UH is back in session today.
The Warriors had a team meeting last night to emphasize academics and training. The Warriors’ offseason conditioning program begins on Jan. 25, and runs to just before spring break.
Spring training opens March 29.

The volleyball Warriors moved up two places, to No. 5, in the AVCA national poll following their sweep in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational. The Warriors did not lose a set in three matches, Charlie Wade called four timeouts (out of a possible 18) in the entire tournament, and freshman opposite Stijn van Tilburg emerged as a star. By the way, Stijn is pronounced Stein, like the mug.
The Warriors depart Wednesday for road matches against Pepperdine.

lots of new offers going out over the past week or so. for those holding out, might not wanna wait too long to commit before we fill the spot with someone that wants to represent hawaii. can’t wait until dead period is over.
Stijn’s hit on set point in game 2 was incredible, it takes a lot of guts for a freshman to make that kind of hit in a tight game with a big block up in front of you. He has no fear.
I see a lot of offers flowing out through twitter, Jeezy what is the update on recruiting? Are we going after better quality players then Chowball? Now we need to see if we can land them.
11. You can’t get any worse than Norm Chows 2015 recruiting class. The coaches hardly did any homework on players and basically just rolled the dice on kids they knew barely anything about hoping to strike gold. But when you’re hoping to get lucky, more times than not you strike out.
We offered a assistant coaches son and his teammate. A linemen that was a giant getting recruited by FCS teams that has no athleticism. Norm needed 3 guys that kick the ball when he had huge needs on the DL and edge rush.
I mean, I have no doubt were upgrading.
I assume Sanchez will be the kicker and the punter unless something else shakes out. Otherwise, if we sign any more kickers or punters this year those players should be a walk-ons. Period. UH has more pressing needs, like DLs, OL, RB, DE, Athletes, etc. and one more QB.
Although Reinhardt is not listed as one of the commitmets, his JC team listed the players that would sign Division I offers and it had Reinhardt choosing Hawaii. Anyway, for what it’s worth that’s what I saw on the internet.

All those recruits listed hold offers from UH? Thought the prior Administration refused to over commit. Doesn’t bother me, as long as the recruit knows there’s a time frame on it and quantities are limited.
I dont think Kapoi or Chow was offered.
What about Colten Goeas? Is he still going to follow thru on his intention to transfer to UH from Kansas? I think he sat out last season so hopefully he will be eligible if he indeed going to come back home.

As recruits commit the excess offers are pulled or become contingent upon last minute turn around/reversal of commitment of the priors.
It is a common practice by all schools and a necessity.

Couple people said UH will not over commit and just offer the exact number of what was available for that year. Makes me sick when I hear someone in the top 10 say UH never offered.

JMHO but would be surprised if STL S Luca Vartic still being actively recruited by UH…….considering that Vartic couldn’t break into the regular playing rotation for the Crusaders…….playing behind underclassmen safeties Jalen Saole ’17, Isaiah Tufaga ’18, and Iosefa Noga ’17…….primarily experiencing only mop-up and special teams duty throughout last season.

Northern Iowa isn’t doing their part in helping Hawaii’s RPI.
They dropped two road games to Southern Illinois and Missouri State.
This is supposed to be our quality win, but RPI-wise, they’re only three slots above us: #97 and #100, respectively.
Despite being only 7-7, Auburn is emerging as Hawaii’s best victory, since their RPI is #80. The eye-test tells me that Northern Iowa is better, however.
Nevertheless, Hawaii is #16 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll.

What I like about this year’s team is that they don’t look like they got up on the wrong side of the bed coming out of the locker room to play the second half.

Again you have no clue about last years recruits. Most of the players from that class did not play a game last season, so too imply that the 2015 recruiting class was failure is just wrong! My son started at Hawaii last January, he came over and started at just under 250 lbs., he was slated to back up Hollis last season, and at the end of summer camp, him and the coaches decided to redshirt him. He left too go back over there now at 275 lbs. He has progressed very well. Don’t judge these player’s too quickly, give them a chane.
Was impressed with OL Frederick Mauigoa (Tafuna HS, American Samoa) from the JPS Paradise Classic final game. Had no problem handling both Billy Masima (Kaimuki HS ’17) and Kaimana Padello (Mililani HS ’16). Hopefully UH OL Eperone Moananu can convince his former Tafuna HS teammate to trip UH this month.
Would’ve liked to see Masima get some reps at RB…….where he figures to be among the top ’17 local HS prospects next year.
Also was impressed with OT Nilsson Gaisoa (Kailua HS ’16)……who more than held his own against DE Viane Moala (Fa’asao Marist HS). JMHO that Gaisoa was more impressive than American Samoa OL prospects Iverson Moana & Edward Manase.
Also was impressed with TJ’s younger brother DT Elijah Taimatuia (Waipahu HS) and ……..as much as UH DL commit Netane Muti (Leilehua HS) and American Samoa DT prospect Leonard Sagapolutele.
Hopefully UH considers offering a walk-on invitation to STL Crusader DE Tanielu Evaimalo. Kinda reminds me of former UH DEs Houston Ala & Beau Yap……as an undersized DE who plays with a non-stop motor.

