Mitchem cleared to practice, no TV Friday

Mitchem cleared to practice. Pins removed but finger will always be bent and pretty ugly. she took a few reps but didn’t push it.She will have a support on it should she play at some point.

Shoji said she’s not cleared to play yet

Team ready to hit the road again. They are flying to Houston and driving, about 90 minutes. Shoji said it was reminding him of the old WAC road trip.

    LET’S GO BOWS!

A little Willie Nelson traveling music for the trip to Texas.

Hope Annie is cleared to play game day in front of family and friends.

  3. T103 December 1, 2015 9:41 am

Yikes, did I forget they had to put pins in it? Didn’t realize it was that bad of an injury. ‘Gonna be bent and pretty ugly” is a bummer haha. (not laughing at her injury). At least she’s cleared to practice, hopefully she get in reps and maybe play in the tournament at some point in time. Go Bows!

  4. doug December 1, 2015 9:42 am

Mitchem should not be put in. She’s been out to long. Also, don’t want another Tony Romo. Need her for next season.

  5. mauna December 1, 2015 10:25 am

Here’s a fact on my favorite player Clare Marie. She has two errors in 264 serves. Last in the UCLA match, so none in the last 21 matches. That comes to no errors in the last 213 serves. NO BACHI PLEASE. Carry on Clare!

  6. Andrew December 1, 2015 10:38 am

I’m guessing OC16 is going to not travel all the way to Texas? Would be great if they did, but I’m sure we will have to rely on internet feeds from the host site?

  7. tongo December 1, 2015 11:03 am

#5 Wow, that is truly outstanding and quite remarkable. What a tremendous testimony to her ability to focus and deliver. So to that Punahou educated Libero/DS, whom name must not be utter in order to fend off any bad luck – great job!! Also, thanks for the heads-up on the bachi in regards to – “She, Who Must Not Be Named”.

  8. doug December 1, 2015 11:05 am

#5 agree, Clare Marie has been very reliable this season. She has distance herself from the other DS’s

  9. Musashi-san December 1, 2015 11:15 am

Good Luck Rainbow Wahine and let the “force by with you” (keeping with theme of new Star Wars movie”.

Wow, I didn’t know Annie’s finger was broken that bad. Imagine, she play the whole game with that broken finger and never seen her complain about it or even show there was a problem until after the game. That’s one tough Wahine.

    GO WAHINE!!!

  10. OrbitalRipZ December 1, 2015 11:52 am

    From the WHO CARES department:

Following list shows the conferences with the most bids in this year’s Big Dance:

    1. Big Ten = 9 (Minnesota, automatic)

    2. Pac-12 = 7 (still not sure if USC or Washington won the automatic qualifier; also mentioned that Colorado was snubbed this year but it wasn’t)

    3. Big 12 = 5; that’s 5 of 9 teams for the 2nd straight year (Texas, automatic)

    4. SEC = 4 (Texas A&M, automatic)

    4. ACC = 4 (Louisville, automatic)

    4. MVC [Missouri Valley] = 4 (Wichita State, automatic)

    4. WCC [West Coast] = 4 (BYU, automatic)

  11. OrbitalRipZ December 1, 2015 12:00 pm

I seldom agree with who wins COY.

Glad Shoji was picked, since Team Shoji was the force behind UH moving from AVCA Coaches Poll #18 (worst opening ranking of the Bows in the history of that Poll) to the current #7.

Also congrats to Mick Haley. In the Preseason Pac-12 Coaches Poll, Stanford was selelcted to finish 1st, ASU 2nd, Washington 34d, and Oregon 4th. USC was picked to finish 5th. BTW: Mike Sealy’s UCLA was chosen to do no better than 8th in the Pac-12.

  12. OrbitalRipZ December 1, 2015 12:22 pm

Going blind. Colorado Buffs was one of a handful of “bubble” teams: #66rpi and AVCA #30 (prior to Saturday’s last RPI and Monday’s last AVCA before postseason play).

