A good bye

The upcoming bye week comes at a good time for the Warriors, who will use the break to recruit and regroup.

Instead of returning to Honolulu today, some of the coaches will recruit on the mainland.

Head coach Nick Rolivich is giving the players a couple days off from football activities to catch up on school work — they already have missed 10 school days — and heal from aches.

COMMENTS

  1. Maddog50 September 18, 2016 3:18 am

Aftermath-Coach Rolovich knows a whole lot more about who to play at QB than anybody-he wants to win more than anyone…..so the time was right to see how it might look. I think he and many others were pleased. The defense was without several players that would help the effort. With some time off a renewed and refreshed team and hopefully a healthy roster things will turn around. The defense played extremely hard and yes it has obvious issues but look for some adjustments and improvement. The talent level will improve and yes “we will be great again”. Play Warrior!!!!

  3. Whats Up September 18, 2016 5:31 am

After 1 month of 2016 Hawaii Football, what I learned is that after many years of starting at Hawaii, Woolsey is not a D1 QB.

Sean Schroeder was that last QB at Hawaii that put up points and yards and there hasn’t been one since. If you don’t believe me look back at the last season Sean Schroeder played for Hawaii and see the high scoring games and yardage he put up for Hawaii. The problem was the Hawaii defense gave up more points than Sean Schroder could help produce.

The Hawaii Defense looks confused and is playing pretty vanilla, the offenses are having a field day against such a defense to diagnose. The defense is missing Kennedy Tulimasealii big time but thats no excuse for the secondary to get picked apart and burned.

The players are playing with heart but the coaches are the ones at fault for the dismal performances. The coaches are the ones that put in certain players in certain packages or plays and are the one that put the players in position to make plays. I do not blame the young men for the embarrassing and disastrous play the first 4 games. This is on Rolo and his coaching staff.

But it’s time to bench Woolsey and put in Dru Brown as the starter and have Aaron Zwalhen as the 2nd string back up and Woolsey 3rd string. With the Bye week Rolo has time to give Dru Brown and Aaron Zwalhen some time to work with the 1’s and 2’s. It’s time to think of the future and I think DB and AZ as Hawaii future QB’s Hawaii can beat Nevada at Aloha Stadium.

  4. Ohana Hawaii September 18, 2016 5:32 am

How do you love this? North Dakota State upset Iowa!. It’s brings you back memories? When University of Hawaii had beaten Iowa!. Because they’re having a great offensive coordinator coaches and one in the box calling the play!.

After 1 month of 2016 Hawaii Football, what I learned is that after many years of starting at Hawaii, Woolsey is not a D1 QB.

Did it take you a month or those years to “learn” this?

Think for the rest of us, it only took a few games to realize how lousy this guy is at QB.

    And kept being put in.

The above two reasons are why the rest of us are frustrated.

And see if he had the wherewithal to tell coaches (yes, plural) that he wasn’t doing such a good job. It’s gonna take 0 NFL interest to make him realize his talent level?

  6. Ohana Hawaii September 18, 2016 6:13 am

Whats up you really now what you saying!. But to me Woolsey should had been beach since Michigan game. He should be drop to the third quarterbacks. Brown should start at Arizona and Zwalhen as the back up to him. Because come down to it? Woolsey is the same quarterback he were since Norm Chow was the Head Coach!. He never shown me any to me even the first game against California!. Woolsey would be a great wide receiver, DB or a safety then a quarterback! Look at Nolan Cromwell the former ex- quarterback at Kansas and became a great Pro Defensive back!. Because University of Hawaii football players what they’ve are great! But really seriously much change the quarterback!. Rolovich should really get a Asst. Coach on offensive! So he could called the play to him on the field. Because he should know that? It was easy for him calling the play from the box!. Because he could see the whole field of play!. GOOD LUCK WARRIORS! It’s a new season! Entering the Mountain West Conference!

  7. 808 September 18, 2016 6:32 am

This was an excerpt from a sept 12 article posted by Na Koa Mike from a lunch report by Craig Stutzman:

“We don’t want to make crucial decisions based on feelings” cautioned Stutzman. “Woolsey gives us the best opportunity to win based on video evidence and what we see.” Over the past nine years he has coached at seven colleges and has learned to trust his eyes.”

I just hope after reviewing the video on the Arizona came the coaches trust their eyes and see that maybe just maybe it’s time to start Dru Brown. IW had his chances. Why not start on being great again right now rather than later.

