With the bad weather, new coaches, and new players on both sides, I think this game should be a “toss-up”…I think whoever gets out of the gates quickly will win this game. I’ll be at the game, will you?

Who on the UH team is going to keep up with Nelson Spruce ? In last year’s game, he had 13 catches for 172 yds, 71 coming on a TD.

Anybody have a link to the game for us viewers on the east coast?

You always say take one game at a time, but when you look at the whole picture today’s game is so HUGE. Win and Hawaii shows the potential to be a serious contender in the Mountain West and has the chance to possibly make it to a bowl game. Colorado, in my opinion, will be a better team than last year’s version. QB Liufau is more mature, more experienced, etc. The Buffaloes have a lot of returning starters including their top receiver, Spruce. I hope Hawaii is a better team than last year too! Weather conditions will play a part in the game and depth is critical. Somebody is going to make the big mistake and I hope it’s not us. We are at home so Hawaii has a chance, even though the attendance will be down. But, it’s on national TV so it’s important to do well. Lose and we are looking a 1-4 start to begin the conference slate. Win and I see a 7-6 record and a bowl game. So, let’s be positive and win this game for the entire State of Hawaii.
    We’ll see what happens.

  18. cobupi September 3, 2015 10:19 am

    GO BOWS!!!

Basing on last few opening games scores,
    UH 16
    Colorado 28

    But hope I am wrong
    GO BOWS!!!

  19. Shoko September 3, 2015 10:21 am

Playing a game in Hawaii when your body clock thinks its 11:00 pm (CT) is going to be tough. I wonder what the strategy MacIntyre used to try to help his players offset the effects of the time zone change.

  20. WarriorNY September 3, 2015 10:23 am

    Boola,
Its on CBS Sports Network so you should be able to get it from your cable… 1 AM start time. If you still need a link later on, check back closer to kickoff…

  21. nutmegger September 3, 2015 10:24 am

I think I have the world’s most interesting music in the world.

I don’t always listen to local music, but when I do, it’s John Cruz.

    And his music travels.

In 2005, Aimee Mann’s opening act, at the Hawaii Theater, covered “Island Style”.

And just recently, John Fogerty(that’s “Frogtree” for Rap Replinger fans) gave a shout-out to Cruz, calling “Island Style” as good as anything he’s ever heard.

I also like “Moonlight Lady” by The Gabby Pahinui Band.

Lots of thunder and lightning and rain here in the Aloha Stadium area.
Wonder if the game will be postponed or canceled.

  30. madeinhawaii September 3, 2015 11:29 am

    Islandman….
RE #12, who will cover Spruce? … probably the guy who beat out our 2nd best tackler and safety, Trayvon Henderson, for the starting position. Should be an exciting matchup. If the Warriors can put some pressure on their QB, I expect to see a number of takeaways.

  31. Tofuzuke September 3, 2015 11:32 am

Colorado fans… Welcome and aloha to our tropical paradise! This isn’t the mile high country, hope u feel it (Humidity) every minute you’re out of your hotel! Too bad your team has to play at 11pm mountain time! Watch out for the hurricane like weather!! Ask your tour guide if its safe to leave your hotel room! Warriors come out to playyyyyy!!!!!!

  40. Cook 'Em September 3, 2015 12:18 pm

I’m catching the bus after work from Downtown to the game — at least 1/2 hour walking plus 1 hour bus ride. The weather is unbelievably awful and weather radar looks even worse. Is there any way to find out under what circumstances the game might be postponed or canceled? Would hate to make the trek needlessly.

  41. Andrew September 3, 2015 12:24 pm

If the game is postponed/canceled, send the bill with any associated costs to Ben Jay. I would be pissed if we don’t get a “quality” home game until after Boise State (I don’t count UC Davis).

Appreciate a weather update from Gigi. So Gigi, what is the weather like in your area?

  51. Old School Dave September 3, 2015 1:51 pm

Still hear rumbling in the distant sky. Nothing those Buffs haven’t heard before – nasty thunder/lightening storms where they’re from.

I like the idea mentioned by MadDog50 regarding NIU and generating student attendance. Small-kine (unscientific) idea to get more UH students to games: When they enter the stadium showing their UH ID, they get a ticket with a number on it. Each game, give out 50 – free L & L or Zippy’s plate lunches by calling out those with the lucky numbers. Winners need to get their tickets stamped at the end of the game for verification and to show that they stayed for the whole game. College students and food are still synonymous, I think. Something Eddie Flores may be interested in?

  52. Willie September 3, 2015 1:53 pm

Sorry for the bachi. Shortly after commenting, big thunder clap and the electricity cycled off, TV rebooting now. Got real dark and raining heavily.

