UCI-Beach match to be replayed

49ers initially won the match in 5. Could play into the tiebreaker should one be needed.

From the Big West:
Due to a protest upheld by the NCAA, the September 24 Long Beach State at UC Irvine women’s volleyball match has been ruled a no-contest. The NCAA has ruled that the match is to be replayed from the point of the protest, which occurred in the second set.

The protest was the result of a misapplication of a player substitution rule against UC Irvine.

The rescheduling date for the resumption of the contest has yet to be determined by the two institutions.

Wow didn’t even know there was such a thing as “do-overs”. In anywise, I really wanna get tickets for the nov 4th match against LBSU. On a side note, Olivia Magill & Davis Holt came into my workplace yesterday. It SEEMS they are dating, but I don’t wanna spread rumors. Olivia mentioned she was still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her communications degree and wants/plans to move back to washington (I think) in a couple years. Davis is working with some nature conservancy. It was good to see them and chat a little bit, ahh life after collegiate athletic career. Best of luck to both of them.

Updated the tie-breaker spreadsheet based on the UCI-LB Sept. 24 ‘no-contest’ ruling. Here’s the link: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AgoVY4MJP0wagnGTEuORoQZT37gT

Since it’s a ‘no-match’ it also means there is no recording of any of the sets played in that match in the current team and head to head stats. However in the re-match, Irvine will start with a 1-0 set lead and I think they’ll have a 2-point lead in the 2nd set (~20-18?) .

In the Auto Qualifier (AQ) tie-breakers (TB) between HI and LB, here’s the current breakdown:

AQ#1, Overall Conf. Match Record: LB leads Hawaii. (8-0 vs. 7-1).

TB#2, Conf. Match Record against common opponents: Inconclusive. Neither LB or HI have lost against common opponents. However LB hasn’t recorded wins yet against Fullerton and Irvine, but has two wins each vs. UCSB and Cal Poly vs. Hawaii’s one each. It’s arguable who has the advantage going forward on this Tie-Breaker. I’m undecided. Hawaii plays UCSB and Poly at home but these two teams are playing well, and are better than when HI saw them last. However Irvine has also been improving and essentially LB will have to beat them three times this season to avoid one loss that could put them in a Conf. Match Record tie with Hawaii, and struggling to keep pace with HI in the Tie-Breakers.

TB#3, Best Conf. Set Wins%: HI leads LB. (0.821 vs. 0.800). TB#3 will likely settle things if it ever gets this far. But if needed, we go to TB#4.

TB#4, Best Conf. Set Wins% against common opponents from the top: LB leads HI. Cal Poly is currently the first common opponent, against which LB has a 0.857% set win record, vs. Hawaii’s 0.750% set win record. If Cal Poly is still their next common opponent at end of season, then Hawaii needs a 3-0 win over Poly to match LB’s set record vs. Poly, and to then proceed down the Conf. rankings to their next common opponent to see if they can break the tie.

TB#5, Best Conf. Points Per Set: HI leads LB. (18.1 to 17.3). Not likely that there will ever be a need for TB#5. But if there is a need, HI currently holds the advantage.

Interesting outcome…Does this mean that everything (players on the court, rotation, etc.) has to be recreated?

    1. not a do-ver. the protest by UCI was upheld

    4. The NCAA has ruled that the match is to be replayed from the point of the protest, which occurred in the second set.
The stats will be used from that point on with the same players in the same position as with UCI up 20-18
At that point The Beach called timeout.
During the timeout they ruled that UCI supposedly made an illegal substitution. The score was then changed to 19-19, It was tied up until 22-22 before 49ers went on a 3-0 run, tying the match at 1-1
    Final score was 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 18-25, 15-13.
