Circle of giving

A couple weeks ago, Dr. Ryan Sumida mentioned to UH head coach Nick Rolovich that Chansen Ondayog, an 11-year=old Kalakaua Middle School student, was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle to Pop Warner practice.

A week ago, Rolovich visited Chansen at The Queen’s Medical Center. Chansen was named an honorary Rainbow Warrior and invited to practice when he healed.

Two days ago, Dr. Sumida made an unsolicited generous donation to Na Koa, the Warriors’ booster club.

Les Miles out at LSU and his Offensive Coordinator?
June Jones should pack his bags?

  4. H-Man September 25, 2016 11:36 am

Coach Rolovich has done all the right things to get support from the community. Visiting Chansen Ondayog is just another example of his commitment and caring for this community. Right now it hasn’t resulted in an increase in attendance at Aloha Stadium. I guess it is hard for former fans to find their way back to attending home football games. It may take a few more years to rebuild the football culture, but with Rolovich at the helm, it will return.

  5. Bryson September 25, 2016 11:42 am

I love that Rolo is being a man true to his word, when he got hired he told everyone his goal was to make everything better not just in football terms but teaching these young men to do better in society and he’s a living prime example of Living Aloha Play Warrior…

    If Aranda’s defense gave up 4 FG’s instead of 6, LSU would have won, 13 – 12.

  7. Shoko September 25, 2016 12:00 pm

Dave Aranda might be looking for another landing spot, unless the new LSU head coach decides to retain him.

    Mahalo Dr. Sumida.

Best to the Warriors this Saturday. Will wait to see if the coaches have improved.

as I mentioned before there are many ways to make a contribution to UH athletics – can be $$; your time and effort; labor and materials for repairs; volunteering to to simple tasks in/around the athletic complex; and the list goes on! as there are many ways to climb a mountain or eat a french fry.

a simple act of kindness resulted in a “generous donation” by Dr. Sumida as a way to honor Coach Rolo — something from the HEART!

and al and cocobean from yesterday’s post: it’s all in the cards; history is filled with commanders making a strategic retreat and leaving the basic foot soldier to protect the movement — is this abandonment?

one small okole in the seat with a small voice makes a very small contribution to the crowd and noise — unfortunately, the “oriental” mentality of been seen and not heard still weighs heavily at Aloha Stadium for the football team – in some cases, so true in the Stanley.

I can only “wish” that someday the Aloha Stadium crowd will match those of Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida – these standout to places we have been – Colorado, Oregon State, San Diego St, Rice, Washington, Washington St, Sydney Bowl are “muted” compared to the first 4 mentioned above

but, we are lucky, very lucky to have a stadium with “theater style seating” — all the Power 5 schools we have visited have the hard, bench seats!!!!!! YUK!!!!!!!!

and, my observation of Sydney — there are multiple tall buildings built over their freeway system — same could happen with an on campus stadium over H-1 with a large, 3 or 4 multi-level parking lots with each level having a “connecting passage” between the “makai” side to King Street to University Ave — entry from H-1 heading Kokohead and Ewa direct into the parking structure and from University Ave and King Street — only emergency vehicles [ police, ambulance ]; delivery vehicles; and visiting team buses can enter from Dole Street which can be parked below the stadium close to Murakami Stadium and the pool — allow UH Manoa System to operate shops/restaurants around or built into the stadium walls — no more Sodexco — let Kapiolani Community College operate/staff the restaurants { sit down or take out/away like a grill } as part of their Culinary program; and invite COSTCO to provide their hot dog/drink combo and hot turkey sandwiches; Arby’s; McDonald; Burger King to open restaurants that can serve the general student population and the general public who must park in the “makai parking structure” providing an additional source of revenue

this would be my proposal to fund/build the new, on campus stadium.

  11. A-House September 25, 2016 1:36 pm

the “elevated rail system” in Detroit was interesting – basically circles the city with 15 stopping points — a dollar gets you 6 tokens — comes every 10 minutes — computer operated — maybe such a system can be built from Ala Moana/Waikiki to UH Manoa campus — one big happy circle!!

Basketball practice starts on Sept 30. Still no word on the appeal.

That would suck if Aranda is not retained by LSU. His defense did a good job. It’s not his fault the offense couldn’t move the ball and punch in some touchdowns.

  16. Shoko September 25, 2016 3:30 pm

    13. Indeed, the Titan’s were 1.5 point underdogs. Came close to tying the game but came up short, in part, to some untimely penalties.

Vegas Insider shows Warriors as 6.5 point underdogs. I think the sports books forgot to consider the island curse which is 6.5 pounds. This is a pick ’em game!

