Going back on your comment in the previous post, 10 new players.
6 beach only recruits plus Emma Smith and Kirsten Sibley who indicated they plan on playing both, and who are the two remaining players?

  2. warriorfan May 7, 2016 2:15 pm

Whoops forgot about walk on Regan Hurkett from Arizona so only one remaining player. Unless it’s Norene who plans to play both?

  3. Big Island VB fan May 7, 2016 3:16 pm

UCLA sure got their revenge the next day, big time. They must have come with renewed energy and a sense of mission.

  4. warriorfan May 7, 2016 3:21 pm

Well it was close though, they won 2 of the three in 3 sets after losing the first set and UH was on it’s way to winning the two others in 3 sets, could have gone either way.

  5. Rabbit ears May 7, 2016 3:23 pm

I recall coach hall or coach shoji saying they wanted completely different players for each team. Maybe I’m remembering wrong. It could of been another coach from a different school.

  6. haleiwacrossfitter May 7, 2016 3:27 pm

I agree that next year, just concede the #1. No team will beat Hughes/Claes next year. I don’t think it is playing the system, I think it’s just being strategic. Go for blood in pairs 2-5. We are going to be very good next year. Morgan Martin, Emma Smith, Mags, Taylor, Rooks, Ari, Ka’iwi, Luyties, etc.

Not impressed at all with Schreiber. Never mixed well with Nikki or Zalopany. I expected more from her when she committed. Not convinced on Zalopany either. They both need to improve a lot to be in the top 5 pairs next year.

And yes, Anna Collier is very arrogant. I guarantee it was her that complained about the pairing, knowing that it would give Hawaii the advantage over FSU and she is scared to play Hawaii again because we would kick their a$$. I hate USC sand volleyball like I do Nebraska indoor volleyball.

  7. warriorfan May 7, 2016 3:27 pm

    5. Well what can you do when a player wants to play both like Emma Smith and Kirsten Sibley, ( plus Emily and Nikki ) and they are good at it.

  8. warriorfan May 7, 2016 3:36 pm

I didn’t like hearing Collier’s interviews during the broadcast today.
Unlike Coach Hall and Coach Brook Niles of FSU who came across very well.

    6. I wouldn’t call it conceding, as UH’s top two pairs will both be very good. but hey what’s the harming in playing what you as a coach feel is your best pair at flight 2 to avoid giving up the point to Claes/Hughes since they are just too good. The championship next year will have to go through USC.

But looks like Coach Hall will have to play his best pair at 2 ALL season long or else Anna Collier will complain again even if it’s technically allowed in the rule book.

  9. haleiwacrossfitter May 7, 2016 3:37 pm

It’s going to be interesting in the next decade or so to see how beach volleyball impacts indoor volleyball. Players now have a choice to play indoor or beach, and you got some top players choosing just beach, for example Claes/Hughes, and would be huge indoor players for their teams and possibly be enough to win a national championship for their indoor teams.

And I am sure at some point that all colleges will have separate players for each team. It’s a good thing, but it will change the landscape for sure.

Oh…and BTW….Ohio State is killing BYU right now and I could not be happier that someone is shutting up that cocky team right now. Lead 2 games to 0 and leading in set 3. Looking for the sweep!

  10. haleiwacrossfitter May 7, 2016 3:40 pm

Ohio St is about to sweep the cocky Cougars!!!!

  11. warriorfan May 7, 2016 3:43 pm

    6. Schrieber was good with Boyan last season.
I would put her with a big like Boyan, in the 5th flight.
Maybe someone like Annie Mitchem if she ends up playing on the beach next season.

  12. Don Williams May 7, 2016 3:47 pm

OSU did sweep the whiny Cougars…Set 1 OSU fought off 6 BYU set points…

  13. noblesol May 7, 2016 4:15 pm

Might be interesting to see what goes on in UCLA’s flight 5 tomorrow. They were about to lose to Rook-Homayun in the 3rd set when Buechler pulled up lame and there was a long delay in the match while she sat and rested, and then while she walked around ‘testing’ it. Play didn’t resume in time for Rooks-Homayun to put the nail in UCLA’s flight 5 and before the other UCLA flights 2-3-4 managed their sets to get a leg up on Hawaii. The delay kept them from losing and handing Hawaii some needed momentum at that point in the dual, which might have made a difference to energizing the other Hawaii pairs. Will be real interesting to see if Buechler plays tomorrow.

