Taylor POY, Shoji COY, RPI 23, poll 12

Hawaii’s RPI up to 23, which makes the placement in the bracket even more baffling. Whatever.

    Just do it!
    Beat USC!
    Puka da Trojans!
    Let’s Go Bows!
    Go Wahine!

No question they got hosed. I like their matchup with USC but even if they were to get by USC, I really think Minnesota will be a tough obstacle to overcome especially at their place. I do think Hawaii won’t have to be as reliant on Taylor as they were last year or even earlier this year so that will definitely help when USC and Minnesota have to decide who they are going to key their defense on. UH is not getting much respect from ESPN either. On their article today they talked about Minnesota’s road to the final four and they only mention their obstacle being a potential matchup with North Carolina..

  3. H-Man November 28, 2016 9:06 am

It was an awful placement, but getting USC at a neutral site is such an opportunity. Minnesota … worry about them after beating USC.

wow, hawaii finished the regular season at 23 in the RPI !!… that means they could’ve been in the conversation for a seed. if only they had some wins against the top 25 RPI. oh well. if they had those wins, their RPI would’ve been even higher, and a surer bet for a seed. que sera sra ….

i agree, the final regular season RPI just emphasizes the screw job the committee did, not just to hawaii, but to that entire minneapolis subregional. and i’m not usually one to lay into the committee this time of year …

when it got down to the end of the selection show, and hawaii hadn’t been announced yet, i thought for sure we were going to the missouri (#15 seed) subregional, or even to ucla (#10) or north carolina (#7). but to find out hawaii was going to #2 seed minnesota?!? wtf!?!

hawaii’s RPI last week was #28. sounds like the committee didn’t look at the updated RPI much and went by last week’s instead. pure laziness, imho…

that said, time for hawaii to focus. usc in the first round will be tough. they just took ucla to 5 sets in their last match of the regular season. can’t look past them.

and if hawaii moves on, then minnesota on their home court will be a big challenge. minnesota is playing extremely well right now. they just expended a ton of mental/emotional energy in two 5-setters this past weekend (against nebraska and wisconsin) … still though, they closed the regular season playing at a very high level.

tough road … on the road … go bows!

  7. Cubicle1126 November 28, 2016 9:43 am

congrats to Taylor and Shoji on player and coach of the year honors, respectively!!

and congrats to Iosia, Kahakai, Maglio, and Mitchem on also making the first team with Taylor … and Iosia for earning all-freshman team honors!!

  8. T103 November 28, 2016 9:44 am

@Cindy I think you meant POY (player of year) not POW above. Anyway, this gets frustrating year after year how NCAA treats Hawaii. I feel like I just wanna somehow meet the committee in some room and just share with them some ‘words’. If they saying travel is important for costs, which it is, how the heck are we flying all the way east instead of closer? It’s like being picked last for a game of dodgeball and only being able to play cuz we own the ball. I just trip out. But we just gotta do us, do what we gotta do, and hopefully play the best tournament of our lives! Hope this stirs up something in the girls to just turn on beast mode! Go Bows!

Wahine up one spot to 12 in the coaches poll.

While it looks to be a disadvantage based how the Wahines were seated in the Minnesota sub-regionals, let’s accentuate the positive and view this opportunity as a final-four matchup. Who ever survives would appear to be in the driver’s seat for the nation championship. Go Bows!

Saw the video of Dave and Nikki in response to the selection. Really liked their demeanor and focus – very professional and mature. The other thing that have been special this year is how Dave is now using our coaching staff. In 35+ years, I have never seen Dave share the coaching duties as much as he has this year. There is now greater coaching input from multi-sources. While Dave has the final say, he clearly has also empower the coaches. He even huddles with his staff during timeout to get input – so unlike Dave of years past. With so many sets of eyes, the staff seems to be making real time adjustments quicker than ever before – a very good thing.

    6. Perhaps. if they had been healthy, who knows what could have been
    8. thanks
best quote of the day from my chat with North Dakota coach.
IT’s the Mount Rushmore of volleyball. Shoji, Haley, McCutcheon and some guy named Pryor.

Spoke with Haley as well. not quite as quotable as his Occupy NCAA but he is not happy with how the NCAA continues to treat the sport, said it’s gone back to the 1980s with too many people making decision that are too young to remember how it used to be.

  13. tongo November 28, 2016 10:05 am

Congrats to Nikki, Mitchem, Maglio, Kahakai, and Iosia. Thought FOY could have gone to Norene since Ruddins is red-shirt freshman. Am surprised about Gaucho libero Emilia Petrachi not even being recognized!

  14. Andrew November 28, 2016 10:17 am

You can also look at this in the point of view of Minnesota’s coach. I’m sure they not exactly thrilled to possibly see UH or USC in the 2nd round especially being a 2nd overall seed. I bet they expected an easier sub regional.

  15. haka November 28, 2016 10:22 am

Congrats to the first team Bows!
    Extra special congrats to Vannah!
Her recognition by the coaches should quiet her clueless critics.

