Related to previous thread, post #28. McGinn just informed me that Div II matches are not included in Div I RPI so long as you beat the Div II opponent. He said there is a penalty for losing to a Div II opponent. Oddly, it would probably be better (?)/not as bad for UH’s RPI to lose to Bakersfield than to a Div II opponent. Unlikely scenario for UH, but I want to clarify one of the RPI specifics.

Looking at Arizona’s schedule, it seems their record is much more due to their level of competition. They nearly beat Texas though and have somewhat quality wins over Cal and Oregon but other than that it doesn’t seem like they had the most rigorous non conference season.

  3. LanaiBoy October 8, 2015 9:07 am

Lianna Sybeldon had a great match. However, watching it on the Pac 12 Network, the strategy of Coach Dave Rubio of assigning only one blocker to the middle throughout the match drove the color announcer crazy. She kept asking throughout the match—about a dozen times—why is Arizona not stacking its blockers against Sybeldon as she was hitting at will from the middle. It seemed to be a strange tactic since Washington top outside hitter, Courtney Schwan was injured and the others, a freshman and a sophomore, did not have much experience.

  4. po'okela October 8, 2015 9:16 am

#3 apparently you’re not too familiar with volleyball.

sometimes that’s a risk teams will take. stack your blockers on sybeldon and you leave the pins wide open and washington’s pin hitters are pretty darn good. so it’s better to have at least once block on sybeldon then a pin hitter on the opposing side with no block. their sets to the outside are at a much quicker tempo that it was hard to read exactly where the ball was going…

however, both teams looked very beatable and I’m loving the parity this year.

  5. po'okela October 8, 2015 9:18 am

this is an advantage of running a 6-2. there are always three options for the setter which makes it difficult sometimes to stack a couple of blockers against their hitters especially when they were passing pretty good against arizona.

  6. LanaiBoy October 8, 2015 9:36 am

Re #4. Notice that I was quoting the color announcer on Pac 12. Does that mean that she does not know volleyball? It was the color announcer that was bothered a LOT, not me, though I agreed with her deferring to her expertise.
A VT regular with over 14,000 posts and a Washington fanatic said this of the Washington outsides, “The UW outsides just arent elite attackers, period, and even though I love my huskies to death, it will be the reason why UW will probably only make it to the sweet 16.” You are a definitely of a minority opinion if you consider Washington’s outside to be a strength. Most go with the middles and its libero. But having different opinions is the nature of VT and Cindy’s comment section.

  7. H-Man October 8, 2015 10:12 am

Let’s see. USC is the number 1 ranked team. Washington took one set off them and lost the 4th set 31-33, nearly forcing a 5th. So we can establish that Washington is a good team. Period. The Wahine is a good team. We just don’t know just how good for the lack of top tier competition in the BWC. Teams from the Big 10 and Pac 12 will have honed their skills via their own conference competition. Will the Wahine be ready at the same level? Last few years, they weren’t, losing badly to Washington in the 2nd round; 2013 losing badly to BYU in the 2nd round; 2012 losing to Washington in the 2nd round; 2011 was their best season in recent years (31-2 W/L) losing to USC in a 5-set, highly competitive and fought match. That year the Wahine was still part of the WAC.

  8. darkfire October 8, 2015 10:15 am

    Aloha Cindy,

How was practice yesterday? Does it look like Greeley will play this weekend? Also, just out of curiosity, how many Wahine will be playing sand next year?

    Mahalo!

  9. kimo browner October 8, 2015 11:24 am

UCLA, the team that easily dispatched Hawaii on the road (3-1) is showing a little brother complex in the PAC 12 against the top 5–USC, WASH, ASU, UA and Stanford. The formula some fans use to calculate we can beat any of these five in the play-offs, on the road, is mystifying.

  10. warriorfan October 8, 2015 12:53 pm

UCLA hasn’t played at the same level since they have left the island anyone can see that. Their OH2 had a career game against Hawaii , but since then she has not been good at all.
and Easily dispatched?? Please it could have easily have gone 5 despite all hawaii hitters struggling.

  11. kimo browner October 8, 2015 1:12 pm

You mean, UCLA has played better teams since they left Hawaii. Wahine hitters struggled against UCLA? LOL. That’s what all teams say when they lose.

  12. jimmy the lock October 8, 2015 2:12 pm

It’s just opinions. However anyone wants to interpret the water level in a glass is ok with me. Good for the entertainment value of the blog. 😉

    Great article on Norene.
http://www.easyreadernews.com/110847/norene-iosia-chaffins-redondo-volleyball/I could see her having a similar career to Robyn, player then a coach.