  8. 808 September 18, 2016 6:35 am

    …game…

  9. Arcumfortis September 18, 2016 7:18 am

Dru played well for the most part. If Ikaika was going to “get it” it would have happened by now. Time to play for the future. I can’t imagine getting ready to head to Aloha Stadium for the Nevada game and being excited about watching a game with Ikaika starting. I am sure many others feel the same. Ikaika has been a brave Warrior and has given all he has to give. But it has been short of what is needed to turn us around. So let’s move on. We need this next win badly. It is no surprise we are one and three right now. Any other result would have been wildly optimistic. But if we lose to Nevada this season will start to have a very unpleasant deja vu feeling and any pre-season excitement and goodwill will further slip away (as will attendance). OK we can’t compete well against Michigan or middle of the pack Pac12 teams. But we sure better be able to compete against MW teams or else we will all be looking for something better to do on a Saturday night.

  10. burro sabio September 18, 2016 7:27 am

Why do people drink so early in the morning?

  11. burro sabio September 18, 2016 7:31 am

There’s a difference between DB earning the job and being given the job because IW is not effective. The coaches do have to watch film but DB has done a lot more now to earn the job.

  12. Inyoface September 18, 2016 7:36 am

I won’t watch another game if #11 starts, I can’t take it anymore.

  13. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2016 7:44 am

Jamal Mayo is having a good year.

  14. Markazulu September 18, 2016 7:52 am

I liked the play of our receivers last night. Really liked seeing the slots get targeted more also seeing kala timoteo in the game.

  15. Down with... September 18, 2016 7:53 am

If Dru Brown is not starting next game….I’ll start questioning Rolo as a head coach.

  16. Imua808 September 18, 2016 8:11 am

When Rolo says, Give us more time, Ikaika is my guy he needs more reps, he’s looks the best in practice he sounds like Chow and what Hawaii fans have been hearing for over 4 years.

Also Rolo may want to replace that Boston College graduate with Miano. Our defense looks lost and we may every opposing QB look like a heisman candidate.

  17. 808 September 18, 2016 8:11 am

IW can still play every game. When DB leads the team to a TD, place IW in to be the holder on extra points. Also he can be the holder on FG attempts.

See all is good. He will still have playing time. Just let DB be the starting QB. I think he earned the starting job after the Arizona game.

    No more #11!

  18. Imua808 September 18, 2016 8:13 am

#14 MANY Hawaii fans agree with you. Trust me, this even among the guys giving big bucks to Nakoa

  19. Imua808 September 18, 2016 8:15 am

Aaron Zwalen needs to backup Dru. If not, next season we will have to be patient again

  20. We Are Warriors September 18, 2016 8:20 am

Woosley is not a D1 QB period! I’m tired of watching his play, no accuracy and terrible decision making. Time to get the young guns in DB & AZ and prepare for the future. Let’s go Rolo… get this thing going!

  21. Shoko September 18, 2016 8:40 am

It’s a good time for a bye in preparation for conference play. Two weeks of practice time for any personnel changes should benefit the Warriors when they face the Wolf Pack.

Might want to give most of the practice reps to Brown and give him the start. If he struggles managing the game and moving the ball, then you can always put Woolsey back in.

Too bad mainland folks won’t be able to catch the game. The Nevada might turn out to be something “special”.

  22. wowlaulau September 18, 2016 8:50 am

A lot of drama from people posting this morning. No “silver bullet” fix for the issues this team has. QB play is just one of the many problems and that alone would not have changed the losses.

What is frustrating is the things that the team has control over; execution, limiting mistakes, turnovers and penalties. A lack of talent does not mean that these issues cannot be corrected. Think about how many touchdowns were called back yesterday because of penalties?

  23. Old Diver September 18, 2016 8:55 am

A UH QB controversy is just what the doctored ordered. It won’t hurt the team, it won’t affect their fortunes this year, it won’t change the weak home schedule and it will have no effect on the humid weather. What it could do is marginally renew interest in a team in which many fans have lost interest.

  24. Warrior Fan September 18, 2016 8:58 am

#21 on defense needs to be replaced. He’s been getting burned every week & missing tackles as well.. glad Timoteo got some playing time. I’ll be surprised if Dru Brown isn’t our starting QB against Nevada. But defense, we need to change it up. We can’t keep giving up points, missing tackles & keep starting the same players every week

  25. H-Man September 18, 2016 8:58 am

Going forward, the bye week will allow Rolo and his staff to make adjustments. Besides the quarterback issue, one adjustment I would like to see is Leo Koloamatangi back at center and Tui Eli at right guard. Hoping Dejon Allen’s injury is minor and will be ready for the Nevada game. And besides all the negatives, there were positives to take from the Arizona game – Steven Lakalaka, Marcus Kemp, Dru Brown, Rigo Sanchez, Trayvon Henderson and Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea. ST has already pointed out the stellar play of Jamal Mayo. And the offense put up 24 points !! Did you notice Rich Rodriguez was not too happy on the sidelines when Hawaii was moving the ball and scoring in the second half?