At flight 1, Spieler-Mags were up I think 14-11 in the third when play stopped. They had big mo in that last set and were going to switch to the good side and would very likely have won. It looked like they had figured out how to play the twins and it was fun to watch them having so much fun outplaying them.

Hawaii’s best shot at pulling out the win then was flight 3 which turned into a back and forth battle the whole match. I think they were tied around 10-10 or 11-11 in the 3rd but UCLA managed a last run. Ginger’s knee and Tucker’s shoulder looked like they might have got the best of both them at the end of long day and a long match.

At flight 2, Taylor-Schucht started strong, seemed to lose their game in the 2nd set, found it again in the 3rd and had their chances to win it. Honestly, I felt like they were the more talented pair, but UCLA’s pair looked more experienced playing together and defensively they started to read Taylor and Schucht very well, and they had a bit of an advantage in rallies.

All in all congrats to both the Bruins and the SandBows today. Both worthy competitors, and they’ll meet again next year. I look forward to it.

  14. warriorfan May 7, 2016 4:18 pm

If the 10th sand bow recruit isn’t Norene Iosia, I hope it’s a stud transfer or Foreign recruit that will be good enough to play in the top 2 flights. Just wishful thinking.

  15. warriorfan May 7, 2016 4:56 pm

13.Thanks I wasn’t aware that Buechler got injured,
I think Beuchler was a last minute replacement for another player they played at flight 5 with Consani for more size, so UCLA might go back to their previous player.

  16. rabbit ears May 7, 2016 5:38 pm

Congrats to the wahines on a great season. Was not a sand fan until this year. What a different game. Just assumed the indoor girls would be the best. Spieler , Rooks and all the sand only girls were awesome.

  17. Cindy Luis May 7, 2016 6:52 pm

Hall said 10 sand-only freshmen. They want to move away from using too many indoor players, some of it because it’s hard on the players to do both.
Hall said he likes that UH is one of the schools that allows players to do both, which sometimes tips the scale in recruiting.
And agree that today’s match could have gone either way. If the injury hadn’t occurred and UH picked up the point, it might have changed things
And yes, Spieler-Maglio had match point at No. 1 when UCLA won at No. 2.
Hall felt that the score should have been 3-2 but … it also could have gone 3-2 in Hawaii’s favor.

  18. warriorfan May 7, 2016 6:56 pm

Wow thanks Cindy, so three new beach only recruits we haven’t heard about, I wonder who they are . The 2016 class was already very good.
I am impressed Coach Hall has been able to land arguably the top two recruits in the nation, back to back in Morgan Martin and Presley Forbes(2017 recruit)

  19. Cindy Luis May 7, 2016 6:56 pm

Ohio State finishes off BYU 32-30, 25-23, 25-17

    That first set was epic.

  20. jmy May 7, 2016 6:58 pm

Congrats to the Buckeyes for winning the men’s championship…They controlled BYU like no MPSF team could this season…Always nice to see a non-MPSF team win it all…Also nice to see BYU lose!

  21. warriorfan May 7, 2016 7:00 pm

I like that UH is one of the few top schools along with UCLAto allow players to do both it’s fun as a fan to see players that mostly played indoor growing up like Emily Maglio improve on the beach and turn into elite beach players.

