As mentioned at the end of the thread last night, 4 Wahine leaving tonight for the OTC in Colorado Springs. Knew only of Kahakai and Iosia.
when asking Kahakai how she felt about it, she’s the one who mentioned Mitchem and Granato going.

Will have more on them later. They’ve arranged an interview session with them at 2 p.m.

couple of things from previous thread
you can vote until 1159 p.m. EST Thursday (that’s 659 p.m. HST) for Off The Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month. Finalists Stijn van Tilburg and Jennings Franciskovic are 2-3 in voting. You can vote every hour.

someone asked about Ma’afala. She could not play yesterday because it would have burned a season of eligibility. just how the rules work. Sort of like what is happening with Tuileta. They are saying that because he played in fall friendlies for USC that he used up a year of eligibility. UH likely will appeal that.

here’s the link to UH’s release on USAV tryouts
interviews later today at 2 pm.

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2017/3/1/womens-volleyball-four-rainbow-wahine-invited-to-usa-volleyball-national-team-tryouts.aspx

The tryout are for the national team and three additional Collegiate National Team opportunities. Separate groups of 12 players each will be selected for summer trips to Europe and Thailand for training and matches, while a projected 36 additional athletes will be invited to Minneapolis in June for a program that includes competing at the USA Girls’ Junior National Championships. Selections will be announced by the end of March.

All sessions of the tryout can be watched on the USA Volleyball livestream

Good luck to the four Wahine at the USAV tryouts. I feel it’s an honor just to be selected to this elite group of hopefuls.

  4. Kazu March 1, 2017 1:25 pm

Burns will have a lot of competition this year with the Freshman class coming in. I know its only preseason and not much practice time but I hope she can pick up her game.

  5. Cindy Luis March 1, 2017 5:19 pm

Hall said that Nikki Taylor was invited but opted to stay with beach.
Someone yesterday said that perhaps the reason the Iosia wasn’t traveling with beach was because she was going to the tryouts. Silberstein had told me that she was on the bubble for the travel roster. Hall said the same thing, adding that she was really close to being in the mix for the competition pairs.

  6. Hot March 1, 2017 5:53 pm

Has there been a rule change regarding spring competition and redshirting? I know Fotu, Carlson and Woolford, all who redshirted in 2003, played in the 2004 spring match vs. Nittaidai. Same thing with Keefe and Thomas playing in 2005 spring, IIRC.

  7. Hot March 1, 2017 6:00 pm

    3. I don’t think “Invited” is the right word. From what I know, it’s an open tryout and anyone who can pay the fees can try out. Kristina Kam, who never saw any significant playing time at UH, has participated in this tryout previously.

  8. blunite March 1, 2017 6:21 pm

Nikki’s decision is understandable. If she had a good chance at making the National Team, it might have been worth a shot. As it is, making the team as an Opposite is tough due to the abundance of talent at that spot. Moreover, since the same coaches will probably be making the calls Nikki is already a known entity. (As in they are not likely to change their minds.)

One slim opportunity can arise if Karch allows jump serving (Nikki’s forte), but odds are he will not. (He has little faith in the consistency of jump servers.)

  9. Rabbit ears March 1, 2017 7:38 pm

Did the 4 wahines have to pay their own way to Colorado Springs?

  10. ALLAN March 1, 2017 11:19 pm

    GO HAWAII!

  11. warriorwahine March 2, 2017 2:12 am

    43 on previous thread.

kahakai didnt simply chose side ‘because thats what is normally done’, i was right there close enough to watch and hear it right in front of me.

why would you want to be on serve-receive to start a set let alone set 5? do the serve and attack, maybe get some service ace in.

  12. tako March 2, 2017 5:24 am

Great Wahine article in this morning’s paper! Thank you Cindy…

  13. Ron March 2, 2017 6:30 am

Almost a whole page of interesting info. You have been busy!!!! And now USC is in town for 2 important matches. No rest for the golden pen.

  14. WahineFan10 March 2, 2017 9:21 am

Is it too late to add Colorado on to next season’s WVB schedule? Would the Wahine be able to make a trip to Boulder, mid-week between BW conference matches?

The Buffs will be great next season.

  15. Cindy Luis March 2, 2017 9:25 am

    6. it was what I was told about Ma’afala.
    7. invited is the correct word when it comes to Taylor. There are several ways players end up at the Open tryout. Some are recommended by their coaches, some are invited by USAV, others as you mention like Kam register on their own.
    9. don’t know. something I will check on.
    11. I was right there as well, including seeing Kahakai smile and nod her head to the right to indicate she’d take “side” Not sure what you mean by seeing and hearing something other than she called side.

Coaches traditionally prefer being on serve-receive. sure, there are chances of an ace but odds are higher that there won’t be and it gives a team the first opportunity to attack.

12-13. had a third story on beach team leaving but they held it for Friday due to lack of space. It has been a busy two weeks especially. thanks for reading.

  16. Cindy Luis March 2, 2017 9:28 am

    14. their schedule isn’t set yet so don’t know if they have any breaks. But it has been rare that they’ve been on the mainland out of conference.

  17. WahineFan10 March 2, 2017 9:45 am

Is BYU still on said schedule, still?

