BBQ, volleyball and the Amazing Ben Clarke

The weather is hot, the calendar says “July,” and the NCAA allows for a team meal. So the Warriors obliged with a barbecue, sand volleyball and a pool night. The highlight was offensive tackle Ben Clarke’s 360 dive (captured in slo-mo).

Steven, those pictures made me hungry! Looks like a lot of team building going on! That is great! Go You Warriors!

  2. 1 July 21, 2015 6:22 am

    1?

  3. PONO July 21, 2015 6:44 am

Did some business sponsor the BBQ or was that a typical meal?

  4. 3-Prong July 21, 2015 6:44 am

President Lassner on Hawaii News Now interview makes no mention of any type of financial model changes. Made it a point to say that Chancellor hired AD, and that solution will require public (gov’t) and private involvement along with more involvement from the community in coming out to sporting events by purchasing tickets.

  5. 3-Prong July 21, 2015 6:46 am

    Cool Big Boy Pics ST…..

  6. Old School Dave July 21, 2015 7:01 am

Nice pics, Stephen. Thanks. I noticed that there was no white rice on the player’s plates.

Disappointed that Pres Lassner didn’t mention the financial strain that non-revenue Title IX Wahine sports puts on the athletic dept and the need for State money to fund this Federally mandated law. Maybe not a PC thing, but its a fact that it is one of the causes of the deficit.

  7. 3-Prong July 21, 2015 7:47 am

Old Schhool Dave: makes me question Lassners full commitment to a D1 football program and the compliment of women’s sports that come along with it. The fact that he distances himself from the AD by making it a point to say it was the chancellors AD selection. Why does he need to say something everyone already knows.

Mr Lassner, you are the President. step up and give Hawaii YOUR commitment to a full athletics program.

  8. H-Man July 21, 2015 7:54 am

Great pics. And yeah, the guys eating light and no rice. Looks like Ben Clarke watching his waistline with small portions. And Kennedy eating what looks like fish and veggies. Great smiles from Paul Harris, Kennedy, Remy and Dejon. Eperone looks huge and I like his lavalava.

  9. tom July 21, 2015 7:58 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

#4 While President :Lessner is correct as far as the chain of command is concerned i.e. the Chancellor hired the AD and the AD is suppose to carry the ball, it certainly wouldn’t have hurt him to say that the UH Athletics brings in about 36-37M in revenue in indirect spending as pointed out by the UH Business School and deserves support from the Legislature and the public.
While observing the chain of command is all well and good, the President should set the tone for the UH Community.

  10. Maddog50 July 21, 2015 8:20 am

Tom#9 could not agree with you more. President is like Commander-in-Chief, most successful athletic programs have the full support and involvement of the President of the University. After all they are Student/Athletes and some of us turn out to be supporters of the program and the University—-

  11. Da Punchbowl Kid July 21, 2015 9:27 am

Warriors look awesome just eating BBQ. Food looks great too!
That McClam is one big dude. And Ben Clarke is a hella athlete, as his back flip shows. Half the challenge in that dive is controlling your backward spin so you don’t do a back flop.

    GOO WARRIORS!!!

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid July 21, 2015 9:29 am

Must agree, Maddog50, Judge Mui nails it as usual. Mahalo Tom!

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid July 21, 2015 9:43 am

opps… I meant to say GO WARRIORS!!! above.

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid July 21, 2015 9:45 am

and oops in my correction… multi-failing this morning 🙁

  15. A-House July 21, 2015 9:53 am

very disappointing to read about Lassner’s comments about the UH AD

like he and Bjey – both are NOT any fan of mine

Lassner has no idea how athletics supports UH and the State coming from an “academic” background – just shows how tunneled vision he is – looking only at the bushes and little trees in a forest

and, I do hope he is NOT accepting “free” tickets to any UH games – he is not deserving of such a privilege – hell, if we all have to pay, why not him????????????