  22. warriorfan May 7, 2016 7:01 pm

    20. except it’s been 3 straight years that a MIVA team has won , and I think it’s time for an MPSF team to win it again. Hopefully Hawaii next year if Radoslav Parapunov is the next Yuval katz lol

  23. Cindy Luis May 7, 2016 7:05 pm

Hall said Mitchem doesn’t want to play sand. Said Koelsch was welcome to return. She practiced less than a week last year, deciding to concentrate on indoor

The only sand commits I have are these 7 so guess 3 are missing
    Julia Chizanskos archbishop Mitty
    Cyrene Hertzog Snohomish
    Regan Hurkett Red Rock
    Sydney Kidd La Costa Canyon
    Chloe Luyties La Jolla
    Morgan Martin Capistrano Valley
    Amy Ozee Seabury Hall

  24. Cindy Luis May 7, 2016 7:08 pm

    22. They are high on Parapunov but will there ever be another Yuval Katz?

  25. jmy May 7, 2016 7:13 pm

Katz was great, but I always thought that Costas was better…it’s all subjective, I guess…

  26. jmy May 7, 2016 7:16 pm

    22. Even though the MIVA has been winning it all recently, there’s no doubt that the WIVA/MPSF has dominated the sport…It would be nice to see a better balance in men’s volleyball…

  27. nomu May 7, 2016 7:47 pm

Congratulations to the entire team. Just wanted to add, UH should retire Spieler’s jersey. Got to watch today’s matches, and while USC and FSU has some great players, I thought Spieler was the best player out there.

One of these days we’ll be talking about her being another Misty May-Treanor.

  28. Haleiwacrossfitter May 7, 2016 9:03 pm

We SCORED big time with Katie. She was the reason her and Nikki did so well a couple years ago. She is so magical. Very special player. I wish her cousins would come to UH. Ma’a and the 2 van windens. 🙂

But Katie would deserve to have her number retired. I think she set the precedence not just for this team, but for the future of wahine sand volleyball. She brought us to another level which I hope sustains when she leaves. Such a special, special player and an even more outstanding student. Her parents must be exploding with pride for her. I know I would be.

  29. Haleiwacrossfitter May 7, 2016 9:04 pm

Oh and Cindy. What is that rule about beach going into indoor? There is some kind of weird 2 year waiting period or something, right?

  30. Rabbit ears May 7, 2016 9:26 pm

Love Spieler too. But comparing her to misty may treanor is a reach.

  31. Rabbit ears May 7, 2016 9:31 pm

Couldn’t help but notice how sunburn all the teams were. They need to take bio-Astin , works great in preventing sunburn. And no I have no investment with the company.

  32. nomu May 7, 2016 11:54 pm

Commentators on TruTV commented on Spieler’s academic excellence as well. She truly has set the standard for the future of this program.

She is definitely capable of representing the USA in the Olympics someday…wonder if she has considered this as well?

  33. haleiwacrossfitter May 8, 2016 4:58 am

Speaking of Anna Collier and the landscape of beach and indoor’s future.

3 of USC’s 4 players of their flight 1 and 2 were indoor committed to other programs (Bukovic and Claes from LBSU and Strange from Nebraska), that is until that sneaky Anna got them to change their commitments. I think someone mentioned, and this is only a rumor, but that she asked Hughes to approach Claes to change her mind since she couldn’t do it as the coach. Can’t confirm if that is true, just what some people on Vtalk were mentioning.

Can you imagine if LBSU had Bukovic and Claes on their indoor team this past year? They could have really challenged UH for that indoor title. And, it’s not like Nebraska needed Strange as they won the whole dang thing without her anyway.

Oh, and I’m rambling here, but.. just to think that Nebraska indoor returns everyone except 1 of their middles, but it’s ok….they are just going to replace her with an All American middle blocker transfer in Briana Holman. They could be better this year than next. I hate that soooooo much. I pray Foecke one day wants to spend part of her indoor career in beautiful Hawaii and transfers!! 🙂

  34. tongo May 8, 2016 3:03 pm

#8 Totally agree with your comment on the USC coach interview. There was a time when USC was the conservative, admired and respected, and by the rules institution- but not anymore. While they produced some of the greatest ever VB players like Debbie Green and Debbie Landreth Brown, today’s USC has chosen the low road – how very sad.

  35. Cindy Luis May 8, 2016 4:02 pm

    33. I think it best to not deal with rumors or use disparaging terms to describe people. Players change their minds all the time. And they transfer all the time.

anyway, congrats to Long-Tucker on making the all tournament team
