“Football Festivus”

Nick Rolovich was facing a unique dilemma.

The final spring practice usually is on a Friday or Saturday to accommodate a spring game and festivities. This spring ball will end on Thursday, March 23, because the UH students won’t be around campus the following evening. Spring break officially starts that weekend.

So Rolovich decided to expand the fun. There will be a scrimmage on March 23, as planned. But he also is working on details for a blowout bash on Saturday, March 18. The event would feature celebrity coaches, games, food booths, a celebrity DJ, musical acts, celebrity musical acts, regular prizes, really good prizes, and a scrimmage.

The event probably would start in the late afternoon to get the spillover crowd from that day’s baseball game.

As both a fan of Seinfeld and alliterations, Rolovich likes the idea of calling the event Football Festivus.

Rolovich still is in the mad scientist’s planning stages. He welcomes your suggestions.

    first?

  2. Bryson February 22, 2017 9:34 am

Rolo should hold his Junior day during the same day so the recruits can get a sense of what UH football means to Hawai’i and what they could represent by staying home…

  3. NorthShoreFan February 22, 2017 10:25 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
ST, your experience of past Spring scrimmages, would you say there was a good number of students who attended? I know Coach Rolo is looking to ramp up student support but my observation is that on campus athletic events has more non-student support/attendance.
    Maybe a
Friday afternoon or Saturday afternoon event might draw more. It could lead up to baseball at night….random thoughts
    btw…like your baseball reports.

I think that having to pay a $7.00 parking fee to watch a practice or Spring Scrimmage is kinda steep. I wish they would “waive” the fee if they want people to attend the scrimmage, etc. I’m not saying I’m cheap, but there is other things I could use the $7.00 for and I’m even thinking of bicycling to the campus to see the practices or parking off campus and walking.

  5. Stephen Tsai February 22, 2017 11:02 am

    Bowwar
I think they sometimes waive the fee. But you’re right, it is an inconvenience. There are no parking guards on Sundays … except when there’s a volleyball or baseball event. At the least, the athletic department should get the event parking fees

#4 I usually park off campus in the area behind Puck’s alley and walk . Its still closer than when I parked on Manoa road and walked to my upper campus classes. I too have better things to do with seven dollars.

There is a little side street, Varsity Place I think….where there is street parking (parallel style) and the walk up to the practice field is only like 4-5 minutes. It’s not as close as the garage, but it’s free…used to park my car there back in the day cause couldn’t afford the semester parking pass.

  8. Derek February 22, 2017 11:23 am

As a senior, we’re looking for senior discounts or anything that don’t costs too much as many of us are on now fixed income. So, NO, I’m not paying to see a spring game.
It’s enough to go on one road trip a year, this year against UCLA, to see them play.
So, I’m waiting for the rest of the football schedule and if Matlin is going to schedule a 13th regular season game. Depending on when the Reno game is, I may want to go to that one too. If it’s in November, forget it.

I think in order to increase student participation, one idea could be to network through the various student organizations. Student Organizations are always looking for ways to fundraise and also work with the community, so working with them whether it be letting them open a food booth, or a games booth would be an idea to possibly venture. I was in a business club at UH and they’re very active with a lot of members. The clubs would always do fundraising events at nightclubs and those nights were always some of the busiest as members network and promote pretty heavily. Getting a bunch of them involved would also get more students involved since of course the members have friends, and their friends have friends, etc etc.

Not only students though, another idea would be to also do something similar to the grandslam event that baseball does yearly. Invite a bunch of local restaurants that support UH to open food booths. The more variety that is offered, the more people may

    attend*

  11. H-Man February 22, 2017 11:53 am

One word to describe UH students – apathetic. Did the parking fee go up? It was $5 before 4pm and $6 after 4. I don’t mind paying the fee, but the money should go to UH Athletics for such events. Otherwise, the parking fee goes to the state general fund? Food booths. Last spring fling, there was a vegan food truck and a sushi truck. How about unhealthy chili-dog plate, teri-beef plate with white rice and mac salad? I liked the players mingling with the fans to shake hands, thanking the fans for coming, and picture taking. Got to meet Marcus Kemp. He was super cool.

