talked a little about newcomers and while he couldn’t mention Tuileta by name, hinted about him. Have mentioned earlier that Tuileta is at KCC and expected to be at UHM in spring.

Anybody hear what Wade said about newcomers this morning on Bobby Curran?

  8. jmy October 24, 2016 10:21 am

Can anyone clarify? If UH beats LBSU in Nov. & both teams end up with just one conference loss, will be first tie-breaker be the UH-LBSU series set differential, or would they automatically look at how each team played the #3 team in the standings?

  9. blunite October 24, 2016 10:55 am

    8. The first tie-breaker is the winner of the 2 match series between the tied teams.

See previous blog thread: “Hawaii down to 33 in RPI, up to 13 in poll” #34, or go to
    http://www.bigwest.org/code_book/2017/2016-17%20BWC%20Manual%20-%20Section%2021-VB8.1.16.pdf

  10. Cubicle1126 October 24, 2016 11:04 am

jmy — there are a couple other tie-breakers that the BW would go to before looking at set differential b/w hawaii and lbsu, and how they each played against the #3 team in the standings.

the BW tie-break procedures are discussed here at: http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/volleyshots/hawaii-down-to-33-in-rpi/
    check out posts 34, 44 and 56.

the first tie-break is the 2-match series b/w hawaii and lbsu. (which under your scenario, leaves them still tied 1-1).

second, hawaii and lbsu’s records against conference opponents starting at the top of the standings. (under your scenario, this too would still leave hawaii and lbsu tied).

third, they would look at the total win/loss set record in ALL conference matches, including the matches b/w hawaii and lbsu. (hawaii with the slight edge at this point with 23-5 set record, to lbsu’s 27-8. lbsu has played one more match than hawaii at this point.)

fourth, if still tied, they look at total win/loss set record against individual conference opponents, starting at the top of the standings.

fifth, if still tied, they look at point ratio.

keep in mind, that these tie-breakers are to decide who gets the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. tied teams at the top of the BW rankings would share the conference championship.

  11. jmy October 24, 2016 11:45 am

Thanks for the responses. I guess my real question is if they both end up with one loss each, would sets won/loss be part of the record, or would they just look at matches…Either way, it’s not looking good for UH. I know that there’s still time & that anything can happen, but it’s looking more & more like Beach will come here undefeated in conference play…

  12. Warriorfan October 24, 2016 12:32 pm

What did Coach Wade say about Rado Parapunov and the rest if the recruits i assume only Parapunov, tuileta and Mautuatia will play much from the newcomers.

  13. andy October 24, 2016 12:35 pm

    11. As 10 pointed out, I believe head to head set records only count as part of the collective conference set records under tie-breaker #3. So given their current respective set records, even if UH sweeps LBSU 3-0, but wins all its remaining matches 3-2 while LBSU sweeps its remaining matches, LBSU will win the third tie-breaker.

  14. noblesol October 24, 2016 12:58 pm

I’ll post a link later this evening to a worksheet that lays out all the tie-breakers and where HI and LB currently stand in a head to head. I put it together last week but wasn’t sure anyone would want to look at it. I intend to update it once a week or so, until the matter is no longer in doubt. Bottom is HI needs to take care of business every outing going forward, and they’ll have a good shot at controlling their fate.

  15. Bleachercoach October 24, 2016 1:43 pm

Talked with several of the girls at Beach Volleyball Portuguese Horseshoe Fundraiser yesterday. They said that they really needed that 1 week bye to heal up nagging injuries. They all feel re-energized to finish the last part of the BW Conference strong .

  16. cruisecontrol October 24, 2016 2:49 pm

LBSU lost three sets to UCSB & Cal Poly this past week, which gives UH a slight advantage over LB in tiebreaker #3, as Cubicle pointed out. If UH beats LB in the rematch by a 3-2 set score and wins their remaining matches, even if LB wins the rest of their conference matches by 3-0 set scores, UH could still afford to lose 3 sets in their remaining matches and get the AQ. If UH can beat LB 3-0 or 3-1, or LB loses any more sets, that would give UH even more room to work with in tiebreaker #3. Perhaps Maverick, Cubicle, or someone else could check my math (never was a strong suit for me), but I think it looks good for UH if they take care of business from here on out.

  17. Cubicle1126 October 24, 2016 3:13 pm

it should be noted too that while hawaii may have the edge right now in terms of the win/loss record for sets (hawaii is 23-5, lbsu is 27-8) … the remaining schedule favors lbsu …

for lbsu, 5 of their last 7 conference matches are against the teams in the bottom half of the big west standings …

while for hawaii, 4 of their last 7 conference matches are against teams in the top half of the standings. (the up side though is that hawaii will be playing at home for 3 of those: lbsu, cal poly and ucsb.)

  18. bowsfan October 24, 2016 3:35 pm

Can someone help me remember what TV stations, covered UH sports. OC, KFVE, KHNL. I’m trying to look for old games online. The oldest game I know is the 1987 championship game.

  19. Cubicle1126 October 24, 2016 3:49 pm

cruisecontrol — good points. yes, you’re correct that hawaii has some “insurance” if the tiebreak comes down to total sets won/lost against teams in the conference.

note though my post above. hawaii with the slightly tougher schedule from here on out, since they will be playing more teams in the top half of the conference than lbsu will.

  20. cruisecontrol October 24, 2016 4:14 pm

    19. Yep, good point that UH definitely has the tougher row to hoe. I hope the fans turn out and get the SSC rocking. Wish I could be there. 🙁

Below is a share to a MicroSoft OneDrive folder containing an Excel file I drafted that shows the current Big West WVB Auto Qualifier ranking and tie-breakers, tailored for a Hawaii vs. Long Beach head to head comparison. If you are familiar with OneDrive and Excel and how they work, you should have no problem opening and navigating it. I pieced it together quickly so it could have some errors. If you catch any please let me know. I intend to update it after each week of matches for as long as the Big West outcome is in doubt, but no guarantees on updates or accuracy. Here’s the share:

    21. Thanks for your efforts! This will be interesting to track especially if UH & LB are neck in neck toward the end of the season.

  23. Cindy Luis October 25, 2016 3:48 pm

    12. as mentioned in initial post, Wade couldn’t talk about Tuileta since he’s not enrolled at UHM. but is at KCC. is expecting him in spring.
Said he expects get things from Mautautia.
He thought Parapunov had Umlauft potential and that he was the leading point scorer in the Euro competition.

  24. Cindy Luis October 25, 2016 3:53 pm

and thanks for the help on the tiebreaker question
