Wednesday check-in: Shoji back

dave

Previous thread getting a little too long.
some comments

Castillo has been practicing at middle but also taking swings at OH. That mean’s both left and right. Which all of UH hitters do, Taylor included, since that’s how UH offense runs. Rights hit right twice, left once; lefts hit left twice, right once.

People keep putting up the individual position recaps links from UH. probably lost is the link posted for women’s volleyball where you can get all the recaps individually.

Had mentioned before that Shoji said Kahakai had national team potential.

one comment about Spieler not having the opportunity to contribute indoors. She was injured as a freshmen, wore a walking boot during fall. She chose to concentrate on beach instead of trying to do both. graduated in three years and played as a grad student her fourth.

Smith is a very good beach player and is an invited walk-on, as is Ross and Okino. Am sure Smith walk on for beach as well.

You are all welcome to contact OCSports about live streaming

someone had asked so here is my projected starting lineup
S: Higgins
Opp: Koelsch

what puts Castillo over Burns in the middle?

  2. hollycow August 24, 2016 10:20 am

Cindy, your lineup may very well be next year’s starting lineup with the only change at setter with Iosia. We get an early 2017 preview this weekend.

  3. Kazu August 24, 2016 12:11 pm

1 Castillo have more practice time over Burns.
Would Shoji risk playing Greeley when she is not 100%. Maybe start the freshman Sibley like he did with Taylor against Texas and if that don’t work bring Greeley in.

  4. hollycow August 24, 2016 12:26 pm

Kazu, or Casey on the left and Sunshine at M2. Casey is ahead of Kirst on the left. Sunshine showed me a lot at the scrimmage, just needs work on the footwork as per Jeff, but she’s a more than adequate blocker and has a quick armswing.

  5. Cindy Luis August 24, 2016 1:19 pm

    1. Castillo looks better than Burns at the moment. Burns’ footwork is a liability.
    3. Greeley may end up only in the back row for her passing but she looked better Tuesday when hitting. If not, then they’ll go to Sibley.
Don’t see Castillo starting on the left since she’s taken the majority of practice reps in the middle.

Good call Cindy!! I also like #3 and #4
    scenario….Fantastic!

  7. hollycow August 24, 2016 1:28 pm

Cindy, if you’re going to this afternoon’s practice, would appreciate an update of Shoji’s assessment of his opinion of who’s ahead in each position and most probably who will get the start. I know it’s only his first look at, especially the new players, but he should have a general idea who’s best in each position. TY.

  8. hollycow August 24, 2016 1:43 pm

And also only the last day of full practice tomorrow, so the first team chemistry is an all important thing to work on.

Hope Nikki’s injury isn’t like the one her sophomore year she deserves a great senior year and to be able to play the whole season, if it is I’d consider redshirting her eventhough it would throw off scholarship situation for incoming recruits.

Excited to see Kendra show her hitting chops!

  10. Cindy Luis August 24, 2016 3:05 pm

    7. at practice. Asked and answered. Spoke to Shoji. he said he won’t make a determination until after tomorrow’s practice.

  11. Cindy Luis August 24, 2016 3:11 pm

See photo of shoji start of thread. Pestolesi has decided he is in charge of the music during stretches. In honor of Shoji’s return, started off with Los Lonely Boys’ How Far is Heaven. Now it’s “Godzilla.” Next Billie Jean.

to add what Shoji said. He got back around 8 last night, didn’t know Taylor would be out for the weekend until then. She had texted him after it happened that she thought it would be OK.
He said the coaches have kept him up on how practices have gone, who they think is ahead. Will have a story tomorrow with more details. .

Spoke with UH Athletics Department- they directed me to OC Sports for questions about the online stream and gave me this contact information. I’ve sent a message but no response yet.
“If you would like to contact OCSports regarding the streaming situation, please contact Dan Schmidt at 808-625-8321 or you can email him at dan.schmidt1@charter.com

  13. Cindy Luis August 24, 2016 5:25 pm

    12. thanks. you spoke with Kara Nishimura the SID volleyball. It won’t change for this weekend. There were supposed to try the challenge system replay too but that’s not happening this week.

  14. tongo August 24, 2016 5:41 pm

#12 Much thanks for taking the lead. I hope everyone sends a message to OC Sports asking them to reinstate the streaming of the matches. It is something that they had been doing since they won the contract. When the wahines are on the road, there is such a large group of wahine fans in the mainland that show up faithfully to cheer the team on just as if they were at the Stanley. The streaming is the lifeblood that keeps them connected to the team. We need to get OC Sport to stream the matches.

  15. H-Man August 24, 2016 6:53 pm

Excited for the start of the Wahine VB season. It’s such a downer that both Annie Mitchem and Nikki Taylor are out with injuries for a few weeks, but it will a good chance to see how the team responds. Go Wahine !!!

  16. kahuna August 24, 2016 7:10 pm

Yikes …..heard on a sportscast that Nicki “dislocated” her elbow. I hope the news was wrong. Dislocated elbow sounds pretty seroius to me.

Hoping for only a bruise or sprain.

  17. islandman August 24, 2016 8:00 pm

Saw Nikki on the TV sportscast practicing digging with only her right arm. Saw Annie doing some footwork drills.

What happened to the new Asst. Women’s basketball coach that was here for awhile ? Not here anymore.

  18. Ashley August 24, 2016 8:05 pm

well sad that Nikki is sideline this weekend, but will be a somewhat good preview of what it would look like when she graduates after this season. a lot of good talented players still waiting to prove themselves.

  19. haleiwacrossfitter August 24, 2016 8:10 pm

Can Castillo do a step out?

  20. blunite August 24, 2016 9:12 pm

    Cindy,

    – Can the public watch Wisconsin practice in the SSC tomorrow?

    – Even if Hawaii does not view film on Wisconsin, I hope they reviewed the Minnesota game and discussed it. Kelly Sheffield is sure to emulate (to some degree) Minnesota’s first 2 sets against Hawaii.

  21. Cindy Luis August 25, 2016 8:34 am

    17. not sure which video you saw, on TV station was there Tuesday (Gym 1), one was there Wednesday.(SSC). Mitchem has participated in a lot of drills, including hitting. only thing she can do is block.
    19. she can
    20. no. practices are closed
why would you think they wouldn’t review film? especially since Wisconsin has all starters back except the libero.
Sheffield is his own person. Said that it is a lot about his side at the moment but they do have to pay attention to what the other teams here do. But with Hawaii’s lineup in question, hard to prepare for the Wahine, other than to know they don’t have Taylor.