Like Long Beach State, the NCAA [Selection] Committee used the RPI against Colorado and thus Colorado will not be suiting up for the Big Dance. As I originally stated, it was snubbed by the Committee in spite of its Pac-12 standing.

  13. Andrew December 1, 2015 12:31 pm

    10.

That is always interesting to know going into the tournament. The even better part is seeing how many remain from those conferences (especially the ACC and SEC) after the first and second rounds.

  14. kk808 December 1, 2015 12:41 pm

#9; I also didn’t realize Mitchem was hurt during the game; however, after learning about it I watched the rerun of the match and did notice that at the end when the two teams “congratulated” each other at the net Mitchem used her left hand instead of her right hand.

  15. Maverick December 1, 2015 12:58 pm

This Friday’s UH vs. TCU match is now posted on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app

  16. darkfire December 1, 2015 1:08 pm

    14. If you really watched the video a little closer, Annie pulled her sleeve up to the tips of her finger on her right hand and looked at it a few times and shook it. She needs to save herself for next season. Shoji won’t play her even if she was cleared. She hasn’t played and practiced enough. I hope she makes the trip tho.

  17. Andrew December 1, 2015 1:37 pm

    15.

    Awesome. Thanks

  18. greenthumb December 1, 2015 3:02 pm

At the risk of wearing out a pun, we’ve got game!! Focused, devoted players, an unusual venue, and now word of a video feed.

Glad to know that Mitchem has been cleared to practice. After her earlier gutsy efforts it was just going to be too sad if she were so close to the court near home and still in that first stage of healing/rehab.

  19. Cindy Luis December 1, 2015 3:29 pm

sorry for the delay. received a text from Dan S. at Oceanic. as mentioned above Friday is ESPN3 which is online
No sense in OCS going for one match since if TAMU advances, no reason the Aggies shouldn’t, but the match likely gets picked up by the SEC network.

Mitchem said she doesn’t expect a ton of family and friends there but her old high school and club teammate now with TCU after transferring from Pepperdine.

  20. Cindy Luis December 1, 2015 3:36 pm

RE: Mitchem. you can probably google what I wrote when it happened the subsequent severity of the injury and the updates. No one thought it was bad, happened in Set 1 when diving for a ball. She continued to play with it taped.

Pac-12 AQ: Washington based on set differential with SC head to head. UW won in 3, SC in 4.

Mitchem is making the trip. doubt if they’d use her this week unless something odd happens. But she’ll get the NCAA experience and if Hawaii advance she likely available for next week.

  21. Andrew December 1, 2015 3:36 pm

    19

Hopefully A&M (and Hawaii) advances then. Its much easier to watch the match on TV than ESPN3

  22. Cindy Luis December 1, 2015 3:45 pm

    21. no guarantee it will be SEC. might just be ESPN3
checked on the TAMU website. only see ESPN3

  23. bleachercoach December 1, 2015 4:10 pm

Wish I could travel but too many connections or driving to make our late notice. If anyone is traveling to matches @ College Station, how does your itinerary look like.
ESPN3 is better than BIG West TV but no way better than ESPN, ESPNU, FOXSPORTS, and OC16…Of course LIVE is the Best!!

  24. islandman December 1, 2015 4:11 pm

    Per uhathletics website:

Web Broadcast: All three matches of the First and Second Round at College Station will be broadcast on ESPN 3 and produced by 12th Man Productions. Casey Richardson will be handling the play-by-play and Chelsea Reber will be the color analyst.

  25. mo-jo December 1, 2015 4:29 pm

Anyone have a link to the TAMU Florida match?

  26. H-Man December 1, 2015 4:36 pm

Just finished watching the Hawaii-Florida re-telecast. Florida beat Hawaii in every category but one -service errors Florida had more kills, higher hitting percentage, more digs and more blocks than the Wahine. But they had 12 service errors. So maybe that was the difference.

  27. haleiwacrossfitter December 1, 2015 5:21 pm

Wow, I must have missed that part when it was mentioned she had pins and stuff in her finger. RE: Mitchem.