H-Man, right now it is not good with big drops coming down. It is not a Gigi weather report but I am not that far away from Halawa.

  53. z September 3, 2015 1:57 pm

Rain reay heavy now. If it does not let up I can see the game being cancelled. Not good.

  54. gigi-hawaii September 3, 2015 2:10 pm

Thunder and lightning and rain here in the stadium area.
Electricity went off briefly and came back on.
    Not good football weather.
If you plan to attend the game, bring your ponchos.
    And wear rubber slippers.
We’ll be watching the game on TV.

    Howz It Tsaiko Nation !

Well we are FINALLY here with this highly anticipated football game opening up UH football season. Hope the BOWS just play well and show improvement on both areas of the ball. Colorado is a sleeper in the Pac 12 this season but they do bring back experience in their skill positions and their coaching staff from last year intact.

Ready here in Los Angeles as I have my Hawaii visor on courtesy of the Punchbowl Kid ( Mahalo Bra ) with all the amenities of my home on top of Ladera Heights. This game is HUGE as hopeful we will play well enough and pull this puppy out !

Will be up late watching in anticipation. Let’s Go Bows !

    POSTED: 2:26 p.m. HST, Sep 3, 2015
    LAST UPDATED: 2:26 p.m. HST, Sep 3, 2015

University of Hawaii and Aloha Stadium officials are monitoring lightning Thursday afternoon, hoping it doesn’t get close enough to suspend the start of UH’s season-opening football game against Colorado scheduled for a 7:04 p.m. kickoff.

If lightning strikes are detected within eight miles of the stadium, UH athletic director David Matlin will be notified, an then Matlin would then inform the game’s head official who would suspend play, Matlin said in a text this afternoon.

“At six miles we clear the field and stands and wait for a 30-minute period,” Matlin said.

After that, if there are no hits within eight miles play can continue.

Around 1:30 p.m., heavy rain, lightning and thunder pounded Oahu after moderate off-and-on rain near the stadium earlier in the day.

  76. m September 3, 2015 4:16 pm

Yes I have the high def radar app. The only thing I can see is to the east towards Molokai. As long as it does not drift this way we are good. The stadium just needed a bath.

  77. Hilo-Warrior September 3, 2015 4:21 pm

I am hoping for some double rainbow action in Halawa right now.

  86. David J. September 3, 2015 5:30 pm

    GO WARRIORS! GO LUCK!.
I just got my ticket for Hawaii game at Las Vegas. I went to Thomas Mac to get they said that? They only have 25 for that game only! . Don’t laugh the University is copying the same football schedule like the University of Hawaii for the future!. That’s show they have to copy someone!. I wonder if Hawaii ever schedule Oklahoma, Florida State and LSU to play in the year?. Would the UNLV will copy Hawaii?. Why? I’m saying this? Because University of Hawaii will always be put down as a team that can’t play any sports!. Because the mainland schools are 100% better then Hawaii! . Some people up here say that Hawaii should move to a Division III school! HAWAII WARRIORS WILL SHOW THEM!!!.

  87. Isleboy September 3, 2015 5:30 pm

  123. WarriorNY September 3, 2015 8:16 pm

Ok… After that horrible INT, you see what kind of QB we have by how he rebounds… Next throw, 79 yard TD pass to Kemp.
I’m drinking the Kool-Aid… Wittek is our best qb since Colt…

Aiya defense needs to find a way to stop Atkins

  128. chopsueyboy September 3, 2015 8:36 pm

    Tarheel Warrior.
Been a Tarheel basketball fan since the 1960’s (But I still bleed green). Our son made a bucket list dream come true, took us to Duke-UNC game at Chapel Hill, then 11 games in 4 days at ACC Tournament in Greensboro earlier this year. People are so friendly in that state, we enjoyed their version of Aloha Spirit. Transplant to Seattle area a couple of months ago

  129. winning September 3, 2015 8:39 pm

    SAME OL SAME OL!!

  130. Tarheel warrior September 3, 2015 8:49 pm

Chopsueyboy, son went to Chapel Hill during the Dean Smith and Mack Brown era. But I have always been a warrior fan since I can remember. Nice bucket list.

  131. chopsueyboy September 3, 2015 8:56 pm

If we go back again, I’ll let you know. Are you near Chapel Hill? Son targeting future ACC Tournament when it’s held in NYC

  132. oldtimer808 September 3, 2015 9:00 pm

The weather looks clear for the rest of the night. So far this team has so much potential. Good first half and if we can get a couple of touchdowns in the 3rd qtr and keep Colorado down. Harris looks good.