  18. blunite March 2, 2017 10:36 am

RE: 2017 NIVC (National Invitational Volleyball Championship, D-I)
    http://volleyballmag.com/nivc/

Cindy, do you have any info on the NIVC, and if UH would go if invited? (Equivalent to the NIT in basketball.) The tournament is AVCA sanctioned and being revived in 2017 with teams not selected by the NCAA Tourney (total of 64). It occurs sometime between Nov and Dec.

  19. mauna March 2, 2017 10:48 am

Heard from Jeff Hall that Robyn would be here in 4 weeks. That’s a week after the Kansas scrimmage and during Spring break week.

  20. setaone March 2, 2017 11:37 am

A flight to Colorado from Vegas isn’t bad. Maybe Robyn will meet with the players at the tryout this weekend?

  21. mistakol March 2, 2017 12:09 pm

Taylor went to the OTC last year and made the USA Pan Am Team so that should qualify her to try out for the USA National Team. Nicole Fawcett, Curtsy Jackson, Alexis Crimes sometimes are sent to the A1 team but also play on the National Team. If you read the USAV website, they only write articles about the National Team players playing overseas. They have articles on Michelle Bartsch and Micha Hancock but they were A1 Team, maybe they were on the National Team but hardly play.

  22. Andrew March 2, 2017 1:26 pm

    18.

I think UH is a program that’s above the vball version of the NIT. It really wouldn’t benefit UH in any way. If they were to win, sure great but it would more than likely be against sub par opponents. Big programs are not going to participate in something like that because it can do more harm than good.

  23. WahineFan10 March 2, 2017 2:44 pm

    22.

    I disagree, no offense intended.

UH anymore can’t afford to not get as many high-profile type games under their collective belt. Win the darn thing I say if not invited to the NCAAs.

*The one winning NIVC team, imo won’t be the only substantive team there. My guess is that its finals will be a true NC2A 2nd round type match up. It’s all, w/o saying, speculative of course.

  24. WahineFan10 March 2, 2017 2:48 pm

I’d think that UH always wants to remain in the AVCA Top 25, further.

  25. Andrew March 2, 2017 2:57 pm

    24

What makes you think the winner of the NIVC will even be a top 25 team? All teams going into the tournament will ALL be unranked as is since they did not qualify for the NCAAs. Opponents for that tournament will not be very high profile whatsoever since attendees will all be sub par mid majors or lower tier power 5 schools (if they even want to go).

If UH wants to remain a major program in volleyball, aspiring to win the NIVC when they do not qualify for the NCAAs is not the way to go. It’s a lose lose situation. Winning is just like “okay great, you should have won, look who you’re playing. If they lose then it makes the season that much more disappointing.

  26. WahineFan10 March 2, 2017 3:05 pm

It’s the difference between being reactive and proactive.

When it did exist earlier (early 90’s), teams which are now atop the B1G and national landscape were not to proud to be participants.

    &How about polled “RV” lol.

Btw, how many statistics courses did Ah Mow take at MHS and at UH? She going to be able to navigate through all that math, re: RPI?

  27. Ron March 2, 2017 3:43 pm

All she would need to do is read the blog. Maverick gives a tutorial on RPI that even I understand it most of the time.

  28. WahineFan10 March 2, 2017 3:50 pm

Ron, ur too funny. I hope that mainland teams, UCLA always, prayerfully, will continue to come to Oahu despite Shoji’s retirement.

  29. Maverick March 2, 2017 4:43 pm

I think each of the 270 or so Div I teams that don’t make the NCAA tournament should each receive a participation trophy.

  30. warriorfan March 2, 2017 4:57 pm

Wahine program is too prestigious to settle for some second tier post season tournament, no thank you.

  31. Maverick March 2, 2017 5:09 pm

One year, UH was invited to participate in the lesser post-season volleyball tournament (UH didn’t qualify for the NCAAs) but declined to maintain the program’s status. And the NCAAs had only 32 teams back then.

Not clear what the benefit would be (like being crowned “the tallest midget” of a tournament that’s as significant as a pimple on a fly’s butt) and not clear what the cost would be (for example, some of the lesser NCA men’s basketball post-season tourneys are pay-to-play). Given the budget constraints, paying to play in such a tourney would be financially irresponsible.

If UH wants to be top 10 (not merely top 25) team, RAMS must hire a strong recruiter and make more of an effort to land international players, many of whom don’t have a “stay close to home” desire.

  32. blunite March 2, 2017 5:24 pm

    RE: #31 Maverick

On that note, RAMS may wish to touch base with our former Serbian alumnae (aka the European trip the team took). Having a few foreign players who are national team members (for their respective countries) may be better than many Fab 50 recruits (due to the experience factor). It may also offer professional opportunities for players like Nikki Taylor.

  33. Maverick March 2, 2017 5:27 pm

    32. Agreed

  34. Hot March 2, 2017 6:27 pm

    15. I was referring to the UH article that you linked to and one of the comments, not Taylor. I doubt all four players in the article were “invited.”

  35. Cindy Luis March 2, 2017 6:47 pm

    http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=42115

    new thread up for Thursday

    31. as Maverick said, UH declined in 1992, the only year the Wahine didn’t make the NCAA.
