away. Hope it’s a scorcher. yesterday i think the temperature (correction please) was around 88 at 430 pm the same time as it would be at kickoff on saturday.

  71. Derek August 28, 2014 12:59 pm

The last time we beat Washington, we had Colt Brennan and company. There is no Colt Brennan and company now. The last time we beat Washington, Tyrone Willingham was the UW coach. Now it’s Chris Peterson. Russell D. Russo from the Associated Press has UW 52, UH 17. There is a mis-match in talent. PAC 12 vs MW. God, I hope I’m wrong. I want to see this game go down to the wire and decided on a field goal. May the best team get lucky!

  72. kawika49 August 28, 2014 1:09 pm

Regardless the outcome, I just hope the players and fans, maintain their composure.

Derek. We’ll always come out on the short end when comparing a Power 5 school talent to ours. Even a school like Colorado has way more 3-4 star rated players than us. Talent alone doesn’t determine the outcome of a game. There’s a laundry list of factors that go into the dynamics of a game. Larry Price’s quip about superior physical superiority cancels all theory is just that, a quip and not a truism.

What scares me the most about UDUB is their trenches return intact.

  85. Tempmanoa August 28, 2014 3:38 pm

Washington’s offensive and defensive lines and their backups are the strength of the team. We have some good players on the line this season, but they do not compare to what Washington has. Nobody on our fronts could get on the field for Washington. One exception is Kennedy– he wouldn’t play today, but in another year or two he might be the kind of player that UW has. The talent gap is like the gap between the California high chool that blew out St. Louis high school last week.

But mistakes and turnovers can negate even a gap as big as we are facing. We have seen it happen before.

The “talent” of both teams will be shown on the field. Guts, determination, and, stamina is what will win for the Warriors. Get it going early and keep it up. The end will take c are of itself.

Temp, I wouldn’t say the talent gap is as wide as you think. John Bosco is in the conversation for the best HS team in the country while Saint Louis talked about as the 3rd-4th best team on Oahu.

Don’t count on a Petersen coached team making too many mistakes. We’re flat out going to have to beat’um. What may work in our favor is how much buy in there was from the UDub returnees. BSU made very few mistakes because in my opinion they were the hardest working off season team in the country. The team leaders lead off season works for conditioning and play run throughs. 100% player participation. They always started the season as one of the most prepared team. Can’t say that yet about UDub.

    according to this blog…
of the 42 people that have hawaii scoring at least 20 points, all but 2 predict a win.
of the 9 people that have hawaii scoring less than 20 points, all but 2 predict a loss.

  94. Kifi August 28, 2014 5:15 pm

#46-Yes you are right cocobean. That was Chris Petersen’s M.O.

    •Great special teams play
    •Positive turnover ratio
    •Solid run defense
•Multiple offensive style that utilizes pre-snap formations and motions to gain advantageous leverage on the opposing defense

Cocobean I doubt you will see that happening. Norm Chow is old school and humble. He will express his loss in a private way. As I had written earlier, I am a supporter of the UH Football team so when I put down a score it is not to say whether I’m right or wrong but giving my good vibes to the team so I will always have UH winning. If I was an unbiased predictor of another conference or teams than I would try to give my best take of predicting a winner and loser and score. GO RAINBOW WARRIORS AND TO YOU OUR RAINBOW WAHINES!!!

  102. pollypicador August 28, 2014 9:01 pm

Check out Joey’s live chat today on UH’s athletic site.

You will find a transcript of the live chat.

I am very impressed with Joey’s answers.

He’s the type of player you would love to root for, play with, be around, or coach.
    Very apparent the team player.

His focus is on this season, wanting to play his heart out and wanting to do his talking with his play on the field.

  103. cocobean August 28, 2014 9:25 pm

oldimer. wasn’t making a comment on Chow’s character. was just my imagination to come up with another way of saying I hope we win.

How about this …at the final whistle I hope some players give Norm a taste of the ice bucket challenge.

  104. NorthShoreFan August 28, 2014 9:47 pm

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…bootiful evening.
loved the story on Tony Grimes. Got his head on the right way. Coach Chow is a man of his word. He’s a great papa to all the players.

