Final push … and pull … and lift …

For the penultimate workout of the intensive offseason conditioning program, the Warriors ran, ran while carrying weights overhead, jumped, and pushed and pulled weighted sleds.

The Warriors will taper next week, performing in testing drills, ahead of the opening of spring training.

The first of 15 spring practice is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 20, although it might be pushed back a few days, maybe starting on the 23rd. Plans are still in the works.

Will Rolo continue with the 6:30 am practices? Occasional afternoon practices easier on parking and traffic.

  2. Da Punchbowl Kid February 9, 2017 11:47 am

    Spring! Can’t wait!

  3. z February 9, 2017 11:56 am

    Is Borden short snapper too?

  4. Stephen Tsai February 9, 2017 12:01 pm

It appears UH will stick with the morning practices.

  5. Stephen Tsai February 9, 2017 12:01 pm

By the way, they fixed the Ching Athletic Complex field lights.

  6. Stephen Tsai February 9, 2017 12:02 pm

    Borden also is the short-snapper.

  7. islandman February 9, 2017 12:46 pm

UH might get the money that used to go to the Pro Bowl. for two years. HTA objects to this possible amendment by the legislature.

  8. Stephen Tsai February 9, 2017 12:53 pm

Marketing and promotions are supposed to be different entities. One is supposed to be about getting people into a stadium, another is about entertaining them when they attend.
I can never figure out which is which.
While I think HTA must do a reasonably good job of getting people to come here — 8 million visitors last year (mostly in Kailua, I think) — they don’t do so well in entertaining them. What is there to do besides hike (and we send out the rescue helicopters every weekend in my neighborhood), swim (but not in Lanikai), or rent a bicycle that the renter doesn’t ride? We need more activities. So, if HTA won’t develop more things for visitors, what the heck, just give the money to UH. Well, until HTA can come up with another equivalent of the Pro Bowl. (And tennis tournaments don’t count.)

On the BC Show this morning, Rolo said that “it is very likely” that Lempa is leaving. He also hinted that the new DC will be promoted from within. If Lempa does leave, that’s a tough one for Rolo. He was the one real “veteran” on the staff. I’m sure Rolo will find a good one though. He has a good coaching staff.

    Afternoon.
Are they closing the upper end zone seats this coming football season? My uncle has season tickets in the red section and was told he needs to relocate due to those seats being closed.

  11. Akamai Okole February 9, 2017 1:59 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Closing sections?!?!?

    …small minds.

    Re: #7
Islandman– I hope so. The only rant that Gov. Shorty had right was that the state could not afford the Pro Bowl. Why? $5 million (from the state piggybank) goes out through HTA. A reported $30 million of sales is generated in Hawaii (mostly in high-end hotel$ but I have no data). The state recovers 4% in taxes (the C&C maybe 10% in hotel taxes but none of their money was paid out to the Prow Bowl). Thus the state recovers $1.2 million in GET, losing a net of $3.8 million.

I speculate that that mainland team visitors to the 6-7 UH home games brings more bodies and spending than 1 pro bowl. Thus, giving UH $3 million a year of HTA funds can actually get the same $$$ result as the Pro Bowl but cost the state piggybank $800,000 less. 🙂

At least the visiting fans can watch a real football game as part of the entertainment.

If the AD has to pay to clean the stadium after a game at considerable cost it only makes sense to shut down sections if crowd does not warrant-

  14. Andrew February 9, 2017 3:42 pm

    13.

True, it’s a little unfortunate though if there’s situations where season ticket holders are told to move and forced to pay more than they can afford.

  15. NorthShoreFan February 9, 2017 3:49 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Afternoon!

Again, open the upper sections for family packages. No alcohol zone. Develop family package tickets. Season and walk up tickets. Lower prices for the family packages. Special vendor prices up there…cheaper soft drinks and snacks. People on the lower levels can walk up to take advantage of lower snack prices…if they can walk. (some so pilute no can walk to good)
Is an okole in the seat better than an empty one?

  16. SteveM February 9, 2017 3:49 pm

    RE: #13
    A self-fulfilling prophesy?
Since Aloha stadium opened, I have sat in every section except the brown level in the end zones. I have my preference of seats–whether it’s shelter from the sun, rain protection, view of the field. Long time season ticket holders have their preferences too–honed over years of attendance and purchase.

