Baseball ‘Bows off to good start

Reflection on the ‘Bows’ first two baseball games:

> For the first two games, at least, the starting pitching was impressive. Brendan Hornung struck out nine, matching a career high, in seven innings in the opener. He threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of the 28 batters he faced. Dominic DeMiero, in his UH debut, followed with Saturday’s victory, allowing one earned run in seven innings. Of note, both had command of their out pitches — Hornung’s split-fingered fastball and DeMiero’s slider. Both also benefited from coach Mike Trapasso’s pitching timetable. Because of the unpredictability of the Christmas break, Trapasso set a goal in which the starters would need to be able to throw up to 30 bullpen-session pitches at the start of spring-semester training. Trapasso increased the limit by 15 pitches each outing until the starters reached about 90 pitches in their final pre-season workouts. Hornung and DeMiero were strong in their outings, even when tested in so-called stress situations.

> The theory is a batter is supposed to get better the second time around the lineup. Hornung and DeMiero applied that theory to themselves, adapting to the batters’ tendencies and approaches the second — and third — time through the order. “I tried to learn from my mistakes,” DeMiero said.

> Dylan Thomas relinquished two home runs in a two-inning relief stint, but he threw hard and in the zone. Twenty-six of his 40 pitches were strikes.

> Dylan Vchulek, who is hitting .500 after two games, appears to be the answer at the top of the order.

> Kekai Rios is the a multi-skilled catcher who bats cleanup, and handles a staff whose repertoire ranges from splitters to knuckleballs.

I thought you would still be using your my pillow, since i saw you interviewing the pitcher late at about 10 :15 pm on the tv telecast.
Good write ups on the football team in this morning’s paper.
Rolo clipped off his beard . Ewaliko can place- kick.
” Elijah Dale, a prolific back from 2015 national champion City College of San Francisco, joins as a walk-on.”

    Nice story on UH Basebows.
Maybe they can make some waves in the NCCA.

But Rolo shaved his beard? Oh no, now he will look
    like The Shadow again… 🙁

If he played pitcher and catcher at the same time, he must have been quite fast.
” Theodore Roosevelt “Double Duty” Radcliffe (July 7, 1902 – August 11, 2005 (aged 103)) was a professional baseball player in the Negro leagues. Playing for more than 30 teams, Radcliffe, according to one biographer, had more than 4,000 hits and 400 home runs, won about 500 games and had 4,000 strike-outs. He played as a pitcher and a catcher, became a manager, and in his old age became a popular ambassador for the game, “

Referring to BB and FB coverage. Double Duty pitched one came caught the other in a double header-amazing guy similar to ST!

A long, long time ago, Ferd Borsch covered the Islanders and Ferd Lewis covered the Rainbows. The line used to be: To get the baseball beat, you’d have to kill two Ferds with one stone.

Was nice seeing some timely hitting last night … something missing these past “few” seasons … young team … may have to take in a few games this season

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

Steven, great job in today’s paper covering baseball and football. You are going to be one busy reporter for the next month covering both sports. Remember to pace yourself, take your vitamins and get enough sleep.

Volleyball is less taxing to cover, i think. Don’t have to walk up and down the stairs, like in baseball, etc. ?

I’m still trying to get used to the Freaky Friday switch — Rolo shaves, Trap grows a beard.

But, no question, food tastes better at Murakami Stadium than Aloha Stadium.

Wonder who pitching today. Great pitching so far.

Yes, the food at Les Murakami Stadium is definitely better than Aloha Stadium. I like the chili-hot dog best. Its worth going just for the eats. The game is a bonus, especially if the Bows win. And no-hassle parking and exit to H1 West so easy.

  18. papajoe2 February 19, 2017 3:09 pm

Not football. I”m really happy that the volleybows are wining but some of those teams I’ve never heard of. Does coach Wade get a bonus for amount of victories? Where are the USCs, Stanford, BYU, etc.?

  19. islandman February 19, 2017 5:12 pm

    17. Those teams are coming up in March.

ppj2 – USC is unranked this year. Warriors have road games at BYWho and UCLA. UCLA has been struggling as of late because of injuries. I believe they’ve lost 4 out of their last 5 games, including a 5 setter @ BYU.

Here’s the remaining regular season schedule:
    2/24, 26 – #9 Pepperdine
3/2, 3 – USC (only 1 is counted as counted as conference)
    3/10, 11 – #6 Stanford
    3/17, 18 – @ #3 BYWho
    3/24, 25 – #14 CSUN (Senior Night)
    4/7, 8 – @ #5 UCLA

I’m not sure about the incentives in Wade’s contract, but out-of-conference games count more than conference games in the RPI calculations, which is used in deciding who gets the at-large bids.

Stephen almost had to report a no-hitter today, against the Bows.

    Great Morning All!

    BaseBows seemed to show promise.

    Aloha Coach Yoro!
