    Wahine should periscope too

Annie Mitchem did awesome at the tryouts. She was in the elite 18-member wave on the final day, just like Nikki Taylor last year:

    http://www.teamusa.org/usa-volleyball/usa-teams/indoor-volleyball/women/national-team-tryouts/wave-schedule

I am guessing Iosia was in the second-rated wave, with Granato and Kahakai in the third (based on who else was in those waves). I’ll send the pictures link in the next post.

  3. warriorfan March 6, 2017 1:45 pm

Good for Annie, hope she gets selected for the Pan AM team. And Iosia, she will get there when she’s an upperclassmen IMO.

  4. Maverick March 6, 2017 1:45 pm

This is the link to photos of the tryouts posted to Facebook:

Annie is #61 in blue, and there are several pics of her with the elite wave. There are a couple of pics of her hitting on a step out, and she looks really fit. In one pic of the elite wave with Karch Kiraly, Annie is in the back of the group (as if she was hiding, lol). Hope she makes one of the national teams.

  5. warriorfan March 6, 2017 1:45 pm

    1. Agreed or at least live stats? Doesn’t the big west have a rule you have to live stream every match?

  6. Maverick March 6, 2017 1:47 pm

Here is the pic of the elite wave with Karch, and Annie is at upper left, behind #46:

  7. Maverick March 6, 2017 1:50 pm

    5. Isn’t that rule for conference matches only?

  8. Maverick March 6, 2017 1:58 pm

UH beach team remains #5: USC, FSU, Pepperdine, UCLA and then UH.

UCLA lost to USC and Pepperdine, while Pepperdine lost to USC. UH didn’t move up because those are quality losses to top 4 teams, while UH had wins against previous #6 and #12.

  9. Cindy Luis March 6, 2017 2:45 pm

    5. big west rule is for indoor. beach is another issue. some problems created when there’s electricity problems at non-campus sites, beaches such as Zuma and Waikiki.

  10. WahineFan10 March 6, 2017 3:01 pm

Granato and Kahakai should return to Manao and use this experience as the impetus for breakout seasons this next 2017. Prove folks wrong in their evaluations.
*Partner up w the weights, jog Diamond Head, hit the beach on their own time for pick-up matches.

Tell me why again Mitchem was moved from MB to OH, lol, in 2016?! I seriously can’t remember the anecdotal answer given by quite a number. I’m not a liar, also. haha

  11. WahineFan10 March 6, 2017 3:02 pm

Wish that there was a ‘like’ button for #10. Nice!!!

  12. Maverick March 6, 2017 3:13 pm

    11. Because UH didn’t have a reliable hitting OH on the left, particularly against bigger blocks, UH needed someone to shore up that position. With UH’s passing problems, the middles weren’t getting as many attempts as the team would like, and given Annie’s height and power, Annie would get more attempts on the outside and hit for a higher percentage than Granato and Sibley (also remember that Greeley couldn’t hit from the front row due to her recovery from shoulder surgery). Plus UH had Maglio and Burns to handle the middle, which at a minimum provided a good block and decent scoring when available. Basically, Annie was able to score more points for UH on the outside than in the middle, making her more valuable to the team as an OH.

  13. jm2375 March 6, 2017 3:22 pm

MVB questions (that I’m too lazy to go looking for):
    – when was the last time UH won in Provo? (Josh Walker said he never won there in his career)
    – when and where are the BYU-LBSU regular season matches?
(If UH wins out, including at BYU, LBSU losing to BYU may be the only way UH moves up in the conference standings)

  14. WahineFan10 March 6, 2017 3:23 pm

No disrespect to Shoji, right up front. It is what is and was.
    Anyway.
Taylor and GG @ OH1, Granato and Clare-Marie @2 (should DSs have been needed)
Stationary-Blocker-Burns @ OPP and Ross(who as I understood it, could hit moreover) / Castillo and Smith (should a DS have been needed)

  15. WahineFan10 March 6, 2017 3:28 pm

Thanks #11 for the info. You were one of those who realized Mitchem, the next Krystal Atwood/Jessica Sudduth on the OH position, lol.

Also, UH MVB should take 3 of 4 matches against BYU and/or UCLA traveling wise.

    RE: WNT Tryouts

IMHO Iosia would have shined if she fast set the ball like she did in high school and against Wisconsin. Coach converted her to high ball sets during the season but, the National Team goes fast when given the opportunity.