If I am told that my season ticket seat locations are now unavailable because UH wants to save a few $ on cleanup, then I would not renew if I could not get what I CONSIDER “better” seats in my price range. I can see a rookie like Ben Jay proposing this, but not Dave Matlin. I hope I’m wrong.

  17. NorthShoreFan February 9, 2017 4:06 pm

So how does one make changes to the seating arrangements, address the so called extra clean up time, satisfy season ticket holders etc…how many season ticket holders in the yellow section?
Thinking only a well reasoned ticket schedule will satisfy those involved.

  18. Andrew February 9, 2017 4:33 pm

    15.

I like your family zone idea where it would be alcohol free. I’m a drinker but not one that drinks out of control. I like to enjoy having a beer when watching football but I definitely can see people that are out of control which ruins the experience for people around them. Having that option for not only families but other people as well sounds like a good idea.

  19. Ipu Man February 9, 2017 4:49 pm

    wait—the customer is king, right?
Why screw the long time ticket holder?
Because the stadium, or the University employees
are too lazy and want everything for themselves?
OK, OK, they are plumb tired by the end of the game,
janitors and executives alike. So, do this: Free endzone
seats to young kids who will clean up the stadium at end of
game, and if they do a good job, fast, then they get a free
Big Mac Meal. Win Win Win 🙂

  20. burro sabio February 9, 2017 7:39 pm

Basic business concepts seem elusive to many, maybe that’s why so many small businesses fail and so many families are in debt. Either increase your income (harder) or cut your expenses (easier). Yeah maybe you should do what your customers want, but maybe that’s why you’re losing money to begin with.

  21. 3-Prong February 9, 2017 9:16 pm

If they decide to displace the top section season ticket holders, they should allow them to select season tickets in the lower section (best available) without charging them the premium contribution for one year. TO keep the seats in subsequent years, premium contributions would apply. Keep these names on record. WHen they open up the top again, these people should get the first chance at them.

  22. $ February 9, 2017 9:23 pm

There will lots of seats to choose from.

  23. Aaron February 9, 2017 10:44 pm

well, they could just raise ticket prices if you don’t like them closing the upper endzones…

  24. oldtimer808 February 9, 2017 10:58 pm

Did Rolo get close to a 100% participation in the off season conditioning program?

  25. jm2375 February 9, 2017 11:12 pm

3-prong – don’t worry, they keep those names on file. I was offered my old seats for MVB when they reopened the upper level at the SSC, but I declined. I enjoy “encouraging” the opposing players and the refs (first row, behind the scorer). IIRC, I was charged the PSC since there were seats in the lower bowl that weren’t subject to the PSC, but wasn’t charged for changing seats.

  26. Coach DB February 9, 2017 11:29 pm

Can we get some new gear? How about some new uniforms? PLEASE, it did wonders for Oregon!!!

  27. boolakanaka February 10, 2017 5:48 am

#26 Coach DB– Seriously, if we can’t get our own Phil Knight, can someone call somebody from the Arakawa’s family for da hookup???!?

  28. oneseason February 10, 2017 6:25 am

I hope UH Athletics is not being pennywise and pound foolish with a seat relocation program. I would think that the stadium clean-up is a cost that gets negotiated with the Stadium Authority, but UH Athletics should at least be able to quantify how much they think they will save by closing off part of the stadium. I agree that forcing season ticket holders to move and pay more is not wise, and probably a good way to boost pay per view sales. Of course, anyone interested in replacing Aloha Stadium with a smaller one would have a vested interest in artificially inflating the clean up costs to keep seats empty and boost the case for their mall/condo/football stadium/hotel business model for the site.

  29. Maddog50 February 10, 2017 7:23 am

I have no idea what the deal is with season tickets-I don’t live there so every other year or so I trek out. I will be attending 4 away games and am just happy to get in stadium regardless of seats. I am of the opinion that whatever happens Dave Marlin has one clear focus-do what’s best for the program overall. Said it before and one more time-I would be gettin my tix now if I could. GoWarriors!!!
