No. 17 Hawaii 3, UC Davis 0

Expect a lineup change tonight and we’ll see how long it lasts.
As mentioned Castillo likely out with a leg problem.

Davis’ staff now has Dan Conners’ wife. She played at UCLA as well, Becky Green. She has a one-match waiver to coach since the Aggies’ other assistant’s wife just had a baby.

You will see Mitchem starting on the left with Granato and Burns in the middle tonight. We’ll see how long it lasts.

  2. Big Island VB Fan October 16, 2016 5:04 pm

I can’t get even audio. Please let me know how to get livestream audio. It’s bad enough I am locked out of video. Now audio as well? This is too much!

  3. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:10 pm

For the moment Mitchem is playing 6 rotations and is serving

  4. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:11 pm

    2. gave you the link at
    nbcsportsradiohawaii.com

  5. Big Island VB Fan October 16, 2016 5:12 pm

Big West TV furnished the wrong address. It isn’t broadcast by ESPN but NBC radio. I had to refer to the UH website.

  6. Big Island VB Fan October 16, 2016 5:14 pm

    4. It wasn’t clear that it was the audio as it was two lines below the radio and it didn’t mention audio. I thought it was another video which I couldn’t watch. The line needed just one word before it: audio.

  7. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:15 pm

Greeley ended up coming in for Mitchem for a couple of rotations

  8. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:16 pm

    5. you should always check with hawaiiathleticds.com go to the schedule link and they have all the links to tv, radio, live stats.

Taylor with the back row attack UH up 15-10 at the TTO

  9. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:17 pm

    UH 9-0-15. Davis 7-2-21.

  10. warriorwahine October 16, 2016 5:18 pm

23 on previous thread. its not a reply to myself, its an add on. i figured wood needed to be knocked.

  11. Connor October 16, 2016 5:19 pm

Granato: 8 swings. 1 kill. 1 out It’s going to be a long night.

  12. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:22 pm

hawaii challenging Taylor’s hit being out. linesman said in, up ref said out.

  13. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:25 pm

weird. they called it inconclusive. should have been a replay. Granato with a kill. it’s 18-15.

  14. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:26 pm

    UH up 20-15. TO UCD

  15. Don Williams October 16, 2016 5:26 pm

Yes, it should have been replay. The replay showed that the ad on the far side impeded the R2 from overruling.

  16. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:27 pm

    11. so silence since Granato is 2-0-2 since then?

  17. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:27 pm

    15. thank you

  18. T103 October 16, 2016 5:30 pm

Anyone else thinking that middle is throwing the ball? My viewing in the tv isn’t HD but possibly looks like a throw to me.

  19. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:31 pm

Taylor with the stuff. it’s 23-16. TO UCD.
Don, maybe not. If it inconclusive to overturn then the original call stays. I think the issue was that there were conflicting calls on the play. IMO, then there is a replay.

  20. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:31 pm

    18. agree that was a throw and Shoji yelled about it.

  21. Maverick October 16, 2016 5:32 pm

    16. She should be hitting for a higher percentage than .200, UC Davis is not a tall team, and Granato has had plenty of good sets. That makes Connor’s point all the more painful.

  22. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:32 pm

Taylor with the kill, ends it 25-16.

  23. Don Williams October 16, 2016 5:34 pm

18.YES! she is throwing the ball…so obvious, but no one is calling it. Dave has protested a few times, but these refs are deaf and blind.

  24. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:34 pm

    21. sorry his point was 1-1-8. not every ball is going to go down. She adjusted after the error and 2-0-2 on the next swings.

  25. Maverick October 16, 2016 5:36 pm

Big problem, Mitchem has only been set 3 times, Maglio/Burns four times. If that trend continues, then why put Mitchem out on the left? She needs more sets.

  26. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:37 pm

    UH up 4-0. TO UCD

  27. z October 16, 2016 5:38 pm

    Something wrong with Nikki?