  133. oneseason September 3, 2015 9:02 pm

Very much improved from last year. But … Hawaii play calling in the last series looked disturbingly Chow-like. Burned a lot of time before calling first timeout.

  134. z September 3, 2015 9:06 pm

Play calling was okay. Tightend should have caught the ball. And you don’t want to leave your opponent much time after you score.

  135. Hilo-Warrior September 3, 2015 9:06 pm

Ya it looks like this offense is a perfect fit for Harris and hopefully Saint Juste when he comes off his injury. I expect to see more harris runs in the second half. And I hope to see a couple big runs. He got close to breaking it open twice.

  136. madeinhawaii September 3, 2015 9:06 pm

Defense looked winded… Coaches needed to give them a break, control the ball and try to get well into FG range… they succeeded… We still have two more quarters to play.

  137. kimo browner September 3, 2015 9:13 pm

Luke Shawley is awesome. 10 TT, 7 solo,1 sack, 1 TFL. That is for one half!
So far, despite sloppy play by both teams, Hawaii hanging in there.

  138. WreckinEyez September 3, 2015 9:18 pm

Defense just need to tweek the line a little and work on everyone getting winded fast… after that, this will be a great year. Love the aggressiveness. Let’s see how they do in the second half…

  139. madeinhawaii September 3, 2015 9:34 pm

Hey? Did we just go back to Chow ball in the 2nd half?

  140. WreckinEyez September 3, 2015 9:36 pm

And just like that, Defense has to go back out. No wonder they get tired fast.

  141. rundown808 September 3, 2015 9:38 pm

Where is walk on prospect WR Malik Lockett?
I heard he’s a full time student at UH Manoa. Followed him on line and he’s not your average walk on player. Cmon Man? I don’t think a talent like this comes around everyday.

  142. NYUHTXSK September 3, 2015 9:52 pm

ST injured? Not seeing the tweets.

  145. chopsueyboy September 3, 2015 9:56 pm

    WARRIORS 28 Colorado 20
final. 18/34 Max Wittek 190 yards was enough for a win. Rigoberto Sanchez 2/2 long 34 yards field goal attempt was good. Two most valuable players for the Warriors. And Hawai’i picks up a win over Colorado.

  196. UHfan808 September 4, 2015 12:10 am

Whoops! Sorry for misspelling your name earlier, Max Wittek! :/

    http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2015-08-25/ncaa-football-need-know-rules-changes-2015-season

  200. Tiki808 September 4, 2015 12:20 am

Other wins in M.W.C. play; Nevada over U.C. Davis, San Jose State over New Hampshire, Utah State over Southern Utah, in week 1 of college play.

  201. cocobean September 4, 2015 12:21 am

I was at the game and couldn’t understand what happened at the end. After the receiver caught the last pass there still was 9-10 seconds on the clock. Thought that was enough time to line up and get off another play. Did the TV broadcasters explain what happened. Seemed like the CU players were acting like the clock was stopped.

  202. H-Man September 4, 2015 12:22 am

Warriors win. It’s a good day. And it didn’t rain. Defense played good, especially the secondary. Kory Rasmussen was a stud in the middle.

  203. H-Man September 4, 2015 12:27 am

I too was at the game and it seems Colorado’s offense did not know what play to call and the O-line was not setting up as time ran out.

  204. Shoko September 4, 2015 3:59 am

Glad for Chow and the rest of the team to get their first win of the season. Very good performances in all three phases of the game. Got a little hairy at the end but I think this was a solid win and a confidence builder heading to Ohio. Was up till 2:00 am but worth it!

    201. No timeouts left and mass confusion. The whole game was strange. Seemed like the Buffs didn’t come out to play. Think they not used to playing late night football as it was 3:00 am back in Boulder when the game ended.

  205. cappie the dog September 4, 2015 4:39 am

Marcus Kemp needs to stay healthy for the duration of the season.

That is my main impression of the game.

    What a great win.

Way more fun than watching three hours of MSNBC.

  206. Chopsueyboy September 4, 2015 5:19 am

    UHfan808
Score prediction was pure luck, didn’t notice Wayne took my original scores, had to revise

  207. Maddog50 September 4, 2015 6:37 am

Ended at 4 am for me. Great win, with lotsa stuff to work on. One thing for sure the OL did just fine for first game gotta improve. DL what can I say KT Luke Kiko and Kory did just fine. Too many dropped balls. Special teams need work. The holding by CU OL was blatant and disgustingly not called. A tribute to the D who was all over them. Next up the Buckeyes. With a few tweaks they will be able to move the ball and score points. Hope they are rested and well. Go Warriors!!!!