    UOP up 2-0 against BYU…

  16. mo-jo October 8, 2015 6:04 pm

Took in the arizona washington match. arizona is the real deal and fought tooth and nail with USC and the huskies. Glad we’re not seeing them this year. Snuka is an on point setter. Her only problem is what we share with higgins. Height on the left side. IMHO Na Wahine would look like a middle of the pack Pac 12 team. How did we miss out not getting OH Kalie Mau from Kaiser? Top tier teams seem to have at least 2-3 terminators on the OH. We have one. Our blocking and middles are superb … but so much for our depth as we argue who should step in for Greeley.
Oh well…. we can all pray that Nikki stays healthy.

  17. bleachercoach October 8, 2015 6:07 pm

Watching Pacific having their way against BYU right now up 2 sets to none…..Anything can happen in Best of 5…If we get to postseason I would love to play BYU and do what they did to us 2 years ago.

  18. z October 8, 2015 6:30 pm

    Nice to see Higgins practicing.

  19. warriorfan October 8, 2015 6:45 pm

BYU looks way down compared to the past two seasons.

  20. jmy October 8, 2015 6:53 pm

    19. Coming back against UOP though…

  21. jmy October 8, 2015 7:15 pm

Well, UOP just gave that one away…complete loss of focus…

  22. rapid October 8, 2015 7:36 pm

hey cindy you got any thoughts you would ‘come to think of it’ agree or disagree or agree to disagree when i say:

title ix is a double-edged sword.

to poster 26 on previous thread regarding

yes. and add insult to injury to any volleytalker, poster of this blog, volleyball ‘fan’ or of volleyball, who thinks xyz player should play at positions xyz other than shojis status quo especially ripping on shar manuolevao wanting to replace her. 😀

  24. Cindy Luis October 8, 2015 8:13 pm

    catching up with some comments
Disagree that UCLA easily dispatched Hawaii.
Thought I mentioned how practice was Wednesday. Greeley was allowed to jump
Higgins out of a boot, did some light stuff
    18. assuming you saw Higgins on TV. That was filmed Wednesday. they only filmed early warmup. She wasn’t complete involved.

As for Thursday, CSUN was late for their practice time because of traffic so instead of 1-3 they went 204. UH accommodated them by moving their practice back an hour and went 4-6:30.
Greeley will play. Higgins still not in a boot and light stuff. questionable for Friday but more of a precaution. Don’t think they’ll try to use her unless they feel they have to against CSUN.

    22. HEY RAPID, i really dislike being addressed with a hey.

Title IX is an educational amendment (1972) to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The intent was to stop discrimination at institutions of learning that received federal funding. If you care to, I did a weeklong series about Title IX in Hawaii back in 2002 fro the Star-Bulletin, including the last interview with Patsy Mink before she passed. the amendment was renamed the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act the year she passed.

Part of the reason that Mink went into law was to end the discrimination she encountered when trying to get into med school. Women were flat out told they wouldn’t be admitted because they were women and were taking a spot away from a man who would be supporting a family.

Mink herself was surprised when it was applied to athletics. It was also why the service academies had to start admitting women.

So, what do I think? In theory good. In practice, it has become an excuse to blame women’s sports for men’s programs being dropped. The blame should be on the athletic departments who go the easier route by dropping men’s sports instead of finding a way to fund them.

My thought: discrimination is wrong and there’s been a lot of discrimination against men’s sports now. one problem is the NCAA mandated gender equity numbers, especially at schools which sponsor football. Since there is not women’s sport that has the same scholarship number as football (85) it means it affects other men’s sports, such as volleyball. 4.5 scholarships compared to 12 for women, baseball with 11 compare to softball’s 22., etc.

  26. Ashley October 9, 2015 12:17 am

with all due respect Cindy, i have nothing but respect for you and what you do on a daily basis here. although sometimes your reactions to harmless things we say starts coming off as very mean and disrespectful to us as posters. at least for me it does, i can’t speak for everyone else. i myself started a post saying Hey, and the response i got from you made me feel like i was some sort of idiot. i get it now that you highly dislike being greeted with a hey, but it’s so harmless and its the way some of us speak. i don’t mean to start any kind of drama, i just wanted you to know that i personally felt hurt for saying something that i had no clue you didn’t like. please don’t take this the wrong way, but it’s something i just wanted you to know.

  27. haleiwacrossfitter October 9, 2015 1:32 am

drama…get over it. Cindy has a bite to her and gets moody and does respond a little sarcastic at times, but she has to deal with a lot of headache posters that attack her, so I get it and let it be. If I was her, I’d be ripping into a lot of the posters on here a lot worse than she is. There is one poster lately that seems to be pushing her buttons, so I really don’t blame her for her feistiness at times.