  26. Chicken Grease September 18, 2016 9:03 am

Imua808, would’ve though Nākoa’s influence would’ve been heard by now ESPECIALLY by “the guys giving big bucks.” Time for the sports news guys to get into investigative reporter mode already. Find out why this excuse for a QB has been the starting for a long time now.

Ikaika should negotiate to keep his scholarship (shouldn’t be too difficult for Admin. to accept. I mean he’s a senior already, no?) and resign from the position already. It would look good for when he go look for job, you know? Having done the right thing and all.

Ah. Watch him end up on UH football staff as QB coach. SMH.

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid September 18, 2016 9:16 am

We see signs of hope in last night’s game. The word patience has been emphasized repeatedly since fall camp. I would add the word trust to the discussion. Trust that we have the players to get the job done and the coaches to bring them to it. As I see it, we have some problems, but they are fixable.

All the ingredients are there. I think we will be much better than expected in our conference. Until then, I will be patient and trust that the Warriors and their staff will prove me right.

    Live Aloha ~ Play Warrior.
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  28. Boolakanaka September 18, 2016 9:22 am

Hard to watch at times. Tackling remains an overt problem. Without mentioning names, this is especially glaring in some parts of our secondary.

Now, I’m a realist, Richie Rich is not part of the clique of this current regime, but if one were to wonder–here is a guy that not only has one of the greatest careers NFL careers in terms of longevity, a inspirational walk-on to playing on Sunday’s for over a decade and a proven coach on several levels, he was by the way, one of the surest and hardest tacklers in the entire history of the program. (I hear we are having mighty problems with our tackling??)

Seems to me, if and and when an opportunity presents itself, maybe a conversation/dialogue would be most appropriate and should be opened up–just saying.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid September 18, 2016 9:32 am

Boola – our friend DS and his Oxy team played Pacific up at KSK’s stadium on Saturday. Small college ball right in our backyard! Lots of local players on the Tiger squad.

  33. Casual Observer September 18, 2016 9:50 am

Of course everybody is disappointed in another loss. If the other team has the same expectations and pressure of winning but they have better athletes, then they are the favorites. Still, sports is competition and you still need to play the game on the field. So fans want a competitive game, see players (and coaches) rise up to a challenge and find ways to win a game even if mismatched.

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid September 18, 2016 9:51 am

Yeah – the Boxers I meant to say.

  35. Ponor September 18, 2016 9:52 am

  36. Sangamon Keith September 18, 2016 10:05 am

Problem for coaches is a great practice player who folds under the pressure of real game action. I think Ikaika is one … and what I heard about Wittek, he definitely was another. The coaches need to start evaluating game play instead of practice performance. I don’t quibble with Rolo’s decision to start Ikaika so far … he is the most experienced QB … and Rolo pledged to give every player a fair start. That said, he has to start someone other than Ikaika against Nevada … Brown, Zwahlen or the water boy … I really don’t care.

Unfortunately, that isn’t our biggest problem. Our defense is not coming around. Can someone tell me what the problem is? I saw Cal game … and I thought I saw some potential. I saw Michigan game … and thought, oh well, this is one of the top five teams in the country and we’re exhausted from travel. Now, I don’t know. We beat Colorado last year and tight the year before … and they gave Michigan a run for their money. I expected to see that type of effort against UT-Martin and Arizona. Are they all just big talk or what?

  37. Bogeywarrior September 18, 2016 10:32 am

The defense is beyond bad. Wondering if it’s coaching, too aggressive blitzing schemes, players out of position, bad tackling, bad DLine. Mageo 38 & Packer 21 & Manoa & Choi shouldn’t be starters. Dru Brown should be our QB against Nevada. Play the Freshman DLinemen, Okeke, Santiago, Hicks.

  38. islandman September 18, 2016 10:38 am

    22. … 28 pts. by UH. Rodriquez was so hopping mad at his QB at one point after a short completed pass, hard to understand. Mayo made some good plays, i thought he had some pass breakups , but the stats say none.
Special teams defense was good, allowing only 4 yards average on 3 punt returns and 13 yards average on 2 kickoff returns.

