Thanks for the update! Glad to hear Greeley is cleared to practice. We will need her this weekend. I have faith in Kendra to run the offense against these two tough teams.

  2. oldtimer808 October 5, 2015 7:41 pm

Yes glad to hear that Greeley can return to practice. May Taylor Higgins heal quickly and come back stronger. The beautiful thing about our team is solid depth. The middles are so strong with Magill, Maglio and Mitchem. Kahakai keeps improving and so has Kendra.

  3. darkfire October 5, 2015 7:47 pm

Prayers and healing for Tayler and I hope both Greeley will remain healthy for the rest of the season.

    Aloha Cindy,
    Any diagnosis for Tayler’s ankle?
    Mahalo!

  4. Cindy Luis October 5, 2015 7:52 pm

    3. same as what we suspected when she went down Friday. Sprained left ankle.
    Greeley sprained left knee.

  5. darkfire October 5, 2015 7:55 pm

Much Mahalos Cindy! Keep up the great work!

  6. warriorfan October 5, 2015 8:43 pm

I honestly think UH can win both matches this week, with Mckenna, Casey or Annie hitting left.

  7. H-Man October 5, 2015 9:11 pm

Good news! Nothing serious. Greeley cleared and Higgins on the mend.

One last word (at least for me) on RPI. Someone said in the previous thread, “when you schedule 2-3 years out, you just don’t know.” True, but you can make educated guesses.

You can make an educated guess that the UH will be among the top teams when the 1st AVCA Coaches Poll is released every year. And you can make an educated guess that Penn State will be up there, along with other Big Ten schools Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin. Ditto Florida, Kentucky, and (increasingly) Missouri of the SEC. Ditto Texas and Kansas of the Big 12. Ditto at least 6 of the Pac-12, including Stanford, USC, Washington, and UCLA. Ditto Louisville of the ACC. In fact, 15 of the top 16 teams in the 1st NCAA RPI of the season are from the Power-5 conferences. The question is: do you really want to play a preconference season filled with ranked teams, and if you do are you willing to hit the road to play them since many will not travel to the unfriendly quarters of the SSU.

Again, Happy Homecoming Weekend to the Bows and to the Warriors football team.

  9. mauna October 5, 2015 10:09 pm

For next year as far as the OH position, don’t forget incoming freshman Kirsten Sibley at 6’2 who is highly rated. She may surprise. And also Norene Iosia at S and Emma Smith a highly touted backcourt player. Any of them may contribute right away.

  10. mauna October 5, 2015 10:23 pm

Now that we know of Higs and Kalei’s practice status, what is Tasha’s.

  11. Cindy Luis October 5, 2015 11:05 pm

    8. that was me quoting Shoji. He also said it on the sports animals today. they expected the teams they scheduled to be better. Oregon State, American, Bakersfield all NCAA teams. No one anticipated CSUN to tank in the preseason.

Would hardly call the SSC unfriendly quarters. It’s not a hostile environment like other places are for opposing teams.

10 As mentioned on the previous thread, no update on Burns. They did not practice today. I will know more Tuesday.
She has participated in practices as much as she can, usually tossing balls from the cart. She has done everything the other players do such as running, weights, but cannot use the one hand. Hasn’t been cleared to practice in terms of the contact drills such as hitting, serving, passing, blocking.

  12. Ashley October 5, 2015 11:09 pm

i am happy by the news. hopefully Taylor will possibly be cleared by game time BUT if not, i believe Kendra will be able to handle it. you can’t really judge her performance from this past weekend, although i thought she did fairly well most of the time. now she has time to work with her hitters to prepare for the weekend matches. she needs to connect with Olivia, the riverside match the connection wasn’t there. Kendra has played well when they really needed her. i am actually excited for her to start this weekend. she seems to play well on home court as well.

Read the manual on RPI. It doesn’t matter if you play the “name” power schools on the road. Whomever you schedule you need to beat. So, scheduling tough is nice, but only if you win.

Actually, if you read the RPI factors, most important to schedule 50% of your non-conference games against opponents in the top 75. So, if you have 12 games prior to conference, then schedule two of the top 25, two in the next 25, and finding 2 – 3 schools that will be in the top 50 – 75 (likely the top 1 – 3 of the non P5 conferences) — if you can get them to travel. What helps the P5 schools is their “in conference” games are with schools that have schedules that are considered strong — because many are in the top 75. So, they gain even if they split. Hawaii has the Big West.

On another note someone asked off the blog about why UH doesn’t host the Big West tournament.
since it was a bogus email will have to answer here.

Because there is no Big West tournament.

  15. noblesol October 5, 2015 11:34 pm

Very glad to hear about Kalei being cleared. She’s been a key part of the teams identity and success, and they’ll need her healthy. Purely from a personal perspective I enjoy seeing her play.