All I know is this, the only teams that want this first win more than us are the ones that lost every game last year! Here we cum Huskies! Let’s PAC-12 into Washington, sideways!!!

  112. thomas August 28, 2014 10:48 pm

evening gangie hope this weekend is a good one for you, its a three day weekend for those still working to keep the 808 financially solvent. beside enjoying the xtra time to energize the body remember main thing be safe.

why not start it off by attending the fball game against dem dogs, and/or volleybal wahines games against Ohio, Arizona and San Diego State . leading off this weekend victory parade was the soccer ladies who put up a ‘W’ tonight….congrats to coach bud and the wahines. come on gangie support and represent

Kden finally tonight (up on the soap box) a thumbs down on UH staff that does public announcements at games. Sure they mentioned the sat fball game and shoji beginning his 40th season. But tonight at the soccer game, the basketball wahines and coachs made an appearance to show support for their fellow student and their athletic comrades. Nothing was said. Come on athletic department management lets keep reminding those that work for athletics to make an efforts to bring to the public attention these students and the sacrifices they do in the name of University of Hawaii. You guys kill me just kill me.

on a football note…hope many here will agree me…game ball to coach n family…show support for their recent loss.. n game ball to beemer for his hard woek in getting the ‘boys’ in shape for their first win of the season…injury free…

it just burn me when I hear we don’t support the teams. the athletic admin should revisit their mission statement or re do it. it should be automatic at any event that a notice should go out when student athletes are in the house.

Nuff said gotta save my energy for sat.

  118. st. anthony trojan August 28, 2014 11:49 pm

  119. Maddog50 August 29, 2014 3:00 am

The article in todays (Friday) SA featuring Rick Blangiardi and moments from 1973 win over W…..the defensive ends were Ramsey Simmons and Simeon “the mongoose” Alo. Albert Holmes rushed for 115 yds, followed by Tui Ala”s 78 yards and Aaron Ahu with 27 yds. There were a few others. Henry Noa had two catches that day…..not long but for first downs, Elton Shintaku at TE had 36 yds on two cathces including a 19 yarder that was key. It was certainly a great day to be a Warrior and the team went on to finish 9-2 if I recall. Everyone would like to recall Casey Ortiz and Allen Brown as the heroes but Albert and Tui at least on offense were the key elements in giving us a chance. Browns 41yard shoulder catch at the boundary is still clear in my memory—–Go Warriors!!!!!

  120. Pomaikaikeolahou August 29, 2014 4:17 am

To continue what Thomas was commenting, I have been to a few MBB, WBB and WVB at the SS and never once have I heard “Na Wahine Softball team is taking on the University of _______ tomorrow at the RWSS, game starts at 6:00PM” but at the RWSS during their games they mention any and all games being played at the SS or at Murakami stadium. It seems that the trend of UHAD is to promote only the Revenue sports….

They do go by a script and to get them to change is difficult, we have tried many of times to have them announce that the booster club is taking application for membership and they can’t even do that and it’s our own games…….They need a new marketing team for sure, but we have been saying that for like what 10 years now.

    OK pau for now!!!!

  121. Shoko August 29, 2014 6:31 am

Perhaps the strange anomalies is the result of website being hacked!

Then again, why would anyone want to hack a website devoted to sports.

  122. Shoko August 29, 2014 6:34 am

Interesting that the Boise State-Ole Miss game had an attendance just under 33,000.

I remember Tui Ala, RB from Waianae HS. He was around 5’7 210 pounds. Like trying to tackle a fire hydrant.

  127. Old School Dave August 29, 2014 7:46 am

UH – 34 UW- 27. UH turns the tables and they win many games by 7 points or more this season. The play of Ikaika and the D are the keys.

Tony Grimes started his UH football career featured in SI. He was BURNED on
first play of game by USC for TD. Last year he was constantly beat while
playing corner and then he disappeared. He lost his confidence as football
player…very evident by body language. Life goes on…. Good news he
gets a degree and moves on with his life.