  16. jimmy the lock July 21, 2015 10:08 am

Any links to the comments Lassner made about the Athletic Department?

  17. ALLAN July 21, 2015 10:36 am

    LassNER DOESN’T GIVE A SHIrT.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 21, 2015 11:03 am

By the way, they were allowed seconds (and thirds) so don’t judge an appetite by a plate’s contents.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 21, 2015 11:04 am

No comments on the 16th picture?

  20. jimmy the lock July 21, 2015 11:08 am

    Blaming Lassner now?

    Just win baby!

  21. jimmy the lock July 21, 2015 11:16 am

16th picture, you mean the orange shirt guy that has a wedgie?

  22. jeezy33 July 21, 2015 11:28 am

Safe to say, Paul Harris likes Watermelon. a lot

  23. jeezy33 July 21, 2015 11:32 am

    19. Hope that’s good news. Physically and athletically, Jackson, Nelson, and Lewis have a chance to be a really solid DB class if all stick it out 4 years. If that happens, I will give Daronte his props.

  24. jimmy the lock July 21, 2015 11:33 am

Or you mean the beer belly guy with the murse and pink and purple shoes?

  25. H-Man July 21, 2015 11:59 am

I think they should have a team lava-lava. Polynesia’s team should be sporting Polynesian attire. Enter the first game’s pre-game warm ups, all wearing the lava-lava. Do the Ha’a, then exit and come back in their uniform.

  26. clyde July 21, 2015 12:23 pm

Re: 16th picture. You mean the guy who was rumored to be leaving the program?

  27. islandman July 21, 2015 12:26 pm

16th picture, Jackson giving a Michelle Wie sign.

They gave the huge players small size plates so the food tastes better ?

  28. st. anthony trojan July 21, 2015 12:32 pm

Second that motion of H- man….cool idea… novel.. n be very entertaining 4 the loyal fans…

Mahalo’s plenty to the ones who cooked the food n prepared…

My opinion on the budget that they get from the legislature….FIRST IN LINE…n off the top should be the “mandated programs” by federal or state… then the budget should be doled out by whatever means they do now…hope sumone from the BOR picks up on that…since the president just don’t want to recognize the women’s sports n the funding 4 it…

  29. SteveM July 21, 2015 12:38 pm

16th pix… with a little more Hawaiian sun, the gesture will grow and spread to both extremes of the hand to make a great shaka. 🙂

    RE: #15
A-House — as you know, a high rank military leader knows how to “lead from behind”– utilize the subordinates he put into place to carry out the mission. Same in business and even universities. I have no doubt the President wants to win the athletic budget war, but needs to be lower profile target to those other UH departments and campuses who have equal claim to the UH funds.

  30. boya_jr July 21, 2015 12:47 pm

Food and team looking good. Go Warriors!

  31. oneseason July 21, 2015 1:01 pm

It isn’t clear to me that Lassner is the problem (or solution). Lassner, with 1-year contracts, appears to be on a short leash held by the BOR. It looks like the BOR got the person they wanted … http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/25447752/exclusive-former-top-uh-official-raises-questions-about-president-search-process

  32. H-Man July 21, 2015 1:31 pm

I just came across the following description of what its like to sit inside “The Shoe.” ” Sitting inside the ‘Shoe during a game is something akin to sticking one’s head in a jet engine. When not hurling F-bombs at frightened Michigan fans or spelling other four-letter words such as O-H-I-O with the rest of the stadium like they’re practicing for a really easy spelling bee, OSU fans can be a loud, intimidating bunch that turn The Horseshoe into one of the loudest stadiums in all the land.”

  33. Old School Dave July 21, 2015 1:59 pm

That food looks good and healthy. Ah, to be young and to be able to eat like that!! They all burn it up quickly and need to get the proper nutrients to recover and stay fueled up.

Looks like there are some football players who can play some VB or at least jump. Is Lance Williams getting blocked by Jahlani Tavai or vice versa?
