Wednesday checkin: Mitchem, beach money, et al

IVC summer school ended today. Nothing has changed about Mitchem. Still is on track to be here by fall camp Aug. 10. She has provisional admittance to UH, meaning that she still has to attain her AA degree and submit the paperwork.

As for her broken toe and crutches … just a joke between her and friends which went viral.

Spoke with Shoji today about his incoming players. He’s excited about seeing what this class can do but they will have to earn playing time.
Said he didn’t expect any additional walk-ons. With Mitchem the roster is at 16.

Wanted to address the question about what happens to collegiate players who win money during AVP beach events.
There are a couple of ways that players can play and remain eligible.
1. Not take the money.
2. Have the AVP bank the earnings until the player has used up eligibility.
3. Not have winnings exceed expenses. Which I know is what Spieler is doing this summer in California. Expenses include transportation food and Lodging.

To be honest, I didn’t ask Taylor if she took money. Something to ask Thursday when I see her at camp. Don’t know Huddleston’s situation either but she also was playing in California this summer.

Looks like BeachBow Hannah Zalopany broke her arm. Was wearing a cast today.

This looks like a really good team in the making. And this might be Shoji’s tallest team. Should be an exciting season.

Great news that Mitchem is healthy. Too bad for Zalopany but maybe she heals in time for the beach season?

Wow, things have changed and I am old. I remember when Briceno was suspended for playing in that tournament. Had no idea that they could collect $$ at all. I knew they could play in the tournaments but thought they had no choice but to relinquish the $$.

Hey Cindy….do you know if Avery Poppinga is on Dave’s radar? I know he can’t mention specific names, but figure you may know if Karrie and Brian’s daughter is D1 level and if Dave is looking at her? She obviously has the genes and seen her a couple times play. Pretty decent passer and good speed. Can bomb every now and then too.

    3. she is on the radar but may end up staying closer to home … like Texas. Good player, athletic.

The ‘legacy ‘ (as they call it) that they are more serious about is the daughter of former UH basketball player Fabio Ribeiro who just won the USAV Beach Championships in Florida. Apparently she’s been offered (think 2017 beach season) but she’s still undecided.

I had a feeling Texas would be in the mix, especially since Elliot and Brian are good friends as well. I hope she is strongly considering UH, I think she will be a good one. Texas has enough, plus it would be great to see 2 of Hawaii’s all time favorite middle blockers of all time in both Brian and Karrie, return to watch their daughter play for their alma mater. They were, and still are, 2 of my all time favorite UH players. Both are suuuuuuper nice as well. Would really be great to see them in Hawaii again!

What do you mean by legacy? Are you referring being a child of an alumnae?

Fabio’s daughter just for beach team if she chooses us?

    5. Brian and Jerritt are very close going back to their playing days at UH. They might have even been roommates for a year. Karrie was in the mix for UT assistant before they hired Salima but she didn’t want the job because it would take too much time away from her two young daughters.

They are great people. one of the more interesting weddings I’ve ever been to.

yes, legacy is a child of a former athletes, either an alumna or alumnus.

and yes if you read the Ribeiro reference it says beach 2017. She’s 5-9, not sure how much taller she might get.