In fairness to Granato and Kahakai, Karch probably did not have them on his radar (which means he did not bother to look at them at the tryouts). With limited time and him being the only Head Coach on the “Tryout Coaching Staff” focus is on those “elites” he has tracked throughout the year. Although, height may be the only attribute that automatically draws his attention, and Annie (between 6’3″ and 6’4″) fits the bill.

    RE: Sandbows

I’d consider moving Kan/Homayun up a flight. You can’t teach smarts and this pair has their share. Recall that Katie Spieler (5’5″) and Misty May (5’9″) both played at the highest level.

  17. haleiwacrossfitter March 6, 2017 9:36 pm

I’m having Laura/Steve backflashes on a certain new poster to this blog lately. Not naming the current blogger. Anyone know who I might be talking about?

  18. Warriorfan March 6, 2017 10:34 pm

I am surprised Taylor/Schucht or Weaver/Maglio didn’t get pairs of the week, only UH pairs to not lose any sets this past weekend and were both pretty dominant.

  19. Ron March 7, 2017 6:23 am

    #19 Yes, me to.

  20. Rabbit ears March 7, 2017 6:57 am

20- I think it was just a opportunity to give it to another pair. Maglio and Nikki have a lot in their closet already.

  21. jm2375 March 7, 2017 9:59 am

Come down to the SSC Friday and Saturday and watch some very entertaining volleyball!!! Let’s lead the nation in attendance!

2017 home attendance averages through March 2
    1. BYU — 3,243
    2. Hawai’i — 3,187
    (from offtheblockblog.com)

  22. WaWa March 7, 2017 9:59 am

    19. YEP! I hate reading through those garbage, circle-talking, scatter-brained posts.

Nikki Taylor does not have the skill set to be a 6-ro OH. Comparing Mitchem to Sudduth is a jump-float slap to the face. Sudduth was a great player in her own right, but Mitchem has athleticism on another level. Unfortunately her time with UH was abbreviated. She will peak post-college. I was happy to hear that she was in the elite grouping. Mitchem is one of my favorite Wahine in a while.

  23. WahineFan10 March 7, 2017 12:10 pm

Greeley’s old coach is the new UHH coach, replacing Tino Reyes.
The gal from Austin doesn’t appear to be returning, lol, for the Vulcans.

Evelin Solyomvari had redshirted last 2016. Her LinkedIn account says she’s graduating from Hilo in 2019.

How serendipitous for this Gene fellah. 😉

  24. WahineFan10 March 7, 2017 12:15 pm

It would also appear as though the Vulcans have two very solid recruits on their way to Hilo to boot.

  25. haleiwacrossfitter March 7, 2017 8:24 pm

    Hi Cindy

Wondering when you’ll be blocking the new Steve\Laura? Getting a little out of control.

  26. WahineFan10 March 8, 2017 8:06 am

Hannah Rooks. Hope that there is no unusual thing, such the stand-off.

I’m hoping that she could still make it indoors, next 2017, for a 5th year of playing VB. I’d love to see what she can do *hitting* at one of the pins.

  27. Ron March 8, 2017 10:33 am

I hate to admit it but also thought Hannah could help the indoor “Bows” on the left. Actually, there are several beach players who I think could help but I don’t know if they are even eligible to try.

  28. Cindy Luis March 8, 2017 11:33 am

    26. nothing said that warrants it yet.
not seeing Steve/Laura but reminds me of some who are quite in the spam filter
can tell you honestly that there have been several posts in Russian.

    28. Rooks didn’t want to play indoor. and, as you surmise, not all beach players are eligible to play indoors.
Rooks was still suspended as of last week. will be at beach later today.

USAV won’t be announcing teams until later this month

  29. blunite March 8, 2017 2:34 pm

Seems the USAV selected players are notified prior to the public announcement (according to the website – “early” March sometime). Mitchem has an outside shot for the Pan Am or Collegiate. Although, Inky Ajanaku of Stanford tops a bunch of AA MBs. (Note: 22 Feb tryout was even more loaded.)

  30. Cindy Luis March 8, 2017 4:02 pm

    30. spoke with Mitchem. she said she was glad she was used at MB, didn’t think she had a shot if she had stayed OH

    26. one last thing. I don’t have the ability to block people. I have to ask our web people to do so. also have to show cause.

  31. Hot March 9, 2017 3:08 am

    18. It’s not Steve/Laura. It’s that other guy who was nasty to Cindy a few years ago and who stalked Ashley Kastl. Also uses a million usernames on VT spouting the same nonsensical gibberish.

  32. Cindy Luis March 9, 2017 5:07 pm

    http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=42224
    new thread up

    32. don’t think it’s that person from a few years ago Since I don’t go on VT that much, haven’t paid much attention.