  28. Hollywood October 9, 2015 2:02 am

    27. Are you referring to rapid aka wildcard, who claims to never go on Volleytalk but has more than once mentioned it here? I won’t be surprised if he is brosolee on Volleytalk, who has been badmouthing Cindy.

Two big matches today: Penn St. at Illinois, Arizona St. at UW…potential for more movement…

  32. Cindy Luis October 9, 2015 9:46 am

    26. sorry ashley if you were offended but I’m not sure what you are referring to other than the ‘hey.’
My response to someone starting off with a Hey … to me it feels like someone is shouting at me. and I have said it in the past that I don’t care it, and asked, with a please, not to.

    Other pet peeves:
people using multiple handles to have discussions/arguments with themselves.
People using bogus emails so no explanation can be given off the blog for something instead of it bogging down the blog with inane things.

As for my response to rapid, it was the third day in a row that it was asked and my first two comments apparently didn’t suffice.

hmm, a bite. we’ll see if that comes out when I have to deal with HECO who now wants to charge me for three months of usage prior to them installing the new meter and they want to be paid at the new rate even though the bills for the past three months were paid already.

Agree there are times that I get grumpy and I have apologized for it. As many of you know, our blogs are considered outside of the normal work day and all of our bloggers don’t get compensated for it.
sometimes it’s already been a very long day before I have time to get to the blog.

  33. greenthumb October 9, 2015 10:26 am

Hi. I’ve been trying to read up on strategy and would appreciate anyone’s pointers on sources of clear explanations of 6-2, etc. I did a little reading on Wikipedia, but am hoping there is a resource(s) that is more detailed — and yet not confusing — available online. Thanks.

  34. Ron October 9, 2015 11:16 am

I hate HECO and Maui Electric (owned by HECO). I think they make mistakes on purpose hoping you won’t notice. No company could survive being this inept without a hidden agenda. (greed)

  35. Russ October 9, 2015 11:43 am

Hello Cindy. Is there any way you can ban people who use multiple handles to have discussions/arguments with themselves? These people are wasting our time and deceiving us with their posts. Extremely unfair to the people who post legitimately.

  36. warriorfan October 9, 2015 12:40 pm

Looks like the 2016 warrior roster is out, lots of freshmen!

  37. warriorfan October 9, 2015 12:46 pm

Great article on Emily today, I am very surprised she could possibly play on flight 2 for the beach team this season. Hope Casey, Annie and Kalei play beach as well. It will help their games tremendously.

  38. Cindy Luis October 9, 2015 1:47 pm

34-35. Ron, hard to overlook when I got eight pages detailing my old rate (paid) and new back-dated rate. But they did offer me a payment plan. they say the Kwh have more than tripled in the three months. We are so rarely home so unless the dog is throwing wild parties I don’t know what to say.

I don’ have the power to ban or block. all i can do is alert our web guys about the issue.

    37. thank you. Don’t be surprised if TV tonight uses some country music. courtesy of Chris McLachlin. Told him yesterday about Greeley and Maglio’s love of country. he pulled up some tunes on his computer before practice and had Maglio doing a little line dance.

it’s hard to play two sports. Don’t think Castillo’s previous injury would be a good fit for beach but the indoor team does train on the sand during spring. Mitchem said earlier she wanted to concentrate on indoor. Don’t see Greeley on the beach team either. But you never know.

Thing is, UH has gradually moved towards two separate teams so as not to stress indoor players. Someone asked earlier who will be playing beach from indoor. Don’t know if Hall will take the same approach as Wong did by asking at indoor practice who wanted to also play beach. They’ve already begun workouts with the dedicated beach players.

  39. nomu October 9, 2015 1:58 pm

Kahakai improving and close to taking it to the next level. Anderson playing really well too. What’s not to like?

  40. nomu October 9, 2015 2:00 pm

People who love country music are special people.

  41. Cindy Luis October 9, 2015 2:02 pm

    27. et al. I appreciate all the support given, here and other sites. This blog is the second most popular at the paper, behind Tsai.

So before we move on to Friday thread,
regarding 26. … if you want mean, perhaps take a look at other volleyball- and UH -related blogs and twitter accounts where on any given day one can be called a liar, have personal and professional reputations attacked, be physically threatened and go so far, at least in one instance, tell all who would read not to take a class because the instructor was terrible. this before the class started. that took a lot of effort to get the detailed information on the latter.
    It is wearing.

    But enough about me …
    new thread up