  39. burro sabio September 18, 2016 10:41 am

Maybe if Zwahlen had done more in spring and summer practice, just maybe, he would have been on the field already.

  40. Imua808 September 18, 2016 10:44 am

things are bad when Head coach is referred to as Rolivich

  41. Danzdaman September 18, 2016 10:45 am

I’m bringing ramen, the instant noodle stuff to the next game. Sounds like y’all want that instant turn around season ala June jones. The ones that are saying if IW starts next game I’m not watching, geez, I’ll bring hot water so it’ll be quicker to have instant ramen. Only the third game of the new coaching staff to include offense and defense y’all are questioning them too. Patience danyosan sandufloor, wax on wax off. I’m sure most of you didn’t ask your wife/husband to marry you on your third date.

  42. islandman September 18, 2016 10:47 am

The defense forced Arizona to punt 4 times, an improvement over Michigan game who punted zero times. Also held them to only 13 points in the 2nd half.

  43. A-House September 18, 2016 10:49 am

I, too, agree it’s time for a QB change — something I was wising for before the Cal game

some were glad to see the return of Lempa as the DC – I am now, like before, NOT impressed with his defensive strategy or schemes — he may relate well with the players, as Coach Rolo has said, but, after 4 games, see very little improvement by the defense — the infusion of Sanitago and Fitzpatrick may be the start of revamping the defense — longevity, as in the “union”, has NO place
on a sports team — coaches, step back if you must, to see what’s happening — do not let playing against “better” teams be the reason for not looking at your players, re-evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and teach them how to be better

I will admit, toward the last few minutes of the game with Arizona inside the red zone, something changed with the defense that reminded me of long ago with Jeris White, Hal Stringert, Zumo Lee, and Levi Stanley – the players seemed motivated, played with increased intensity in the 4 x 4 defense — granted Arizona was inside the “red zone”, but for a moment, I had this feeling that has been lost for decades – something inside that burst with defensive pride

hope they can replicate this for all the remaining games!!!

  44. H-Man September 18, 2016 10:49 am

Thank you. Old age showing up.

  45. cocobean September 18, 2016 10:51 am

We’d still be 1-3 no matter who started at QB. Our woeful showing is a combination of the schedule, our overall lack of physical talent and most glaring to me is our overall deficiency in the mental aspects of team sports. The team seems to lack confidence in themselves and the men next to them. As Rolo said the players hope to win not expect to win.

It’ll be a surprise if Brown is not named starter for the next game. It’ll be a big shot in the arm if we can score first or answer any Nevada score. The defense needs something to inspire them to fight harder than they have been. They have to dig deeper into themselves to raise the collective level of play. Being assignment sound and penalty free is something they can control especially with the right motivation.

  46. H-Man September 18, 2016 10:53 am

Since I grumbled about the terrible saimin at the stadium, they took care of that. No concession at upper level south end zone.

  47. Former UH Athlete September 18, 2016 10:53 am

    2. Schroeder had zero OLine protection and was hit on most passes, but still managed to put much better numbers than #11.

If you recall, #11 was a grayshirt, which means one of two things: coaches over committed at that position (Rolo was here in 2011), or non-qualifiers for admissions and need additional classes to get into UH spring semester. Several of Chow’s commits with good potential had to be grayshirted, but eventually never qualified for admissions.

  48. Former UH Athlete September 18, 2016 10:57 am

Given than IW this week in interview said that he now understands that he needs to take care of the ball, and this being his 5th year as a college QB, that’s embarrassing.

It’s up there with Mike Vick admitting that he didn’t know how to read defenses after about 5+ years in the NFL.

  49. Rodney September 18, 2016 11:02 am

Kinda think we need #66 from
OL to play DL with #91,#94
and #97 maybe try one of
    TE come over play DL
Put #3 at LB with#2,#4 and
    #31

  50. Rodney September 18, 2016 11:04 am

    Like someone mention earlier
    KT made #75 and #94 #8
play much better as a unit.

  51. cocobean September 18, 2016 11:05 am

#25. Boola. Richie Rich was a textbook tackler. They could have used him in a video on the fundamental of tackling. He rarely gave up any YAC, he seemed to always end his tackles in the missionary position – the ball carrier on his back and Richie on top.

Richie was a waist and below tackler while another great tackler – Pisa was a knees and below tackler and another great – Brick was a waist and above tackler. They all hit at different parts of the body but they all hit and wrapped up.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Well, da morning after…got the usual “hangover”…not from any intake of alcohol but from watching a team in confusion.
O needs a little more direction and leadership to find their “personality”.
D needs a LOT OF LUV and ATTENTION! I’ve never seen so much players out of position or opponents running through gapping holes or receivers all alone.