  17. Shoko September 25, 2016 3:33 pm

    15. I doubt, should Aranda find himself back in the job market, he would have a hard time finding employment. I think he was on a two or three-year contract when he was hired earlier this year.

Dr. Sumida is a long time UH fan and supporter. On Saturdays during football season, everyone in his office wears UH attire.

He’s a good guy, and a good doctor. He’s been taking care of 6 and 9 year old since they were born. Thanks doc.

  19. H-Man September 25, 2016 4:01 pm

We the fans really want to see the athletic programs at the university succeed on the field, in the classroom, as well as financially. So it is with much mahalo and appreciation to Dr. Sumida for his generous donation to No Koa boosters/UH Athletics. This is a feel-good day.

I thought I heard it said when Aranda signed his contract that it was not tied to Miles’ employment. I’m not sure what that means innthe shakeup.

I think it is silly to use the top 5% of college football home crowds as the measuring stick for what makes an acceptable game day experience. We will never have that kind of crowd because very few UH students live on campus, the stadium and the campus are on opposite ends of a metropolitan city with 10 miles between them, there are lots of things to do here that occupy people’s saturdays, and because Honolulu is just much of a diverse place than most of those big college towns. Does that mean that it’s not worth playing college football here? absolutely not! when things are going good and the team is winning, we have one of the best home crowds (if not the best crowd) of anyone outside of the Power 5 (and better than some of those teams as well). I don’t care that the whole crowd doesn’t chant “FIRST DOWN” in unison or that not everyone knows the fight song or cares to sing it or that they don’t stand the whole game and dance a silly choreographed dance at certain points of the game. I feel like if we did that, that we would be doing it just to try to be “like them”. I rather be ourselves, even if it isn’t always “great” by the standards of others. Once the team starts winning again, those loud, spirited fans will be back (and they’ll be doing the wave when we are on offense and all kinds of other dumb things that I’ve come to accept).

I still feel like the biggest reason that attendance is down is that the games are not on regular TV anymore. Those regular TV games were all you had if you were a young person and didn’t belong to a family that weren’t already fans. staying up until 10:30 to watch the delayed broadcast of that night’s game when I was 12 years old is what made me into a life-long Hawaii football fan. But now, you gotta have Oceanic Cable and you gotta pony up a lot of money for PPV (which you don’t have if you are not a working adult) and even with that you have to deal with Oceanic’s poor production. No one on that team can infect a viewer the way Leahey and Blangiardi did back in the day. Who on Oceanic’s football broadcast is gonna say “This is better than Statehood” and make you believe it?

  26. burro sabio September 25, 2016 7:23 pm

Supposedly, Aranda’s employment at LSU isn’t tied to Les Miles’ job.

  27. burro sabio September 25, 2016 7:25 pm

Mr. A-House you have written several times about this stadium over the freeway. I’m going to rain on your parade – how much will this cost to build, to maintain, and most importantly, to insure 🙂

  28. cappie the dog September 25, 2016 7:28 pm

Rick Blangiardi was, by far, the best partner Jim Leahey ever worked with. I remember those telecasts. Totally first-rate.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I miss hearing Leahey’s voice during all the sports.

I sensed some bitterness on Leahey’s part during a men’s basketball game when he asked Tony Sellito if the NAIA still exists. Sellito had made the remark: “I think the last five minutes of the game is the most important,” as a retort to Artie Wilson(I like him) saying that the first five minutes of the second half is the most important. The subtext being: No kidding, as Leahey insulted the ex-coach on-air. Does anybody remember Sellito saying that a player has seven seconds in the key if he keeps moving around?

But hey, the man has a National Championship.

He knows something about the game.

  29. cappie the dog September 25, 2016 7:34 pm

Pet peeve: There is always a parking attendant who makes the motion to turn on the first left after you leave the booth, even though there are cones laid out which would indicate that the road is closed.

I’m not Luke Duke(of The Dukes of Hazzard). I’m not going to run over the cones. I’m always tempted to roll down the window and say, “Yes. I see the cones.”

    I’m getting old.

  30. hossana September 26, 2016 12:15 am

Hey, Shoko #17: you got your odds wrong…initially Titans were underdogs but the line chg. on Wed. to Titans being fav by 1-2 pts. at most sports books….true, they could have tied game at the end but untimely stupid penalties resulted and they lost….Mariota is not helping himself, also, as he still looks terrible as he throws in a tight crowd and unable to throw long balls and turnover still a big problem for him.
People are getting frustrated with MM in Memphis and has said so in their blogs so the honeymoon is starting to wear off with MM. I, like all local people, alwz watch the Titans game but just cringe whenever MM drops back and throws the fb……oh, well, praytell, we all hope he gets better ……some day…..