  208. justsomeguy September 4, 2015 6:46 am

Was up till 5am on the east coast watching the game, I had class at 10am. It was rough, but worth every minute. In class struggling, with a smile on my face. There was clearly a lot to improve on, but at this point I’ll take wins however we can get them. GO BOWS.

  209. WarriorNY September 4, 2015 7:00 am

    justsomeguy,
I was up till 5 AM as well. What a game… but man I’m lagging at work. I keep checking back for a new post or something but I realize everyone is still sleeping in Hawaii…

  210. Da Punchbowl Kid September 4, 2015 7:12 am

    Weeee – hawwww!!!

Great start for a team in a new offense and defense. Lots kinks to work out but even more promise to build on.

    Good morning WarriorNY! πŸ™‚

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  211. Inyoface September 4, 2015 7:15 am

    Morning DPK,
What a game.! Wittek threw some passes last night that were just MONEY… Those TD passes were gorgeous. A few drops knocks his numbers down but he has NFL arm…

Great win by Bows. Former Monarch Wittek is what it is. Good, the bad and the Ugly. Should see a vast improvement after the next couple of road tests. Kick coverage is fixable, we hope. D will carry us as far as we go.

Nice first game win. Plenty of room for improvement. But, my initial thoughts were as follows: really nice energy (has a much different feel from last year); people were flashing athletic ability in a lot of different positions (team is mos def, more athletic than past years); better separation from receivers–and it was noticeable; dbs as a unit played much better and tighter coverage; and with all due respect afforded to Ikaika, Max is a very nice upgrade at QB (he showed not just arm strength, but nice touch).

    215. Agree. Although I get nervous at times when Wittek stares his target down. I said early in the game that i can see a pick 6 possible the way he looks down his target. Then DE jumps in and almost takes it to house.

Won’t mention players names specifically unless it’s good-there will be adjustments as we move thru as always. Special teams among other things will be adjusted. Not sure but I think the OL did well enough not to evoke any changes, we will see. Funny I read all the articles about this game and it comes down to the final play even on ESPN as if they would have tied the game and or won. The QB got almost half the rushing yards because he was being chase around the yard!!!!! See you in Columbus!!!!!

Two areas of concern 4 me…the 2 interceptions… can really hurt…n the number of punts…was noted 10 punts…tells me they are not moving the ball consistent…not good…much room for major improvement there..

But nice win… now at least 6 more wins to go… n hopefully more…if we can 2 of the next 3…we be in good shape..

    Great Morning All!

The sun rose brightly this morning. Great wins will do that…

I liked the posts. Good read about what’s being said. And agree lots of room for improvement on offense. Loved the effort by the defense, especially the play of Kory Rasmussen.

  221. Akamai Okole September 4, 2015 8:23 am

    Lots to be happy about.

    Kemp – Hawaii’s Beast Mode 😯
Wittek – finally QB1 can make all the throws πŸ™‚
    Fonua – GW “pass break-up” πŸ˜† 😈

Overall defense looked improved but gotta single out Shawley…Warriors’ Special Force

  223. Inyoface September 4, 2015 8:26 am

    Kennedy was playing really well.

  224. Kanole September 4, 2015 8:37 am

A lot of talk about the last play of the game where time ran out on Colorado. This is on them. No timeouts with only seconds left. You have to throw the ball into the endzone or at the very least enough yards to get a first down to stop the clock. End of story.

    @Akamai Okole

Fonua might have gotten the game ball for that game clinching play….

Wondering about DL Coach Samuseva’s thoughts about Tulimasealii’s game pants (shorts) and the fully exposed knees!?!?

A win is a win! It was ugly at times, but there were some good things too.

Lakalaka looked lost. He missed that block on the second play for UH that almost put MW out for the game. MW has got to get that chemistry down with the backs! I counted 3 missed handoffs…back and QB going different direction on the play, etc. Receivers dropping passes, but MW needs to know when to use touch too. He throws bullets to guys 5 yards away! If he’s going to do that he needs to hit the receiver in the numbers. The high pass bouncing off ‘Unga’s hands that was intercepted should have been an easy pitch and catch.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to see if UH can compete at a high level with OSU and get out of there with no major injuries.

  232. boolakanaka September 4, 2015 9:49 am

I agree that QP needs to switched out of his return duties–for the mere fact that you don’t want your #1 receiver taking that kind of mileage.

  233. PONO September 4, 2015 9:50 am

Were there any major injuries sustained last night? Gener’s injury didn’t look good and Faalologo was in and out often.
