Clay built

Former UH safety Charles Clay is a self-made player — CLAYBUILT, as his Twitter handle says.

A two-time walk-on — first at SMU, then at UH before going on scholarship as a senior in 2013 — Clay parlayed an impressive showing at pro day in 2014 into a tryout and then free-agent contract with the Green Bay Packers. (He was cut by the Packers at the end of training camp.)

This week, Clay signed a two-year contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. There is an option for a third year. The CFL minimum is $52,000 for a five-month period.

“We’ll see how it rides out,” said Clay, a Hilo High alumnus. “I’m in great shape. I couldn’t be in a better position right now.”

Clay switched from wideout to safety during his first year at UH. At the 2014 pro day, scouts gave him these marks: 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 37 1/2 inches in the vertical jump, and 9 feet, 11 inches in the broad jump.

Last year, he had a brief stay in the CFL, making it to Ottawa’s final cut.

He then joined the Gene Simmons-owned LA KISS of the Arena Football League.

“I took the opportunity for what it was,” Clay said. “I got better at perfecting my craft, working the techniques.”

But Clay set a goal of playing on a “bigger stage.” He did that literally. The CFL playing field is 110 yards in length, 65 yards in width.

“I told myself I was going to do a bunch of tryouts this year,” said Clay, who attended Hamilton’s audition in February in Los Angeles. “The Hamilton one was the only one I did, and it ended up being perfect.”

Clay, who is 5 feet 11 1/2, now weighs between 215 and 220 pounds. He said he is being asked to compete at weak-side linebacker.

Clay said he has never paid attention to the critics.

“Even the most successful people have doubters,” Clay said. “If you worry about ’em, you’re always going to worry about ’em. I really enjoy competing. I really feel I’m in the position to play the best football of my life.”

When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into?

Now that we Saints Qb Tua
Who do we consider as the next player we gotta get to stay home? Is Bama in town recruiting others? Is USC ,
    Aburn, and other schools?

The Creator has control over the created object. The created object, therefore, has no right to demand anything from it’s creator. It’s very existence depends on him.
Keeping this perspective removes any temptation to have pride in personal achievement.

Was there ever a time when a 4 Star athlete from Hawaii stayed home to play for UH?

If it never happened what makes one give hope to that occurring in this new super conference v the pauper conference world?

UH’ s job is much tougher as they need to find lumps of coal and get them to become true diamonds. So when folk lament about poor recruitment, I don’t make too much of that. It is what it is and we, the pauper conference schools just have to teach better and hopefully a few blossom. Such is our reality. And so I always remain hopeful and supportive.

  14. C-Pop May 5, 2016 3:34 pm

Has UH ever signed 4 star recruit ( since stars rankings began)? Te’o 5 star, Buckner 4, C. Kaumatule 4. Probably more 4 *recruits. Many others I can’t name, I’m sure there are bloggers out there that can? Stars rankings or lack of stars don’t necessarily mean destined for stardom or failure! Marcus Mariota prime example of 3 Star ranked prospect with 5 star plus results with more success projected for him in NFL.

  15. willieboy May 5, 2016 3:37 pm

    wasn’t tulimasealii a 4star?

  16. C-Pop May 5, 2016 3:40 pm

Boise State football program prime example for types of mid to lower level ranked recruits that have helped the Broncos dominate their conference overtime. They have found many diamonds in the rough who have moved on to success in the NFL.

  17. C-Pop May 5, 2016 3:47 pm

June Jones & Bob Wagner did it in their best Warrior years! Recruited well with “profile” kids nation & pacific basin.

  18. cheepono May 5, 2016 4:01 pm

we had a handful of 4 star jc guys.
Josh Leonard was a 4 star jc guy (RIP)
Mike Edwards was another 4 star jc guy
Chad Kalilimoku was our only 5 star player ever. also a jc guy.
I think braddah Samson Satele was a consensus 3 star across all ranking systems and was a 4 star on one of em. possibly our highest rated high school player that committed to us straight out of high school.

how coincidental is the commitment of Tua and his parents finding a job and housing so quickly after son commits to Bama

did parents go job and house hunting on Tua’s recruiting trip? 2, 3 days at most and they find job(s) and a house? have they sold their current home in Hawaii?

    jus asking!

  21. A-House May 5, 2016 7:02 pm

    NSF:

Agasiva committed to UH, but never had the grades and went to JC?

with offers coming in doubt he will return to UH tho’ would be nice to have him complete his intent.

  22. kahuna May 5, 2016 8:00 pm

Parent buy house quickly so Tua cannot change his mind in case he has a change of heart and wants to go elsewhere.

Parents way to forcing Tua remain committed to Alabama. Honestly ….I think that is a hasty move by their parents. What if something happens to Tua that make him change his mind….like the qb coach quits or some NCAA violation pops up or Nick Saban decided to move on or even Tua develops a relationship with someone in Hawaii and wants to stay here.

Mom and Pop need to let go of the leash and let the boy grow up on his own. Having mommy and daddy tagging along will be extra pressure on him.

  23. legistlature May 5, 2016 8:13 pm

Kahuna no worry the Family got this under control

  24. el burro sabio May 5, 2016 8:14 pm

Taulia not going sign with Alabama if he’s going to sit for 2 years behind his brother.

  25. el burro sabio May 5, 2016 8:15 pm

I guess some bars open at 9 am.

  26. kev-1 May 5, 2016 10:22 pm

I think the question was what is “Taulia plans for the rest of his high school career if his parents are moving.” Not whether or not he plays college ball for Alabama.

  27. clyde May 5, 2016 10:41 pm

OK, before this gets out of hand, who is saying — with authority — that the Tagovailoa family is moving to Alabama?

    # 21…Kahuna….martin-denny stadium in alabama…holds 101 thousand plus…we have to presume that a few luxury boxes there are sponsored by sum “big”

Legislature & Gov tooting their trumpets by passing “affordable” housing bill

What is “affordable” to them may mean doots to the homeless who have limited or no income – for me, affordable is $750/month – what about you?

Legislature has been discussing “cooling” some schools for months now; maybe, years – Deputy Sup says on KITV news this morning they have no idea “how” to use the $100,000,000 set aside or where to start – damn poor leadership/planning IMHO!!!! and, a very stupid statement to make on TV.

And if you’re wondering who’s recruiting Jordan Agasiva, here’s a fairly current list:
    >> Jordan Agasiva, OL, Pima College (Mililani), 6-5, 310: Auburn, Boise State, Brigham Young, Central Florida, Colorado State, Hawaii, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Missouri, New Mexico State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Texas Tech, Utah, Washington State.

A-House…affordable to me is less then 100 bucks…my small 3 bedroom apt here in Manila is under 100…

Second…poor planning is so spot on…how can ne elected official vote to approve a a bill to give bucks to ne one org. n not ask a few questions is beyond me..