  28. Maverick October 16, 2016 5:38 pm

    24. We will see how she does the rest of the way. I am hoping well, because she needs a good match.

  29. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:39 pm

    25. the problem is UCD is siding out when Mitchem is on the left. and Hawaii is holding service runs when Granato is on the left,

  30. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:40 pm

    27. no why?

  31. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:42 pm

    25. plus Maglio is in the middle when Mitchem is on the left.

  32. Maverick October 16, 2016 5:42 pm

    30. TV showed Nikki getting her arm checked out. Looked like an injury to her arm after a block.

  33. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:42 pm

Interestingly Anderson is serving for Taylor

  34. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:43 pm

    32. thank you. It’s going to get jarred every time that happens. Something she has to live with.
    UH with 3 blocks and it’s 10-3.

  35. Maverick October 16, 2016 5:45 pm

Cindy, who is the backup opposite tonight, Koelsch?

  36. T103 October 16, 2016 5:46 pm

    32. I saw that too when UC D called timeout at 4. Panned to Nikki walking off the court, she had that same ‘ouch’ face she had that one crazy match she hyper-emended her elbow. I thought I was imagining that. Ryan Kalei just said she was looked at by doctors and she got her elbow re-taped and ready to come back in the match.

  37. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 5:47 pm

This is the lineup that will get hawaii far IMO

  38. z October 16, 2016 5:48 pm

They retaped her elbow according to Leahey. I was worried because she had that same look on her face after a block.

  39. z October 16, 2016 5:49 pm

Dave said earlier that backup was Ross?

  40. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 5:53 pm

Please no more lineup changes coach shoji stick with this and let them gel:)
But I do think we need more Higgins as a serving sub.

  41. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:53 pm

Higgins into set. Ross in. UH called timeout at 22-9. think they’re checking on the rotation.

  42. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 5:57 pm

Mitchem on the slide went behind Maglio. 25-11

  43. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 5:57 pm

Id love to see annie get to do the slide as a left side player like how Willoughby used too.

  44. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 6:01 pm

Well there u go love to see Annie do the slide even as a left.

  45. Maverick October 16, 2016 6:03 pm

I’m glad Granato is hitting more efficiently and Annie is seeing more sets. Can’t really conclude too much from this match, unless UH loses 2 or 3 sets, but the numbers are trending the right way. Next big test will be 11/4 against LBSU, so UH has a little more than two matches to give Annie and Natasha more work in their roles, assuming the lineup doesn’t change.

  46. Bleachercoach October 16, 2016 6:04 pm

37….more efficient blocking and passing….When Castillo comes back she should help at the LS….I also think McKenna Ross is an athlete….she could help us when we need some energy boust! I agree the lineup is the best so far

  47. Andy October 16, 2016 6:08 pm

Burns looks like she has a tougher time moving laterally to cover left than right. Strand-Ma’a mentioned at break that maybe UCD will try to attack from right more. Will be interesting to see how Burns reacts.

  48. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 6:12 pm

Natasha is improving though just a few weeks ago she was even slower to close the block.

  49. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:12 pm

Taylor with a kill. it’s 5-2. TO UCD

  50. Andy October 16, 2016 6:15 pm

Interesting to see Nikki talking to Natasha between points and occasionally giving her extra encouragement. Looks like she has really taken her under her wing.

  51. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:16 pm

Granato still serving. It’s 8-2. TO UCD

  52. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:16 pm

    50. Burns needs some work on her footwork.

  53. Andy October 16, 2016 6:21 pm

    52. Ballroom dancing in the offseason might do wonders. If she can find a 6’7″ partner.

  54. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:21 pm

little sloppy at the moment. Guinasso with the attack, into the net. it’s 11-8. TO UH
Yes, i know. that was a throw. but they’re not going to start calling it now.

  55. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:22 pm

    53. that’s not the solution.

  56. Hot October 16, 2016 6:22 pm

Guinasso had two consecutive digs of hard-driven spikes but of course stat person only credits one dig.