  16. noblesol November 28, 2016 10:38 am

No love lost between North Dakota and the NCAA either. They used to be the ‘Fighting Sioux’ out of huge respect for the historical fighting ability and warrior tenacity of the regional Sioux tribes, but the NCAA PC movement run amuck forced the school to change the name of its teams, hence the neutered “Fighting Hawks”. The school and its major contributing alumni fought the change for years, and a large majority of the local tribes had no issue with ‘Fighting Sioux’.

Also, no love lost between the Hawks and Gophers. The school carries a large chip on its shoulder when it comes to playing against U of M. In hockey, they love to beat on the Gophers. If volleyball were a contact sport, the Gopher girls would have much to fear from the Hawks. The Hawks might still lose, but they’d leave marks.

  17. Cindy Luis November 28, 2016 10:38 am

    15. it will be interesting.
North Dakota played at Minnesota in Sept. went 4. tied 1-1 at the break. Their coach says if that happens on Friday, there will be pressure, and it won’t be in the visiting locker room.

    gotta run. be back later.

  18. H-Man November 28, 2016 11:17 am

I like Andrew’s comment #14. The Minnesota coach cannot be happy with either USC or Hawaii in the second round. No patsy for his team. From my POV. I see the Wahine’s seeding as simply opportunity.

  19. Andrew November 28, 2016 11:22 am

    18
Opportunity indeed. Its by far the strongest sub regional in the tournament

  20. Andy November 28, 2016 11:30 am

Ha! Just saw the video of the Wahine bracket reveal. About what I expected – disbelief followed by laughter and resignation. Go Bows!

  21. Bleachercoach November 28, 2016 12:09 pm

Wow how ironic is this: Lindsey Berg is on a 1 year contract and she gets to go back to her Alma Mater and coach against her coach…She should provide some great insights of the gym, crowd, and style of play to our team…Also, Elise Ruddins, a senior MB for USC is the older sister of Freshman of tbe Year for the BW, Lindsey Ruddins of UCSB…I am sure Lindsey will give her sister some scouting reports and Hawaii’s tendencies
This is the toughest 1st/2nd rounds ever for Hawaii…but this should be alot of FUN!!! CONGRATULATIONS to Nikki, Annie, Iosia, Kahakai, and Maglio for your accomplishments!

  22. Maverick November 28, 2016 12:52 pm

I think it is awesome for Annie to have gotten first team honors. Given she was injured the latter half of last year and the beginning of this year, it is a testament to her hard work and athletic ability that she made the first team–she hit .340 and got .98 blks/set in conference, both in the top 6 of the conference.

  23. Liberally Yours November 28, 2016 1:09 pm

Congrats to the Wahine! Taylor continues to impress me with her poise and leadership. Hopefully we can give her and Mitchem a great send off with a Final Four appearance!

Have we confirmed tv/streaming? Will ESPNU provide tv coverage? I live on the East Coast and am hosting a watch party with all of my local friends.

  24. tongo November 28, 2016 1:25 pm

Yeah, assuming we get pass USC, Lindsey Berg may be able to give us insight into the mind of her former USA olympic team coach – Hugh McCutcheon.

  25. Andy November 28, 2016 2:58 pm

Well to put another positive spin on things, I’m sure Nikki and Annie were bummed about not being able to play No. 4 Wisconsin earlier this year. If the Wahine get past USC, they’ll be able to one-up that by playing No. 1 Minnesota at their house in a revenge match. The challenges don’t get any bigger than that.

  26. hollycow November 28, 2016 5:12 pm

After all the discussions on Hawaii’s placement, how’s this fact. Penn St with an RPI of 26 got the 16th and last seed. Their first opponent has the highest RPI of 196 of all of the 16 seeds. What is the committee thinking? Don’t mention geographical location when they send UH and USC to minne.

  27. hollycow November 28, 2016 5:14 pm

    …..of the 16 seeds opponents.

  28. rage777 November 28, 2016 6:21 pm

As a Minnesota fan on VT said, I think it’s Minnesota that got screwed. You beat the number 1 and 3 teams, and you are rewarded with a match against USC or UH for your second round opponent.
Hopefully enough people besides Hawaii fans will complain to get the “committee” to change their ways, if not the US Women’s National team coach, then who else will change it. The way you get more action is by beating the number 2 seed on their home floor, then they will complain even more about having to face Hawaii in the second round.

  29. Cindy Luis November 28, 2016 6:25 pm

Of the top 16 teams in Monday’s RPI, only Western Kentucky (14 and San Diego (16) are unseeded and on the road this week. The committee also jumped over Creighton (17) to give Kansas State (18) a seed, and bypassed Kentucky (19), TCU (20), Wichita State (21), Florida State (22), Hawaii (23), Oregon (24) and Texas A&M (25) in giving Penn State a seed.
Hawaii also is the only team in the Top 12 of the coaches poll not to be seeded. The poll is not part of the selection committee’s criteria.

the problem with the committee is you have people on it that are padding their resume and don’t have the best interests of the sport.

    water under the bridge

  31. rage777 November 28, 2016 7:34 pm

Forgot to say that doesn’t mean we should be looking past USC. Two words, Michigan State.