Having had my share of ankle, knee, and ligament/tendon issues in my day, I know they can reach out and grab from time to time. Although with a day or two of cold packs, rest, and lots of tape/support, I could go again but not at a 100%. Once an ankle would go, would almost always wind up with another injury, usually the other ankle or a knee, and eventually other issues with the back and the neck. Not enough I couldn’t shake it off after a day or two, but some of the lingering effects are now for life, because they weren’t given the chance to heal correctly and completely. Not that I’d have done things much differently if I’d known of the cost at the time. Or that I’d necessarily do it differently If I could do it all again. Such is the nature of athletic drive and the fun of competing. It’s why sometimes athletes need to be protected by their coaches and trainers from over use and pushing through their pain and injuries.

Almost all athletes wind up with injury issues, but some are more predisposed. It’s why great teams need depth, and why they must develop that depth throughout the season and give the starters as much rest as possible, when ever possible. Even Lebron James in last years NBA championship couldn’t win it with a bench that wasn’t ready to carry the load when he and the rest of the teams key starters were injured and faltering.

  16. AlexM October 6, 2015 12:09 am

Good to hear that the injuries don’t seem to be too serious. But with Greeley having to sit out at UCR, it is evident that we lack depth on the outsides. When healthy, we have solid backups at DS, setting and MH positions. But, other than the starters, and with Huff’s departure, we are weak here. Maybe in time, Granato and Castillo can show that they can be effective hitters, but as of now, they really haven’t shown this. Both are decent back row defenders, but they have yet to show that they can score points. I think this is why so many are hoping to see if Mitchem can backup here as well as MH.

  17. kimo browner October 6, 2015 12:40 am

Sprains need rest. No need to rush. Wahine have a bye-week sandwiched in the OCT, six-game home stand. Higgins may heal in 2-weeks but it will take weeks to return to form and play w physical confidence. Sprained knees can be spooky given the required jumping and hard landings. Depends on subsequent swelling. If any.
We have Annie Mitchem and Casey Castillo as OHs. Great depth. Another point, Higgins had the entire season last year and this season to work with McGill and she just has recently been connecting w McGill. Kendra is very talented. She received mention for Big West POTW. Relax.
To be honest, Mitchem puts up a better block than Greely bc she has quick lateral movement and hits with more bam! Castillo may be ready to break out. Our talent runs deep.

  18. blunite October 6, 2015 2:32 am

Speedy recovery to the girls, attention to detail (coaches) may prevent such injuries.
The rankings are clueless. Washington’s talented but “coaching?” Their 5’5″ libero played front row against USC in the 5th set (no subs). Left dependent Washington hit .143 for the match, the 6’4″ opposite had 14 sets, go figure. A few other top 10 teams are the same. IF UH’s passing and digging continues to improve, anything is possible.

  19. Ashley October 6, 2015 3:04 am

was reading the article in this mornings paper, and i didn’t really say anything yesterday about where Hawaii ended up being in the RPI because honestly, i expected it. no matter what, Hawaii will always always always be treated horribly when it comes to things like this.

now maybe i will end up sounding like i am exaggerating, and maybe i could be, but the NCAA has something against Hawaii plain and simple. it’s a hard pill to swallow, but year after year it happens and now it’s more clear than ever.

honestly i hope one of these years Hawaii will able to get their shot at actually winning a National Championship, but the fact that every season UH is screwed over, i really don’t see it coming. this team has the ability to push far, but for all we know we could be sent to play in the worst place ever.

ugh, i don’t know…it’s these rankings that totally make the volleyball season so bad for me. these RPI things shouldn’t exist.

  20. warriorfan October 6, 2015 3:20 am

You can’t blame the NCAA because it uses the same formula for every team, its just UH’s schedule both preseason and conference is just not good this year.
when the schedule came out I could tell it would not be rpi friendly, Bakersfield, Idaho, eastern washington and San Diego state are never going to be reliable rpi boosters. Then the Big West conference is way down with Fullerton and Northridge completely tanking and Long Beach and UCSB not nearly as strong as everyone thought they would be.

  21. Sickman Fraud October 6, 2015 4:17 am

Cindy, now that Coach Shoji has claimed Na Wahine has no chance of hosting a regional, can you explain why the Big West/UH has the women on the road for all of November. I seem to recall it has to do with football and basketball. Sad to see UH’s most storied program and it’s fans treated in such a way.

  22. H-Man October 6, 2015 5:40 am

Cannot blame the NCAA for Hawaii’s low RPI ranking. Wahine are victim of its conference and weak pre-conference schedule. Look at it another way, the Pac 12 has a gauntlet facing them in its own conference. Same for the Big 10. But in the long run, fighting through their own conference only make them stronger and ready for post-season play. Conversely, the Wahine hasn’t been able to get past the second round because they’re simply not ready for that level of competition.