  57. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:28 pm

Conners challenging Burns netting . Conners is 0 for 8. now.

  58. Hot October 16, 2016 6:29 pm

Yay for Natasha Burns! five kills and six blocks, hitting .571.

  59. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 6:34 pm

Koelsch ends it from the right. 25-15.

  60. z October 16, 2016 6:39 pm

Dave said with another week of rehab we may see more of Kalei in the front row. Whether Annie plays outside really has a lot to do with what they can get out of Burns in the middle.

  61. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 6:46 pm

I think Inlike Mckenna hitting from the right more than the left.

  62. Warriorfan October 16, 2016 6:46 pm

    I like^

  63. Connor October 16, 2016 7:06 pm

Greeley was way off on her passing tonight. She had a rare bad outing. Want to get her healthy. When she is ready we could have a lineup except for setter of everyone 6 2 or taller. Mitchem and Greeley LS. Burns, maglio or castillo middles Nikki opp. This could be very competitive team if Greeley is anywhere healthy.

  64. Connor October 16, 2016 7:08 pm

Leave mitchem on the outside where she can get more opportunities. She solves the bigger problem by staying on the outside. The other middles are improving.

  65. tongo October 16, 2016 7:49 pm

#63 Hoping that Greeley’s struggle with passing tonight has more to do with her recovering shoulder regaining mobility and throwing her receiving off. Great to see Maglio having so much fun on the court. Mitchem looks good hitting from the pin and on that slide. Burns still needs footwork but she is looking good. Very nice interview with Emma Smith on OC Sport post game show.

  66. Connor October 16, 2016 8:06 pm

Tongo: I love the front line of mitchem burns and Taylor. 6’4 6’5 6’4.

  67. Ashley October 16, 2016 8:13 pm

great quick match, was worried about a letdown because there was a football game on Saturday, but they did perform really well. almost 2 weeks before their next game, a good time for them to rest and heal nagging injuries.

  68. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 8:20 pm

    60. Shoji did say that about Greeley, calling her the X factor. But I really doubt she’ll be much better in two weeks. She said she’s still at about 70 percent and bummed things haven’t gotten better.

    61. Granato hits right once every rotation. she just doesn’t get set there that often
    65. enjoyed my chat with Smith this week as well. In case you missed it, the feature on her ran in Friday’s paper.

The bye week for sure comes at a good time for them. They are off the next two days, light practice Wed-Thu-Fri.

  69. Cindy Luis October 16, 2016 8:23 pm

BTW, Shoji spoke with Rubio after Arizona beat Stanford. Rubio said he thought that Cal would be a trap game and that they had to stay focused. But the ‘Cats lost in 5 to the Bears tonight.
Shoji in a good mood after Dodgers win tonight

  70. Bleachercoach October 17, 2016 6:09 am

I know this point is moot, but I wish Greenly had redshirted this year. I was anticipating her to have a great year 2016 due to the fact that she IMO was the most steady player all around in 2015. She was “Miss Dependable” in the backrow and made plays when needed at the OH position. I know Labrum tears takes a very long time to recover and if she gets close to 100% which I don’t think will happen this year, her immense benefit to this team is really 1 year wasted. But again, she might have different plans for her future.

  71. connor October 17, 2016 7:37 am

going back to my earlier comment about the size of the UH lineup if Greeley plays LS with Mitchem and Granato sits, i think that this lineup will be psychologically huge in playing the rest of the season. it will really get the opponents worried about big blocks and terminators. Dave should do it while he still has mitchem and taylor. “Shock and Awe”.

  72. Cindy Luis October 17, 2016 7:40 am

    70. that was never discussed. Everyone, including Greeley, expected she’d be further along by now.
    71. as much as Shoji would like to do it, it all depends on whether Greeley can play front row with effectiveness.
and much depends on Burns. sure she looked against Davis but it was Davis.

Hawaii down to 33 in RPI