Question/s for Coach Rolo…Does the defensive scheme/strategy look ok? Do the players know the system being implemented? Do you think we can improve?
In short…What da heo is going on with our once proud defense?!?!!??
The defensive effort against UTM gave me flashbacks of teams gone by. They were flying around like their hair was on fire.
This past Saturday, it seemed like jet lag or something akin to that.

Dru got the O going and if that is not enough to elevate his standing then I’m not sure what it will take to make position changes on this team.
Change it up….LIVE – PLAY WARRIOR!
Teams has been play with TOO MUCH ALOHA!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  54. z September 18, 2016 11:15 am

Our defense is a huge rebuilding project. Our former coach never had a good defense. We lost players like Gener,Nelson and KT. We need time to develop our younger talent then go out get more.

  56. Former UH Athlete September 18, 2016 11:25 am

    50. Not just a personnel rebuild but also a schematic change from 3-4 base to 4-3.

  57. Boolakanaka September 18, 2016 11:26 am

Coco, as with a great many things, you are correct in that we would still be 1-3 and that Richie Rich was both the IChing and owners manual on tackling. Even before he made it to the starting line-up, I remember him stoning UCLA transfer Danny Lei on consecutive plays in practice. Danny went 235-240 and was a sole who was a load, but each time, Richie made him go backwards. I thought to myself, “damn, this Haole boy from Kaiser is for real and cares nothing about his body…”

I digress, I think the more germane issue is whether have we made improvement during the last four games? That said, we have limited options in terms of personnel and as the late Dennis Green once said, I am sure Coach Rolo has thought this about his current team–“they are who we thought they were!!”

  58. NorthShoreFan September 18, 2016 12:01 pm

    Coach Larry…”physical superiority cancels everythig”…

  59. oneseason September 18, 2016 12:24 pm

I think Coach Rolovich and staff know what they are doing, and are doing it very well. (1) Hawaii has played 3 Power 5 teams and is largely at unscathed by injury. I am not sure, but this seems to me the best health UH has been in at the start of MWC play since the 2011 season. (2) As the most experienced QB, Woolsey is taking on these Power 5 teams in the first half when they are most rested, and showing their playbook. The UH coaches and next generation QB’s get the benefit of seeing how the opposing defense is working and can discuss and scheme at halftime. (3) Rolo is enabling IW to play against some very good schools and have some great experiences to remember after 4 years of playing under significantly sub par QB coaching. … To me, Roach Rolovich’s approach makes sense and has done nothing but improve our chances of success in MWC games.

  60. Willie September 18, 2016 12:25 pm

No doubt whatsoever that Rolo and Stutzman know more about football than anyone of us on the blog. If they feel over a 3.5 year career for IW, that has less than a 50% completion rate and has thrown more interception than touchdowns; gives this 2016 Warrior football team the best chance of winning, then that’s it. Woosley’s most recent QB rating against Arizona yesterday was 21.3. To date his QBR is 28.3, ranking him so far in 2016 at 109 out of 125 college quarterbacks. Yeah, it’s based on stats; but it says statistically he’s not a good QB after 3 weeks of the season.

IMO, if they want to build for the future a change is needed. IW has not done the job to date, is not coming back next year, so what does this mean for the future? Dru Brown and Aaron Zwahelen will both be back if they don’t transfer or get a season or career ending injury. So, what should Rolo and Stutzman do?

  61. Aaron September 18, 2016 12:33 pm

Starting Dru Brown before the bye week would have been foolish. The guy has only been with the team since August. He got a decent amount of reps throughout games 1-4 and he’ll have the bye week to get properly prepared for his first start. All of Rolo’s comments about Ikaika doing well in practice and other things he has said to back him up as the starter has just been “coachspeak” to hold everything together until Brown had enough time to get ready. If Rolo really believed in Woolsey, he wouldn’t have waited so long to name him the starter for the opening game, right? As someone said above, we were probably gonna start 1-3 anyway, so why not bring the guy along slowly? the first 4 games of the season are essentially Dru Brown’s “Spring Ball”. Things will be fine… on offense, anyway.

  62. NorthShoreFan September 18, 2016 12:34 pm

I offered some fraustration tainted opinion about our team but….In Coach Rolo I Trust…

  63. Down with... September 18, 2016 12:43 pm

We need more speed….its not our defensive schemes it’s our lack of speed. We can line up 15 yards deep in prevent and still get toasted. No dline pressure plus lack of speed equals a weak defense. Never mind the schemes.