  12. jm2375 February 22, 2017 11:59 am

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Parking fee is $6 after 4 pm weekdays and all day on weekends.
Fees go towards paying for the parking structure.
(Same fee applies at the Med School, not sure what that’s paying for)

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  13. turfwar February 22, 2017 12:10 pm

I’m ok with the parking fee but some of it should start to go towards maintaining the parking garage. It’s turning into a dump with rubbish, oil spots, lights that need replacing, etc. Power wash the facility once a year at least and while they’re at it clean the athletic facility too. Who’s in charge of maintenance down there? Horrendous job.

  14. bowwar February 22, 2017 12:12 pm

I stand corrected, that it may be $6 not $7, but it is still steep, if you’re only wanting to watch practice…Like ST said, I think the parking fee should go to the athletic department on the weekends or whenever they have events. I can’t believe it goes for paying the parking structure, as it’s been there over 20 years and I don’t believe we’re still paying for it. I’ll try to find “free” parking somewhere close by and walk it or bike it…

  15. Jonj February 22, 2017 12:30 pm

I think if you can’t pay $7 for parking, then you should be working, instead of watching a practice! Lol

  16. Old School Dave February 22, 2017 12:42 pm

How about televising the Spring Game? Another way of exposing the program state wide and beyond (streaming video). I watch the spring games of Pac-12 teams on the Pac-12 Network. Hello OC-16 or KGMB?

    Great Afternoon All!

    3/18 – BaseBows 1st pitch vs. Indiana at 1:05pm

Rolo: How about booking the Bud Light Bullpen for that game and sell booster participation packages with some “reserved” seating next door for the football scrimmage? Maybe even keep the bullpen available for some “refreshments” after the scrimmage? A meet and greet with coaches, too?

    …das it

  19. akuhead2 February 22, 2017 1:05 pm

Unlike Aku Head, akuhead2 is not first! And, I am also still searching for the rest of the football schedule before I start making plans. But I am planning on making plans!

  20. Ganiks February 22, 2017 1:10 pm

Is Marcus Mariota available to do a signing? Any other big time UH players available? How about doing a tribute to the 06 and 07 teams where there were so many NFL drafted players in those classes- Ilaoa, Alama-Francis, L. Peters, Mauia, Colt, Bess, Grice-Mullins, Rivers, Pilares, Kelly. I know it’s a longshot to get these guys but just to have something of the caliber of how it was when there was lines upon lines to get autographs of guys like Brennan, Noa, Rivers at Pictures Plus in Kahala Mall. Stuff like that. Touch up on the tradition of what was Warrior Football especially since we seem to be headed back to those greater days. Go Warriors!

  21. NorthShoreFan February 22, 2017 1:14 pm

I’m trying to make plans for an event to take place in November. Hard to do because I’d like it to not conflict with UH football. Planning a plan will need to be adjusted because we don’t have a schedule yet. Anyhoo, can’t be helped because we will have a game on the day I planning on. Hoping it’s away and not at home.

  22. NorthShoreFan February 22, 2017 1:15 pm

Will we have another CB behind center? Stay tuned.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/ole-miss-football-self-imposes-post-season-ban-after-updated-charges-from-ncaa/ar-AAneCCN?ocid=spartanntp
“The “lack of institutional control” charge is huge, and likely means the school is headed for a rough collision with the NCAA Committee on Infractions. Whatever is in that updated notice of allegations has to be substantial for a program to self-impose a postseason ban.”

  24. H-Man February 22, 2017 2:56 pm

You mean QB behind center? If it’s a freshman, that’s okay, but otherwise, I would like to see a JC OT join the team where this position is awfully thin on experience.

  25. bowwar February 22, 2017 3:05 pm

#15: No worry, I work and I’ve been a season ticket holder for 38 years and counting…However, I don’t waste my money either. How about you?

  26. leron February 22, 2017 3:08 pm

MWC has usually released schedule the first week of March, which is coming up soon. Also waiting to see when the road games will be scheduled.