  23. H-Man October 6, 2015 5:53 am

Sickman Fraud, I didn’t realize their last home game is on Nov. 1 and that’s the last we see them this year at the SSC. And yeah, that really sucks for the fans. Wahine volleyball is the best program in UH Athletics history and the fans that support this program should have been treated a lot better by having an opportunity to say thank you and aloha at the appropriate time. Not six matches before the end of the regular season.

  24. Shar October 6, 2015 7:29 am

One element they never consider when hosting is the venue and fans. I know it is expensive for Hawaii to host but we can sell out the arena. I remember seeing some of the televised games and the venues were close to empty. Give all of the final teams an experience in the SSC. It is not only the RPI but what we can offer them.

  25. tongo October 6, 2015 7:31 am

#22 IMO, when volleyball was an AVCA governed sport, post season tournament seeding was fair, but under the NCAA and its RPI practices, it is clearly not.

With the advent of rich football/basketball TV contract for those schools who can deliver a huge audience base, schools reorganized forming new conferences where membership is based solely on a school’s ability to attract a huge football audience base for TV. These football schools (Power 5 Conference) got super rich, and now can afford the very best facilities, attract the very best coaches, and athletics in every sport- making their conference schedules the strongest year in and year out. Schools with football audience base that are lacking TV mass appeal are relegated to mid-major status with marginal TV revenue – like UH. IMO, RPI only exist to insure Power 5/7 Conferences are given every advantage to get into post season bowl football/basketball games where $ payout is huge.

Unfortunately, this TV driven practice has carried over to other non-football/basketball sports like volleyball, where there is no big revenue payout – but the NCAA needs to keep up the pretense that RPI is fair while ignoring individual talented mid-major schools like UH.

#16….Sorry I disagree with that statement on Casey Castillo on not being ready…With her very limited time at OH , she leads the team in Hitting Pct. 3 kills on 7 Attempts (.429),..which leads our team…..McKenna on the otherhand has 5 Kills on 34 Attempts. (.029)….We know they both can play backrow but it is evident by Castillo’s stature and statistics that I wouldn’t hesitate to play her more at OH….It’s just the facts!!!

  27. small papi October 6, 2015 8:23 am

    agree with #26

  28. Ron October 6, 2015 8:34 am

I can see Castillo as a Mitchem type who will be able to just take over a game someday with shear power and presents. Nikki is already there but she is really a finesse player trapped in a powerful body.

  29. jimmy the lock October 6, 2015 8:51 am

Ron, I know you meant presence but I’ll take presents anytime. 😆

  30. frings October 6, 2015 8:55 am

    #25

I believe NCAA is vulnerable to a federal antitrust lawsuit brought by the mid majors and smaller schools. A sharp legal team could fashion a convincing argument that would include charges of collusion with the Bigs.

  31. mauna October 6, 2015 9:09 am

    26. I agree with you on certain points, I have watched all SSC matches being a season ticket holder, and sorry to say Casey has more potential to terminate than McKenna. She may have less pace on her hits, but her contact point is higher. You can see that with the angle of the hits on the ball. Both are gamers but McKenna has way more playing time, especially the last match playing 2+ sets and going only 1-1-9 in attacks. I say give Casey equal time to relieve the starting OHs, she has barely any time playing the front. She may be a player that not show as much in practice but lights up when in match situations.

  32. setaone October 6, 2015 9:09 am

I love the continued fan interest in the Wahine Volleyball team.

A question for those who know…..Shoji has continually said the team won’t travel preseason because of the hit to the bottom line ($$$). My question is, if Hawaii hosted a subregional, how much of the revenue will be kept at Hawaii and how much is returned to the NCAA? Followup question, would a preseason weekend spent traveling to play RPI boosting teams do enough to guarantee hosting a subregional?

Imagine flying to LA to play USC then down to San Diego to play USD? Or up to Washington and then down to Oregon?

  33. Not an Expert October 6, 2015 9:11 am

Shoji will play the player that has the best chance to be All American through basically the entire match even if not needed. Thus increasing their numbers giving that player the best chance to be AA.

  34. kimo browner October 6, 2015 11:04 am

There are two issues circulating on this blog site: scheduling high RPI teams and playing time.
The first is handled in the preseason and the later during the season. We do not have control of the NCAA but we do control our destiny by selecting our best to play. Unless we put our most talented assets in the front row it will not matter where or who we play. Shoji must coach up. Now is the time. Move on.

  35. Cindy Luis October 6, 2015 11:19 am

    21. have explained it several times. because of football and basketball conflicts, Shoji did not want to be playing on a Wednesday or football Saturday or at 1 p.m. on a Sunday to avoid basketball.
I don’t have the first email that went out to season ticket holders but the schedule they got months ago is not what ended up being. Because Shoji had the big west retweak the schedule.

We’ve talked about the last home match being on Nov. 1 for months. Not sure why it is an issue now.

will talk about the subregional money later on new thread. but the NCAA pays for travel.

    31. think LA then San Diego an envious schedule or Washington to Oregon. pretty easy travel.
BUT you’d have to get those teams to agree to it.