Sit IW, sit Packer two seniors that should be there for moral support and practice reps but not real game minutes.

I say start ikem, mykal, kalakaua etc true freshman start all over the country. And these guys come from high schools that we need players from. If the only reason you start a player is because they are a senior and they have “leadership skills” then we’re doom. Start players cause they can play or have potential to become great not cause they have leadership skills. We don’t need a game manager we need to win!

  64. Balko September 18, 2016 2:10 pm

The tackling problem is a canary-in-the-coal-mine for this year’s team.

Tackling in college football is a matter of commitment to the team and coaches. Poor tackling is a sign that players have checked out mentally and/or don’t believe in the coaches (i.e., the coaches have lost the respect of some or many of the players).

Remember, by the time players are starting on college teams they have been playing football for almost a decade (or more): they know how to tackle, and practicing it at a college level is a time wasting endeavor.

If poor tackling persists, you’ll know something is wrong within the team that will manifest itself in bigger ways down the line.

    Great 2nd half. Good effort.
    Hope for the future.
But got to avoid deer-in-the-headlights freeze

Its sort of like Florida State in a slow motion defense
against snappy happy high geer offense of Louisville Cardinals.

Can Solomon Matautia play at safety ?

  68. Derek September 18, 2016 2:41 pm

Look at who we played. California lost to San Diego St. 45-40 in San Diego a game they could have won. They beat Texas last night 50-43 who beat Notre Dame. Michigan is ranked #4, so enough said. Arizona lost to BYU by 2 points 18-16, so the teams we lost too were big time schools and that’s no disgrace. We will not play any better teams than those other than San Diego St. and Boise State. We have to beat the other teams which could go either way. The Hawaii defense will have to make more stops and turn the ball over. Our special teams needs to come up with big plays. Our offense needs to show better consistency to finish drives, sometimes they have shown. Other times, turnovers and errant throws are the problem. Priority #1 is doing a better job in stopping the run. Some back ups need to step up to replace existing starters who have not been doing the job well enough. Without naming names, the coaches know who they are. From here on out, we have a fighting chance to win every game and only if the team plays solid. Rest up and get better.

  69. BigFan September 18, 2016 2:50 pm

I think Rolo’s timing is ok regarding the QB position. DB played well this last game but he was so so the last time. It may be time for that change. I thought the Warriors were pretty consistent the second half. Like everyone, I started to watch #21 as he was getting burned and it’s time to give the others a chance. AZ did have some good runners though.

  70. Former UH Athlete September 18, 2016 3:21 pm

Cal and Arizona are likely to be middle of the pack Pac 12 teams. They can put up points so they have a punchers chance vs the upper tier of the Pac 12 but they lack consistency and coaching to be real contenders.

I would take Boise over both Cal and Arizona this year if they played.

No matter how you spin it. UH is giving up 49 points per game. You are not going to win much on this pace. Lempa is going to have to pull a miracle to get the D down to the 30’s ppg during MW play.

GO WARRIORS! Let’s enter the Mountain West with a new team with new fresh minds! Just remember that? Warriors you are pick to finish last this year in Mountain West? Let’s show them all the peoples and writer that? They’re all wrong!. Just all those years and even 2007 and before!. Because 2007 Hawaii was to finish 5th in WAC but never happen!. Chicken Grease and others saying the right things!. But 808 and some of you don’t really understand that it’s really seriously. Coaches will always come out with poor excuse!. Great coaches that come into a new football program. They look at the tapes of the players that played the pass three years!. Louisville beaten Florida State it’s a big deal! Because it can happen in a a Division 1 schools!. What a great upset is a 1 Division 2 college beat a Division 1 like North Dakota State and Iowa! And like a on know conference team like Richmond beating Virginia well known conference (ACC )!. We all have to show up to all the home games!. Up here in Vegas? A lot’s of UNLV players say that? They’re all better team then last year. Because they beaten Jackson State and keplt pasted with UCLA. The news reporters ask a lot’s of players what is the most easily team to beat in the conference? They’re all said? HAWAII! They said that? The coaching staff said that? They’re don’t have to practice until in Hawaii or at home!. Because Hawaii is not a good team and people don’t support the University too! I don’t believe whatever they said! Hawaii is Hawaii and always the best team!

