Thursday checkin: Wahine, USAV men’s roster

CM55GuXUAAITMI2

Even though she’s injured, Natasha Burns tried to be involved with practice as much as she could. Above passing balls to Megan Huff as part of passing practice happening on the other side of the net.

Wahine only had one practice today. and one tomorrow afternoon on Admissions Day.
Pretty spirited practice since they had fresh legs.
Nothing too exciting today after all the stuff yesterday.
Pretty routine drills after the normal 20 minutes of working with the strength coaches.

And for all the curious minds, yes, after five practices Mitchem is still the third middle.

Sort of touched on it last week about the preliminary USA Men’s roster for next month’s FIVB World Cup. USAV made it official today. Appreciate the link given on the previous thread.

On the roster with Hawaii ties are setters Micah Christenson and Kawika Shoji; libero Erik Shoji; and middle Taylor Averill.

Cindy, did Mitchem get her share of reps from the Outside or Opp positions?

  2. Brandon August 20, 2015 6:34 pm

I really hope Mitchem starts. She’s way to talented to ride the bench.

  3. wildcard August 20, 2015 7:15 pm

hey cindy you said on previous thread something about that is your opinion that shoji likes to keep a certain rhythm on the court but however which a 6-2 ‘can disrupt’. so you saying its your opinion that he like have this as an exposed weakness?

also the scrimmage this saturday is open to booster and family only or to public like last year?

  4. Cindy Luis August 20, 2015 7:26 pm

    1. only middle but during warmups players rotate so that everyone hits for different positions including the setters and DSs.

    3. didn’t say that. And do not see it as an ‘exposed weakness.’
Very few schools run a true 6-2 so don’t see the issue that Hawaii doesn’t either.

last year was something that coincided with football scrimmage and something Ben Jay wanted to do.
It’s back to booster club and family as it has been for some 10 years.

I like Natasha’s commitment by continuing to participate in practice and remaining positive.

It’s too funny hearing fans expecting Mitchem to start, or at least thinking that she should start. She hasn’t even played D1 yet!

To those who are completely mind-bottled that she isn’t expected to start right now, I hate to say it but there is a possibility… maybe even the slightest of slightest possibilities that both Magill and Maglio are better than her right now. I’m just taking a little guess. I could be wrong thogh, and probably am, after all according to some, she is already apparently UH’s next All American.

  7. warriorfan August 20, 2015 8:12 pm

Oh gee maybe because Mitchem, has the jump and hitting power to make an impact, do you blame UH fans? And what’s funny about wanting someone with her potential on the court?
I just hope Shoji has her ready by the time florida comes along, UH will need to beat them if they want a chance to host in the post season.

  8. Brandon August 20, 2015 8:37 pm

Lina, she was prep top 20 recruit (I believe 13) was recruited by programs like Nebraska, San Diego etc, and was just an all around great athlete. She hits an insane ball and cal play back row. I rather have her at OH with GREELEY and manu take a redshirt so she can play her senior night, but that won’t happen. Regardless, annie needs to be on the court.

  9. warriorfan August 20, 2015 8:51 pm

    8. UH can’t afford to have Olevao redshirt, they won’t have a scholarship for her next season.

I understand why he started Long over Greeley last year since Greeley was just a freshmen, but Mitchem is a 3rd year junior and only has two years to play and she needs to get experience the first week so she is up to speed with the D1 game by the time UCLA and Florida come in.

  10. mauna August 20, 2015 8:51 pm

Since Burn’s injury the comments that I’ve gotten from Shoji seems to indicate that Mitchem won’t get a look at outside since they are down to 3 middles.

Another thing that’s Funny, Maglio has played some cleanup at the end of sets, and the most when Magill cramped on the road, but she hasn’t Started at all too, in a scheduled match.

  11. Sickman Fraud August 20, 2015 8:56 pm

Maybe, just maybe it might be that Magill and Maglio are the better two, and given the talent of Mitchem that bodes well for the NaWahine. Go Bows!

  12. mauna August 20, 2015 9:19 pm

We’ll see this Saturday who shows up and stands up above the rest.

Got to see Redondo High’s and Hawaii’s possible 2016 recruit (Iosia) play yesterday. She has wonderful hands and such a beautiful effortless backset, but IMO observation she has to improve her feet and lower body quickness and agility. That of course will come with maturity and training. She is a prized recruit !!! On the other hand, I was totally impressed with one of Redondo’s OH…She terminates like a veteran college player already and wished we could get her… (don’t know her name) but I am sure she is on the radar of many top colleges.

  14. Cindy Luis August 20, 2015 11:08 pm

    8. No one is disputing Mitchem’s talent or potential. But she’s only had five practices and is still adjusting to what Hawaii runs and that includes the type of warmup drills. She is not in the same shape as the returnees in terms of stamina. The returnees really worked hard in spring and summer and fans will see that in the matches. Mitchem said after the first practice that it was the hardest she had ever had.

    9. They’re not going to redshirt Manu-Olevao.

    10. Seems that people forget the reason Maglio didn’t see much playing time was she was a raw freshman playing behind Adolpho.

  15. Warriorfan August 21, 2015 12:12 am

    13. I think Iosia is deceptively quick, she also is the type of player that steps up her game the higher the competition.

the outside hitter you are thinking of is probably Megan Rice who is headed to UCSB. She is good but only like 5′ 10.

Kudos to Natasha for staying engaged. Mitchem has game but will still need to beat someone out. Olivia and Emily has game too. Looking forward to seeing the process play itself out in the next few weeks. Still hoping to see Annie at OH.

  18. Cindy Luis August 21, 2015 7:45 am

    17. very nice young woman and very mature.

As of now, Mitchem is the third middle and is practicing as an MH. She has not taken reps on the outside during her 5 practices.
Coaches continue to evaluate and we’ll see what happens at the scrimmage Saturday and Monday/Tuesday when they usually start setting the opening lineup.
The option is there for Mitchem to go OH but a lot of things have to happen for that to occur. One factor would be if Manu-Olevao decides not to play Sundays.