  27. Ipu Man February 22, 2017 3:38 pm

Let’s face it. The crowds for UH sports
over the years have come from locals
who live near by—God Bless Them.
    Long Live Kaimuki!
    Never forget the Termite Palace.
People used to be able to park on the sidewalks.
    πŸ™‚

  28. bowwar February 22, 2017 3:54 pm

#27: In some ways, they should have just built a stadium on the old termite palace site. They still can, as the park is there they can take over the Stadium Bowl o’ Drome site, etc. A 30,000 or 40,000 stadium work out just fine. They should just keep adding onto Ching Field every year till it has $40,000 seats…That way, they’ll avoid all the “hu-hu” and just be renovating every year to add additional seats. Even if they were able to have 20,000 seats at Ching Field, they could fill it up for some “low level” opponent and build interest. It’s just ridiculous that UH can’t keep the vending, parking, and other income at the “no Aloha” stadium and pay a ridiculous rental cost…

  29. shadow February 22, 2017 3:58 pm

    Suggestion for Coach:
Not this spring, but how about a “Warrior 5K Fun Walk/Run” on the last day of full contact scrimmage come this fall.
    – Nominal registration fee (maybe $10 UH students/kids and $20 non students & give β€œfree” UH football run/walk participant T shirt.
    – Short walk/run thru the beautiful campus back to UH stadium
    – Serve refreshments
    – Watch last scrimmage.
    – Give out prizes after (Best Spirit shown by individuals & teams) during the walk/run. Prizes could be Sideline Passes to 1 game, or ticket vouchers to a game, etc. Meet players/take pics.

Great way to drum up interest/enthusiasm from students & community just before start of season, plus potential fund raiser for football team needs. This walk/run has potential to grow I think. (Think Aloha Run – how much it grew & now brings in!)

Could expand to next Spring too & have “Spring Warrior Fun Walk/Run” before the Spring scrimmage.

  30. madeinhawaii February 22, 2017 6:12 pm

You would think that the parking structure has been paid for many times over by now.

  31. Ran February 22, 2017 6:57 pm

I agree with “ganiks”, get an all star lineup of former UH athletes to do a signing. That would bring out all the collectors….like me!

  32. burro sabio February 22, 2017 8:04 pm

MIH – they keep making new parking structures.

  33. 808warriorfan February 22, 2017 9:19 pm

#27 … “IPU MAN” … brah how’s about this for a replacement for Aloha Stadium … knock down the old “Bowl-O-Drome and build the new Stadium where the old “Termite Place” was … give the UH students a “deal” to attend and make seating around 35,000 … only problem would be parking … but if the C & C was smart, which they aren’t, they’d beef up “The Bus” so people wouldn’t have to drive …

  34. 808warriorfan February 22, 2017 9:19 pm

    OOPS … FORGOT

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  36. Warrior Dave February 22, 2017 11:13 pm

I was told it was UH policy to not over recruit. Didn’t make sense to me since top tier players will go to P 5 schools. Love the aggressiveness Coach Rolo!!!

  37. Maukamom February 23, 2017 12:06 am

I like Coach Rolo’s plans. He’s really doing a good job trying to get fans excited.

What about adding a short scrimmage between current and former UH Players?
I think that would be fun to watch and might bring back some fans.

Looking forward to whatever ends up being planned.

  38. mileHIwarrior February 23, 2017 5:55 am

No can hanapa’a if you no cast da line right? Go fo’ it Coach!

  39. Ipu Man February 23, 2017 7:01 am

808, like your idea. But include a bowling alley
in the stadium, with the lease money going to the
athletic department, of course. And don’t forget
    to sell peanuts πŸ™‚

  40. Ipu Man February 23, 2017 7:04 am

While we are at it, make it an “indoor” stadium
with the ability to include an ice rink and create
a UH hockey team…for both men and women.
    πŸ™‚

  41. Ipu Man February 23, 2017 7:05 am

    And bring back gymnastics.

  42. Ipu Man February 23, 2017 7:07 am

Coach Rolo, there’s a nice hiking trail
right up the hill behind the East West Center…
Take your team on a hike…and picnic on top
midway. Only a few hardy ones would be able
to go on further to the top πŸ™‚

  43. Maddog50 February 23, 2017 7:48 am

    Suggestions-
    Have players from each decade
Get L Price R Blangiardi Jim Rodden Rich Miano, JJ and others who coached-
Outdoor Big screen viewing of clips of great game highlights and past season
Na Koa should hustle the crowd and offer “Special Membership” at low cost to include Na Koa shirt-right now only get shirt with $250 membership-
Jerseys thru the years display maybe helmets.
lotsa things you can do but it takes x and $