36. Yah yah, give them time… We’ve been hearing this for years… I’ve been following UH football for 20 years now and followed recruiting extremely close for 15. I’m pretty sure I know what a quality D1 football player looks like.
Should we give the recruits who couldn’t qualify or the recruits that quit and left time too?
Set your standards higher please. If this past season didn’t tell you enough, then can’t help you. I post honest opinions. Not smoke just to be positive.
And ML Warrior, you do realize I said recruiting class right? There are a few good players and some who will be good.. But the class is incomplete.

We signed DJ riggins and his under 500 rushing yards in high school. He’s gone so I don’t mind being honest about him. I’ll leave the rest of the busts to myself.
Kapakahi another couple of kids you need to keep your eye on is 6’3″ 250 Radford soph DL Aaron Faumui younger brother of Ace Faumui and Kailua’s bookend tackle who plays opposite of Gaisoa soph Sione Veikoso 6’6″ 280 OT. Both played very well as first year varsity guys and handled older players all year. Both very athletic and just pups.
Word on Maui, is UH pulled offer to Abe Reinhardt.
#36 Don’t mind Jeezy33 … He’s always negative. I’ve given him past examples of less recruited UH players who developed into NFL veterans … easiest to note are Dan Audick and Rich Miano. Both had 10-year careers in NFL. I know Jeezy wants a Power 5 conference recruiting class … we all would. The reality is that schools in our mid-major level conferences normally get a mix of Power 5 type recruits and a mix of recruits that still need to develop to actualize their potential. The difference between a Boise State and Wyoming is the numbers in that split. We have the potential to be a Boise State program but have a ways to go. Jeezy is just impatient and gets frustrated that we haven’t done better. BTW … I’ve been following UH football for 60 years … including when I was 11 or 12 years old and the UH gave up football totally. So I’ve been around before we were coached by Clark Shauggnessy and was around for the Hawaii victory over Nebraska in Lincoln. So 20 plus years might sound like a lot … but isn’t really.
The best we can hope for is the securing of two-star recruits(if even that) with the hope that our staff can coach ’em up.
With Max Wittek, we got a four-star recruit(albeit beset with injuries) and made him less functional at the quarterback position than Glenn Freitas.
I’m older now, and shouldn’t be criticizing student-athletes, but at the time, I was closer to Freitas’ age, and he drove me crazy.

Are you kidding me, Jeezy is right. We had the WORSE Recruiting class of 2015 behind UAB and they didn’t even play football last year because they cancelled their program. Some of these players had no business being on a D1 roster and that’s the truth.

42…….it’s good to take the long view……but I do think the football program has sunk to unprecedented lows……maybe there was a time before my 25 years that was worse than now…..I don’t know……but I think impatience is the right attitude presently……sure we have a new coach and unless he is a magician things won’t get turned around immediately so we have to cut him a little slack…..but we don’t want to settle into a culture of failure and low expectations…..I give us no excuse for not rising up and being competitive with a program like Boise State……that should be our medium term goal…..we have some good players and some good players in development……but if coach Chow’s recruiting success was measured in baseball terms he would be hitting less than 200 and would have been sent to the minors long ago.
Chow would be hitting below the Mendoza line 🙂
the problem w Chow’s recruiting is there was no time for development. there were too many 1 and done players, whether they quit, transferred or got “medical retirements”. he would also use LOIs on mission kids. every team goes through attrition, but it feels like Chow would go through exceptionally quick.
2012 class – Sai (x2), Long, Andrade, Pierce all medical. Watanabe & that Duke TE left after 1 season. Lavaka & Ursua mission, only Ursua is back now.
2013 class – Miller, Higdon, Bowens, Wiefels, Wily, Kirkwood, Griffin all left within 1 season or so.
2014 class – Patterson, Jackson, Josey, Fairchild, Riggins all gone already. Shawley quit mid season of his sr year. signed Mack Richards mormon mission and hes gonna go elsewhere when he returns.