  72. AllG September 18, 2016 3:43 pm

Rolo must start Dru Brown or he will lose the fans. Woosley reminds of too much of the horrid nightmares of the Chow era. We need a fresh start and a fresh QB. Sorry braddah Ikaika nothing personal but I hope you have played your last game, give the others a shot. The defense is beyond fixable this year but the offense has a lot of talent.

  73. torps20022 September 18, 2016 4:00 pm

changing the qb will not helped this team. It is easy to come in the 2nd half and perform well, after the cal, Arizona and Michigan is taking a breather. I feel the offensive coaches are taking too much time to make the adjustments needed with their play calls. I want to see them call the exact same plays they do for both qb’s. receivers and running backs are different for both qb’s. If we are going to open the play book up, do it for both qb’s. Our team is in a path of destruction due the coaching.
say what you want, but I have been a season ticket holder for over 20 years and going to games since 1973, and I can say our “d” is the worst is has been a long time. Once the opposing teams running back or receivers get into the secondary and put on the jets, our db’s have no speed to catch them. The game looks in slow motion.
I am hoping and praying a miracle occurs starting the Nevada game.

  74. Paniolo September 18, 2016 4:31 pm

In another Warrior blog, someone mention that his current quarterbacks are uncomfortable with the spread offense. Huh?? Coach Rolovich being a great Run and shoot offense quarterback, I presume was recruiting spread offense type quarterbacks.
Is this the reason why Coach Rolo will not go with the Run and Shoot because he does not have a quarterback on the roster that can run it.
One person on that blog said, the Run and Shoot is old and is not for today’s football. Huh! I wonder what would Coach June Jones would say to that statement about his Run and Shoot offense.

  75. 808warriorfan September 18, 2016 4:48 pm

#68 … “AllG” … let’s say “Rolo” listens to you and all the others in starting Dru and let’s say Dru fails … what then ?????

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR /DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  76. 3-Prong September 18, 2016 4:49 pm

Ok to state your opinions here gang, but getting a little too personal…..and guess what, the coaches do not look to the blog for personnel change advice.

1-3, that’s where I thought we’d be. On to conference. Go Bows!

  77. H-Man September 18, 2016 4:50 pm

IMO, Rolo’s time with former Nevada HC Chris Ault and current Nevada HC Brian Pollan has changed his offensive philosophy away from the run n’ shoot that June Jones employed. If I got is right, he reportedly has developed a kind of hybrid pistol, read option and spread offense. But right now, its not going to matter a whole lot until he gets the defensive side of the house in order. It may take two more recruiting classes to see the level of results everyone thought would happen rather sooner than later.

  78. z September 18, 2016 4:54 pm

My hope is that more teams will want to play us here.

  80. iceebear September 18, 2016 6:09 pm

I for one have no doubts about DB (really nothing personal towards Woolsey, just the harsh reality), as he is just a much more fundamentally sound and skilled quarterback. DB’s passing shows, vision, timing, zip, touch, and most importantly accuracy.

He is also a good ball handler and runs well when he senses the need and timing to do so, plus has elusiveness in an attempt to make the big play out of nothing (has a little of Joe Theismann in him).

DB also appears to have intangibles like the leadership factor and inspires the whole team (including the defense) to get out of the doldrums and play with some confidence. He may still hit some “bumps in the road” as he gets acclimated to the position, but has much more upside compared to Woolsey and the potential to lead us to some wins.

Also noted that when DB was passing to the same receivers as Woolsey, the receivers seemed to up their fundamentals and effort when catching his passes, as if they had confidence he would get the pass there vs Woolsey.

  81. NotNasti September 18, 2016 6:34 pm

FYI: UT Martin blew out Bacone College yesterday 84 – 6. The second half was shortened to two 10 minute quarters.

  82. Pete Jek September 18, 2016 6:51 pm

The lack of speed on defense is evident. Arizona was playing with the juke button against the defense last night.

  83. al September 18, 2016 6:59 pm

In his last two years at SMU, JJ’s run n shoot had become ineffective to a point where JJ started to lean towards a pistol-like scheme.

  84. islandman September 18, 2016 7:02 pm

To tackle, you have to catch or grab the runner first . In the last game, several times the Arizona runner faked out or ran past the UH defender with the UH player grasping nothing but air. Then other times, UH couldn’t hold onto the runner.

  85. cocobean September 18, 2016 7:31 pm

The defensive assistants have got to step up their game. It’ too late to get players bigger, faster, stronger. It seems they don’t have the full attention of their player groups or the players are not buying into what or how they are teaching. Coach Naeole has all his players on the same page. They have confidence as a group that they’ll perform their role in Rolo’s game plan. I can’t say the same thing for the various defensive position groups.