  32. HADAFAKAYA November 28, 2016 7:44 pm

all together now! opportunity? the road to the final 4 !!!!

  33. Maverick November 28, 2016 8:02 pm

    29. You may have a point in your last comment. All committee members are athletics administrators of some sort, not true volleyball people (ex-coaches/players, AVCA types, volleyball specialists, etc.). You may have seen this article: http://volleyballmag.com/ncaapeterson/

Makes new committee members sound so naive. And I don’t find the interviewee to be particularly convincing when she tries to explain how much she loves volleyball.

IMO, fixing the process includes reconstituting the committee with volleyball folks, replacing RPI with a better power rating measure (or use multiple rating systems and polls), and have greater transparency regarding exactly how the brackets are put together (why Penn State gets to host, why send two AVCA top 32 teams to to the second seed’s subregional, etc, etc.). Unfortunately, there is too little outrage by the current volleyball power teams (or all teams) to make any significant changes right now.

  34. darkfire35 November 28, 2016 8:06 pm

As had been said before, if we’re going to get to the final four, we have to beat the best. It’s better now than after they’ve played 3 matches and are worn out. Besides, I’m not sure how many teams in the last month or so have taken stock to the fact that Hawaii has late developing weapons; its jump serves, Annie on the outside, more combo plays, 2 pipe players, better passing, better blocking, and one myna bird in one papaya tree! GO BOWS!

  35. UHBacker November 28, 2016 8:10 pm

Winning is the only thing that silence critics

  36. T103 November 28, 2016 8:41 pm

Cindy, or anyone in the know, just asking cuz I don’t know the answer to this, wen u say the committee is filled with people padding their resume, what do u mean by that? I’m assuming its filled with people who can later say they were on the committee? And possibly they just kinda don’t really care about making it fair or whatever, they just put whoever where-ever in the tournament?

  37. hollycow November 28, 2016 8:53 pm

32, darkfire, Lol, haha, and Merry Xmas to you too!

Yes, get to the Banyan/Kiawe Tree root of the problem, revamp/change the entire selection committee members.

  38. blunite November 28, 2016 11:08 pm

    RE: Seeding and Tournament

    1. If it feels like a set up it probably is, expect the worse to come. (It may be human nature to serve one’s own self interests, but the temptation to cheat–if given half a chance–is always there.)

    2. Anything out of the ordinary should be scrutinized, reported, and changed as necessary. (Including room & board, food vouchers, practice time, even travel)

(Perhaps some slights die hard, coach was at one time a voting member but left after a disagreement.)

  39. Ashley November 29, 2016 2:34 am

Congrats to all, Congrats to the team for a Job well done during conference play.

Now going back to where Hawaii is being shipped to for the Tournament, i find it ridiculous but not surprising. year after year this happens, and i am not gonna lie, i am getting tired of it all. last season we defeat the reigning national champions, & make it to the elite 8. you would think this team would get some sort of respect for that, but they don’t….again. i personally don’t know what Hawaii is gonna have to do to get some respect from the NCAA committee.

i hope All the disrespect lights a fire in this team to push and make people believe. i know people will say things like: Stop complaining, or at least they made it to tournament. Seriously I am happy they made it to the tournament, but the disrespect being given to the team is what I don’t appreciate.

TBH i am at the point where i say screw the NCAA tournament all together, Hawaii will never be given a fair shot and that sucks. but this team don’t need a National Championship to prove the are the best. All of Hawaii knows it & we are proud.

So Good Luck to the team, safe travels to Minneapolis.

    MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE!

  40. tongo November 29, 2016 8:34 am

Watching all the discussion on selection, I am finally over it. The selection, like other things in life, is flawed. Many prominent coaches have challenged it over the years but it clearly remains inconsistent and often defying the obvious.

So for me, let’s return to focusing on the only thing that really counts if we want the wahines to continue playing – winning the next match. Watched USC take UCLA to 5 sets and it is pretty clear that Trojans will give us all that we can handle.

  41. Big G November 29, 2016 9:22 am

I may have missed it. How many players can the team travel with and what players are staying home?

  42. Alumni November 29, 2016 9:57 am

Height of best hitters from both SC and Minnesota are 2 to 3 inches shorter than Mitchem, Nikki, Maglio, Burns/Castillo. On an average performance night, the Wahines should beat both Trojans and Gophers. Go Bows!

  43. Cindy Luis November 29, 2016 10:55 am

    36. a quote from Haley and belief held by many, the people want to have being on a selection committee in order to add to their resume, using it for a ‘better’ job, more prestigious committee.

  44. Cindy Luis November 29, 2016 10:56 am

heading off to Minneapolis. will check by in from LAX.
until then, blog is taking a break.