I remember that night, she really hustled and played hard. I know she has stated she wants to play all the way around and I think she felt that was a night to prove she could because she was playing really hard and diving all over the place. What a tough chick!!!

I’m sorry to hear it was that bad. Well, who knows, if she is cleared to play, even if she is not playing a full game or what not, sometimes just in for a couple plays here and there can throw a team off enough. Especially if done at critical moments of the match. So, I say if she is cleared, let her play here and there. Get her some NCAA D1 tournament experience for next year.

Good luck, Annie!! Sorry to hear how bad your injury was and thank you for playing as hard as you do! 🙂

  28. Maverick December 1, 2015 5:48 pm

    26. Just watched the 2013 win over Texas and the 2009 tourney wins over USC and Michigan. I’m ready for the TCU match.

  29. Not an Expert December 1, 2015 5:48 pm

Bring home the national title. Play loose and confident with the attitude of no one will beat us. We are going all the way and win it all. Players do not verbalize to anyone outside of the team these type of thoughts. Keep it among yourselves and have it deeply ingrained in your sub-conscience with sincere humility that this will be done. You are on a mission.

  30. Maverick December 1, 2015 5:51 pm

    25. It can be seen on replay on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app (you can also use Apple tv if you own one).

  31. mo-jo December 1, 2015 6:45 pm

    30, Mahalo!

  32. Big Island VB fan December 1, 2015 7:00 pm

My question is this: if Hawaii wins both matches, will the team stay in the mainland or come back home on Sunday? After all, Texas is so much closer to Des Moines, Iowa, than Hawaii. Why should they make two very long round trips?

  33. Cindy Luis December 1, 2015 8:10 pm

    32. they would stay on mainland.

For those who missed my video up on Warrior World from Tuesday

  34. Row13 December 1, 2015 9:00 pm

Thanks Maverick30. In addition to Apple TV, the WatchESPN app is available on other TV streaming devices such as Roku, Amazon Fire, Google Chromecast and Xbox One. You need to be a cable TV subscriber to access the content. We get it through our Roku and the picture quality is pretty decent.

  35. Kryon December 1, 2015 10:54 pm

Can Annie use a medical exemption n still have 2 yrs left to play?

    #36 and #37.

You need to view these articles I the correct light, especially positive comments about the Wahine and in particular the prediction of a sweep. These articles sometimes become Trojan Horses by their very nature undermining (or overinflating ) the confidence of the team and the fans.

Bottom line…play hard, take no prisoners.

    GO BOWS!

  39. darkfire December 2, 2015 6:53 am

    35. Interesting question Kryon. That would be cool if Annie could stay another 2 years on a medical.

PLAY SMART, PLAY HARD! GO BOWS!

UH updated its Wahine Volleyball schedule page this morning with the following direct link to Friday’s match. Posting it here for your bookmarking pleasure.

  41. mei mei December 2, 2015 8:41 am

36/37 thanks for the articles and a lil insight on their perspective… according to that sports writer… he is favoring Hawaii 3-0. hmmm hope he is right!!

    go Na Wahine!

  42. greenthumb December 2, 2015 9:00 am

35, there are plenty of medical records for UH/Mitchem to show UH to document the injury, so it would come down to some math, including the following. It looks like requirements to qualify for a redshirt (medical hardship) include the injury occurring (a) before the first competition of the second half of the season **AND** (b) the player being in not more than 3 contests or 30 percent of contests.

The NCAA rule is Bylaw 14.2.4 and it is cited on various schools’ athletic websites (google “medical hardship” and that number and you’ll get a lot of hits).

This was the closest I could get to it on the NCAA website — see page 117: http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Legislation.pdf

  43. Cindy Luis December 2, 2015 9:58 am

to answer. No she isn’t eligible for medical hardship which is only granted after a player has exhausted their eligibility (playing 4 in 5 years).

Mitchem has played in too many matches this season. Also injury occurred in second half of the season.