It’s their job to get their players to improve the basic fundamentals of their position, improve their technique. They have to get their players to better understand their alignments and assignments and how they to fit into Lempa’s overall scheme. I believe these are things the coaches have control over. They have to m0tivate the players to buy into what they are trying to teach. They got to remember it’s mostly about teaching with a very small amount of preaching.

  86. Rodney September 18, 2016 8:17 pm

    This was a winnable game
Rolo why did you not see that we had size advantage on OL
and pound it with Lakalaka and Harris in first half.
Eat some clock and play to
win in 4 th qtr. They had a lot
    of first line players hurt.
    Pistol it.

For those that comment & have season tickets/donate $$ to the program, I applaud your passion and your comments. The rest of you fair weather fans, support the program with your $$ ( donation or season tickets) or keep your negative thoughts off this forum.

  88. Saimin noodle September 18, 2016 9:41 pm

Yes, we all must remain positive. I think Rolo will turn this around.

We are hopeful things will turn around. But, a lot of people are commenting on what they see. This defense is terrible. To say the defense is even average would be a stretching it.

As for watching the games, some go to the stadium and a lot of people watch the games in the comfort of home surrounded by family and friends. It’s less hassle and way more convenient. For me, I am thankful for the option of watching Hawaii football on PPV. As for the away games, radio is sufficient.

    Go Warriors!

  89. Moocher September 18, 2016 10:17 pm

    UH oh…..blog police is here.

Rolo will work it out. Lempa will work it out. The guys, in my opinion, just have zero confidence AS A TEAM that they can win. I would say let the freshman play. Let guys who don’t have the “losing tradition” play. Mix them in with the older guys as best you can. I’d say this might indeed put a spark in everyone’s okole to play and EXPECT TO WIN.

I just think the culture of losing is a big big issue right now.

  90. hitmanhart September 18, 2016 10:21 pm

aloha everyone !! seems like its last year !! all most everyone calling for a qb change .rolo looking like chow on the sidelines !! not happy !!
at this time of the year i was hope to see more qb getting play time !! even ,BEAU REILLY .
coach rolo you made the pre-season feel good for the boys !! time you let the young one play !! and enjoy the game !! and put qb coach up in the box and put your pal on the ground

  91. Duster September 18, 2016 10:36 pm

I don’t believe that a switch to Dru Brown would be a move to have him develop for next season as some seem to indicate. No coach throws in the towel like that. It will be to win now.

  92. 3-Prong September 18, 2016 10:48 pm

Nick on Rolo Show just stated that the bye will give us a great opportunity to reevaluate. Positive comments about DB and about offense trusing him. Change may be in the winds.

  93. SteveM September 18, 2016 11:06 pm

Nearing halftime of the Arizona game, I remarked to my friends that Woolsey doesn’t look too bad…BUT we just don’t score points. Gotta go with the guy that can take the team down the field and into the end zone. Someday, it could be Woolsey, some day it could be someone else. Today, it looks like someone else. I hope we find the “go to” QB to win the MWC.

  94. Maddog50 September 19, 2016 1:51 am

Frustration over the last few years coupled with recent losses lead to this kind of rhetoric. The expected outcome given the state of the current roster was 1-3. Cal and AZ are gonna be in the middle or better of Pac -12. Some personnel changes and tweaks on D will occur and resolve some issues. AZ did not wholesale sub in the 2nd half fact is AZ defense had already exhausted its emotional high. We had chances in the first half on O. So we need some tweaks and also get back the 3 or four defenders who are injured. If we can come out and dominate on both sides for the first quarter or at least exchange blows we are in every game. Mayo is having a good year and the special teams improved drastically. Go Warriors!

  95. Maddog50 September 19, 2016 1:54 am

    Hilorain I applaud your stance!

  96. Postmanke September 19, 2016 6:21 am

Im not too sure why so many thinking we should be winning with this team. We are right where we should be. there is no big expectations here. There is no QB controversy, Dru will be the starting QB next game don’t over think this. Tempo was much better and players will feed off his energy. Watch out for the running game now that we can move the ball with the pass. Long season and we all know what Rolo is working with. miracles not going happen here, just hard work. Keep the momentum and temp going we are good. The defense will come together and show up all they have to do is come together as one unit. Its going to happen.

  97. H-Man September 19, 2016 6:29 am

This is coach Rolovich’s first test to see what he can do. I anxiously await the Nevada game to see what shows up.
